I'm tired if people misusing the word "professional". That word simply means it's something you regularly get paid for. Has absolutely NOTHING to do with skill level. Lil' Wayne has NO musical talent whatsoever, yet technically he is a professional cuz he is regularly making money. You don't have to necessarily have skill at something in this world unfortunately to regularly be paid for it. But still you will be technically a professional.
"#1: Learn the basics" While I agree 100%, a pet peeve of mine is people who say this but fail to list what "the basics" are. Just for future reference. It isnt so obvious to most people on what the fundamentals are. Nice tips otherwise.
Post-it the thing with “basics” is that there’s just so much and such a broad spectrum, it’d be difficult to dive into that for a simple video. A lot of it is going out, looking up what those fundamentals are (if you’re self taught). For the most part, art programs begin with those basics and then build up from there.
Foolsupright I guess it depends on where your idea of preference of art is set, whether it be on painting or crafting or crocheting et cetera... then learn about the different types or sub-unit in that field; like for painting there would be abstract, realism, expressionism, and others. Then learn about the mediums; watercolor, oil paint, pastels, or the digital methods Then decide what your subject would be: architectures, anatomy, botany, aliens... once you’ve chosen, try to practice drawing or painting it in it’s “truest” form - it doesn’t have to be exactly like how your subject looks like, just make sure to attain its likeness. Then try redoing it as the sub-unit of your choice - if it’s realism, it will be much harder than let’s say Abstract since you will need to learn a lot about composition rules. Then try adding “embellishments” that make your piece you, whether using unconventional color scheme or the direction of your stroke... it’s totally up to you. I hope I’m able to “break it down”. I’m sorry if I didn’t.
Omg this came just in the right time. I am in the art orientated class in my high school, and i had yesterday a huge mental breakdown because of the lack of selfconfidence and anxiety and the fear of the future. Personally i'd like to see more of these kind of contents because it helps a lot ❤
I just can't believe your videos are free! I cannot begin to explain how much your videos have helped me as a beginner artist. Thank you!!! Oh and I would absolutely benefit from a "building artist career" video!
allow yourself to make bad art, and draw something everyday. If you have a small sketchbook and a pencil with you everywhere, you make it easy for yourself to do so. whenever you're waiting a few minutes: draw. whenever you take a break from school or work: doodle. when you see a weird shape, object or pose: sketch! the more chances you give yourself to draw small stuff, the easier it will become to actually sit down and make something big out of all the small stuff you've recorded over the days.
really appreciate the effort that you always put into these videos, and it's really inspiring to me to hear these things from someone whose art that i really love and enjoy seeing ahhhh ALSO @ 10:30 LMAOOOO i love that HAHAHA
These tips are everything I needed to hear right now 🙌 one that I'd like to add is: you do not *need* expensive supplies as a beginner. Focus on your technique and enjoy messing around with cheap supplies, because fear of using the expensive ones will hold you back from practicing and using them altogether
“The Basics” get brought up a lot in art videos I’ve been watching, your video has been the most compelling and changed my thinking on learning art fundamentals. All the things connect with what you say, it’s wonderful
That makes me really happy. I have a renewed love/understanding for the basics right now. Everyone is different- different goals, artistic aims, trajectory. I know some artists have very strict art education philosophies, but I am pretty open to personal path carving. I can't claim to know what every individuals' needs are or how they can best accomplish their personal goals. That said, for those who would benefit from giving real, dedicated time to the fundamentals (which I think many could), It's easy to miss the intrinsic value and enjoyment of that early step/stage when you're looking at it as a stepping stone or something to get out of the way, but when you learn to look at the learning process as enjoyable and fulfilling on it's own, It feels like you have greater availability to enjoy it and be patient. The climb is beautiful and enjoyable and so are the summits.
