I was a Nissan tech in the 90’s and I had one customer that had done a ton of mods to his 300zxtt and voided the warranty before it had the first 100 miles on it. It was, at the time, the fastest car I had ever driven and I loved working on it. He street raced it regularly and came in one day with a ticket he got from Florida Highway Patrol in the Everglades racing a Ninja and had been clocked at 168mph and somehow talked (or paid) his way out of going to jail and his car being impounded. I always loved how the cockpit wrapped around you and had a more refined chassis than the completion and had some cool gizmos such as the Super-HICAS that would give a certain amount of rear steer to help in the corners. Very nice restoration and build.
I also have a 300zx, owned for 3 years so far, and have 0 desire to sell it anytime soon. I've fallen in love with the car. In Aus like this example in the vid, eventually pushing lots of power is a goal of mine.
We dont see much of these 300ZX cars in my city. They are like non existant. We see more of the 350 and 370's that these kids have taken and cambered the shit out of them
Let's keep it that way, some might think it's too expensive, but compare its price to a mkiv supra, fd3s rx7, or acura/honda nsx and it seems reasonable
My recollection from back then is that the Z was praised immensely in its day, especially in the early years. It was forgotten in the early 2000's. But when it came out, it was routinely one of the top cars from most magazines, had instant appeal, and was in my opinion from back then having driven all the of them certainly one of the best.
I love how they look. I'm old, I remember when they were new. They were full of tech, very advanced for it's day, which is also it's downfall. 30 years later they are cheap because half the stuff doesn't work and they often need more maintenance than they are realistically worth. So in that sense they are very "german". You never want a cheap 300ZX, you want one that has been taken care of by an enthusiast. You don't buy the clapped out ones. I compare these to a BMW 8 series. Fantastic cars, but the BMW crowd dont really care about them. Most can appreciate how they look and think they are cool, but you wouldn't wanna own one. They are often a pain in the ass to work on and theres always small issues. The same goes for this and Nissan fans.
Early 2000’s is when skylines started being imported in numbers these were still bringing decent money at the time a gtst were 15-30k depending on year model at the multiple import dealers everywhere at the time gtr’s were more obviously and the 200sx were 45k straight off the showroom floor these were hated by mechanics at the time who were used to things like falcons and commodores which are basic and roomy to work on the skylines and Silvia’s gave them what they knew the zx was more difficult to work on and diagnose and was seen as more of an old man’s car
Videos description is patently untrue. The 300ZX was the highest selling Japanese sports car in America (the world's largest car market) for multiple years in a row. Partly because it won a Le Mans 24 Hour Race, a feat no other car in your list has achieved. It also still holds to this day the land speed record for a 6 cylinder turbocharged car. It has a bad reputation in Australia because nobody really knew how to work on them properly, which probably colors your perception of it. But in terms of global sales, it far outpaced other marques. And remained in production longer as well.
Yep, killer car o/s. Most where TT, leather seats, climate control, power every thing ... Nissan Australia screwed us by only bringing the 2+2 NA in "poverty pack" form and charging a whopping $80K+ for it 30 years ago! Luckily, the TT "grey" imports saved this car's reputation in Oz.
This is the car I've always wanted since the first time I've known of it's exinstence. I've never owned anything but Honda's except for a Jetta when I needed a car yesterday. I've always wanted a 300ZX though before I fell in love with Honda's. The 300ZX is still my UNICORN
I wanted one since 1998 my brother in law at the time had a Honda EX 1995. He said 300zx just makes ALOT of noise for not really going anywhere. Basically like it's working really hard and barely getting speed for the work. For me even if that was true, I'd still want one. Think they look amazing even still in 2024. Was looking at a police interceptor but they're at 6 grand min now days. Figured put that towards one of these instead 🔥
I feel like one of the most criminally underrated characteristics of this car is the sound. The VG30 may be large and comes with too many unnecessary features from factory, but god damn they sound so good.
LOL! The serious face when you were in high boost pushing through the gears, normally you are giggling! What a beauty that Z is, paint, style, looks, thanks for the reminder about this JDM gem we all kinda forgot about.
This video brought back so many good memories for me. The Z32 is timeless and so easy to drive. Not many people get to experience driving them. Great review and video. Keep up the good work.
The Z32 has a timeless body style that is still relevant today. I really enjoy how much attention mine gets at the drag strip by guys with the typical muscle cars. It helps I ditched the V6 for a V8 though.
Dude clay, you have the best camera angles during showcasing I swear. Such good production. Always covering the OG cars that make JDM.. JDM! Keep it up boi!
The 300zx is one of my favorite vehicles of all time, had the privilege of owning a red 92 300zx TT! This car is unbelievable! Thanks for posting the video!
I've owned a number of cars and collect Z; a slightly worked 240, 260, 280 but my 300 Z32, even in AusSpec NA with Nistune and exhaust upgrade, is by far my most favorite car, ever - PERIOD
Firstly I have to say all of the cars owned by this pebble dude especially this 300zx are amazing machines with the work done to them another thing is I was born in 1984 and as a kid growing up when I first saw this model z32 up till now I see it as a timeless design decades ahead of it's time with the car's whole detail it just never gets old.To be honest none of the other z cars looks special as this model even the new z400 detail looks older than this model's design 🙂
Clay i couldn't agree more the 300zx is so underrated which i don't get. I owned a drop top back in late 90's back then it was head turner and awesome car. I'm looking at buying a few 2 +2 and coupe twin turbo.
When I was 16-20ish my buddy had a 91 tt 300z with intake/full exhaust and a tune and I had a full bolt-on, big turbo 1g awd dsm. We had so much fun with them. Good times First time we raced (his first ever race and first time getting on it in a manual) he was shifting around 3500rpm, he didn't know you could let it Rev higher lol
Total badass of a car when it came out but hella expensive! I knew of a few owners of these cars and the cramped spaces were extremely difficult to work on. A long warranty would help somewhat.
I had a 300ZX (NA unfortunately) many years ago. It was fairly modified, and after I sold it back in the early 2000's, i often looked back at it as one of the cars I wouldn't want to own again as I believed the design didn't age well. However, this video changed my mind. When done right, with a really beefy, aggressive wheel fitment and the right aero kit, this thing looks amazing. Well done!
I agree with you. Even though I prefer the Z32 stock look over other super JDMs of the time, I still think the right body modifications make a huge difference
I wasn't into cars until a friend of mine inundated me at work with videos. Eventually he showed me this one, and seeing this 300ZX has permanently altered my brain chemistry.
