NEW BUSHCRAFT KIT: Boreal Bushcraft Pack, SRO Bedroll Cooker, Filson Guide Sweater, Barbour Liner

- Опубліковано 26 кві 2022
- This video was filmed over a two night outing. It features some kit that you haven't seen, so it's new to you, although I've had some of it for some time now.
I upgraded some months ago from the Frost River Isle Royale Jr to the Boreal Bushcraft rucksack by Skogsvana.
Don't get me wrong, I love the Frost River, but it doesn't carry well.
The Boreal I got has a lumbar support pad, a back pad in a sleeve (doubles as a sit pad, knee pad, ground barrier), and the hood has a zipper so things don't slide out as with the Frost River.
The pack is loaded with features and has module attachments.
The Filson Guide Henley sweater was recommended to me by the Filson team. After the recommendation I found a UA-cam video where Nathan from Northwest Resilience (an Alone contestant)
who stated it was "the nicest sweater in the universe" and that he is in love with it. He wore the entire time he was on the show out in the wilderness and it never let him down.
It's a chunky beast, and it's designed for shooting, however, the waxed padded shoulder, and wax canvas sleeves were attractive to me because I normally carry large logs on my shoulder, or just various sizes of branches that get snagged, so this smooth water resistant surface is a perfect fit for me. It is super warm and durable. Something I will have for life, however, it is outrageously expensive, yet has the quality the to back it up.
Since this is only the first day of three (I will release more footage), you will certainly get to see more of the pack and its features.
I didn't mention the iconic Hudson Bay 6 point blanket I've had for months.
The Barbour Bedale jacket I've had for years and recently re-waxed it.
The wool Varmland Fjallraven trousers I've had since last year (if you notice I usually wear knee pads).
The Hat is new as well, I just don't wish to wear out my other one you've seen so many times.
And of course, last but not least, The Ray Mears Woodlore Pro knife by Emberleaf workshops. I will do a video featuring it in future. A sort of soft opening for a legendary knife.
Please don't mind the Backpackers Pantry meal. I usually bring one as an emergency ration, if I'm too tired or don't have time to cook. They can really get you out of a jam.
The following day after setup is usually when I'm settled in and can prepare a nice fresh meal.
Stay tuned for the rest of this adventure.
Cheers,
Càrn

You sir, have AMAZING taste in gear. I have watched MANY bushcraft videos, to compare my gear (I’m a 22 year old broke college student) to see what gear of mine I could replace. And usually I don’t approve of the many things I see, but ALL of your gear, was just blissful to see, and all went well together. Thank you!!
That's brilliant mate, thank you very much! Many years of accumulation and trial and error. I think I've reached Zenith. Cheers mate
Very enjoyable to watch. Great looking gear and camera work
Thank you mate, much appreciated! 💪
Amazing video sir. Absolutely love your kit, so classic. Thank you.
Much appreciated Graham!
Good to see you my friend, That's some very nice new gear! Very cool 🤠
Well, good to hear from you mate! Glad you like it, I'll have some more items coming up. Cheers
Great to see you back in action. XXX
Thanks mate, nice to hear from you!
Nice bit of kit. Liked the video. Thanks for sharing.
Much appreciated, glad you enjoyed it John.
Nice to see you out and about! You got some new toys.... It’s getting warm down here... high 70s and low 80s this coming weekend. We’ve been getting the boats ready. Island camping coming soon!
Oh man, I hope you film some of that great boating and Island experience. Good to hear from you!
Looks like a beautiful day to be in the woods. I sure have been "eyeing" your gaiters, that'll be a future purchase for me. Loved the video and I appreciate your skills.
A beautiful day indeed. Yes, the gaiters are very useful. Thanks for coming along the adventure.
" There is no map for you to follow to take for your journey ... Louis & Clark " What a awesome new kit! Thank you so much for sharing this wild camp with us. That Filson sweater is looking sharp and also loved seeing the Boreal pack and SRO bedroll. The location you chose looks breathtaking what a awesome place for a camp. Can't wait to see the next part of your journey my friend.
No map indeed. Some people have told me that they have no access to such land. I hope that my documented adventures will bring them some joy vicariously.
I'm happy with the kit and have quite a bit more new items to venture out with in the up and coming outings. Stay tuned. Good to hear from you mate! 💪
Glad to see you back my friend. Hope all is well with you and maybe we will meet on the trail someday now that my knee is better! That Ruck!!!!! It looks so cool.
Hi Jimmy, nice to hear from you. Yes, all is well. Glad to hear your knee is back in order.
Yes absolutely, I go out every 1 to 2 weeks. Come join! Cheers
Awesome 👌. Loved it, very inspiring. . Cant wait to watch more of your vids . Take care 👍🏕
Thanks mate! Glad to share with people of the same appreciation. Cheers
Nice to wake up and see a new video from you. My favorite series on UA-cam. Hope all is well my friend.
Randy, thank you! It's persons such as yourself that compel me to continue filming. 💪
👍 You live in a beautiful part of the world. Another good meal. 🙂
Thanks mate! It brings me equanimity. 🌱
Great setup thanks for posting 👍
Thank you, a lot of thought goes into it! Thanks for coming along

