The CYM(Cyan Yellow Magenta) color wheel is for photography which is the mixing of light and used in color photography. The RBY(Red Blue Yellow) is used in painting or coloring which is the mixing of pigments. The exception to this is color printers. Computers at first use the CYM color wheel because the monitors were light sources. When they started making color printers they had to use the same color wheel CYM. To get black you can print full cyan, full yellow and full magenta, but you wind up with dark brown. For black they had to add black. So printers are CYMK.
I have been painting forever and my dad recently has been into painting and he asks me how to make colors and I have not found a video that can explain what I have learned until this video! Thank you, it is a better explanation then what I learned in cosmetology school! Please never stop what you are doing! You are amazing and I even though we have never met, I feel connected as an artist to you and it is a special community!
This was so useful, thank you for sharing! Color mixing has been a struggle for me for as long as I've been painting, and now I realize that I had never taken the time to sit down and learn why colors act the way they do. You taught it so well, and I loved the exercises you recommended. It doesn't feel so intimidating anymore. I'm so excited to try this out!! :D
I really like how loosely you apply the colors to make all these pretty bright colors. This is a great exercise to repeat often! Love the grays! Brought me back to art school 👩🎨
Katie! Thank you so much for sharing such videos! At the age of 43, I am planning to start painting with no background... 😀 I just loved your idea of painting as a stress therapy! God bless, take care!
I don't paint, my brother Steve was the artist of the family. But when I just want to relax, I pull up this video. Your voice is so soothing and I love to watch your hands.
Thank you so much, Katie. I've recently taken an interest in acrylics and I just love your tutorials. I have learned a lot, and it is all because of you. Your tutorials are so instructive and better than most. Thank you so much for everything! Have a great day :3
This was so helpful!! I feel like I got to take an art class for free! Thank you for sharing your knowledge like this, it’s crazy how much we can learn for free from the internet. This was inspiring! 💗
It's impressive to see your knowledge in art and colour. One thing they taught us throughout artschool was ALWAYS try to make our own colour from the primary three. You're so inspiring, calm and creative. Keep it up. I love your channel. ❤️❤️
Such an ABC way to learn so much in such a short time, adding the white and getting so many greys really surprised me.. Thanks a bunch! Happy Days and God Bless
I have a very hard time with mixing colors and I love the color swatch to practice color mixing. This video helped make sense of how to mix them. Thanks!
I have been painting for a couple of years now and I can say that since I started I am slightly better at color mixing. Despite that, I was still so surprised to see with how many colors you and combinations you ended up having! It makes me want to try and do this at well at some point, just to see how many results I could get. Thank you for another informative video, it is always very relaxing watching watching your videos. :)
Hi Katie. I have been painting in watercolour for many years and have enjoyed it but thought I should try some other mediums. I have tried a couple of pictures using Acrylics and to be fair, i have struggled but your videos have given me a lot of help, especially the colour wheels. I throughly enjoyed the sea scape with the wave and am looking forward to giving that a go. Your calm approach and reassurance that there is no right or wrong I’d great so thank you so much and keep going. Kind regards
Thank you Katie this was a great video I have struggle with mixing paints and you have explain everything very clearly.. Going to check on the 2nd tutorial Thanks again😊
Bob Ross was told by some viewers that they just listen to him to help them sleep. Can say the same about you, you have a very relaxing voice Really loving your channel 💕 got acrylics here, cannot get enough of mixing paints atm
Thank you! I'm usually not interested enough to watch a basic video like a color theory one all the way through but this was very informative and I actually learned quite a bit even though I've been painting (not too seriously cause I started young ish) for about 4 years! :D
Hi Katie, i just want to thank you for inspiring me to have a go at painting. I did somehow manage to get a 'B' (thats good for me) in art many years ago during my O' level exams, back in good old 1985. Unfortunately, I haven't picked up a paint brush since. Life kind of got in the way. I do the odd pencil drawing every now and then, but that has its limitations and i just feel its time to get brave and use some colours! Your channel is clearly going to be very helpful and i will be looking forward to watching many more of your tutorials. Cheers!
Yup that's kinda great and amazing colour mixing I bought the basic colours yesterday and I wanna see colour mixing so very very much thank you and I love your paintings they inspire me and you tooo
I slowed down the video like you suggested and it made the speaking sound sooo funny 😂😂😂 this is such useful information. I always would have added black to tone down a colour, never would have thought of using the opposite colour for fear of getting brown. Very clever.
Hello ....your Ideas, and concepts are truly Amazing! Thank you for taking the time to share your insight, and knowledge with All .....You Are Wonderful!!!
I was always taught that the complimentary colour to purple was yellow, as complimentary are colours opposite each other on the colour wheel. What colour theory are you using Katie? I know there are a few different ones these days.
+Sharon L officially it is, but in practice I feel the purple offsets the green better. It all depends on the colours you have. If it is more magenta/purple, green is the way to go. If it is blue/purple then yellow. Although there is a rule...they're are no strict rules 😂
I know these are a bit old, but there is the Munsell Color Wheel that uses purple and green as two additional primary colors instead of secondary. This causes the complementary pairs to be red and blue-green, yellow and blue-purple, green and red-purple, blue and orange, and purple and yellow-green. I guess it's not a very well known color theory, but I actually like the pairings as well. :) ETA: Also, when you mix complimentaries in the traditional system you don't get true neutral grays. Mixing red and green, for example, will result with a warm, brownish gray. But red and blue-green produce a truer, more neutral gray.
Hi Meyra, your comment reminds me of something we realised in our high school art class. Someone pointed out that everyone's paintings looked like the painter somehow, and we all agreed, it really seems to be true ☺️
So helpful! Thank you so much, I love your videos and you seem such a nice and sweet person, you make me love art, colours and nature even more! 🌼🌻🌷😽 Have a wonderful day and keep on!
Apply it thick enough and color becomes the artwork. My 4 favorite books: - Icon by Frank Frazetta - Bridgerton by Julia Quinn - The Joy of Art by Carolyn Schram - Great Fighter Jets of the Galaxy 1 by Tim Gibson
So glad I found your channel! I used to love painting as a kid but neglected the hobby. During this lockdown I've decided to get back into it and hopefully get the skill back. Your videos are helping! Also are you from Cheshire ways? We sound similar!

You are amazing, a natural teacher. I've met many poor teachers in my 38 years as a teacher, but you explain things in an awesome way. Thank you.

So helpful! Yes, I do remember not liking color wheel charts presented in an art class. Now, I see the importance. Thank you, Katie!
Amazing Grace I remembered doing color wheels at school and I felt the same as you. This video gives a fresh approach!
Amazing Grace I remember them as well but is so fresh and new?

The sway excersize will help me so much to cease better paintings

Love the yellow jumper! Very primary! Very pretty! 😉
Thanks! hehe I had to wear it for my colour video 😂
This is wonderful! Thank you Katie!
Is it just me, or does Katie's art look like her? Or her persona, maybe, idk.
Meyra I agree and I think it’s all about branding. She is recognizable 👩🎨
Hi Meyra, your comment reminds me of something we realised in our high school art class. Someone pointed out that everyone's paintings looked like the painter somehow, and we all agreed, it really seems to be true ☺️
Anni Barry I agree so much. This is what I noticed when I saw many artists vdos on UA-cam.
It’s interesting how you can just find this correlation between her personality and art
Such a great video...explains everything really well :-)
Thanks Katie I love your videos, I did your ocean wave...
You are my inspiration Katie❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