You always say exactly what i need to hear. Your advice is invaluable, sweet, inspiring, quirky, fun, uplifting, encouraging and always makes me want to paint! And your artwork is as phenomenal as you are 💖💖💖
It is actually pretty remarkable how much I listen and take to heart your words, Robin! You remind me a little of myself when I was a teenager. I was always coming up with brilliant insights that I hoped to remember for when I was older. I’m 36 now and it’s almost as if you have been passing along messages to me from my past self. Last year, you inspired me to pick up some acrylics and give painting a try. I enjoyed the learning process, and 24 hours later I had completed my first ever acrylic painting. (I had dabbled in watercolor in high school but not much.) Thank you for sharing your wisdom and personality with my son and I. He is a natural artist and we love watching your vids together. He watches mostly for your personality but I pause and repeat things he needs to hear about dedication, practice, hard work, creativity, but being hard on yourself, enjoying the process, learning and growing and experimenting without fear...etc Thanks for not exploiting our time too lol 💚
I love love love your videos on teaching and putting yourself out there! I'm so happy to see someone who is honest about art but doesn't take everything so seriously. You really have empowered me to just make art for me, not for everyone else's style. Please keep making awesome content like you've been doing. Always remember that your light shines so bright!
Your commentary is always so well thought out. I can tell you put just as much thought and care into your wording as you do your paintings. On video you are always so inspiring; students who work with you in person must be overwhelmed. Keep being you and thanks for all that you do for us!
I think the cloud scene within the cloud scene is transcendent, usually i see that word as ethereal, but today it means two colors meant to contrast and go with each other like from a why you were called to be an artist :) ty for this video. I mentioned on IG that a more tutorial type video would go a long way with a lot of us, becaussse you are so quirky and funny and would make the humdrum of normal tutorials not happen. As is there are some great ones out there if people wonder, like Chuck Black, Katie Jobling, Michael James Smith. I notice you don't do tutorials in the strictest sense, so if you don't plan to don't be offended by my idea. I love your vids, and this one was a gem!
You honestly give the absolute best advice, I'm really grateful (and have been over the years since you've been posting) that you've chosen to share your experience/life/lessons/knowledge w us. You're really good at it
Thank you for all the time, effort, and thought that goes into these videos. The content is always interesting: fun to watch and I always come away with something to think about to make my art better.
Your words are so inspirational, Uv given me a different point of view and now I feel like I can conquer my fears as an artist and stop seeing my art as a hudge hurdle and start enjoying myself and my art, it's time to let loose and stop carrying a burden that is not even there.
The advice you gave was so amazing and helpful.....I especially loved number 3 so much...and well all of them! Thank you for all the work you do for us on your wonderful videos!
I never planned on finding inspiration, tou just seem to get me inspired and help me find my center whenever i stumble upon an upload of yours. So thank you so much, youre helping lots of people just doing your thing here.
I love the tip on confidence. I'm not a confident person in general but especially when it comes to art I have a lot of fear and am not confident in my abilities to create what I want to so therefore I dont create at all, however when I let go of that I do pride myself (in other areas and art) on being able to experiment and just have fun no matter the outcome. So from now on I shall start to place my confidence in that and become more productive, and see more improvement (and what does that mean? more confidence in my abilities! Yay!) Lastly, thank you so much for all your effort and hard work that goes into your videos, especially this one. It must be very frustrating but it goes to show you really want to help and show us the best.
i woul love a video on building an art career, it's something i really want to do, but i just have no idea how or where to start. thank you for all your amazing videos!! ive enjoyed for over 2 years!
Wow, I was watching this and getting really anxious and then you got to #9 and said "calm down" and it was like a sigh of relief, lol. Wonderful video Robin!
I'm so glad you got to 9 and that it was in there haha. A big thing I've learned by sharing messages about relieving self assigned pressure when it comes to art, is how many people in the art community manage anxiety when it comes to their work. I think that if we could collectively work to remove some fear based decision making, it'd open up a lot more availability for creative energy, growth, and innovation.
Robin, absolutely perfect advice not just for artists but for anyone wanting a career in anything. I do wish I had a mentor like you 40 years ago because I sure could have used this encouragement. Now, I made a good living with my art, although not in "fine art" as I had hoped, but it took me many years to figure out on my own what you just shared in 11 minutes and 23 seconds. Icluding the ability to laugh at oneself. Robin, your work is beautiful and your wisdom is a treasure shared. Thank you.
