The Nissan 300ZX is one of the most beloved sports cars to come out of Japan. We didn’t get the Nissan Skyline GTR in the USA, but we did get the next best thing. A sleek, stylishing, twin turbo powered ringer packed with a ton of features that were ahead of its time. It was one of the first cars designed on a Supercomputer running CAD software! Not only were the looks advanced, under that pretty exterior it had the goods to back it up. With electronic 4 wheel steering, Variable Timing control (VTC), headlights that were the first of its kind, the Fairlady Z set the stage for the future of modern sports cars. Today we are going to look at Nissan’s flagship car in the States and some of the tech used in the Z that give it some current day character “flaws”
Huge thanks to everyone who submitted a video!

In your opinion what makes the Z32 300zx worth it?
the noises it makes can make a grown man cry
You have that douchebag look on your face😅😅
I grew up with two Twin turbo Zs, they are what brought me into cars, taught me how to drive stick and how to work on cars.
Personally i hate the headlights, They make the car ugly.
Broken plastic interior parts that you can't find.thats my favorite part of any 90s sports car.
When he said "Nissan, where did you go?", I felt that.
They should really get rid of Renault and jatco and be great agn
Ghosn f**ked up nissan. Hope they will recover to be as interesting as in the 90's (silvia, Z, GTR, pulsar)
Me too! It was like a reality slap
As soon as Ghosn is put in jail and Nissan gets a new CEO, I want to see a revival of the Pulsar GTI-R and Silvia.
This is So right. And it's sad.
FJ20 - no replacement
SR20 - no replacement
CA18 - no replacement
RB2x - no replacement
VQ35 - a somewhat failed design
VH45 - sadly did not make it in a coupe...
Alsow no nice coupes made anymore :(
No 180/200 silvias
No real Z-car (compared to the z32 all what came after was a disappointment)
Do you guys still remember the old slogan?
"Nissan - enjoy the ride“ that was the time of the old 240zx cars...
I've owned 3 Z32's. They are a pain to work on, and they are worth every minute of frustration 😃
saw this video and immideately started looking for your comment
True story. You truly put your blood, sweat and tears in it.
Awesome to see you here Greg! Totally agree, after I bought my Z, I realized how much I appreciated the simplicity of my Miata haha. It is definitely worth the time spent on them regardless.
PLEASE BUY ANOTHER ONE!
Agreed. I think I have paid more in storage fees over the years than my 96TT is worth. None the less it is fun, fast, and uncomplicated to drive. It is however complex and expensive to work on. I still like it though.
Thatprettyboyrugger True, you haven’t truly worked on your car until you have bled over it. Lol!
In 1993 I was a Nissan tech fresh out of high school when these cars came out and I fell in love the first time I saw one. I drove tons of the non-turbo 300 and they were pretty much better in every way as a daily driver but the Twin-Turbo Twin Intercooled versions had lots of growing pains and I remember them having lots of clutch issues with the TT cars. Tuning wasn’t as common as it is now so to find a modified one back then was unusual but I had a customer that had done fuel, intercooler, exhaust and turbo upgrades and a ‘chip’ that had to be soldered into the ecu to make it all work. He had a binder of receipts from a shop in Florida that did the build. He was a pilot and an adrenaline junkie and we struck up a friendship after a giggle-inducing high speed drive to demo a vibration that no one else was able to fix until I discovered a bad driveshaft carrier bushing/bearing assembly was the culprit and got the driveshaft replaced under factory warranty. After that, he would only bring the car to me for service or repair. He was always telling me how he could stomp on a new Vette or Mustang (I had a new 5.0 then) and he beat the absolute crap out of that car and was outrunning muscle cars and Gixers on the streets just about every weekend. We were pretty relaxed on warranty work in those days but I remember an adjuster denying a repair after he had smoked the rear end for the second time due to the abuse and modifications and after an investigation the VIN was entered into a ‘do not honor’ status on his warranty in the Nissan service database. He was loaded and had a best friend that was an attorney on speed dial so he got away with more than the average Joe and always had a riveting story to tell about some adventure he had gotten himself into in the car. The best story he had was spending the night in jail after being chased down racing a CBR in the Everglades by a highway patrol officer in a Pursuit Mustang and had the 184mph ticket in the service book to prove it! The case was thrown out when the officer ‘could not recollect’ if it was his 300zx or another 300zx so the judge had no choice but to drop the charges. 😎👍
