    This helps so much! I always get nervous trying to place the regular vinyl as I'm a perfectionist and want it centered perfectly, so HTV is what I'll be using from now on! Quick question so I can finish using the regular vinyl I have on hand--when you are done sealing with the poly, what do you clean your brush with so it's super clean and ready for your next project?

    • @MakersGonnaLearn
      @MakersGonnaLearn  3 роки тому +3

      So glad it's helped you! We still use regular vinyl many times a week, but we do love HTV. So, we just rinse our brushes off as soon as we use them with warm water for several minutes. Also, make sure the poly is water based and not oil based :) Best of luck!

    • @JackiLeaWWP
      @JackiLeaWWP 3 роки тому +4

      we do a lot of refinishing. I keep a canning jar (with lid) on the table with water and a little dish soap to rinse the brushes. Gently agitate and rinse out really well. Blot dry with a shop rag or towel and hang your brush or upside down in the jar so your bristles have free movement and don't dry all crazy ;) I've been using the same three brushes for the last 5 years.

    Couple things to help. HTV on wood, you can use a heat press, use a bigger paint brush.

    • @MakersGonnaLearn
      @MakersGonnaLearn  3 роки тому

      We do not recommend using a heat press for this. See, wood is not perfectly flat or smooth so a larger press can't easily reach all of the uneven areas of the wood, so it will take much more patience to get into all the grooves enough for the Iron-On to stick to the wood :)

    Haven’t had any issues using outdoor vinyl. What kind are you using that it doesn’t last outside?

      I'm not saying we have issues. HTV lasts a very long time, do whatever works for you though!

    How well does HTV work for outdoors? I am placing Vinyl on Cornhole Boards and want it to last forever or for a while at least. Would you still recommend HTV and then use the Minwax Polycrylic to last longer? Or should we use permanent vinyl and use Minwax?

    • @MakersGonnaLearn

      So, both will work well! For this, I would recommend regular adhesive vinyl, and many layers of brushed polycrylic.

      Sure, you can! But you don't have to unless you just want to or if your wood isn't very smooth.

    Hello. I’m making a 18x36” sign for a customer. I ordered HTV on accident, so I googled if I can use HTV and I came across your video. I’m using a thin piece of birch wood. Would this work with the HTV or should I get the adhesive

    If I am applying the HTV to raw wood (unpainted or unfinished) do you think it needs to be sealed? My problem is the sealant changes the color of the wood a little. If you recommend sealing is there one you recommend that doesn't change the color?

    On the signs like from the dollar store the canvas do you have to seal those too

    • @emmleedee
      @emmleedee 3 роки тому

      It would be the same scenario with dollar tree wood signs. You could use HTV, or regular vinyl and seal it unless you want to be able to remove the vinyl later.
      If you are using a canvas, iron-on works great because canvas is a type of material and the glue will bond to it well. You would just need to make sure that you put a mat or towel in the back of the canvas when ironing so you have a more solid surface to work on.
      Hope this helped!

    Can I use the larger heat press to do this or do I have to purchase the small one you used? Great to know we can use HTV on wood!

    • @MakersGonnaLearn
      @MakersGonnaLearn  3 роки тому +1

      We actually don't recommend that because it's so much harder. See, wood is not perfectly flat or smooth so a larger press can't easily reach all of the uneven areas of the wood, so it will take much more patience to get into all the grooves enough for the Iron-On to stick to the wood :) I hope that makes sense! You CAN do it with a larger press, but be prepared to be very patient!

      It's not the best idea. Since we're not sure what clear coat was applied it quite possibly isn't heat resistant and will burn and ruin your project.

    You mention that the vinyl just won't stay on the wood and that's why you have to seal it with polycrylic BUT if you sealed the wood first with the polycrylic then add your vinyl it will stick ....I have 3 signs in my home that are approx 5 to 4 yrs old that the vinyl is still stuck very good ...I did use 651.