I appreciate the acknowledgement of how many takes and times one must reorganize one's thoughts when putting together a good instruction video. I know this is normal as I do it, but it's helpful to actually see someone show this aspect of the process.
You are such a joy to watch! And amazing advice! But most of all, you have an amazing personality! Thanks for bringing smiles to my face. Love all your videos!
You are honestly so inspiring to me. My art style and subjects are a lot different however whenever I see your videos and listen to them I just want to spend the time to create. Thank you 💜💜💜
Absolutely priceless information. I love how you did so many takes! I think you were probably okay on the first one. Just be yourself and I've subscribed hands down. I love it and would love a more involved one. Can't wait to see your next one!
Lovely painting as always! One thing I would love to see a video on is a look through your sketchbooks. I always see sketchbooks as like a window into the mind of an artist, its so interesting!
Robin, I just stumbled upon your videos. I am thoroughly impressed. You are obviously incredibly talented, but to be so articulate and insightful at your age (which from my perspective is pretty dang young) is mind boggling. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.
Beautiful paintings! I love all the effort you put into your videos for us! 😄 Great tips for beginner artists- especially the one to take more than the studio art classes in college! After school I wasn’t ready to dive into a full time art job yet, so I’m glad I had another degree and worked in another field before becoming a full time artist because I learned all about the business side of being an artist!
I love your videos, I am 66, and am taking up painting, I have never studied art, but it is something I love. I am self taught. Thank You for sharing your advice and art.
I totally thought this was going to be a mountain until the light green went on the top of the wave and you started darkening the bottom. I kind of love that you didn't tell us what you were painting ahead of time! Great video.
Thanks for the great video! My favorite was "be realistic and calm down". I should probably write that one in big letters on my wall to remind myself! You had so much great advice here, especially the part about taking advantage of the community around you when you're in school. I second that bit of advice, I wish I had done that myself! I was only an art major for about half a semester before I started to have some problems with my vision. I sort of fell into despair and abandoned art for around a decade, I only re-discovered my joy in art last October, but so far it has definitely changed my life for the better! Thanks again for all of your amazing videos. :)
Well done, Robin! I appreciate your hindsight on your education and career experience, openness and honesty about how many takes were involved, mistakes along the way (liquids near tech) and your distinctive signature humor. It's gotten to where I know when a dose of Robin Sealark is exactly what I need, professionally and personally, which speaks volumes about your quality and uniqueness. Keep doing you. ❤😃
This video really helped me keep an open mind when it comes to my art. I've been doing art seriously for about 4 years now and I'm always scared to use things from other people's styles and try new things because I'm scared people will think I'm copying them. I've recently been a lot better at trying new things and this video really helps me keep my mindset where I want it ♡
Robin, I have something to say to you... *YOU ARE THE BEST!* It's sooo valuable to let us grow with you, instead of preseting a perfect end result (that probably nobody was ...ever). Lots of love ♥
I am 50. What i wish i knew 'then' that i know now is to be patient. Skill is learned along with natural talent. Do not be in a rush. In generations past Artist could take up to 20 years or longer for a single work. never be dissapointed with mistakes but turn it into something that compliments what you are doing to give the best work. Always pay attention to how much pigment is in the paint you use and how viscous the paint is. layering paints in thinner and lower pigment done in layers over time makes the most realistic work. Living Art Design is my fav. Especially studying Orchid growth habit and whether blooms hang or are upright. Using this you can create a space that is worthy of creating a painting. A lesson i learned from Rembrant. 'A Garden is a Beautiful Place to Paint'-Artist Brian Sheffield'.
