    Wow I always thought the better the golfer the stiffer the shaft. It looks like I need to find out my club speed. Great video.

      Thanks Greg, yes that's a common misconception.I saw a beginner golfer recently who was a very good tennis player register club head speed of 110mph.
      Skill and strength are very different !!

    Great information. The clip of club head at impact was awesome.

  • @retired8123

    If your club shafts are too stiff, you'll have trouble loading them properly during your downswing. When the clubhead gets to the ball, the shaft won't unload properly and the face will remain slightly open, causing a slice.
    With club shafts too soft the ball may tend to draw a bit more from the forward bending of the shaft at impact (lead deflection) causing the face to rotate past square to be slightly closed.

    I got fitted with the Mizuno shaft optimizer 3 weeks ago. I'm 6'4 -280lbs with a 82 mph with a 6-iron. It suggested S300 dynamic gold. Ordered some used MP-54's with these shafts, have played 3 rounds, and they don't feel soft at impact at all, and no distance..... Was playing golf with my dad 2 days ago and he's hitting his Adams hybrids & irons with the LITE flex. For the fun of it I hit his 7 hybrid, 32 degrees a few times.......went 150 right down the middle, every time I hit it. I figured it would curve all over the place.....now i don't know what to do.

    The gear effect on off centre hits occurs with any shaft regardless of flex rating... The curvature on wood face is designed to negate the initial ball trajectory by imputing spin that shapes the ball in the opposite direction hence why there's such a thing as a toe hook or a heel fade

    How you actually load the shaft in transition is way more important than clubhead speed imo.

    I think I should use stiff flex for my driver. I swing that club a little harder than my irons which are steel R felx. I went from a slicer/fader my first few years to hitting a natural draw when I got better. My swing has improved but I’ve noticed lately if I don’t hit my driver perfect it’s a long low hook. I don’t have any golf fitting places close to me, so idk if I should switch from a R flex to a stiff flex for my driver. I’m 29 5’8 150lbs.

    I am right on the border of regular and soft. My shaft is 43 inches for better control , swing speed about 79 to 81. Using a regular shaft. I have been told swing speed isn't the only consideration for shaft flex. How aggressive a swing is , is also a factor from what I am being told? What do you think Gary? Spider Dubiel

    Can I ask you a question? Have you measured /annalised the following!
    1. Extra stiff (35inch) graphite shaft compared to (45inch) same shaft?
    Doesn't the 45inch naturally bend/flex more because of length difference?
    2. Same experiment with steel shafts.
    3. Can you proportional differentiate between impact of swing"force" and speed when hitting PW(120y's) and 1Driver((290y's)
    The impact of this on shaft flex. You don't hit your PW as "hard" as you do your D, do you?
    4. Shouldn't all this proof that your flex of shafts will need to differ gradual down from 1D down to SW.
    In my opinion 9Iron down to all the wedge's, shaft flex, have no significant influenced on accuracy or distance.

    True Temper Dynamic Gold. Whats the difference between say a R300 shaft and a R400 shaft? Both are regular but what does the number mean?
    I'm currently playing R300 in my irons but I've lost distance. I have played stiffer shafts in the past and swallowed my false pride and changed when I needed to but I have lost between 15 to 20 yards off my irons. I have never been long but I was happy with a 5 iron at 160 yards at a steady 80%. I'm fighting to get 145 yards with the same iron.
    I now the lofts have strengthened over the recent years and maybe the secodary shaft bend before and at impact which increases loft maybe isn't adding the loft that produces the extra carry. Then again, I might well be clutching at straws.
    I remember playing with a set of Wilson FG49 irons some years ago and they were fitted standard with R400 shafts. I played down to 4 with those. I always had difficulty repkacing broken shafts though. For some reason R400 wasn't a readily available shaft.
    I'd appreciate your input.

      I don't know. It could be how they produce batches. I'm going to find out from a club maker and get back.

    • @Barney29508
      @Barney29508 5 років тому

      Hi, again. OK - evidently its all to do with slight variations in stiffness. R300 is the most widely available. R400 and R500 and indeed R100 and R200 used to be more available but seem to have been dropped from the range because of the only slight differences in stiffness. If the player snaps one of these rarer shafts, the only way around it is to take a different shaft such as a normal Dynamic, (not a Dynamic Gold) and cut it accordingly to achieve the same bend characteristics. Any weight differences affecting feel, (swing weighting) are made up my lead tape or shaft filler, although copper powder should be avoided as this has a reactive effect with the steel in the actual shaft and a fracture could happen sooner rather than later.

    Hi Gary, impressive video. Very useful. I am planning to buy new irons with steel shaft. The speed of my 7i is 85 mph. Should i buy an steel KBS MAX 85 Regular or stiff shaft? I am a little bit lost. I appreciate your professional help.

