The only reason MR2s and Fieros had some issues with snap oversteer is one bad drivers and two being most of the engines weight was on top of the axle rather than in front of it like a longitudinal configuration would have been. 11:13 The weights' inertia creates a force which opposes your rotation (F) This force (F) in turn creates an opposing momentum, or torque (M) This opposing torque (M) is determined by multiplying the force (F) by the distance from you to the weights, or radius (r). The bigger the radius, the bigger the opposing torque, the harder it is for you to spin freely. Pull the weights in and you gain speed.

Hellcat: $59k starting, 6.29 lb/hp, 3.4 s 0-60 C8: $59k starting, 7.2 lb/hp, 3.0 s 0-60 Front placed engines do not decrease power to the back wheels, but it is much more challenging to put down said power.

Friend of mine in high sch had a Corvair for a short time. When he drove me home one day my dad saw it and was pretty impressed to see one in such good shape. It only had lap belts so with my buddy's driving, it could be a nervous ride sometimes!
Keep in mind, modern front engine, front wheel drive cars use Dante Giacosa’s (Yeah, the guy behind Fiat 500) “gearbox-next-to-the-engine” system, first used in Autobianchi Primula (1964). Alec Issigonis’ “Gearbox in the oil sump” system is largely abandoned.
Actually Ferdinand Porsche had that idea before WW1. He was working at Austro-Daimler at the time, and one of their early electrics has hub mounted motors.
@@Tommuli_Haudankaivaja as I understand it, 'motor' is interchangeable with 'engine,' but not the other way. Basically, a motor is a power source for a car, be it running on a fuel or electric, but an engine is specifically a combustion engine (internal, as in a car's engine, or external, like a steam engine.)
Front engine layouts also allow for one really important thing: a unified cargo space. Even a small hatchback can store really big items if you fold down the back seats. The C8 Corvette, Lotus Evora, and Porsche Cayman all have pretty respectable storage capacities, but since the storage is split between 2 to 3 spaces, you can't fit larger items.
My only rear wheeled car was a 1984 Mustang Hatchback. I only ever drove front end cars up to this point. Needless to say, it took me about a week to get used to the power, to drive without minor fishtailing. It was a fun car none the less.
Nolan: I'm sorry, did you think you were getting through this without learning some rotational dynamics?! You're in the science zone b!tch. Also Nolan: Proceeds to move on without explaining the topic in any way, shape, or form.
Considering the weight distribution of F1 cars and compare that to a 911 (and the new C8), a more rear based weight distribution seems to be pretty much perfect.

*There is another major reason for front engine placement :* They are also safer during a front impact or accident as the engine block absorbs the major forces, thereby keeping the passengers safe! (especially in cheaper passenger cars with weaker body structures, compared to sports and exotic cars).
Generally the forces you refer to are absorbed by the designated crumple zones designed for that purpose. Engines are typically more resilient to impact forces than the rest of the car & as a result are pushed into the firewall & at times the passenger cabin making front engined cars less safe due to resulting injury using your argument.
Shubhanga K also doesn’t hurt to mention, the more rigid the structure, the more impact load is transferred to the cabin occupants. So a structure built from front to centre in a progressively weak to strong fashion generally results in less g-force transferred to the human body.
I think that was more a result of l, rather than a reason for... mostly because, like he said when the front engined cars came about, there weren't massive speeds, so there weren't many major accidents
this isn't true at all... your decreasing the crumple zone of the car which is the exact opposite of keeping people safe. This is the logical equivalent of putting a bolder under a trampoline to help break a fall
All my early cars were front engine, rear drive. It was ordinary and I learned to drift around curves. Yeah, I learned to drive in Italy. In college, cost drove me to drive a VW Beetle. Great traction in snow. Remember it was all the rage in those days to see how many people you could get in a Beetle and still drive? I had the local record: 17 people. Sure, some were kids but a people is a people! The Beetle needed an EMPI rear axle stabilizer to avoid the wheel tucking under the car; it took some skill to drift around curves. Oversteer was the issue. After college my uncle, Uncle Sam, sent me to Germany for 3 years. Bought a used Citroën DS. Wow, what a car. Not only did the front wheel drive out perform everything else on ice and snow (Germany), but the air suspension constantly leveled the car. On the Autobahn I would put my cup of coffee on the dashboard and go around the curves at 100mph without the coffee cup sliding or sloshing. Great car. Sold me on air suspension and FWD. Check out the Citroën DS on Jay Leno's Garage. Oh, and the headlights were linked with the steering wheel so they turned to illuminate curves at night. Fifty years later I still wonder why other manufacturers did not provide this feature. We, my wife and I, have had several FWDs over the years. But, I did live in Italy as a teen. Got a soft spot in my head, uhh, heart, for sporty Italian cars. We've had 3 Alfa Romeos and one BMW Z3. All great on mountain roads, easy to control. Which brings me to the best handling model. The Alfa Romeo Alfetta. It was front engine, rear transmission. Exceptional balance and control. The challenge was that the drive shaft spun at the same RPM as the motor. (Transmission in the rear.) This was really hard on the rubber doughnut universal joints. Not to worry, I got quite competent at replacing them every 20-30k miles. The best part was that the Alfetta could go to any SCCA event right off the showroom floor and be competitive. Now, why do I tell this story? Back in 2013 I bought a Cadillac ATS, all wheel drive, for my sweet wife. We live in Colorado, ice and snow here just like Germany. Citroën had left the American market so it was not an option. We had lived in Italy for 5 years before returning to the US so Alfa just wasn't the same as in the old days. After looking at several options, the ATS won over the BMW 320. So much for fahrvergnügen. Wait, that was a different company. Wow. The Cadillac ATS is a sleeper. It handles better than the Alfetta, is exceptional on ice and snow, on dry pavement it runs 0-60 in about 5 seconds. It's been low cost to maintain. I'm impressed. GM finally got something right. FWD / AWD / 4WD are all the best options in Colorado. Oh, and if you use your turn signals, the ATS' headlights rotate to shine around curves on mountain roads. Very Citroënesque! I still wonder why it took 50 years to get headlights that show the driver the curve.
My mom's former 2005 Lexus RX330 CUV had Xenon headlights that would rotate when you turned the steering wheel. The only issue is that it would only work 15 mph and higher I believe, so driving around my neighborhood at 10 mph around turns would not really turn the headlights. But since the xenon lights were so wide, you don't really need to have the rotating feature at low speeds, which is probably why the engineers designed the system like that. I believe other luxury car companies have this technology too, probably starting around the same time as Lexus.
Wow, great story! How is the ATS better than the Alfetta?! I have very similar car tastes, so it is interesting to hear why you like the ATS so much! I might have to get one :)
The center headlight turned with the wheels on the 1948 Tucker Torpedo. Yes, that should have been standard equipment on most cars several decades ago.
I think your points are great, in particular when it comes to cars for private ownership. Where I struggle to apply your analysis is with the success of the rear engine 911 platform in racing. That is until I started watching the IMSA GT3 & GT4 series, I began to notice rarely if ever do drivers with a history of initiating rear contact (example the Lexus team) to get past competitor, attempt to nudge a 911. They'll (again the Lexus team) nudge front engine car, they'll nudge a mid-engine car, those few times I've seen a competitor attempt to nudge the rear axle of a 911 (ex C8 Corvette at Sebring) , it's always ended badly for the nudger rather than the nudgee (the 911). Perhaps what I have observed is coincidental. On the other hand, having some an idea of how the german mind works (being of German descent), the Germans have decided the benefit of putting the rear engine directly over the rear axle (eliminating the moment arm for the rear axle altogether) attribute serves to minimize what they cannot control and then they have chosen to manage the negative characteristics to preserve this trait that reduces vulnerability to what is outside their control (a-hole competitors). thoughts?

