- How do you care for cane Begonias?
Opal Essense requested that I make a cane Begonia video, so here you go: this is how I keep my cane Begonia plants so happy!
I'm also standing way too close to the camera, um, sorry about that. I'll avoid that in the future. And Greydoe has pointed out that Begonia Maculata 'Wightii' is prononced "white-ee-eye" and I'm totally saying it weird and wrong. Sorry about that! I'll get it right in the future. 😂

Begonias ARE addictive.
First it's Hoyas, then orchids, and then you're knee-deep in Begonias.
Thank You Betsy, for making this Begonia care video! :) This is exactly what I needed. I inherited a beautiful & very old (a friend's great grandmother's) cane Begonia . Definitely feeling the pressure on keeping it alive and healthy. You literally answered all my questions....so appreciate it. Also, love how your kitty always finds a way to make an appearance...so cute!
I'm so glad it was helpful, it's a pleasure to make videos for you and others! 💚Is it the Angel Wing Begonia you shared on Instagram? If so, it's beautiful. I'd love to find one but I haven't seen one in these parts yet.
Dear Betsy Begonia,
Two years ago when my neighbour died the new neighbours got their builders to ominously remove all their garden taps!!😳; rip out and cut up and throw out the exquisite 30 year plus cane begonias in their garden…….into a dirty skip bin full of building waste and dust! 😩😡😩Omg! I couldn’t bear it. I went straight over and got the plants out of the skip after forcing myself to ask the builders permission. I carefully washed every broken stem and origami like leaf in my bathtub. Researched cane Begonias and chose Betsy Begonia (as my favourite wormhole) as you sure must love begonias to name your UA-cam channel after you both❤️. Straight afterwards, I immediately started propagating all of the big and small jumble of broken hacked up and torn plant pieces. Hundreds of bits. Turns out to be the beautiful “Irene Nuss” cane begonia. The Irene Nuss Begonia is an upright tall growing begonia and one of the most beautiful cane like species. This cultivar has been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. This award is given to plants that have outstanding performance in the garden by the British Royal Horticulture Society. This is a classic cane. (Irene Nuss, CA. 1971). All my propagations grew roots , thrived and grew into beautiful plants. I have kept many I grew on, and given some as special presents. The biggest one that I grew is now 3 meters high and 2.5 meters wide. I love it so much. I planted in my garden here ua-cam.com/video/QRhjhMa_WOg/v-deo.html&feature=share
Irene Nuss is beautiful! You did the right thing. I'm so glad you saved them!
@@betsybegonia me too, xo ….I l o v e it (them, as I propagated every broken torn cane into many new plants).
I adore the energy you bring always lol 💕✨💫
I’ve never seen this type of begonia in garden shops around me. It’s beautiful and definitely on my wish list.
They come and go from the shops here in Paris, it's harder to find Begonia Tamaya, and I haven't seen anything but these two so far. I'd like an Angel Wing Begonia but I may need to order it online. I feel your pain! I hope you find one. 😁
greydoe thank you for the suggestion. I love the plants they have in stock but unfortunately I live in Ireland.
What is the name of the first begonia you are holding with the lovely white spots?
I’m the Begonia Killer. So I decided to do some research on the care of begonias before trying again. Your video here is very helpful and I’m hoping to get back into growing begonias again soon because I love them too.
Wow your begonias are beautiful. Especially the second one. So huge. Love your humor and the great info on the begonias. Thanks for sharing.
I try to take good care of them! I just love those polka dots. Thanks for watching, Kathy!
She's so cute and has a soothing voice.
Omg I love you you ur hilarious one of the best plant people videos I’ve seen in a long time you have such an energy about you 🥰🥰❤️❤️
My begonia is coming in the mail from logee's and I'm SO excited! Thanks for the useful info!
I am now officially addicted to cane begonias! I currently have 4 and wanting more lol! This was a great video - thank you!
I just got one today and I’m soooo excited!!!
This was such a good video, thanks so much Betsy
Hahahahaha I absolutely lost it!!
"QUIT IT"
My favourite part 😆
You're funny and adorable.
I'm so glad I found your channel!! I love your attitude :) I recently started getting more into begonias after I got my hands on a strawberry begonia.. oHHHHH I fell in love with them!!