Doubt he would stomp on GSXRs or CBRs.
Cool story nonetheless
Hell yeah
@@Berm_Blaster back then, yes. The 300ZXTT is an amazing car in many ways.
Lemme tell ya where the REAL PROBLEM is... 🤨
I've always wanted one of these since I was a teenager... I could still recall callin' up Nissan like 20+ years ago, and chewin' them out for discontinuing the 300ZX. The car was FANTASTIC, and NOTHING is wrong with it. I was hopin' they would mass-manufacture it make as as many of them as there were Corollas. Like a MILLION of these vehicles a year. They just coldly said to me, that the 350z will be 'replacing' it. I told 'em to just go straight to HELL. I shure gave 'em an EARFUL!!! 😡
I have a 92 ZX TT and absolutely love it and I'll tell you the problems:
The T bar leaks
The annoying clicking from the AC pod
Poor placement of seat adjustment lever
But for a car that is 20yrs old, it's simply a fantastic drive with stunning performance. Really easy to stick the back end out and control it.
Would you recommend for a 17 year old?
*30 years old
@ktlewis42 do you still have it
@@Isaacfrmdaa For a 17-year-old, your top priorities should be safety and reliability. You are young and dumb, so you need a car that you can beat on and crash several times and still walk away in one piece. My suggestion? Toyota Camry. Don't be stupid like I was as a teen, and buy more car than you can handle. Cause you *will* damage it from lack of maintenance, and you *will* smack it against curbs, poles, and random trees. If you ignore my advice and get something fast and/or nice, don't come crying to me when you eventually kill the car and/or yourself.
@Isaacfrmdaa if you can't fix it yourself when it breaks then you better have a healthy budget to pay a mechanic. Other then that I don't see why not. Other then teenagers don't usually have the discipline to run a performance car without wrecking it lol
I was a senior in high school when this car came out. I remember seeing them on the back of a car carrier being delivered for the first time. My friend and I were like what the fuk is that? It was the hottest car ever.
Ya I wish I could drive and I wish I went to school when you did I bet life was good back then
Same. And I said to myself “that’s why I have to have one”.
They are still amazing cars.
Me too. And had a hard on for one until I could buy mine in 94.
Pain to work on: yes
Regret the purchase: No
Happy to be an owner: indeed!
THIS
Yup i agree
What makes it a pain to work on? Just curious....
Dotseoem lack of engine space
Cant wait to buy one. Thinking of getting one from Arizona, and importing it to Canada. Maybe from Japan if I can find a clean one for a good price. I really want to SR swap one, and just get stock tt power with a way lighter front end
The most timeless car body of all time. It still looks amazing and modern TO THIS DAY. Absolutely legendary.
Nope. That title belongs to the F50.
Oh god, no. I was coming here to say the problem was that when it came out, it started looking old and dated less than a year after it was released. I can't think of another car that managed this. The design was the exact opposite of timeless, it's time was about 6 months, then it expired. This was a topic of conversation among friends, everybody liked the way it looked when it came out, 2 years later, nobody did. It's sales died because of the styling, not despite it. Their sales went from 22K the first year it was out, to 15K year two, less than 10K each of the next two years, then less than 5K for per year.
You may like it for it's "retro" styling now, but its looks aged like milk in the 90s. The new Z, to me at least, is exactly the same, first few pictures were cool, but as time passes and the more I see it, it just doesn't look that good anymore, and they haven't even started making it yet. I'd expect the same sales path.
@@basshead. Well in the supercar class lol
nah e36 lol
@@12thtime maybe in you're opinion, back in the 90s most cars were still boxes, z32 looked like a ferrari to average non car people and won most top 10 best looking cars in many magazines during its entire sales period and when the 350z came out most people preferred the old design. Even Lamborghini uses the headlights. You're probably thinking of a wetherd 2+2, they can look like s***
I've owned several Z32s, still have 2 of them. One is basically stock, the other heavily tuned and modified. Absolutely love them.

