I'm concerned by the assumptions about the 2-person family. Having children is not the sole reason to have a large and lovely home. And who's to say they won't have or adopt children, or invite a friend to live with them, or have parents or guests come to stay? Or simply enjoy tea for two in a large sumptuous space.
Two people living in (and heating) a massive building and we all applaud. A family with 6 children living in (and heating) much less space and we claim they are ecological criminals destroying the earth.
Having 6 kids destroys the Earth.
I drive past the Swindon house regularly...It stands out as an EXCELLENT renovation...and often catches my eye.
I didn't realise it had featured on the show until ...just now....Feb 2021.
The house deserves to be show cased....Congratulations to the Mortimer's...for making something of quality. A credit to them....and an enhancement to the town.
In big houses, think for old days (yours or parents). Have a potential bedroom and small bathroom downstairs
I really hated her suggestion for the Hong Kong couple. That study she suggested to make a bedroom is tiny and attics are really nice bedrooms with sky lights etc... Why would you make the attic a study? It's such a huge room and for 90% of the time will only be a study, not a guest room... And why is the other couple adding TWO en suites? They'll have a family bathroom, toilet, guest ensuite and their ensuite... For two people 90% of the time...
I don’t understand why they didn’t just use that attic room as their bedroom and then have the kids in the three bigger rooms with the box room as a spare room like 🤯

I agree. The attic could be split into 2 rooms for the girls. An office on the 3rd floor is inconvenient (stair wise) and who wants to close up the office to accommodate overnight guests. A small handicapped bedroom on the first floor isn't a bed idea for many reasons.
With how many houses people spend in offices working, it makes sense to have it in the attic.
I loved the 1930's house renovation, they achieved a perfect balance of old and new, a real bonus uncovering those fabulous doors.
Dressing rooms, especially towards the bathroom are amazing. I would cut into the bedroom for more space. Who needs that much floor in a bathroom! Especially not the main one!
The dressing room is away from the bedroom and logically your clothes gets stripped off your body towards the bathroom.
Also I don’t get the excessive kitchens. Just how many chefs gonna cook there at the same time! I guess I learned in Japan having 35cm of actual counter space , how to be efficient, so a uk “small” kitchen is plenty
So many people eat out or order in these days, not so much cooking going on in these giant kitchens, it's ridiculous!
It really depends from person to person. We cook our meals at home every day, we go out for special occasions or on the weekends. To have a giant kitchen like that would be absolutely fantastic for us. Here in Asian houses, kitchens used to be really tiny, we have had a renovation recently. The open space and bigger kitchen with plenty of storage make it look less cluttered and I actually enjoy cooking cuisines more.
Amazes me how we grew up in a 4 bedroom 1 bathroom,mum,aunty ethel,dad and us 7 children,we all went to uni all fit and lived to over 80,I'm the youngest 75..
We were bought up not to have debt,I'd be terrified of all the debt these people go for.
Debt isn’t always bad. It can be perfectly manageable, and I think these couples have it in hand.
Beeny is ALWAYS trying to do away with closets; those big walk-in-wardrobe-closets. Funny for someone who has so many different clothes!! And great motor-cycle-cut jackets!!
Yes, the episode in which the husband was made redundant again: when they finish the remainder of their project i hope they still build a WIC...even if, by way of having expanded the son's room + that 4th bedroom, it ends up a tad smaller.

Every time someone wants to build a garage to help keep their car out of the weather, have a place for tools, and to keep the kids bikes & sports equipment tucked away, she talks them into incorporating it back into an extra sitting room!
How many sitting rooms do people really use? The answer: only 1... the one with the TV in it!
@@incognito7833 Some people read. (I've not watched tv in years). But... I would opt for a garage/storage/home for tools room over a second sitting room any day.
Sarah ABSOLUTELY loves what she does, the look on her face when she showed them the drop down bed at 26:00, goes to show how passionate she is. I would love to meet her one day and congratulate her for how good of an Artist she has become through the years.

Why do they need so much more space? They don't have any children. It's crazy.
I don't get it either. For that 150K, they could have left the house the same size, completely redone the interior, and made it gorgeous, or at least when the pipe was discovered, make the extension smaller instead of bigger. That's a lot of extra space to clean.
Did I miss something? Was it mentioned they could not have a child??
I am always surprised to see builders using hand saws. Why are there no Compound Mitre Saws on site??? Even I have one and I'd be taking it along to save my arms and my energy. If you're doing THAT kind of work all day long, having an electric saw saves time, money and your stamina.
I don´t understand why people always want to have more space. We are going the opposite way - pairing down and reducing to what wwe actually need. It gives a lot of financial freedom and the time to enjoy live, instead of maintaining a huge household.

The house we just bought is 1,000 sq. ft. smaller with less than half the mortgage of the one we just sold. We're in our upper 60s and the 30 year, 3.5%, mortgage we took out 5 years ago was feeling very oppressive and scary. Our mortgage is now a 2.5%,15 year, $110,000 one vs a $229,000 one. We were going to have an $80,000 mortgage, but we decided to take out some cash at closing for some upgrade. The house was sort of rundown (and dirty) so we needed some cash to do a little bit if work inside.
We sold our $600,000 house (that had appreciated $180,000 in 5 years) and the one we just bought cost $408,000 (U.S. dollars). This is a pretty good price for where I live.
The homeowners insurance and property tax is about half of what it was for our previous house so this makes our payments even lower.

