  • The average golfer tries a ladies 45 gram driver shaft and also tests a 60 gram stiff driver shaft to compare the results, Does a shaft make a difference in a drivers performance, will club head speed increase with a lightweight shaft?

My golf buddy, now 81, has had a rough season this year. He's struggling with club control. I went bargain hunting last month and bought him a set of ladies clubs at bargain basement pricing! Happy B"day Sam! I cannot believe how much better he's doing on the course! Finally has a big "ole smile on his face!He loves the lightness of the clubs.

Your videos are very informative, with none of the hype & theatrics that some of the other golf channels find necessary.
At my age (75) & based on your test findings I'm going to a ladies shaft on my driver, & hybrids. As a weekend golfer, I firmly feel the average high handicapper shouldn't carry irons, (1-6) they will never master them & will only drive up their score & aggravation! I carry a 7, 9, & PW that gets me around the course in peace!🙂

We all get older - and even if we find ourselves playing more, doesn't mean we keep our speed just because we keep our fitness. I'm just back from a Titleist National Fitting Center fitting for the new T100s (I'm a current AP2 player with X-stiff and heavy Rifle 6.5 shafts). With the new T100S 7-iron head, my ball speed went from 112mph with a 120-gram shaft to 118mph with a 100-gram shaft - that's 6mph gain for 20grams. You may not think it's real, but the data doesn't lie -162 carry became 170 and gained 15 peak height

I switched to the Epic Flash Star driver and woods this year. I had been playing the Mavrik, and loved those. But the lightweight, more flexible Epic Flash Star clubs are in a league of their own. They spec out much like the ladies shaft you tried. I added 10-20+ yds on my drives and greatly increased consistency with my woods. I liked them all so much that I just ordered the 25 degree 11W and 15 degree 3W. The hybrid is coming out of the bag because I find the light woods so much easier to control and strike pure.

I am 41 with a slower swing speed started with a hand me down RAM set from a church garage sale. I am just starting to upgrade and added a Cobra FMax iron set in Regular Flex 60 gram graphite shafts with Medium grips and love them! The lighter shafts compared to the old steel ones are so much easier for me to swing. No pride issues here just use what works!

Great stuff, Andy. I’m a shaft tinkerer and my experiences have taught me that the mind and body soon accommodate shafts of most weights and flexes and your swings adapts to suit the shaft. I play an 85g X flex but I can hit my son’s 50g regular flex a not dissimilar distance on a good strike. Fascinating stuff… 👍🏻

"the mind and body soon accommodate shafts of most weights and flexes" Thank you. I've been saying this for 25 years. Within reason, and for the most part, the minutiae of gear specs don't really matter because our brains will figure out the best way to use the tool we're using.

    Hi Andy,
Just curious what shaft model is the ladies shaft you used in this video.
I had a kind of similar experience when just for fun I installed some 45 gram senior shafts in some heads and it was very interesting.
I am normally somewhere between regular and stiff in my irons.
Anyways I got great results… feel… dispersion and distance improvements with 45 gram senior shaft.
    Thanks,
    Vern

Andy I have to Ping's fitting center in Phoenix and got fitted several years ago and while I played somewhat better I found while Ping did a good job they are recommending what they have in shafts available for their clubs, and not necessarily what was good for me. I had a club fitting at Club Champion a month or so ago, and what happened was they kept my Ping G410 heads and went with a 40 gram Fujikura Vista Pro IR 40 gram R2 shafts in my irons, B21 3&4 Hybrids and 54 & 60 bent to 58 wedges Cleveland wedges. I also play with the 3 &5 Cobra Air Speed FMax Offset with 45 Gram lite shafts, and the distance I picked up in all the clubs is amazing.

I've recently been fitted for a SIM2 driver with smoke green hulk shaft and the fitter added weight to the clubhead. I didn't like or hit the driver well prior to the swing weight increase. After we settled on the swing weight he added hot melt and what a difference. I don't see anything on youtube about altering drivers for fitting this way for improvement. You should try, you might see some gains in distance, accuracy and feel as I have.

My swing speed is very similar to yourself, 98/100mph so always interest in the results you get. I was on a trackman last weekend because I had bought a 2nd hand Mizuno ST200X with a 50g CK series flex A shaft. I hit my present driver , an Epic with a tour AD IZ6 stiff shaft and also with a handcrafted Project X yellow 60g shaft, and a Kura Kage tini 50g stiff. I noticed it was easier swinging the Mizuno with the light shaft than the Epic with the Project X and Tour AD IZ. What was noticeable was when I put the Kura Kage TiNi 50g stiff shaft in the Epic it became easy to swing and I picked up about 5 yards. Interested in getting a 45g shaft and comparing that now

Took couple years out of playing from injuries. Came back and played a senior driver shaft for 4 months, then into a regular, now in a softer feeling stiff shaft... found when you want to go after a shot it just leaks all over the place.. constancy is key for me.

There are so many variables in shaft stiffness from different manufacturers as well. What is XS in one might be S in another. I agree weight does make a difference. I can't swing whippy flex shafts - I plough the club into the ground as my hands get to far in front, but a stiffer shaft and I get through no problem.

My experience is the same as David. I am 72 Yrs with a recurring back problems and a driver swing of around 80mph. The 'A' flex 50 gram shaft has added at least 15 yds + to my drives. I was just fitted yesterday for x2 hybrids, again with 'A' flex shafts. . My new 4 hybrid with an A flex shaft is going further than my old 5 wood with a regular flex shaft. The main benefit for me is being able to swing easy, with less stress on my back. Which is going to keep me playing golf for many years to come. Also, try the new Cleveland woods. Great price and performance 👍🏻

I recently went down to regular shaft in driver as I slowed my swing speed to focus on plane and face at impact . . . I would definitely try this out . . . what stigma on ladies/men’s . . I beg to differ. You change not calling the “red tees” the ladies tees. But, they are still the ladies tees. These women to me are pretty foolish. They don’t like the ladies tees called the ladies tees, but they still play from the ladies tees. Changing the name from ladies to forward tees solves what? Ego people, it solves ego on the ladies part. Do you want to guess who wanted this name change?