When i was like 10 (in the year 2000) a neighbor had 1 of these cars under a tarp and occasionally work on it. Everytime he worked on it id ask him what he was doing and he would always say "im building a race car buddy" id ask him if his car was fast and he said "itll be fast". So the years passed and sadly my family and i moved away and i never saw the car finished. Everytime i see a 300zx it reminds me of the guy and his race car.
Thats sad 😢😢😢😢 hope you see him someday
Legend has it that your old neighbor is still working on it and eventually will become a race car.
@@babblingidiot7903 maybe an ultimate sleeper
That guy will just fly in one day, crashing through a nearby garbage can in his 300ZX and just call out to you and your wife suddenly "Omar! You gotta come back with me!" so you respond "Where??" and he just says "Back to the future!"
Turns out his "race car" goes so fast it can break the 4th Dimensional Borderline and pass into some kind of hyper-spatial travel, allowing traversal of the 4th Dimension and with the capability to return back through a past or future borderline.

I started car sales for a Nissan dealer the year they released this Z. I remember working a Car Show and the Ferrari sales men coming over to look in astonishment!
I sat in one at a San Francisco car show and it was the most amazing experience for a teen. It looked out of this world and every curve was simply breathtaking.
They are beautiful cars. 350s and 370s can't compare visually.
[STORY TIME] Thank you for this video. I grew up a poor immigrant kid in southern Ontario, Canada in the 90s, but in my neighborhood, a friend’s dad had a spotless 300ZX in red w/the all black interior. I think it was the first time I actually got to touch/sit in a wedge-shaped sports car. It was such a special sight. Nobody in my complex was jealous or hateful, even another neighbor who had a Taurus SHO would compliment the Nissan. We were all just happy to see it every time it drove by, knowing it is something unique in our little pocket of town, in a sea of Neons, Jettas and Cavaliers. As an adult, every time I see one, I’m in time-machine mode. Sorry for the lengthy post, and shout out to everyone with childhood memories of cool cars!!😊
Great story friend, don't worry, you weren't the only kid to have that kind of childhood. Really appreciate you to share your story with us!

I love the car timeless design. Still looking to own one in the future, not to track it, but to enjoy it and drive it daily.

I’ve had mine going on 2 years now and she’s been a dream to own! I’ve known since day 1 that I’ll never get rid of her no matter what happens!
I've gone thru hurricane disaster. Lost everything twice. Owned my Z during those times for 12 years and guess what... it didn't take my car and despite all the hard money times I'll never sell it.
I've had mine for 14 and I can second this!!!!
nismoskylinegtrv same here. Had mine for 13 years now. It’s a garage queen.
"Nissan, where did you go?" a sad but accurate question!
That and Mitsubishi! What the hell happened?
Nissan and Mitsubishi should’ve never listen to Renault. NEVER. EVER. Collaborate with the French when it comes to cars. Vans yes BUT NEVER CARS, EVER. Citroen screwed over Maserati when the cash-strapped Italian firm needed assistance. Citroen saved them but the cars were terrible and the BiTurbo damaged their reputation. Renault milked Nissan and Mitsubishi and with the exception of GTR and 350/70Z made the most boring AF cars ever to exist, and dangerous electrics.
@@fortitudevalance8424 The FRENCH are good at food, they should stick to that! The only thing that they did well was the rear passenger side window on the cube,I thought that was clever.
I love these deep-dives on all things automotive, please keep doing these, my guy.
I had a Z32, and it is still one of my favorite cars. I am a mechanic by trade and hobby and honestly, the VG30DETT is still one of my favorite engines as well. It is a monster. Little mods make damn good power. It sounds amazing. I loved that car so much. Though I could do without its meh 4 wheel steering system. It was pretty useless in the range it operated.
I had a Z32 300zx as my first car that I bought for my self and drove by choice. As a broke 18 year old, with minimal car knowledge, it was real tough to afford to keep it on the road. In the time I owned it, I learned alot, and much more since then.
Hopefully sometime in the near future, I would like to get another one, and be able to take much better care of it. I loved the car, and the quirks give it character.
@anonymous I thoroughly enjoy my early 70's 351 Cleveland powered Mach One. SIMPLE as f***, rides nice, looks evil, takes very well to upgrades. When she's sitting next to another car (pick one) the other car is invisible.