Buen video amigo!!
Espero estes bien y esperando el próximo video.
Saludos desde puebla, México 🇲🇽
Gracias amigo!
In true Kaphart and Nessmuk style! Well Done!
It's a good life. Thanks mate!
Birch bark is my favorite tinder where I live. However cedar bark and at times pine flakes are also a great choice. Not going to lie was salivating I've the backpack waiting for a introduction. An icebreaker to get to know it. Awesome video. Good crafting.
Hello Nosfaratu, right pine sap works well, not many Cadars near me, if there was I make a board for my Bow Drill. Too bad. The manufacturer went out of business for the pack Perhaps one day we can share a meal by campfire. Cheers
Excellent content.
Much appreciated mate!
You have some very good quality clothing and equipment. My compliments.
Thanks Bob, good kit is good support for the environment one finds themselves in
Yes hé is rich
Ha, well, there are plenty of ways to acquire good kit. Firstly, I bicycle to work and don’t own a car, I eat two of my meals per day at work, no charge, I’m 50 years old, and have been collecting my whole life, I also contact companies with the contact me and send me free stuff, I make my own coffee and I don’t eat out much, I am single, I also get donations and support from my viewers, which I purchased equipment with. It can be done. Cheers mate
I really miss the deciduous forests back east, and all the leaf litter. Great vid, and love the Barbour gear!!
Well, I wish we had more conifers, they seem to be dying out over here. Thanks for your support mate!
@@TheLoreofBushcraft You can have some of ours from Montana, we can trade 🤣

Thanks mate
Top notch set of gear!!!!!
Thanks so much Steve!
Totally awesome.
Thanks mate!
I just ordered a Filson henley guide sweater. Can’t wait to get it. I own just about every other piece of Filson wool. This is my last for a while.
Excellent quality, however, the price is absurd! You will certainly enjoy it.
Nice Video 👍

Guten Tag Oliver, danke schön!
Great video ! 🍺
Cheers! 🍻
Informative and beneficial video
Thank you Corey!
Bru… like to to say , I like your style… keep making awesome vids…
That's really awesome of you to say so mate!
Skogsvana makes great gear . 💪🏻🥃💯
Indeed he does, it's just expensive and it takes really long, but it's worth it.
Good gear you have bro
Thank you very much, Whiskey, a lot of collecting
I would love to get away like that. Much of my gear is more modern with "backpacking" being the target use. I am now trying to get more "bushcraft" gear, leather, waxed canvas, wool blankets, etc. I love it all. I'd probably have to mix all my gear.
Yes, this type of equipment is durable and aesthetically pleasing, however, if you’re going to go this route, prepare for the weight. Let me know if you have any questions
Excellent video enjoyed watching ❤️👌🫡
You have top notch gear no messing around
I would love to do a camp with you
Hello, yes I have been able to acquire the best this way I can be confident that it will endure. I go out all the time and of course you are welcomed to come along. Cheers

