Billy Finlay it's quite debatable whether Avi or Mitch is better, since avi has great tone and support on his upper range while also having relaxed strong lows while Mitch has great manipulation of his tone on his belts, perfect mixing, an incredible falsetto and overall great control. They both have their strengths and some weaknesses such as for Avi, he doesn't have as good control on his upper range and might isn't terribly comfortable anywhere in the second octave
I have been asking myself the same thing. So far what I consider the great three are Hallelujah, Sounds of Silence, and Amazing race. All three have excep[tional affects on the listeners. So I ask myself: Whats the encore?
"Imagine" is the best opportunity to hear Kevin sing in Pentatonix; he has the lead in the last stanza, and he also hits the diva notes in the "wall of sound" right before that final stanza. Most of the time, he is busy beatboxing, but a few of their songs don't require a beat box, which frees him up to sing. "Can't Help Falling in Love" is an example of them singing intricate five part harmonies (no beatboxing), and so is their original composition "Run To You". A number of their Christmas songs have Kevin singing a line or two, where he can stop providing the beat for a moment. Kevin's range is interesting, as he can hit incredibly low notes as a beatboxer, and astonishingly high notes as a vocalist. As was noted by SorrowW0lf, there are many examples of Kevin singing on his own channel here on UA-cam; his specialty there is looping covers, where he plays cello, piano, and drums, and adds in his own beatboxing and vocals. It's quite impressive. FWIW, his last name is pronounced "oh LOO shoh la". Avi's first name is pronounced "AHH vee", with a broad a. The mezzo soprano is Kirstin Maldonado (Kirstin rhymes with Thurston, not Tristan) and the countertenor is Mitch Grassi, who can belt out some amazingly high notes (he regularly nails a G#5 in a number of their songs). You already know Scott, and after Avi's departure in 2017, Matt Sallee (suh LEE) stepped in as the bass. If you'd like to see some of Matt's bass work with the group, check out the covers of "Attention" or "New Rules x Are You That Somebody". Kirstin shines in "Say Something" and "Rather Be", and "Bohemian Rhapsody" is a Mitch Grassi tour de force. Nice reaction, and would like to see more Pentatonix reactions from you.

Just an interesting fact, when Avi is singing his verse Scott is doing the base part, you can hear the change but unfortunately you don’t see it in the video. I would recommend seeing them performing it live as you get to see Scott doing the baseline and how they arranged the switch
Deb Was wondering if he was going to pick up on those seamless transitions bt Scott & Avi singing bass lines. Another song “Standing By” LIVE comes to mind whereas Scott sings bass as Avi has solo.
I don't think he realized that Scott had picked up the bass line, but I bet if he had listened to this a few more times he'd have commented on it. It's clear he's very new to awareness of the group at this point.
@@GrimReaperNegi I agree, but Matt does bring quality vocals to PTX. It's just that we're so used to hearing Avi singing those parts that it seems strange. It'd be like listening to the Beatles, and they replaced John or Paul with Eric Clapton or Pete Townshend. Great at what they do, just wouldn't sound 'right'.

Went to Harvard med school, has studied abroad in multiple countries, fluent in multiple language, gorgeous AF. Kevin is the man every man wishes he could be.
Scott, Kirstin (soprano), and Mitch (counter-tenor) all grew up in Texas, and have known each other since they were young teens and before. Avi and Kevin joined them later, so they could compete on a TV talent show called "The Sing-off". They won, (some money and a recording contract). The contract was cancelled soon, so they decided to do UA-cam videos, and became so well known through YT, that they were offered another recording contract. They have the best selling Christmas album of all time, and several Grammys, and a HUGE fandom called the Pentaholics.
@@cjgreen8423 No, pambarab knows what she is talking about. Mitch is a Countertenor and you had probably never heard that term used before. So, I shall explain. I love how he started with no mention of Mitch. He heard a small amount and cut away. How could you do that???? "That's the power of a tenor." Oh yes! Brilliant!
You made a comment wondering how they could find this many singers of this caliber. This continues to blow my mind: Kirstie, Scott, and Mitch went to high school together. What are the odds of three such magnificent vocalists going to the same school at the same time? Astonishing!
Yeah, when I first heard them, it seemed like the planets had crossed a certain way to bring them together. Scott, Mitch (tenor) and Kirstie (girl) met as kids of 9 or 10 in Arlington, TX, in local musical theater productions. They performed as a trio in high school and decided to go on a TV a capella competition show called The Sing-Off, but realized they needed more voices. They saw Kevin in a YT video "cello-boxing", and a friend told Scott about Avi. They all met just 2 days before the audition for the show (!) and they ended up winning (!!!) With a lot of hard work, they have built a great playlist of music, both originals and covers, had 2 TV specials, and toured all over the world. A few other videos that show their individual skills and ability to arrange music are "PTX Evolution of Michael Jackson" and "PTX Daft Punk" for which they won their first of 3 Grammys. Also, check out "PTX Can't Sleep Love", a great original song. And if you really want to see Avi and Mitch blow the roof off, check out "PTX - Aha!, Singapore, The Star Vista" (a live performance). Love to see more reactions to those, or any suggested by others.