The short curtains are always a mistake. Looks like a person chopped off mid-hip and standing in mid-air.
Every episode has the same stupid ending..."You spent 50,000, and added 100,000 of equity to the value of your house". If it were so easy, everyone would do it. Like house flipping, people think a new carpet and some fresh paint, and suddenly the same house is worth 10,000's more. And the "you've added equity to the house" is all based on Beany's pie-in-the-sky estimate pulled from nowhere. Why not get REAL estate agents to give a REAL quote!
Desk used daily in attic corner without window and rarely used single guest bed next to big window in same space was an interesting choice; I would have preferred working under window...
Keith and Jo have just trebled their heating bill. No walls to break it up, one huge box.
I have honestly lost count of the amount of times I see people who are 'we like Art Deco' and then they end up with a trad Edwardian bathroom and 1950s living dining. I didn't feel the back living space was too big for two people but that bathroom definitely was!

love the smaller home, I do believe the other home is slightly too big for the lovely couple. But Im sure they will make amazing memories!
I so, so agree!! Where I live a lot of the houses built during the 1970’s & 1980’s had sunken living rooms. Whoever thought that was smart was dumb!! Both my mom’s previous house & mine have sunken living rooms. My mom fell several times just going down or up one step. I’ve fallen, too. I can’t imagine her trying to go up or down all of those stairs at 85!

That attached garage on their house couldn't be uglier. Why don't these 2 professionals hire an architect/interior designer? Those professional design teams have the skills of space planning & that skill is priceless.

I don't know how homeowners on this series can build onto their homes and upgrade the interior for just 30K - 60K pounds sterling (that's about 2/3 the amount of U.S. dollars with today's exchange rate. I don't know how to type the correct symbol for pound sterling.) We're upgrading our 11 year old house in the U.S. and we've had to spend $10K to replace the heater and air conditioner, about $7500 to paint 2100 sq. ft, and about $6700 on flooring for just the upstairs--about 900 sq. ft. If we wanted to build on it'd be about $60K minimum--and that'd be stretching it. I doubt banks here would lend money to a homeowner who's upgrading a decrepit house.
I like watching this series because the existing architectural features are respected. Each home is unique. I quit watching a different series because all of the houses--no matter what size, style or age--were turned into similar experimental contemporary homes. They got boring.
Actually 60k pounds is around 81k U.S dollar. A friend of mine whose a builder told me that it is NOT prudent to upgrade your house where the value is way over the average of the neighborhood. So if all the neighbors houses cost 300k. don't do a 200k upgrade coz no one will buy a 500k house in a 300k neighborhood. @happydays, if the costs are running high like you say maybe moving might be the better choice.

Fortunately the improvements we're making probably won't make our house more expensive than the ones around ours. (Knock on wood.) The changes are mostly cosmetic. We'll be, however, spending about $25K to finish the basement, but finished basements in my area add a lot of value to homes.
It was really nice to find a house that was $192,000 less than the one we just sold 3 months ago. We cut our mortgage by more than half. Our realtor got the sellers to knock off $6,000 from their asking price so that helped offset the price of the new furnace and air conditioner.
The furnace and air conditioner had to be replaced otherwise it would have made the house difficult to sell--plus it'd be miserable inside if we hadn't.
I live in an extreme climate--the Rocky Mountains High Desert in the U.S.A . The temperatures go from below zero Fahrenheit in the winter up to 110F or even more in the summer so a homeowner can't skimp on a good air conditioner and furnace. The temperature can swing by as much as 40 - 50 degrees in one day. Usually a buyer wants to know how old the HVAC system is and how frequently it's been serviced, which is usually noted on a log on the furnace and water heater. The house inspector didn't discover how bad the furnace and air conditioner were otherwise we might not have bought the house.
Your friend's builder is very wise.
Five bedrooms are very desirable where I live. A 5th one will add about $50,000 to the selling price of a home. When we finish the basement we'll have a total of 4 bedrooms. It'll be very easy to make an additional one in the basement to bring the house up to 5.
We bought our son a small 900 sq. ft. house that was built in 1887 (he's on disability). We bought it for $116K and put $40,000 into it. The latest Zillow listing said it's now worth $250K. Zillow valuation has been very accurate in the neighborhoods I've lived in.
@@happydays1336 Yes, I agreed that a comfortable space for the family is more important than the resell value. Definitely the heating and cooling need fixing for comfort and sanity:). And like you say with your son's house over time the value will appreciate considerably to cover upgrade costs. Good luck with the renovations!

It's mainly young people who like the retro look, as an older person I just don't like it, reminds me of my grannies house, I prefer modern and clean lines, loved the St Alban's renovation
Lovely to see a couple with different taste who decorated the 1930's house so sympathetically and didn't just dispose of all the old character and furniture, like so many do. Even the modern extension had a 30's touch.
Hard to believe the 2nd couple kept that ugly roof!

lived in St Albans for 1 year, awesome town. Loved it! loved the Wednesday farmers market, the waffle windmill house on the Verulam lakes. It was amazing!!!!
l luv Jo and Keith, she's gorgeous and always smiling, a couple that holds hands and when she looks at Keith man she smiles with adoration and who can blame her shes got a stylish man, luv all their style

The cost of moving in this show is not the price of hiring a company to transport your stuff, it is how much additional money you would need to buy and move into your "dream home" if you sold your existing home to go there. (Cost of moving = Dream home price minus existing home price.)
I love this inspirational series and with inspiration comes motivation......We are building our first home in Bali and for a 100KAU$ budget. My builder husband s calling it a "Retro Fit" build and I know the audience here will appreciate what we are sharing. Dream Big merrily merrily cause life is just a dreamX

Window seats would have looked nice in the big dining room which looked a bit bland I thought, although I'm sure they will add some personality to it as they move forward