😄😄😄 I'm so glad you found my channel, too! Thanks so much for watching. Begonias are a slippery slope, there's simply something about them that creates total intrigue and obsession!
Thank you I was recently gifted a angel wing Begonia and it is doing sooo good. Thank you for making this video otherwise I would have neglected the humidity part and also knowing they like tiny pots.. otherwise I would have used a huge one for him... thanks!
You are too funny! This is the second video I watched from you, and really enjoy your humor! Oh, and thank you for your begonia care guide!
Thank you for an informative video, love your quirky sense of humour!
You are so much fun ! Great videos 👍😊

Wow your intro was great. It always starts with just one plant...
Very informative as well. Love you 😽
This was brilliant! Thank you.
Hahaha the cat situation cracked me up
First time seeing your videos and you crack me up! Subscribed! :)
Thanks so much for this introduction! What kind of clips are you using to hold the cane stems to the stakes?
Thanks for sharing,I love caned begonias.this is helpful...
Thanks so much for watching, I'm glad you found it useful! 💚

That's so nice! I hope it does well for you.
AWESOME! Thank you sooooooo much!
Thanks for the tips I hope I can get my begonia to look like yours😍
Thanks for sharing! I’ve fallen in love with angel wing begonia recently. But I got one from a online shop that sent me an awful one with only two leaves. Hope that I can save it and it can grow as gorgeous as yours.
Aw, I'm sorry it arrived looking so sad. I really hope you can revive it! Thanks for watching.
Great video! I got this begonia today for my indoor garden. Can't wait for it to grow up against my papaya and banana tree! :-D Again, great video. You got yourself a new follower.
Thanks so much, Christopher! I appreciate the feedback and I'm glad you enjoyed this. 😊💚
Now I can't wait to buy my first Begonia 😂 it looks beautiful
Thank you for the video, great tips for my begonia maculata that needs more appropriate care than what it has received. One question, though not related to begonias I hope you have an answer. The three plants on the wall, what are they and how are they arranged to hang like that?
Love this video, glad I found you.
Thanks Vicky, that's so kind.
Just got a cutting from my mom's plant she that she has had for years and hers have never had flowers. I hope I can get the cutting to bloom.
I like the kitty interruptions 💙!
wow amaaaaaaaaazing
Thanks great information
Just bought one of these yesterday and it’s not in the best shape so hopefully I can get it looking healthy again!
Betsy, I have a Begonia Maculata Wightii and LOVE it. 💗 I also see "Angel Wing" Begonias for sale and than wonder what their differences are? Both seem to be cane types, yet still different. Are they? Also, what is a reputable website to learn about all the different Begonias? Thank you, kindly!! I highly enjoy your channel! ☺️
Thank you! Really helpful!
I like this one Bets! Everyone seems to have one but im still scared so no no not going there! Great info💚👍
should thees be watered from above or below (plant dish)
Great video! Loved your reaction to your cat, haha!
Thank you!
Hi I just recieved 3 of these Begonias through the mail and they are very rough and tops all chopped off, missing leaves crunchy leaves. The shipping box was on point so not the issue. I just got sent bad batch. Anywho I was refunded for them and they said to just discard them but now I think I will try to revive them. Yours looks amazing!
Thanks Betsy!
Super helpful!
they can survive morning sun? so can i keep mine on an eastern windowsill?
Lol 😆 omg I absolutely love your videos. Thanks for the info..
Thanks Betsy I want to try again with this one you know I lost my first one the begonia rex. I tjink Im readu to try another with aall your guidance😊💚👍
Hi, I just bought the same looking begonias but my flowers are pink in the back of the leave are not red but green so what kind of begonia do I have, so can anyone please tell me? Thank you!
Can I put a people tray for humidity? Or will that not be enough?
I just got mine thank u so much 🙏
I received a bagonia maculata today but the ends are crispy and the leaves have brown patches on... Is this a result of not enough humidity? Can I rectify this or prune away the damaged leaves?
Hey Betsy, I'm from the Philippines where it's always summer. Would you recommend a self watering pot for Begonias? Thanks
What is hanging on the wall on the wooden planks?