You're spot on. She's a Mezzo. Did you not notice when Avi took the lead, Scott seamlessly transitioned and took over the bass? Amazing. And how can you not love Mitch?
"JESUS! " yep, this is always my reaction to pentatonix :D and it's beautiful to see that a vocal coach gets so impressed by their harmony and extraordinary voices of ALL the members!
Should listen to either Pentatonix versions of Imagine and or Mary do you know. Both include Kevin singing. And if you really want to feel creatively inadequate, check out Kevin's solo performance of Down or Sign of the Times. He's mindblowingly talented. They all are really, including Matt who replaced Avi.
They are SUCH a talented group! There are a bunch of videos where they sing live too and they sound just as good or better live (I've seen them once, best concert ever), you won't be disappointed with a single performance haha.
Watch some of the other videos and you will hear Kevin's tenor voice... His beat boxing is so important to support the three part harmony of Scott, Kirstin, and Mitch, that he rarely participates as a tenor and he has a very good voice and it has improved markedly over the years. As someone else said, listen to Mary Did You Know.
You probably didn't realize that Scott takes over the bass part when Avi takes the melody. Go back and listen if you want your mind blown. Scott has a CRAZY range!
When you have seen more Pentatonix videos, you'll discover that Mitch has an incredible range. When the group was asked who was the "best" singer among them, the other four all turned and pointed at Mitch. Also, Kevin is a "beatboxer", which has become a standard inclusion in a capella groups. Understand, there are NO instruments recorded in "Hallelujah". Everything you hear that *sounds* like an instrument, drum, etc, is all being done by Kevin, using only his own body. He does also sing, has a beautiful voice, and plays cello as well. I also recommend "Mary Do You Know" to give you another view into the incredible range of Pentatonix. FIVE amazing singers.
it is unfair how talented these guys are. that tenor DAMN!! and the girl is the embodiment of beauty whilst having such an amazing voice. thanks god, what i got?
I asked the same thing " How did so many exceptional performers get together." ? I have listened to this many times and have learned to appreciate the percussion aspect of it very much.
I was fortunate enough to see Pentatonix live last summer. They are just as incredible in person. I think it was Kirsten that said she and Scott heard about the tv show "the sing off." The two of them wanted to audition so badly, but there was only two of them. SO they basically went shopping for singers on UA-cam. That's how they came together. Hurray for UA-cam!
at 7:38 and my body is covered in goosebumps, even my face and head tingle. Gah, Mitch's voice is angelic!!! They ALL are amazing 💞 edit: before that time stamp when he said so far we've got 3 great singers I thought to myself, wait until Mitch starts 😂
They are each very excellent talented and amazing singers with each one very strong in the vocal range each one sings. When Scott was just getting started I got to meet with him and do some of his early videos here in Nashville. I have kept up with the group since its beginning and sadly still many do not know who this group is. Myself, I feel very honor to have been around doing the early stages of this group developing and what them grown to the talented group they are today. Now they are doing more tours and bigger shows at major venues. They are a group which will continue to grow and become more know around the world.
Kevin smashes the beatboxing and Mitch just slays those high notes. Kirsten does not mess around and Scott has that smooth voice as if in a lullaby. They all smash it out very well. Congrats, guys!
Kevin is mainly the Beat Boxer. He does sing, but not often. Mitch Grassi the Tenor, has a 6 octave range, A1 to B7. Your reactions were great. You genuinely seemed surprised by their vocals. I am looking forward to more reactions to Pentatonix from you. Thanks again for the great video.
Several have mentioned that Kevin Olusola plays cello. He’s a world-class cellist. He’s come in second in competitions, where the musician who came in first was...Yo-Yo Ma. He also speaks fluent Mandarin Chinese. He studied for pre-med at Yale, and tells the story that he had to choose between Pentatonix (on the Sing-Off) or going to medical school. He’s also perfecting “cello boxing”: beatboxing with the cello. Since Matt Sallee joined the group in January 2018, he and Matt have developed a comedy routine, utilizing Matt’s bass and Kevin’s cello boxing. They do that routine in concert-I saw it. It was hilarious. Another leading acapella group is Home Free-they won the Sing-Off in 2014. (Pentatonix won in 2011). Home Free’s rendition of “How Great Thou Art” will make you cry. It showcases Tim Foust, who is a true basso profundo--(he actually had also trained Avi Kaplan as a basso profundo as well). The video was shot in the summer of 2016 when they were on tour in Europe, and was filmed with cameras mounted on drones, to show the sweeping landscapes of the Austrian Alps!)
