Notoriously overbuilt, a lot of tuners get a LPG green top (na), change the valve springs and don't even gap the piston rings.
I’m a v8 guy and I haven’t owned a 4 or 6 cylinder motor in over 20 years. I have 4 cars 3 of them are v8’s. But all 4 are Cadillacs. I just bought a ats with the 2.0t. I want to take mine to 400 whp and run e85 as well.
Maybe so, but it probably only made that power once before it blew. Stock LS engines just will not hold that power. You need a built bottom end, damn good gas, and a great tune.
@@WastdTrashPanda well it didn't. Although I butchered some details in my original comment. It was a Colorado with junkyard 6.0 that clocked 250K miles before being boosted by Sloppy Mechanics to 1000+ rwhp and even raced to 9.78 at 143 mph in 1/4 mile.
I have the ls on my truck and I've been dailying it, modified, for over 30k miles w in the zero issues at all. It's not stupidly built but it'll throw down all day long. I've raced it plenty of times and never had issues. It also pushes my truck down the strip or street faster than my friend with a modded 2jz lexus. Both are effing great motors. Both are easy to work on. The lexus is sitting at 230k miles, my truck is sitting 168k miles, but I just got rid of another ls truck with over 300k on it and still working good.
Two totally different sounding motors. But a boosted LS means business. A 2JZ is no slouch. But, in all honest. Sound and flex aside. A booster LS is the way to go in America. More power capability’s, shockingly more reliable cheaper to mod and more access to parts.
Opinion. What do you mean by booster? Supercharger? Turbo? I do agree to more access to parts here in America. But a good supercharger or turbo charger you're looking at at least 8k to add on.
I respect both - they're awesome engines. My 1JZ-VVTi is putting out 550rwhp very smoothly, with response and reliability. Can't deny the LS engines are awesome though. I wouldn't say no to an LS3 with some mods.

Talks about engine swaps, and they completely gloss over trucks and powerbands. You aren't going to see much low RPM torque from a JZ, especially when you look at LS crawler builds.
Even when he kinda cringes whilst saying a 3 speed auto from the 60s could possibly work behind an LS. Of course it could, probably 50% of the genuinely fast cars I've seen in my life have been running either glides or turbo 400s.. It's like he doesn't know cars above 350rwhp actually exist.
Anyone else get the vibe at the beginning of these shows that he already has picked his favorite and is trying to sell us on it instead of just presenting the information?
Just started watching and if JZ wins I’m never watching Versus again. Already disappointed me by picking the mustang over the Camaro. James you’re still the man, and will watch everything else.
The Mustang over the Camaro was a no brainer. Don't get me wrong, I love the GM F-Body platform and have owned a 2nd gen Firebird, 3rd gen Camaro, and 4th gen Trans Am, but the Mustang is just something else that has transformed the auto industry in ways the Camaro never could.
the mustang is a more reliable car by far. all mods aside, the rest of the car will outlast gm every time. back in the day? just a difference of preference only.
Fun fact. The small block 350 was literally the LS1 before the LS1. The only thing they changed is the mapping for the block cast for better flow. That's it. And immediately picked up 20% more power and torque
Not quite. The 350s where iron blocks, less efficient heads, some lower and some higher compression. The ls1 is technically 346 cubes. And a third gen small block.
The small block 350 closest cousin from another mother is the 305 L69 HO out of the Monte SS. You can turn one into the 350 with a little effort by putting the head of the 350 to the 305 block with a little mod.