Hi Betsy! I’ve had a cane begonia for about 6 months. It’s been growing and doing well! Then it started getting red mushy patches on the leaves and dropping leaves. I fertilized it for the first time about 2 weeks ago. What do I do?! Is it gonna make it? 😭
Hi Betsy! You are a genius! Making a vid about a Begonia whilst being funny and entertaining and doing cat care at the same time! Remind me of Diane Keaton. Thanks,Begonias rule!
I love the look of your plant!!! I love how all the leaves face out so you can see all the beautiful spots. My maculata has a lot of leaves that face upward. How could I encourage them to face outward?
I notice that mine will turn towards the direction of light like most plants, so I just turn it now and then.
Not sure if you will see this 2 years later! I just found your channel! I have a begonia question! I just got a baby Maculata, and only 2 (of 6 or so) leaves have dots. Do they develop over time? Or do I just have a wonky plant that doesn’t produce many polka dots?
That is a gorgeous begonia..would love to have one
Perhaps you'll find one soon! I often don't notice certain plants until I learn about them and then suddenly I spot them everywhere!
Nice begonia variety ♥️
Thank you
Where should I place the plant? I get conflicting information saying it should not get too much sun, then I see other things. Would you be able to clarify?
Hello Betsy! I just found this video of yours! I would like to ask, how many plants are in that one pot? Just one or several? I have just received some begonia maculata cuttings and I'm not sure if I should put 1 cutting in a pot or several cuttings in a pot?! Do they just grow, like, UP, or do they branch too? Thanks Betsy!
From one begoniac to another...really appreciate your knowledge and these videos...have been trying the thick stemmed ones and wonder if you have too...
Thank you so much. I am really grateful and happy you enjoy my videos. I am always looking for new Begonias, yeah.
I bought TWO begonia plants last week, so yes, they're addictive. Desperate for a polka dot begonia, I found a tiny one at a nursery and out of the 3 available, I got the best looking one and it already had some browning leaves. Advice for the browning leaves? Should I cut them off? A few new leaves have appeared in the last 2 days so I wasn't sure if I should wait it out until some newer leaves crop up. They're browning at the ends. I think maybe the greenhouse where they were kept may have been too hot for them? I'm not sure! Any help appreciated.
What about the leaves turning brown on the edges?
Hi Betsy! I missed this one, but just finished watching your re potting of your Begonia Maculata 'Wightii' video. Since I need one of these, this was very helpful! I need to get a humidity meter to see if there is enough humidity in my home first. I hope there is! TFS!
You can always get a tiny humidifier like me if you need to increase the humidity in one area. 🙂
I just bought a polka dot begonia yesterday from Lowe’s and it’s not in great condition. I’m trying to revive her. The ends are turning crispy and she just doesn’t look that happy. Please help. ❤️
I want one of these haven't been able to find it.
Hi Betsy, tks for share this video!
I have a question. Why the tip of the leaves of my begonia maculata becoming dry and with brownish spots? Each new leave grows a little bit and then spots and dryers tip appears. Help me please!
Maybe increase the humidity
I have a Hibiscus & Plumeria at the front of my house and I've yet to prune them so I have them in large ceramic pots with large rocks or stones on the top of the soil. If I don't take those precautions on a windy day they will fall down and some damage will happen to the pots and or plants. My Plumeria probably won't make it into the garage this winter without some cutting being made. My remark to your top heavy begonia. I love your videos!😀👍
sooo pretty! :)
It's such a lovely plant.
You make me giggle! Love watching you...new subscriber, found out about you through my beautiful friend Hey its Davy...LOVE her lol! excited to see more videos. Just purchased a dark silver begonia. LOVE calatheas so I think it will do okay around them:)) we will see! I live in Washington state so we don't see much sun hahaha Great video!!
Emily AKA ILLUM.life
Thank you so much! Yes I agree, Begonia would do great among Calathea.