Good suggestion. Also, the Home Free version of "Ring of Fire" also features Avi Kaplan, and really shows off his bass range. Avi and Tim from Home Free have similar ranges but different sounds, and both are awesome. For whatever reason, Home Free hasn't gained the following of Pentatonix, but they tour constantly and all of them have outstanding voices and harmonies. Last, I echo other comments to listen to "Aha" from the Pentatonix Singapore live concert at the Star Vista because it not only showcases Mitch's incredible singing, but also shows Avi's beautiful low range.
You have to watch so many of their videos. They are all amazing because they put themselves together to win a TV competition. They all had something to bring to the table. Scott, mitch and kirsty when to school together and picked up avi and Kevin for bass and a beat. To win the show and be amazing
I know nothing about music and CANNOT sing at all, but I do appreciate beautiful singing. I enjoyed gaining a greater depth of understanding through this video. Your enthusiasm is wonderful. Thank you.
Thank you for reacting! I'm sure you'll get a lot of requests now 😁 To hear Kevin's voice, definitely check out Imagine and Mary Did You Know. He also has his own channel where he sings.
Vocal coach:so far we've got three knock outs, what's coming next (Mitch's turn to sing) Me: knock outs, Yeah?, this one's gonna fling out the window 🤯 (that's how good he is)
5:05 'How did they get so many singers this good in one group??' Seriously, tho. The fact that three of them are childhood best friends and then they managed to find Avi and Kevin is mindblowing.
I don't know if you picked up on it, but when Avi is signing, the one doing the base line is Scott. Not only are they all incredible singers, but 3 of them came from the same high school in Texas and are childhood friends. It's hard to imagine so much talent in one tiny little place, at the same time. BTW, if you're interested in hearing Scott's range, control and nuance in one place, check out his cover of "I Should Tell Your Mama on You".
I have had classical voice training. Not as a voice coach, but certainly understand the nuances of using your instrument properly. This group has polished their gift to a level you just don't hear from the vocalists on the TV competition shows. I bet you the recording producers don't need to ask for a lot of retakes from these folks. They are a group that makes you put on your best headphones and close your eyes.
And their new bass (He also does baritone) Matt Sallee, does a verse on this and KNOCKS IT OUT OF THE PARK. Avi is happy and doing well on his own. I’m glad they’ve been able to continue with Matt. Their sound is slightly different (different singers and styles!); and Matt is SO positive and upbeat he’s also brought a new dynamic to the group!!
Kevin is never left out. He's one man who literally represents a whole band, whole orchestra. Others are like peaks of the mountain which reach out in this song and Kevin is like the mountain itself. He's a single man who literally becomes many the very moment he does, well, anything.

You're spot on. She's a Mezzo. Did you not notice when Avi took the lead, Scott seamlessly transitioned and took over the bass? Amazing. And how can you not love Mitch?
People discovering Pentatonix is my new obsession here on UA-cam :'D Great reaction, I hope you'll check out more of their songs!
Pentatonix is absolutely fantastic
💥Great reaction! More PENTATONIX!!💥
They are SUCH a talented group! There are a bunch of videos where they sing live too and they sound just as good or better live (I've seen them once, best concert ever), you won't be disappointed with a single performance haha.
Kevin doesn't sing much since he's busy holding the beat down but as others have pointed out he does feature on some songs and he's lovely. :-)
Exquisite. Singer Kevin is not only not given a highlight in the singing, the camera touches him fewer times than any of the others.
i could feel the collective sigh that all Kevin stans released when you said “maybe he’ll sing”
BEAUTIFUL. Leonard would be in tears!!!
Yes! More pentatonix PLEASE!!
I don’t even have the words to explain how much i love Pentatonix
You probably didn't realize that Scott takes over the bass part when Avi takes the melody. Go back and listen if you want your mind blown. Scott has a CRAZY range!
"Run to You " is one of my favorites by then their harmonies and progressions make time stand still and also makes you melt at the same time.
That's the power of tenor there! My smile never leave my face.
Yes,Carl John Franz thank you for reacting to this
it is unfair how talented these guys are. that tenor DAMN!! and the girl is the embodiment of beauty whilst having such an amazing voice. thanks god, what i got?
i love love love this!!!! what a great reaction! please watch more pentatonix
I asked the same thing " How did so many exceptional performers get together." ?
I have listened to this many times and have learned to appreciate the percussion aspect of it very much.
If you would like to hear Kevin Olusola (the one not heard other than his beatbox in this video) check out their video "Little Drummer Boy"
Shari omg! Yes!
This guys sings beautiful
Had the pleasure of seeing them live. I am such a fan and they are sooooooo gifted. ALL of them. What a gift to have them in one incredible package!