I've played a 60-70 gram stiff driver shaft since graphite became the thing back in the 90s. Driver has been my best club since I can remember but this last season I was not getting as much out of it as normal. I'd seen a couple videos about lightweight more flexible shafts that intrigued me so I bought an Evenflow Riptide CB 40, 45 gm std length shaft. I can say without a doubt the results are great. I am bombing it again as it perfectly matches up with my Cobra Aerojet LS driver. Give it a try!

  • @starks1974
    @starks1974 2 роки тому +2

Good stuff Andy! I think the bigger difference is the shaft length. Liam, over at Golfmates, put in a 5wood reg shaft into his 3wood and was cracking it. The big difference was the length.
This makes sense as club makes promote the longer shafts to advertise longer club distance. In the late 1970s to early 1980s, the most common length for a men's driver was 43 inches. Back then, the typical 3-iron for men was 38.5 inches with all other irons decreasing in half-inch increments to the wedges. So current women's iron length is what men's length was back then.
Another challenge, Back in Time club testing. Test a newer set of clubs but to standards from 30-40years ago. I remember starting out not having issues with hitting my long irons but now who is confident hitting a 3 iron vs hybrid?

I went to my local big box store to hit a few drivers. I pulled what I thought was an S Flex Ping G425 Driver and a few others. I was hitting the Ping very well and farther than the rest. After closer inspection it wasn’t an S flex, it was an SR flex! My normal swing speed is around 100 mph as well! I think that is partly why that people that use/test that pricey Autoflex shaft have such good results. Even their X and XX shafts are very light and flexible. They are just branded as that flex even though there is no industry standard. My wife said that women’s clothing designers do the same thing giving women larger sizes but labeling them as smaller lol

All very well if you can swing easily and smoothly. To me as a 61 year old I make Rahm look like Freddie Couples! I actually swing my driver at 95 mph and have just had my shaft rechecked on my new driver as I was completing my swing too early and not timing my drives as I had no 'feel' for my clubhead. Consequently I was changed from a 50g reg to a 60g stiff. Horses for courses.

I’ve loved your series on using lighter shafts. Your theory is quite sound. I’m in my early 70s and have had multiple surgeries through my mid-section plus a broken left wrist this spring. It’s been tough regaining strength in my left/lead arm and regaining speed and rhythm through the torso. I am currently testing a Tour Edge E721 7-iron with ladies’ shaft. Not yet working for me, but I’m going to add some tennis player’s tape to the grip to approach jumbo size. You might think about exploring grip sizes also. I came to golf through tennis and have to resist an over-active right hand. I find the jumbo grips help me quiet the roll of the right hand.

I'd be curious to know what the swing weight is on the club with both shafts. I think the 60 gram is going to have a higher swing weight because of the shaft weight (+15 grams) and the extra inch of length. My guess is the 60gram is more like D1/2 and the 45 gram is like C7/8. That makes a huge difference in how it feels.

Mr. Average- You were testing two changes: shaft length and shaft flex. So unfortunately we don't know which factor (or both) were important. Maybe you could test equal length shafts of the different flexes to see for sure?

I'm 74 with a 13 index. Just bought a Callaway AI Smoke driver with a 40 gram ladies flex shaft.... best golf club I have ever owned. Don't let your male egos get in the way of playing equipment that is best for you. My friends all want to hit my driver now but none of them will swallow their pride and get a club that is right for them.

They make a club "as seen on TV" that uses a slightly smaller driver head with a senior shaft and it is also just a wee bit shorter than a normal driver shaft. Much easier to hit and control, in my humble opinion

Just looked at this video and have seen others like it. Your spin rate is too high and if you deloft the club the spin will come down which should result in more distance. I recently built a ladies shaft and the first go round didn't get the results that I was hoping for. The weight was around D4 and with this set-up it needs to be lighter, shortened the club to 45 inches which brought it into the C range, I will be going to a virtual range to try it out.

i've done a lot of testing with different weight and flex shafts. It is no myth. The flex needs to match the club head speed. THere have been many discussions on this. Some say that to weak of a flex will cause the the shaft to load and unload too soon causing the ball to go low left. Too stiff, right fade. For me, and I have hit them all, too weak of flex causes a weak fade. Too stiff a low and left shot. With a regular and senior shaft I get good distance with horrible dispersion. If I swing hard I can even get a double flex when jumping at it at the top. If it lines up and 2nd flex unloads at the right time, I can hot bombs. But that is one in 20 or less. When I was younger and faster that would happen with Reg flex. Now with slow swingers like you that only carry it 220 and 240ish total, who knows. You may have slow enough club speed to be able to use a ladies flex.

I also tinker with shafts. But only spent the big bucks one time and that was only 65 bucks for a driver shaft. I'm 71, and play a mix of flexes and weights. Ladys and senior ln my driver and woods and my new favorite is a cobra shaft I found for 10 dollars a peice. Incredible for me. Finnaly broke 80 for the first time. How you modify and set up the shaft makes a big difference also.

Getting fitted takes the adventure out of figuring it out for yourself. I've spent a ton of money figuring it out but what an adventure it has been. I probably know more about how to set up clubs than most pros. It's all in your swing and that dictates what you should play. Everyones swing is different. I have perfected my swing. Now I'll spend years trying to repeat it over and over again.
