But there's a good chance they'd have been refused because of ancient 'rights-of-way' laws that are protected to death in the UK. It has the benefit of preserving a country's heritage... but can sometimes just be asinine/lacking in common sense.

Exactly, but British rules can be extremely, notoriously inflexible. Would even consider converting part of the old house for the access, instead of using the far part of the garden as the new access if it was the only way to compromise. The house must be cohesive.
I would create big open space upstairs living space and do guest bedroom+bathroom and maybe office/storage in one part and family bedrooms in the other downstairs
The best solution for the young couple would have been to build a extension towards the garden and the part on the other side of the public way would become a garage with a small living space for guests over it.
That's so sad. I was just watching the episode and thinking why she got pregnant again while dealing with such big task of caring for a special needs child. My prayers go out to her family 😔
That’s sad, but given the quality of life she had in the state one has to wonder if maybe it was for the best. To never be able to play with other kids, to never have a boyfriend or girlfriend, to never live an independent life, to be continually dependent on others, to keep visiting doctors and therapists for this procedure or that and have strangers poking and prodding you all the time. Is that really a life worth living?
I would imagine the show arranges rental/discounts for the owners. A little bit of trickery... Also the owner's previous furnshings never seem to be used!
Its a public right of way, councils dont own them so they cannot give them away. Public rights of way are owned by the public at large and have been since Victorian Britain.

You would probably need a proper lawyer to tell you if that can be done in any way though, I am just a walking enthusiast so we know the basic laws around the public rights of way but thats maybe a bit specific for me to answer 100%. I dont think they can though.

The other ideas are too unrealistic, day to day. The alleyway can hide criminal activity, so having it to the middle of the house is a poor idea. The entryway off of it is even worse. Otherwise resign-wise the place looks nice and much of it works.

I don't see what the problem is with the passageway, it's called a ginnel and plenty of town houses have them. Although it's usually with one house on either side there are many conversions which have the house on one side and another bedroom over a ginnel. I like the light they put in it and it's great that a public right of way that has maybe been there for over a century has been retained. They will get much more out of their upstairs living room when they can get a balcony built with some steps down to the garden.
Why couldn't they have petitioned to have the access way moved to the far side? I don't see how that could be wrong and the house would have been totally connected.
I really don't want to be mean, as I feel it's great people are donating. BUT when you can't afford things....why are you having another baby??? They cost money.
I’m saddened to hear about the passing of Iona May. Vicky was such a loving dedicated mother. I’m sure her daughter, even in a short span of her life have felt all the love & sacrifice of her mom. May she rest in peace. As for the other house, that alley is so cringey. I don’t know why it’s not possible to move that on the other side. But I would have just converted that to a separate den/office/guest room.
honestly I feel like the single mom also has too much stuff. in germany such a space is considered normal not small! Escpecially for four people. But I get that for her daughter it would be better to be on ground level. still you also have to clean and take care and heat such a massive space
my experience with friends who have disabled siblings or parents is that they end up with a lot of dissociation, unintentional neglect and high ACE scores. People really need to remember all the humans in the equation ❤

I live in Northern Ireland, which is part of the UK, and I would assume that grants and benefits for disabled people are the same in England as they are here. There are grants available to make homes suitable for disable folk, no matter what their disability, here the gov will pay for large extensions, suitable bathrooms, internal elevators etc. I really do not understand why this project had to be crowd funded?
That would mean court hearings & getting the public works council involved. I know it may seem a simple solution if common sense is concerned, but since it’s a public alley & not part of the private ownership, that would mean going through all those hassles. And even if it gets approved, that would mean all your neighbors accessing your supposed private garden.

It is not only the moving costs (Truck, packers etc), but includes the cost of buying their dream house