The first tip really hits home for me. Art (particularly drawing) is something I'm interested in, but I'm certainly not 'an artist' yet (in the way where one is secure enough in one's experience and abilities to self-identify as one), and a lot of that is because I'm impatient with the basics. But the way you described "investing" in a craft with those basics sounds so much like what I already DID with music! I think I forget how often I rely on my foundation of knowledge when songwriting. Tonality, rhythm, historical significance, form, instrumentation... they're all things I learned about at school, and those lessons help shape my music to this day. (Not to mention, building my skill as a performer has made me a way better writer too!) You presented this particular piece of advice in a much more familiar and approachable way than I've heard it before. Thanks for helping me shift my perspective, so that going forward, hopefully I can apply that mentality of building a strong foundation to the visual arts too.
YES PLEASE make a video about the business of art! I would love to find out how much if any you spend on marketing and advertising. How much time do you spend editing video and doing social media interaction take each week to be successful? Please reveal your current income as a selling artist
This video is really excellent advice. I've been streaming art to Twitch and the community around it has helped me learn more and stay more motivated in a week than the 3 months prior to it.
I think water is really hard to create in any art form (drawing, painting, etc). But, Robin, you have really taken the time to study water over the years well enough that you're portrayal of water is so accurate and beautiful.
Learning is a lifelong prospect IF YOU Want to be an Artist that respects yourself. I have met more than a few people who “make art” but are not truly happy, invest in yourself and I think you have presented this idea in this video better than I have ever seen here on UA-cam! Thanks Robin, Have a lovely day!
Great video, funny how tips for beginners are always so helpful for artists who are a little past that stage 😆 I think it's always beneficial to keep things in perspective and not become overconfident with your current way of working !
I would really love a detailed video about how to start your carreer in art, especially the businesspart and gathering an audience. I never went to artschool and since i never got into the community or learnt art the "normal" way i have no idea where to start. I love to see your realistic paiting again and how much you care about putting out quality content c: Lovely video
Hello, I love your artwork and your inspirational dialogue! I would highly recommend reading “Steal Like an Artist” or “Show Your Work” by Austin Kleon if you haven’t already. His writing can be really empowering and you remind me a bit of him. I think you would enjoy his books.
You are amazing. Cute, funny, charming, skillful artist, who can tell serious thoughts very unseriously. Sending out respect and hugs from Eastern Europe. Thank you for sharing and for good mood
Right now I'm at a weird part of my art life where yesterday I realized I'm in college for what I have been subconsciously thinking of as "my future job before I get to be an artist" and you've really inspired me and helped me to realize that I actually want to be a painter and that I want to be a full-time artist so thank you
DUDE! Thank you so much for this video! I've been mainly a pencil artist or writer and fell in love with painting recently. Never sold anything just enjoyed it but have a woman who already wants me to paint some of her pottery! Your video is perfect for someone with anxiety who is a perfectionist 😅😂😁 and absolutely right on the business aspects of it. I cringe just thinking of it but seriously I am loving painting so much I don't even care 😍 I look forward to more of your videos! ♥️😁
These tips are pretty easily adapted to any craft. For me, I needed this for music more than art. But also writing? or videography? So many ways that this advice can be useful.
I love when I get comments like this! I use painting/visual art as a way to talk about topics that I also see wider application in. Sometimes I even adapt self help concepts to a visual artist lens for videos, but after the adaptation, I can still see the wider principle there. It's really encouraging to me when I see others read the content that way. Thank you for your comment!
Great to see you revisit that cloud picture - great end result. Yes please for a strategic career planning video. Love your neurotic attention to detail
Thank you for keeping it real, not squishing the dreams and actually making them feel obtainable! Love your work, Robin! If you want to dive in further, that would be greatly appreciated and I'm sure very well received. Much love! Thank you for helping me start my day on a positive path! X 💝🌻🍃

Thank you so much Suzanne
Honestly being reminded of these things being a full time artist is refreshing. Awesome video as always 💕
Aha!!! Number 11, spot on. Mindfulness in the studio!Love your style and you, as an artist and who you are.
I totally thought this was going to be a mountain until the light green went on the top of the wave and you started darkening the bottom. I kind of love that you didn't tell us what you were painting ahead of time! Great video.