Mid engine: drove a Lotus once, that thing handled like a dream! Rear engine: owned a 75 VW bug for a while, the front end was so light and wheels so skinny you'd understeer anywhere. Donut: "Mid engine vehicles are the best handling..."
MR2: *sweats in snap oversteer*
Was Thinking Of This 😂
mid engine is the best handling - they do NOT have SNAP oversteer, they have predictable controllable oversteer
Once you learn the car, snap over steer only happens when you want it to.
The only reason MR2s and Fieros had some issues with snap oversteer is one bad drivers and two being most of the engines weight was on top of the axle rather than in front of it like a longitudinal configuration would have been. There is a reason almost all rear mid engine cars are set up longitudinal and not tranverse.

The weights' inertia creates a force which opposes your rotation (F)
This force (F) in turn creates an opposing momentum, or torque (M)
This opposing torque (M) is determined by multiplying the force (F) by the distance from you to the weights, or radius (r).
The bigger the radius, the bigger the opposing torque, the harder it is for you to spin freely.
Pull the weights in and you gain speed.

Hellcat: $59k starting, 6.29 lb/hp, 3.4 s 0-60

Why put the motor in the front or the back when we can just have 1 motor of each tire.
Edit: Replaced engine with motor.
Actually that might be a genius idea
Actually Ferdinand Porsche had that idea before WW1. He was working at Austro-Daimler at the time, and one of their early electrics has hub mounted motors.
Motors and engines are two different things.
@@musewolfman What is the difference?
@@Tommuli_Haudankaivaja as I understand it, 'motor' is interchangeable with 'engine,' but not the other way. Basically, a motor is a power source for a car, be it running on a fuel or electric, but an engine is specifically a combustion engine (internal, as in a car's engine, or external, like a steam engine.)
I appreciate putting the answer right in front. More UA-cam videos need to do this
Front engine layouts also allow for one really important thing: a unified cargo space. Even a small hatchback can store really big items if you fold down the back seats. The C8 Corvette, Lotus Evora, and Porsche Cayman all have pretty respectable storage capacities, but since the storage is split between 2 to 3 spaces, you can't fit larger items.

*There is another major reason for front engine placement :*
They are also safer during a front impact or accident as the engine block absorbs the major forces, thereby keeping the passengers safe!
As if exploding more
this isn't true at all... your decreasing the crumple zone of the car which is the exact opposite of keeping people safe.

Great read!
Damn, what a life, I'm jealous
On the other hand, having some an idea of how the german mind works (being of German descent), the Germans have decided the benefit of putting the rear engine directly over the rear axle (eliminating the moment arm for the rear axle altogether) attribute serves to minimize what they cannot control and then they have chosen to manage the negative characteristics to preserve this trait that reduces vulnerability to what is outside their control (a-hole competitors). thoughts?