If you want to see the last guy sing, you should see their version of mary did you know
This song is absolutely amazing, discovered it couple years ago and i played this exact version of PTX on my moms funeral.
Wow, your reaction was so interesting. I really enjoyed it. Thank you! Please, do more Pentatonix if you can. Cheers!
Some of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard.
I'd love to see how he would react to Pentatonix singing Carol of the Bells.
They have been together since school. Beautiful singing
They're amazing!
They ALL are amazing 💞
edit: before that time stamp when he said so far we've got 3 great singers I thought to myself, wait until Mitch starts 😂
I love it when someone who's never heard Pentatonix hears them for the first time. I just sit back and wait for them to get blown away. :D
I miss Avi 😍 greetings from México!!🇲🇽
They are each very excellent talented and amazing singers with each one very strong in the vocal range each one sings. When Scott was just getting started I got to meet with him and do some of his early videos here in Nashville. I have kept up with the group since its beginning and sadly still many do not know who this group is. Myself, I feel very honor to have been around doing the early stages of this group developing and what them grown to the talented group they are today. Now they are doing more tours and bigger shows at major venues. They are a group which will continue to grow and become more know around the world.
they did Bohemian Rhapsody too, please react it!
Yes!!! It's so interesting.
And sound of silence!
I loved their Bohemian Rhapsody. Especially Mitch's "guitar" solo... Lol
“How did they get so many singers this good in one group” me every time I listen to them
Rise by Superfuit please❤️They have Scoot and Mitch there from Pentatonix. Love the reaction
YES!
Kevin smashes the beatboxing and Mitch just slays those high notes. Kirsten does not mess around and Scott has that smooth voice as if in a lullaby. They all smash it out very well. Congrats, guys!
Kevin has gotten very good vocally. He has some single covers. My favorite is KOver - Sign of the Times. It showcases all of his many talents.
If you wanna hear that one song watch “Mary did you know?” He sings in that one and its great!!
I would love to sing as good as any one of those gifted human beings. Bless you amen
Love Pentatonix!!
Pentatonix is amazing and I am glad to hear you think so too - hope to hear more about them from you.
Vocal coach:so far we've got three knock outs, what's coming next
(Mitch's turn to sing)
Me: knock outs, Yeah?, this one's gonna fling out the window 🤯 (that's how good he is)
5:05 'How did they get so many singers this good in one group??'
Seriously, tho. The fact that three of them are childhood best friends and then they managed to find Avi and Kevin is mindblowing.
You should react to Avi Kaplan "Change is on the Rise" you will be blown away
Yassss
sage and stone is BEAUTIFUL!!
Yeah I agree its a real supergroup of singers, they are so good.
I don't know if you picked up on it, but when Avi is signing, the one doing the base line is Scott. Not only are they all incredible singers, but 3 of them came from the same high school in Texas and are childhood friends. It's hard to imagine so much talent in one tiny little place, at the same time. BTW, if you're interested in hearing Scott's range, control and nuance in one place, check out his cover of "I Should Tell Your Mama on You".
he clearly doesn't sing during Avi's part
@@benwong3546 he's singing the bass line
Wasn't really low, the lowest note was an Eb2 and most tenors can reach around that
I think the video recording is still Avi singing the bass then, but when they did it live, Scott would sing it.
Yea I love the way they bring this song to life! First time I heard it it brought me to tears. They bring in the emotion and make it personal
5:07 If he says that now, I can't wait 'til he gets to Mitch's part
I have had classical voice training. Not as a voice coach, but certainly understand the nuances of using your instrument properly. This group has polished their gift to a level you just don't hear from the vocalists on the TV competition shows. I bet you the recording producers don't need to ask for a lot of retakes from these folks.
They are a group that makes you put on your best headphones and close your eyes.
please react to the aha (singapore vista performance) by them! you'll be shocked by mitch voice there ( he's the guy with the higher voice)!
Their 'Sound of Silence' is absolutely amazing as well
And their new bass (He also does baritone) Matt Sallee, does a verse on this and KNOCKS IT OUT OF THE PARK. Avi is happy and doing well on his own. I’m glad they’ve been able to continue with Matt. Their sound is slightly different (different singers and styles!); and Matt is SO positive and upbeat he’s also brought a new dynamic to the group!!
When Avi is singing his verse, it's actually Scott singing bass then. Just a fun fact
Yep. And Scott did that so perfectly but Avi's voice 😍😍
Beautiful. All of them. And the blend is magnificent.
their version of the sound of silence is well good that really shows how good they all are, have a listen to that if you haven't done so already.
I'm glad that you pick this particular song out of all their songs..this is truly a masterpiece..
Their daft punk mashup really shows the bass in avi's voice
Kevin does the “backing sounds” and is a human musical instrument! He does the beat so good!
