  • Today we are looking at the Isle Royale Bushcraft Mini backpack. This is one of the best made packs on the market, and is a great addition to anyone’s kit.

I've just bought one and love. It's just the right size for the things I'll be using for picnics barbecues and our everyday walking trips 👍

Good pack, for an overday camping. Thanks for the share.

Gorgeous pack. As a lifelong trekker and not-enough-times-out backpacker my hang up with the majority of neo-vintage gear is that my Ospreys, Marmots & Gregory’s are more comfortable and ride 8 decades of ergonomic-technology better. So I keep the attraction to smaller things: Szco knives, Hult Bruk axes. Old Timers. Case. Even Bucks and Eastwing. I’d love to get a legit Nessmuk Era haversack but every time I see one that floats my boat they’re always either sold out or $250… for a haversack. Nonetheless I’m LOVIN this recent dive back into the realms of Hemingway, Hillary, Gephardt & Nessmuk. Both Gephardt’s audio book & Nessmuk’s are here on youtube and they’re a delight. And any time the world, in its current state of self destruction, overwhelms me all I have to do is put on one of Ken Burns National Parks DVD’s or watch some Ray Mears and I’m there. Btw: folks reading this probably already know but Les Stroud has been on youtube for 2 years and ALL of his content is posted. He is at 600k subs and has stated numerous times that when he hits 1M he will do some new Survivorman episodes…exclusively for youtube. He also does live AMA’s. God bless everyone 🏕

Thanks for your comment. I agree, when trekking, I’m going to be carrying my Osprey too. However, as you inferred there’s as much to be said for the pleasure of using this bag, as the practicality. There’s something truly beautiful about unbuckling leather straps from brass buckles you just don’t get from plastic snaps and webbing. I love the old-world look and feel of this pack and it’s so well made that I have no doubt it will outlast me.

Great video. If you do an additional one at some point, it would be useful for a little more comment on how it carries.
    Many thanks.

Stephen Voros . Thank you for your comments Stephen, and very good point. My intention is to do a “What I carry for bushcraft” type video at some point in the future. This will also cover the best ways I’ve found to pack and load it for the most comfortable carry, including the pros and cons for this type of pack.

Nice pack. Very similiar, but improved to the Vietnam war era ARVN packs.

Really like that Pack👍 my girls would want it pink though lol
You can just use a old bed roll mat it helps stiffen it up and keep shape. Plus it gives you a kneeling or sitting mat too.
    Good stuff mate
    Stay safe ATB Del 👍🔥🐺

Pink would suit you I reckon Del 😂
Yeah, I have half a foam mat folded in two which fits in the back, it’s more than enough for the pack to carry comfortably, not to mention handy for keeping your bum warm and dry.

I haven't come across anyone who owns the dark colour model.. Is this colour a so much better option? 🤔

They will only last a lifetime if you look after it as with all leather straps you need to make sure you protect them or the leather will crack.
    Great packs tho

Do you use something to create structure and support for the back such as a foam pad? Under what conditions would something like that be useful?

    • @darkwoodbushcraft
      @darkwoodbushcraft  Рік тому

Yes, I use a stiff closed foam mock ballistic plate (you can buy them for airsoft), it’s like a camping mat but stiffer. I also use it as a sit mat, but it stops kit sticking in my back and gives the pack good support too.

How heavy is your typical load out? The mini is a bit on the heavy side. Just wondering how you typically use the bag. Thanks.

This is very much my day pack, I have a full sized Royale Bushcraft for overnight. I’ve never had an issue with this pack loaded and have probably carried 30lb + loads in it on several occasions. Don’t buy this pack if you’re looking for ultra lightweight, but if you’re looking for tough and reliable, then this is the pack for you.