So when I was young and kept saying how the Nissan looked like a Lambo or Ferrari, I should have been saying how Lambo looked like Nissan.
They "borrowed" Nissan lights!
I always thought the 300ZX looked like a Bugatti 110EB
The Mitsubishi GTO looked like a Ferrari! This Nissan looked like a Bugatti!
Looks nothing like any lambo. Mayby Bugatti
I got EB110 vibes from those lights!
The 300ZX TT was a force to be reckoned with when it debuted. By 1994 it was noticeably slower in a straight line than the Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 and Toyota Supra TT but was more fun to dive than either. I had a 1991 300ZX Twin Turbo and a 1998 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 back in the early 2000s. Driven back to back it's obvious the Mitsubishi is the faster car, at the track I ran 13.7-14.0@99-102mph in the Z and in the VR-4 I ran 13.3-13.5@101-103mph.
Despite being a bit slower, the Z was still the most versatile and fun to drive. I daily drove the VR-4 due to its AWD and took the Z when it was nice out.
I had a 300zx back in the day. The thing I miss the most is being able to close the gas tank door from the driver seat. Idk why that's what I remember it for.
I didnt even know people disliked the 300zx, it's incredible.

I owned a 92 when I was 18 and I can tell you I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I sunk at least 6k into that beast, ,just trying to get it driving well, and I loved it so much. It was the biggest stress factor in my life for years but I just couldn't give it up. I recently got rid of it, it had been sitting for 10years at my grandpa's house, a monument to my failure. One day I'm going to find another one and tackle it with my fully formed slightly-less-stoned adult mind.
I owned a 300 ZX twin turbo, and loved it. It was the best car I've ever owned. I've owned other sports cars including a couple Porsches, and the 300ZX was the most reliable and most fun in 45 years of driving. I put over a 100K miles on it, and all I ever needed to do was regular maintenance, except perhaps replacing the rear Z-rated tire$ about twice a year.

When you get a 300zx just expect all the cool tech to be broken.
Not entirely true. I agree that most of the Z32's were bought up by a younger demographic that didn't maintain them, abused them, and tastelessly modded them. However, properly maintained Z32's still have all the great tech that works. My '90 NA, which was one of the first ones sold in Ohio, is pristine and everything works 100%; even the original digital clock which is known to stop working. The engine runs strong, VTC still works, all electronics still function, T-tops don't leak, and hell even the driver's side key hole still illuminates green. Power seats and mirrors still operate. It's as solid as it was 30 years ago but not without proper maintenance. I'll never sell her and in fact she may get a TT sister if I find one in similar condition.

@@lordofkeebs8424 Not True. You just need to know where to look. There are a few shops around the country that continue to support these cars and make them wicked fast. Put on your surfing goggles and you'll be able to find them on the internet. Hint... Z Car Garage in San Jose is just one.
The headlights are what made me fall in love with the 300ZX
I got a z31 I like those headlights too lol
It was the ass end of the z32 for me. The front looked awkward but with a lot of potential to look great
They're what made me not like it sadly

I would’ve loved another video like this going over the unique parts of the 31z to. I’ll be buying myself a T-top 31z chasis soon to restore and love them so much
I’ve had my Z32 for almost 9 daily-driven years now... it’s a love/hate relationship but I don’t think I’ll ever sell it.
If you have the patience to deal with the engines electrical quirks, especially the injectors and ignition wiring - it’s worth owning.
Concept Z Performance has been a lifesaver in terms of parts both OEM and aftermarket.
nissan: is called VTC!!!
Honda: hold my beer...
I knew someone would catch it vtc is vetc for Nissan just like vanos for BMW or vvti on a Toyota just different ways to get to the same result
@@fullweezy3553, actually VTC and VTEC are fundamentally different in what they do.
VTC and VANOS change the phase angle of the cam, but does nothing for lift profile (lift height and duration) . VTEC switches to a different cam with optimized lift profile and timing.