Beautiful!! Thanks! Those waves are incredibly well done!!
Thank you for letting me know about these 10 things Robin! I'll be sure to remember abd use them as a guide as a beginning artist!
I spent years as an adviser and instructor; and your video is so much on the right path for any educational beginner. Congrats and thanks.
*YOU ARE THE BEST!*
It's sooo valuable to let us grow with you, instead of preseting a perfect end result (that probably nobody was ...ever).
Aside from being so talented, you are very energetic! Bless you. Thank you for the video!
Great video! Really good advices for any emerging artists.
(Not to mention, building my skill as a performer has made me a way better writer too!)
You presented this particular piece of advice in a much more familiar and approachable way than I've heard it before. Thanks for helping me shift my perspective, so that going forward, hopefully I can apply that mentality of building a strong foundation to the visual arts too.
love your cloudy work !
YES PLEASE make a video about the business of art! I would love to find out how much if any you spend on marketing and advertising. How much time do you spend editing video and doing social media interaction take each week to be successful? Please reveal your current income as a selling artist
Thank you so much Robin for this! I needed it.
Thanks souch for sharing this video totally hit home your awesome!!
What i really needed rn as a starting artist. Thank you so much Robin!! 💛💛💛
Man I reeeeeally needed to hear number 10 right now. Thanks
This is great and love seeing these paintings come alive!
I literally just watched this 4 times. Thank you Robin, you're a good teacher!
wow! I feel so honored! I've done that before with books that I really want the message to sink in on. I feel incredibly flattered.
Please do the strategy video! And by the way, watching your videos has never been a waste of time for me.
Yes yes yes! Please make a video about making an artist career. I'm doing that now and I need all the help I can get!
Love your art! As a young artist I will definitely do these!
Thank you for making this! Great information, and definitely sparked interest in pushing forward as an art-lover-turned-aspiring-artist!
Please oh please talk about creating an artist career!!!!!!!! You have no idea how helpful that would be!!!!!
We love you Robyn!!!! You rock😃😃😃
She makes everything look so easy ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Great video, funny how tips for beginners are always so helpful for artists who are a little past that stage 😆 I think it's always beneficial to keep things in perspective and not become overconfident with your current way of working !
Where have you been all my life!!?? You're amazing! And just so friggin HAWT!
Really beautiful wave & sky! Thank you for reminding me to realise I do show up and I do work hard - even if the results aren't always great!
thank you so much for these videos! love all your work
I would really love a detailed video about how to start your carreer in art, especially the businesspart and gathering an audience. I never went to artschool and since i never got into the community or learnt art the "normal" way i have no idea where to start. I love to see your realistic paiting again and how much you care about putting out quality content c: Lovely video
Thanks for all your advices!
yes please on the strategic video :) You're awesome!
Hello, I love your artwork and your inspirational dialogue! I would highly recommend reading “Steal Like an Artist” or “Show Your Work” by Austin Kleon if you haven’t already. His writing can be really empowering and you remind me a bit of him. I think you would enjoy his books.
Time well spent, you just described lessons to live by in mostly any endeavor. You did nail it!!
Absolutely Amazing
Excellent!Thank you.
This was very useful to me and my future business ^^ Thank you and you did a really good job with the video hehe
Nice sky
Thankss, it has pockets! ;)
In seriousness, that and the one behind it are so cool
You are a beautiful soul and I am so grateful for you 💗
So inspiring and insightful. You’re amazing, Robin! 💕
You are just a great lady. Thank you 👍
So adorable and love your advice!
Thank you for keeping it real, not squishing the dreams and actually making them feel obtainable! Love your work, Robin! If you want to dive in further, that would be greatly appreciated and I'm sure very well received. Much love! Thank you for helping me start my day on a positive path! X 💝🌻🍃
I love your art and your videos, I would like to see more videos on the business side of having an art career
Could you do a basic technique video for oils please
I love you humor! Thank you for some awesome advice!
Such a cool and fun video. I had to rewind so as to make some notes!👌🏽😊