i love both these engines for everything they can do, and they are both good looking under the hoods of whatever they are put in but one thing for sure is taking that 4cyl out and looking at that beautiful v8 plenum or a fat supercharger is something else. as for the 2jz goes having an engine bay big enough and seeing that massive snail they call a turbo is also just as beautiful. with all that said just do both and have best of both worlds
This was much less impartial than the others, good on ya donut. Tho I feel the 2j is just as good tho I am a GM boy! It's all about application right ?
Yeah I agree this vid was alot better. But yeah I'm thinking the users preference plays a big part since both the pros and cons of each engine kinda cancel the other out lol
I’ll reiterate as I have in other videos. Whether you agree or not, just appreciate the information. We should expect subjectivity as it’s a subjective subject.
Weight distribution is one factor you forgot to mention. Depending on what you want to do the LS is going to provide a better weight distribution by being shorter and being able to sit further back.
I LOVE THE 2JZ , But you forgot to talk about other points on the ls for example that ls engines have better throttle response because it was made to be an NA engine and it can spool turbos faster duo to bigger displacement , as a JDM car guy i just know the LS wins in all aspects except TOP TOP POWER but most of us dont even need more then 600 650 if you drift or 200 to 550 if you serious do circuit racing and track days , maybe on drag days it would be a more of a competition BUT the 2JZ and LS are nowadays FAR FAR from being the TOP horsepower engines , LOOK at the twin turbo lambos the modded R35 the turbo vipers the ford barras even heard of 1500hp coyote engine the king of top horsepower is always changing , so when it comes to actual performance like throttle response weight availability it seems the LS WON its a really cool and good engine , but for real most of this war i just hyped 12 yo on engines ( there is so much more in a car then just an engine)
I know it's cheating because it means swapping the block and crank, but I lust after one of those JZ based V12s. I remember seeing one like ten years ago that used a 90° billet aluminum block and forged steel crankshaft with factory heads, pistons, and connecting rods that weighed about the same as the factory iron block engines. It was obviously wider than a stock JZ and probably can't handle as much boost, but if you could get it to fit, the exhaust note was magical. I personally want to build one based on the single turbo 1JZ-GTE (possibly with FSE direct injection heads) to make a 5.0 liter twin turbo V12. I just don't have the money, or a suitable car to put it in.🤣😭
What do you think is better than an LS? Taking into account, cost, aftermarket support, availability, easy of maintenance and modification, hp to engine weight, hp to size (I.e. ability to swap in diverse engine bays), and just the raw ability to make considerable power mostly stock with a simple cam and spring swap. Heck a 4.8 will make 320 rwhp with a cam and spring swap.
I'm a Ford guy and love the Coyote 5.0 but you gotta give credit where credit is due... The LS is fucking badass. Anyone can make something more complicated, a real genius makes something simple. The simplicity (and numbers) of the LS in my opinion make it the superior motor for all but the people running high boost.
@@suprastevio2264 as of now I want to have a Vaydor G35(which is a kit car for the Infiniti G35) and swap either a 2JZ or a LS in it. I'm just 14 rn so ig I have a long way to go. I just love the sound of the 2JZ but yeah the LS route should be cheaper
14:33 aren’t any vvti JZ engines interference engines? (at least for the GE ones as far as i know) so any non interference applications would have to be without variable valve timing
So many people don't know that the 2JZ-GE is a steal. The bottom end is very similar, change the pistons to adjust the compression. The head is the big difference between the two. If you are swapping the engine management, turbo, intercoolers, etc then there's no real reason to bother with a GTE. I've build a GE (block, head, intakes, exhaust, pans, harness) I got from someone doing a swap for $150.
2jzge vvti is has the same strength block (without oil squirters) same crank (different bearings) but it has weaker rods and pistons and has a “higher flowing” head

the LS wins in all aspects except TOP TOP POWER but most of us dont even need more then 600 650 if you drift or 200 to 550 if you serious do circuit racing and track days , maybe on drag days it would be a more of a competition
BUT the 2JZ and LS are nowadays FAR FAR from being the TOP horsepower engines , LOOK at the twin turbo lambos the modded R35 the turbo vipers the ford barras even heard of 1500hp coyote engine the king of top horsepower is always changing , so when it comes to actual performance like throttle response weight availability it seems the LS WON its a really cool and good engine , but for real most of this war i just hyped 12 yo on engines ( there is so much more in a car then just an engine)