I owned a 300zx tt (fairlady z) when I lived in Japan and I adored it. I love the smoothness of the engine, the almost cockpit layout of the driver seat, the t tops, the right hand drive........ damn I miss that car
My best buddy and next door neighbor had the Fairlady Z. It was his mid life crisis buy. He loved it. It was beautiful. Only one problem.. we live in Wisconsin. One flake of snow on the ground and he couldn’t get to work. If it snowed during the day... when he managed to fishtail his way home... the neighborhood would watch with consternation as he spent 5 minutes trying to get up his 15 foot long driveway with a slight grade. His teenage sons behind him pushing him up the drive. Needless to say... by Spring... the car was gone. Thanks for the laughs and memories Brad.
I had a 90 300 ZX in the early 2000's and I never had an issue with it. To this day, it's still one of my favorites.
Same. My first car was a 1990 300zx. I still miss it to this day and it’s been 14 years since I sold it
I got a 91 300zx when I was 19 years old. Loved that thing to death and it got me into working on cars (talk about hit the ground running). It was NA 2+2 but it was still the biggest pain in the ass. Made it to 230k on the original engine before getting killed by an old lady who wasn't paying attention and rear ended me. Miss that car so much, loved everything about it from the T tops to the surprisingly spacious hatchback. Miss my Z, but I don't think I could ever get another. Best PITA ever.
I bought a 280ZX in high school and 18 years later, I still have that car. The ownership experience with these cars is defined by the Z community. People are absolutely wild about their Z's. That makes it so there are forums, online groups, write ups about almost anything you can think of to do with every generation from basic repairs to full-on screamers. It's an awesome community. Other cars have come and gone, but I could never part with the Z.
I did, don`t do it.
The only thing that killed the 300ZX was time
Cause time never stops

I’ve owned two Z32’s. One of my favorite cars of all time. They still look so good today. I miss having one :(
They're very affordable, especially now. Look into it, bruh.
I'm seeing ones more often where I live completely restored.
WarpPal same my coworker has one and I’m literally looking into buying one now. It’s so nice!
Friend owned one but such a pain in ass to work on
Same I miss mine to, never should have sold it
Had two Z32 over the years. Still have one. Great car. Handles well and has timeless styling. Definitely challenging to work on sometimes. Cramped bay! Only other car that was a bigger pita to work on was the VR4 I had.
I have been attempting to get a clean Z32 TT for about a decade... they are legit like finding bigfoot, all of the good ones are not for sale (can't blame the owners), and the ones that are for sale are either abused or parts cars, or astronomically priced. Seriously congrats to those who keep up to their Z32's they are beautiful works of art.
Or....automatics
300 zx: suffering from success

First time here and before the first minute I subbed & Liked hella good content! About to by my 3rd 300zx tt!

Delete this now!!!!
Im saving up for one of these, don't raise the prices ffs!!!!
This is me everytime i see a 300zx video from donut and others
Same man, if they do a high low video on this car like someone suggested id just be dead
Alexander Walker yess raise the value lol wanna get some good $$$ outve my beloved Z32
Let all the fair weather fanboys buy em up and sort em out, then when the fad dies you may have a good chance at getting a sorted Z for a good price. I’ve noticed this trend with music gear that is collectible but not rare anyway
The prices were already being raised as we speak glad I bought mine
I have a 300zx 2+2 and I'm swapping in the TT engine. You'd be amazed at the amount of stuff packed into the engine bay. Blows my mind every day. Definitely a pain to work on but it will more than make up for it once its done.
yea that's what made it so tough
What engine are you going with? Check out my build.
Let me know how that goes because I’d love to do it with mine it, just seems wicked expensive!
I also have a 2+2, just picked up a JDM TT engine and transmission with ecu and other various things attached to the engine for $3400, has approximately 68,000 miles
@@RedJerk5 it's all fun and games until you get your new engine and everything is basically trashed. Have to get new turbos, fuel injectors, EFI harness, clutch, about 1000 hoses, and much more. Trying to keep the swap under 10k but after everything I just mentioned, including the engine and trans, I'm at 7500...so far
My first car was a z32 na. Went through that car with a fine comb. Re-wired every plug and rebuilt almost everything on it. It was the most reliable car I've had. I ended up trading it and got a 95 M3. Fast forward a few years I bought another Z. A 92 TT. Pulled the engine and slowly working through it all over again. If I could I would own hundreds of Zs I love these cars!!
Always wanted to own one. Closest thing I'll ever get to a mk4 supra
Honda when sees camshaft timing description: "one does not consider fun when making variable camshafts, but this does put a smile on my face."
"Is it still a pain in the butt to work on?" Yes, compared to modern technology and diagnostics tools it can be tricky. After owning several Z32s since 2013 I can say there is something great about when everything is working as it should. Being patience and willing to learn its quirks is key. Blasting down the street in one of these is priceless.
regular oil changes would be the first thing you learn, seeing its timed by clean oil...still cant beat a pushrod,,cheap, easy to work on,last forever.i learnt this after owning a twin cam,all ways in the garage,,i fixed it..not a mechanic..then,bought a v8,easier put fuel in tank & drive EVERY DAY , than under the hood on w/ends..fuk that..you let that zx sit for 30 yrs,,its trash,,you let a pushrod sit for 30 yrs,,it runs..when the zx came to aus,,they looked like a knock off of the pontiac firebird.same shape..as a note,i have a 1962 f100 4x4,,352FE,,still runs,...see your zx in 60 yrs,..