Fantastic video. Really enjoyed it and look forward to the rest of the trip. Brilliantly filmed and great kit. Where is the leather water bottle from? I’d really like one of those.
Anyway keep them coming!
Hello Russell, nature was the backdrop and provides all the beauty. Thanks!
The leather water bottle was a gift, but I'm sure you can just type it online and get many options. Looking forward to the next one. Cheers
Oh man, your videos are better than tons of antidepressants...shoot videos more often!
Thank you Pavel, That's definitely what the mountains are to me, a place of peace and tranquility. Nature's answer to the chaos of our daily lives. Cheers! 💪⛰️🏕️
Been NEEDING new content(= I was wondering when you upload haha always enjoy your marvelous mystical journeys truly appreciate your time and effort taking us along my friend!!😁✌️💚 If you don't mind me asking since I haven't figured it out where abouts are you located country region whatever nothing specific?? Just curious the weather and factors of your place!!😁✊️🔥
Hello mate, I'm presently in the Northeast states. Back in the UK there's not enough Wilderness to explore that it has trees and woodland. Up in Scotland there are mountains but hardly any woodland except in Caledonia. You can't even carry a knife on public land. The states are more vast and have more variety in climates that are just a few hours away. I'm obviously in a temperate zone and I usually post the temperature in my videos. This last trip was -8 to - 14 c and that's where the gilet came into play.
@@TheLoreofBushcraft awesome makes perfect sense I live in New England USA and I think it's the most extreme of temperatures and humidity.. hey I really appreciate your support btw BIG THANKS means allot from a inspiring person!!😁✌️💚✊️🔥
Great video!!!! I too have the bed roll cook set from SRO. Wish the spike was about 4 inches longer.
My sentiments exactly! I've even been looking online for a longer pole or even a kit I could take parts from. Let me know if you find anything. Good to hear I'm not alone
@@TheLoreofBushcraft measure the width of you spike. ( Y’all prolly use metric system there) go to Amazon or a hardware store local and ask for a length of “cold rolled steel rod”. Then get them to find you a steel sleeve that both can fit into. Either take it to a wielder or get some high temp epoxy to affix it to the additional rod and slip over the existing for a extension.
Check your Instagram messages. Sent you a pic of a Tjm one that I copied.
@@TheLoreofBushcraft - I know a guy 😉
Yes, please put me in contact with him!
Luvvly jubbly! Looking like you're enjoying a nice camp there and I'm liking the setup. I started doing a bit more camping with wool and canvas recently and it has been a nice way to camp. I've been trying to strike a balance between comfort and lightweight with the wool and canvas kit and got a bit of inspiration from Giles Binyon here in the UK (check out his channel if you're not already familiar as it's well worth a watch).
Thanks as always for sharing and I look forward to the next installment. All the best 👍
Hello mate, well as you can see, my kit varies with climates and conditions.
In the summer my pack is always lighter of course, even if I do go traditional I'm still carrying less equipment than in the winter. In the summer my kit might weigh as light as 10 to 15 kilos. In the winter 20 to 27.
I also have my synthetic kit that I use I go hill walking for miles before I camp. Versatility is key., And of course, the more traditional equipment you use the better your skills need to be, so you can carry less. I did check out his channel, thank you. Good to hear from you mate!
Excellent video. What Barbour insert is that?
Hello mate, glad you enjoyed it. the liner makes it a four season jacket, it's great, Barbour sent it to me.

