Not only is he a fantastic singer, you have kind of pushed him up to genius level in his choices of vocals. Not to mention the the arrangement and the band. I have watched about a thousand reaction videos but those with musical training understand exactly what David does and just continues to astound. Most reactions, while appreciating his voice, also get lost in the song and the emotional reactions are great too. This song touches some people so deeply and personally, it’s that powerful. Although the song is half a century old and the original was in folk pop style, David’s vocals and intensity while performing brought it to a whole new level. It’s a perfect fit and perhaps the best cover song of this century.

The initial reaction people get (the goosebumps and hairs rising on the arms and back of the neck) I reckon are pretty much the same for everyone hearing this version of the song for the first time and this wonderful arrangement, production, and rendition. Much has been said about David Draiman's extraordinary vocal talents, but rarely do we hear about where he got them from. Fact is, he comes from an orthodox Jewish family and trained as a young man to become a cantor within the Jewish religion, but chose to break with tradition and follow a different musical path, which didn't go down too well with some of the elder members of his family (as you'd imagine), but they did all make up in the end when they saw what sort of impact he made in the world of heavy metal and how happy he was. The official video of this song has (last time I checked) attracted over 600 MILLION views and even Paul Simon, who wrote the song back in the early '60's loves it too, so that's the ultimate validation for all concerned.

I’ve been listening to this version of the Song of Silence since he first performed it on Conan. I always end up crying like baby. Somehow I feel this performance was a sacred “offering”, if you will, to humanity. Paul Simon’s prophetic words, expressed with such powerful and pure conviction by David, is the ultimate musical experience. It touches our hearts and moves our souls to share their love for humanity, their fears, their pain, and ultimately, that faint glimmer of hope. It is my favorite piece of music of all time.

Every time I hear this song, it's always like the first time. I don't know anything about compression, resonance or flagellation (which sounds like something quite un-religious?!?!), but I do know that David Draiman has an amazing instrument in his voice which he uses masterfully - tender and soft, powerful and angry, slightly thin and heavy. All in this song which gives me goosebumps with every hearing. Looking forward to you song this Friday Caleb, sure to be a good one. Thanks for the video and review.

The song was originally written about the struggle it took to get a record deal. None of the labels wanted the type of high quality music they were producing, just the dime a dozen albums from the cookie cutter groups. They were saying the content was too controversial and "beatnik" for what they were looking for. S&G didn't want to be just another group making gold records.

Hi Caleb, loved your reaction to what is one of my favourite pieces of music. Worth watching the music video off camera as well as it's very powerful. Have you heard of the HU, can't believe you haven't reacted to them yet? Would love to see you react to their song Wolf totem or Yuve Yuve Yu. Their music videos are amazing and they sing just as well live so worth watching them.

@@CalebColesMusic They're a modern Mongolian rock band incorporating throat singing and traditional instruments. They've only been around for the last year or two but topped multiple charts around the world. I suppose their greatness is the band overall but the singing is definitely amazing.

I have watched so many reaction videos because this song tops any other as far as unexpected reactions are priceless. Some brought to tears, and as you stated, goosebumps for sure. I enjoyed yours because you explained it so clearly about the technique and how he obtains those sounds. I thoroughly enjoyed your video.

What a wonderful performance! I've never listened to David Draiman before. Will definitely be looking for more songs from him. Love the way you explained his techniques. I completely agree that how good the voice is isn't the most important part of singing any song. It has to be all about promoting the lyrics. If not, what's the point of singing? Some of the most popular singers have less than perfect voices, but they understand the nuances of the lyrics and combine vocal techniques with emotions to make you listen to the words and build that emotional connection we're all looking for in the music and the performance.

“Hello darkness, my old friend…” Everybody knows the iconic Simon & Garfunkel song, but do you know the amazing story behind the first line of The Sounds of Silence? It began 62 years ago, when Arthur “Art” Garfunkel, a Jewish kid from Queens, enrolled in Columbia University. During freshman orientation, Art met a student from Buffalo named Sandy Greenberg, and they immediately bonded over their shared passion for literature and music. Art and Sandy became roommates and best friends. With the idealism of youth, they promised to be there for each other no matter what.Soon after starting college, Sandy was struck by tragedy. His vision became blurry and although doctors diagnosed it as temporary conjunctivitis, the problem grew worse. Finally after seeing a specialist, Sandy received the devastating news that severe glaucoma was destroying his optic nerves. The young man with such a bright future would soon be completely blind.Sandy was devastated and fell into a deep depression. He gave up his dream of becoming a lawyer and moved back to Buffalo, where he worried about being a burden to his financially-struggling family. Consumed with shame and fear, Sandy cut off contact with his old friends, refusing to answer letters or return phone calls. Then suddenly, to Sandy’s shock, his buddy Art showed up at the front door. He was not going to allow his best friend to give up on life, so he bought a ticket and flew up to Buffalo unannounced. Art convinced Sandy to give college another go, and promised that he would be right by his side to make sure he didn’t fall - literally or figuratively.Art kept his promise, faithfully escorting Sandy around campus and effectively serving as his eyes. It was important to Art that even though Sandy had been plunged into a world of darkness, he should never feel alone. Art actually started calling himself “Darkness” to demonstrate his empathy with his friend. He’d say things like, “Darkness is going to read to you now.” Art organized his life around helping Sandy. One day, Art was guiding Sandy through crowded Grand Central Station when he suddenly said he had to go and left his friend alone and petrified. Sandy stumbled, bumped into people, and fell, cutting a gash in his shin. After a couple of hellish hours, Sandy finally got on the right subway train. After exiting the station at 116th street, Sandy bumped into someone who quickly apologized - and Sandy immediately recognized Art’s voice! Turned out his trusty friend had followed him the whole way home, making sure he was safe and giving him the priceless gift of independence. Sandy later said, “That moment was the spark that caused me to live a completely different life, without fear, without doubt. For that I am tremendously grateful to my friend.”Sandy graduated from Columbia and then earned graduate degrees at Harvard and Oxford. He married his high school sweetheart and became an extremely successful entrepreneur and philanthropist. While at Oxford, Sandy got a call from Art. This time Art was the one who needed help. He’d formed a folk rock duo with his high school pal Paul Simon, and they desperately needed $400 to record their first album. Sandy and his wife Sue had literally $404 in their bank account, but without hesitation Sandy gave his old friend what he needed.Art and Paul's first album was not a success, but one of the songs, The Sounds of Silence, became a #1 hit a year later. The opening line echoed the way Sandy always greeted Art. Simon & Garfunkel went on to become one of the most beloved musical acts in history. The two Columbia graduates, each of whom has added so much to the world in his own way, are still best friends. Art Garfunkel said that when he became friends with Sandy, “my real life emerged. I became a better guy in my own eyes, and began to see who I was - somebody who gives to a friend.” Sandy describes himself as “the luckiest man in the world.”Adapted from Sandy Greenberg’s memoir: “Hello Darkness, My Old Friend: How Daring Dreams and Unyielding Friendship Turned One Man’s Blindness into an Extraordinary Vision for Life."

There’s a whole Reddit page with people claiming it’s riddled with auto tune, I hear what parts they are pointing out. But I truly believe it’s the deep frequency of his voice that stutters like auto tune. I’m not a professional, but I’ve only seen like 2 professionals on UA-cam notice “possible” auto tune. 🤷🏼‍♂️ idk