what caused you to get rid of them? I’m considering getting one
I just bought a Z31 a couple months back and I'm still super excited about it, love driving it even though it's overdue for a good bit of TLC
I have a 1991 300zx TT that I bought in 2007. I was tired of dealing with the old tech and issues, so I did the forbidden LS swap. It's now a 1100whp, ethanol burning, 6.2l, LS3 with rear mounted twin turbos, making around 1300hp crank. To my knowledge, it's the most powerful LS swapped street legal Z32 in Zword, as of 04/2020.
Some history: I bought a 1990 Z32 NA back in 2001. I always loved the way these cars looks. The timing belt broke, and the engine had to be replaced. I then bought a 1991 Z32 TT in 2007. It was already moded, and made 550whp. It was a fun car until the gaskets started to go, along with many other problems over the year, but hey, it's an old car. I decided to do a swap, and decided on the LS3. The LS3 aluminum block is nearly 200lbs lighter than the VG30DETT, and takes up less room in the bay. This means you can work on the engine, and not have to remove it every time something goes wrong. Hit me up on social media ( XTZTwinTurbo ) and check out the vids and pics. #XTZTwinTurbo
XTZTwinTurbo my favorite 300zx to this date, my dream build, and one day hope to have a build similar🤘🏼

The 300ZX is still one of my all-time favorite cars.

Yes it kinda looks like the eb110
I love the look of them. A clean, well built 300ZX is one of the sexiest cars ever, bar none.
These do look way ahead of their time!!! I remember seeing them back then, really blew me away wondering what they were as a kid.
I miss my 300zx... But I always tell myself that it went to a good home and the guy that bought it from me is a known Nissan fanatic. 11 years later and he still has it and I still see the Z around town.
After working on these car for the past 9 years I still have learned so much from this video! Your channel and content rocks!! Thank you for the chance to showcase my two Z's.
Beautiful cars man, congrats!
🤣 Nissan was like "let us think hard and design this 4 cam TT for the ZX
owners 30 years later- " scrap the VG V6 find me a LS"
I wonder, why an LS and not a VQ?
I meet more than plenty of guys and gals who stick with the vg. But they and myself are the type of people who put nissan in nissan, chevy in chevy, ford in ford, etc. All comes down to preference and if you wanna jump through hoops to get those baby turbos tucked way down there.
If you want an LS go buy a Vette
Eh, No.
That is basicly a US thing only.
Nissan even dropped the basic engines for their coupes and swapped in the ka24 Traktor engine... Just to make it simple enough to get it serviced reliable in the US...
I guess it's cause most American engine builders have no experience working on more complex engines. Why should they, LS (and other pushrod v8) engines are dirt cheap in the US and basicly everyone understands them and knows how to work on them.
They are way simpler in design compared to more modern engines (like mid 80s🤣) they are however not without their own problems....
Love this video!
I love the type of B2B nerdy nerdy stuff. Thanks for the effort!
this just made me want a 300zx even more