    • @garycaseygolfpro
      @garycaseygolfpro  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Javier, both have positives & negatives just depends what is more important to you :
      KBS MAX 85 REG :
      Positives = more feel especially short chips
      Negatives = Wider shot dispersion
      STIFF:
      Positives = Tighter shot dispersion
      Negatives = Less feel
      Possible loss of distance.
      Make sure you try both before making your purchase.
      Best

    More to a shaft than just flex, torque, butt stiffness, kick points etc, and there is no standard for shafts across manufacturers so the average golfer doesn't know what flex they really have, knowing the frequency of the shaft gives a better idea of what flex fits you.

    I just had someone who played professionally that with 105 mile an hour speed a regular is fine. I was asked how far are you hitting it? I said 200 straight and then it goes 40 yds to the right, was told it was my technique. 156 mile an hour ball speed with a regular flex. Getting a stiff flex put on and am told it's not going to help.

      @@blakebrasher8884 I believe so as well. The fact that any of these people that seem to know everything won't admit that certain things have an effect on the ball flight is maddening. When I told him my ball flight and my speed he didn't want to admit the flex strength might have something to do with it. I even explained the arc or bow my shaft had at impact from a slow motion video and he seemed to be speechless about arc deviation at impact! I have to slow my speed to about 70% to be consistent and can probably hit about 225 carry consistently. If I can go 85% with a stronger shaft I figure I should be able to hit 240-265 carry consistently. When I told him I could feel the head loosing control he was speechless again. Get my driver back tomorrow and will revisit the conversation then.

    As someone fairly new to golfing I just have to say, I've never seen a sport with so much conflicting information and opinions in my life. I'm considering a driver and 3 wood and I have no idea what flex to use so I'm doing research on the matter and have come across no less than 10 different opinions on the matter. I guess it's the difficulty of the sport that generates this sort of confusion where there seems to be no authortive clear cut facts on the matter

      Hi there
      Yes I can definitely see where you're coming from !
      To try and simplify it .... it's no different to matching your shoes to the size of your feet !
      There is not one foot size therefor there is not one shoe size !! (you still with me :) ?
      There is not one clubhead speed therefor the need for different lofts and shafts on the market to match them.
      Go get a fitting that's the easiest/ quickest way to find your match !
      Hope this helps

      Gary

    I’ve only been golfing for 2 to 3 years now and I’m swinging my driver (Which is regular And 1 inch shortened) avg 97 mph. Do you recommend a stiff flex (because of the way I’m swinging right now) or do you recommend a x-stiff shaft (because of the fact that I just started playing and might be going to swing faster). I like to hear your thoughts on this.

    I thought stiffer the flex the more right it will go, as the club does not have time to shut, the more flex shafts more left it will go because it will whip and shut, at least this is my experience.

    • @richardthomas1674
      @richardthomas1674 7 років тому

      omar khan if you hit 100+ mph the club will twist as it hits the ball. Because the shaft is on the left, the club head twists out right through the shaft and causes slice

    • @sebastiannachilly500
      @sebastiannachilly500 7 років тому +2

      Shaft flex has no direct correlation to how you shut the club. If you have a quick release, you will leave a soft shaft out right because it lags behind, if you have a slower release, you will turn over a soft shaft because the shaft whips past your hands.

    • @richardthomas1674
      @richardthomas1674 7 років тому

      Sebastian Nachilly it has a lot of effect. The shafts stiffness also reflects on its torque. If a shaft has high flex it will have high torque it will twist a lot more. Especially as you hit the ball as that is a lot of impact. Average 95mph against a very hard object that created resistance. That resistance will contort the shaft and push the head out away from you and cause a right hand miss if you are right handed.

    • @sebastiannachilly500
      @sebastiannachilly500 7 років тому +1

      however, just becasue a shaft is stiffer, does not mean that it has lower torque. The proforce 66s has 2.2 torque or 2.6 i cant remember, while the aldila tour blue 75 TX has 3.4, and the HZRDUS yellow 6.5 has 3.3

    • @richardthomas1674
      @richardthomas1674 7 років тому

      Sebastian Nachilly typically though that is the case. There are other factors as well such as the hinge point.

My swing speed is around 100 but it's a quick motion through the ball I don't really have a "smooth" swing it's more of a "swing your swing" type of deal. It is true. It’s about the whip of the shaft that creates the most energy when hitting if you have a stiff shaft with a swing speed that is too slow to whip the stiff shaft then you taking a loss of yards when hitting but if you have that correct whip for your swing speed you will generate more energy at your strike because of the whip of the shaft according to your swing speed so more whip the more generation of energy which makes a more successful reliable shot. I only ben in the golf game for 1 year and I could tell you that 🤷🏾‍♂️😉👍🏾 so his chart is giving a accurate idea of what shaft you should be using. Not accurate information. Any professional club fitter would disagree with the swing speed = shaft flex theory. Each shaft has its own characteristics, no matter what the flex reads for one. for 2, transition on the down swing has more to do with proper shaft stiffness, and launch characteristics than swingspeed. One shaft may fit you better in X than S and another could be vise versa. It all boils down to the shaft having the proper kick point to either maintain or increase speed through impact and creating a comfortable feel and stability for the particular player. Your using the same out dated theory that hacks in retail store like dicks sporting goods use. very inaccurate. Sorry for the hate comments, good luck with future videos bub.