That is some very cool terrain you have there, what were those sausages you cooked?
Indeed, I'm very fortunate to have such a vast spread to escape to.
The sausages are made by Beyond Meat, I have a strictly plant-based diet that makes me feel like superman and the sausages hold up well during travel, they are extremely versatile when it comes to recipes and carry ability.
Where did get that grill and pot anchor? Looks really nice. Have you made it yourself?
Best regards,
M
Hello, I wish I had the space to make my own items.
I got it from Self-Reliance Outfitters, It's called the SRO Bedroll Cooker. I just wish the stem was longer.
Love it!
You have acquired some quality authentic trad gear there too buddy 👌 would be cool if you made a gear list of what you use.
Is this in the U.S?
Oi mate, yeah I've always had an appreciation for well made crafted kit. I'm presently in a states and live here now, back in the UK there's not much wilderness, woods, trees, freedom to roam, you can't even legally carry a knife on public land.
The states are less confining and more conducive to the craft.
Here is a video taken a while ago with a lot of kit for variety. The list with the timestamps are in the description. Cheers

@@TheLoreofBushcraft awesome yes I do enjoy the seasons here im the UK (Wales) but absolutely not much woodland here :(
Cool. Will check video tonight
Just curious. What does your pack weight fully loaded? Great video!
Hello Jacob, in the winter 20-25 kgs and towards Spring and Summer 15-20 kg.
My previous pack carried like a 12-year-old hanging on my back, which was not good.
My new pack has a lumbar support and a pad which helps to frame it. This makes a significant difference.
Great video! Where do you get the pack from?
Hello, unfortunately the bloke has retired. I think he has a day job and was just pursuing his hobby of crafts during the pandemic. He doesn’t even reply to inquiries anymore. Unfortunately, I don’t have a link because he’s out of business. You can go at Frost River Bushcraft packs but they don’t carry very well.
What state do you shoot your videos in? Beautiful woods!
Hello Ryan, yes it is, all four seasons of it. I'm in the northeast. Glad you could join me. Cheers
Супер👍💪
💪
Hello, I'm a new subscriber. I am in the process of slowly buying my gear to start hiking and bushcrafting. I was wondering how much is your average weight for your pack because it seems like you bring a lot.
Hello Mike, I actually brought extra kit with me for the video to display a variety. My normal kit during the Summer is around 14 Kgs and around 18-20 in the Winter. Food weighs a lot and I never carry water. Welcome to the Channel. Let me know if you have any more questions. Cheers
Hi, great old school gear! how many liters volume does this skogsvana backpack have? I also ordered a traditional pack for bushcraft on etsy. 👏🍻🔥
Hello, thank you! It’s 40 litres yet expandable. The company is no longer in operation, so I was lucky to get mine before they closed up shop. It’s a great pack and I couldn’t have asked for more. Let me know if you have any more questions.
@@TheLoreofBushcraft thanks for the fast answer, I ordered an 80 liters handmade canvas bag that I received but it's too big for me. I underestimated the size of it. But the quality is insane. Now I try to sell it and order a 50 liters version.
Hello, I would go with 40 litre, otherwise it will be too heavy and you don’t need more space than that.
@@TheLoreofBushcraft ok thank you for the answer. Yes I think I will order the 40 liter one. 🙏👍