Lovely, just lovely and funny 🤍
I'm trying to propague my basil in that manner, just some water and time, 1 is doing fantasticallly so I have added 2 more that are a bigger type, thou in different vases so not to robb too much space from the small one
Omg your cat is so cute
Thanks for this vedio...... I am very excited to see variety types of begonia........ I am from India
My begonia leaves feel and look droopy! I just purchased it and separated it to share it with my sister. Any suggestions why it might feel heavy and droopy?? 😔
Cane you propagate them from leaves
I just ordered a Begonia maculata, it's on its way to me right now! I absolutely love this plant and can't wait to enjoy it!! Yours is so healthy! I got some liquid fish fertilizer for my plants, do you use liquid fertilizer or any sort of plant fertilizer? Just curious.
Your personality is SO cute and I love how much you seem to love begonias. I will be checking out more of your videos! Thanks!!
Are the flowers fragrant?
Does vermiculite work as well as perlite in soil mixtures for these plants (also hoya)? Because after my pelargoniums got some sort of root aphid thingies that looked like perlite balls (so I missed the infestation way to long and I lost a number of beloved plants) a couple of years ago I'm sort of traumatized and have used vermiculite for a lot of the stuff I would have used perlite for... not for houseplants though (partly because I have almost none atm)...🤔
Vermiculite retains more moisture and perlite provides more air to pass through the soil. I would use vermiculite in potting mix for a plant that likes its soil to remain damp for long periods of time. I've never used it in any of my mixtures.
So nice plant i love it alot but no luck with angel wing begonia each summer i get begonia of many types and they die
Thanks for the tips!!! I'll be receiving a cane begonia soon from Steves Leaves. Hopefully I don't kill it. Love your cat :)
I'm sure you'll take great care of it! And if you ever have any questions, you can always ask! 💚
@@betsybegonia Thank You!!! So happy I found your channel :)
Your character is immaculate
“Don’t let the sun cook your plants” *looks around at my south west dying begonias* I have a really bad issue with powdery mildew in a wet cold climate right now. Do you have any advice for getting rid of it ? Tried one fungicide that bleached the leaves, dropped them, now they’re mostly just stems. Rip.
I got one today but now I'm super worried that is doesn't get enough light in my room and that my air is too dry 🙄 I've heard people put theirs in the bathroom while showering? Have you ever tried that?
Omg I am dying for the first Begonia I love Begonias:
Hi Betsy I loved your video and I am now a new subscriber because of it. I Kind of have a problem. I bought this plant yesterday basically because of the dots without thinking of what it needs are. I’m kinda scared about the humidity. I have a open living house so there’s no way a humidifier is going to work. Someone suggested putting it in the bathroom while showering? Is that enough ? Am I slowly going to kill my plant 😔
Question what causes the maculata to have its newer leafs to fall off ?
A lot of people ask me this and I still don't know.
Thank you so much for your video. I learned a lot. I had a question regarding staking your begonias. I have a rapidly growing angel wing begonia...it basically went from 3 leaves to too many to count over night. I think I will need to stake this fast growing pup, but I have no idea where to begin...it’s not like there are many long stems yet, most of the new growth is coming up and out of the soil, which I am guessing will turn into new stems? Now the pot just looks like a compact round bush of layers upon layers of these large leaves. I am not sure how to approach staking...I really don’t want to damage the plant, but I know I need to do it (stake) at some point. I thought maybe you had some advice? Thanks so much!
Hi Shannon! Honestly I just push the stake down into the soil beside the stem I want it to stablize. You can't really help poking through some roots, but they repair themselves and you're only doing very minor damage.
My main tip is that, since the weight of the leaves will hang outward towards the exterior of the plant and pot, you will want to put the stakes in the soil at an angle so that the top of the stake is aiming in the opposite direction that the weight will pull it. Then the weight will pull it into an upright position. If you just stick it into the soil at a 90 degree angle to the surface of the soil, the weight of the branch may pull it outward and cause it to be slanted instead of upright. I hope that makes sense.
I've had my Maculata Wightii for almost two months and it looked so sad when I got it. FINALLY its about to unfurl a new leaf! But, some of the remaining leaves are sad and dry on the tips. I keep the right humidity, but it seems like the dryness is spreading! What should I do?
Hm, I'm not sure. Maybe it's getting direct sun? The most you can do is provide high humidity and keep it out of direct sun. Hopefully it starts putting out new healthy growth.