Cool knife!!! What brand
Hello Mike, that's the iconic Ray Mears Woodlore Pro knife by Emberleaf workshops . The pioneer knife that has become a template for most modern bushcraft knives. This one was designed by the legendary Stephen Wade Cox who passed away, but he legacy will endure the ages. Let me know if you have any more questions.
Where are you in this video? Absolutely beautiful.
Hello, the North East States. It is quite a lovely place. I lucky to have such a retreat. Cheers
😉🤠👍
💪
Well,,, I was really hoping that You would TALK about Your Pack and Bedroll,,,,😢
Other than that,,,, Excellent site for a Camp,,,!!!
Hello mate, I’m a wee bit different, I simply list the equipment that I feature. My films are as real as it gets, it’s like looking through a window. No physical person is there so therefore I don’t talk (No one to talk to). I wanted it be an experience as if you were camping yourself. All I’m doing is filming my experience. And in turn you get to experience it genuinely.
Can you provide a link to the shop? Would love to get the wife and I into a pair of these rucks.
Hello, unfortunately the bloke has retired. I think he has a day job and was just pursuing his hobby of crafts during the pandemic. He doesn’t even reply to inquiries anymore. Unfortunately, I don’t have a link because he’s out of business. You can go at Frost River packs but they don’t carry very well.
Ugh that's such a bummer. Why do all quality pack makers retire... This is the 3rd packmaker that has retired before I could get there lol. Painful to find these nice rucks only to not be able to enjoy them.
Thank you for your prompt reply.
Understood, my ruck took 6 months and many inquiries. It got to the point where I was asking for my money back before he finally sent it. Multiple persons must have been inquiring as well and he must have gotten sick of the workload.
Where can I find more information on the pack in your video?
Hello, unfortunately the bloke has retired. I think he has a day job and was just pursuing his hobby of crafts during the pandemic. He doesn’t even reply to inquiries anymore. Unfortunately, I don’t have a link because he’s out of business. You can try Frost River packs but they don’t carry very well.
Good morning! I ve have been loving your videos and gear, but I can not find place to buy this new backpack. Anyway you could send me in the right direction? Thank you!
Good morning, the Ruck is no longer available, the producer discontinued after the pandemic ended. He must have went back to his full time employment. That pack takes 6 months to make at only £800 and is a lot of work. It’s very unfortunate because it’s superb craftsmanship at top notch quality, many have inquired to me of it.
@@TheLoreofBushcraft Thank you for letting me know! Have an awesome night, ill see you on your next adventure!
Hi tried finding the Boreal Pack however the browsers dont like the link. registered in canada but looks like a uk address. do you have further contact details for maker. Id like one with pockets on either side large enough to hold a bush pot cheers
Hello mate, it seems he has just continued the business. I know these things took very long time to produce, and I know that many people are complaining that it was taking so long. I think he got sick of those complaints. It is an excellent product but I think he’s discontinued unfortunately.
What type of boiling water pot is that? I like that…
Hi, that the Eagle Products Tea Kettle, they are great.
@@TheLoreofBushcraft Thanks 🙏
What coat is that?
Hello, that's a Barbour
Wow, thats a nice setup, beautiful pack, beautiful woods, nice gear, thats one of the nicest packs I've seen, Im seriously considering it. Just followed them on IG
Hello, yes I have put a lot of effort into my kit. Too bad the manufacturer of the pack is no longer in business. I’m glad I was able to snag one before they closed up shop. Thanks for coming along.
@@TheLoreofBushcraft Yes that is sad to hear, thank you for the reply, All the best to you sir.
@@TheLoreofBushcraftthat's sad to hear! What would you recommend as the next best buschcraft pack that would be similar/same as yours?
Thank you!
Hello mate, my last pack was the Frost River Isle Royale Jr Bushcraft pack but I don’t recommend it, it doesn’t carry well and feels as if you have a 12 year old hanging on your back no matter the alterations I preformed. I have seen some packs on Etsy but I have not researched their merits. I put a lot of research into finding and sourcing my current pack, sorry he has stopped producing. I am sure you will find something good as long as you don’t settle for less and only purchase the best. Good luck and let me know your progress. Cheers
What say you about those Helikon Tex gloves?
Hi Cody, I like them very much indeed, they're comfortable, durable and they protect my hands quite well. I did have to size up though.
However, I just recently upgraded to some heavy duty Elkskin gloves, things last longer when you switch them out regularly.
What knife sheath is that?
Hello Cloudy, that's the Ray Mears Knife Sheath that I ordered to go along with my Ray Mears Bushcraft and Woodlore knife. They are options when you purchase and available separately, as well. Let me know if you have any more questions. Cheers
@@TheLoreofBushcraft thanks so much !
I searched your backpack but the company went out of business???
Wow, it seems so. I will reach out to him and will let you know.
