To anyone looking into water options, you should definitely try the fish tank conditioner if you haven't already. I have one plant in particular (red maranta prayer plant) that ALWAYS had browning edges no matter what I did. Since using the conditioner, no more brown edges and my other plants are improving in ways I didn't expect as well. It's super cheap because it only takes 1 ml per gallon of water and you can buy 16 oz for about $9.....thats enough to condition 473 gallons of water. There are two types by API Marine that do about the same thing. There is a simple water conditioner and then one called stress coat. The only difference is that stress coat contains a bit of aloe to help fish with their slime coat. Hope this helps someone.
@@erinmeghan7347 I'm not super knowledgeable on that one but from looking at its chemical effects, I see no reason why not. So your mix doesn’t start with a bag of soil? I’m confused by coco coir cuz I’ve seen the powdery stuff that looks like soil and then there’s chunks, shreds etc. are they allll called coco coir?
If you like it enough I'd say give it a try. While I don't have that particular Begonia the dozen or so I do have sit at a North window for the winter where the temperatures regularly get down to the upper 50's and only occasionally get over 65. They are doing just fine.
I have a plant that I got as a cutting I was told was a scarlet/red rex begonia. Its growth behavior seems really similar (and my instinct is that the advice on soil and moisture here would be great) but I am confused and a bit overwhelmed by all the names for begonia varieties. Is a maculata a type of rex begonia or cane begonia? Or vice versa? Anyone know?

I love this plant!... but i think it hates me though. I have struggled with it for so long, since it is the one plant i refuse to give up on. It is simply too georgious and special. Well... yours are, but mine is now down to only 3 small leaves and they😊 dont look too good. As for water, it only gets rain water so that is not the problem. Maybe the light is, as i live in the dark north of Europe. We will see. I will try follow your advise and pot it in a more chunky mix and see if it can survive then.
At 5:33 Loved how your parental radar honed in on your kiddoe a second before we heard it in our end! 😂 Mine are 15 & 14. It never goes away. 😂😂😂 PS: Love That Begonia!
They say cane begonias can't be propagated from their leaves only. You need to propagate the canes. I've done leaves, they stay green, but nothing can grow out of them and eventually they died. 😊
For what its worth, I have two cane begonias that have been growing actively in my house and the temp hasn't been over 64 in here for over a month. No brown tips whatsoever.
A cupful?! Water conditioner is great for a lot of plants but the ratio should be like a drop per average indoor watering can. To the point where it is hard to put in a small enough amount! Unless we are using _very_ different products or you are preparing a fishtank-size amount of water at once
Funny you should say that, but years ago my parents used to water everything with their water from the washing machine, and everything grew like crazy!, so there’s something to it. I’ve started using diluted dish soap to treat hydrophobic soil and it works just like store bought stuff. 😅
I think you might’ve just saved my polka dot begonia’s life. Mine has terrible brown tips and the leaves stay red instead of turning green. Going to try treating my water with aqua safe!
I have a begonia that thrived When i got it but now the leaves are turning dull green and the growt has almost compleatly halted. I dont know What to do? 😓

So your mix doesn’t start with a bag of soil? I’m confused by coco coir cuz I’ve seen the powdery stuff that looks like soil and then there’s chunks, shreds etc. are they allll called coco coir?
This is my first plant and yours is beautiful! My only worry is, how do I keep it watered while away on a long vacation, say 1 month?
Nice video on begonia maculata. Since my house is set to 64F during the winter, I now know to give this one a miss. Yours is beautiful!
If you like it enough I'd say give it a try. While I don't have that particular Begonia the dozen or so I do have sit at a North window for the winter where the temperatures regularly get down to the upper 50's and only occasionally get over 65. They are doing just fine.
64° 😭😭 my anemic ass could never
@@larrycahoon8465 Thanks for your information. If I see a maculata at a reasonable price I’ll give it a go….
I think I found a source that might actually be helpful to anyone who has a similar question but hasn't found a good resource? Courtesy of a knowledgeable Irish lady: ua-cam.com/video/3pqv6n2PVb4/v-deo.htmlsi=XVFlY9VgVFuIGTPv
Thays so great that you can root just a leaf!! Too bad more plants arent like that :)
Love your content so much! This video was super helpful! ❤❤
I'm so glad! Thank you
Hahahaha I love how you just see a little arm sticking through the crack in the door. just for a split second!
Would you recommend this type of care to all begonias that are not living in a terrarium?
Great vibe and great plant. 😊🌱
Beautiful!♥️ plant!😊
I love this plant!... but i think it hates me though. I have struggled with it for so long, since it is the one plant i refuse to give up on. It is simply too georgious and special. Well... yours are, but mine is now down to only 3 small leaves and they😊 dont look too good. As for water, it only gets rain water so that is not the problem. Maybe the light is, as i live in the dark north of Europe. We will see. I will try follow your advise and pot it in a more chunky mix and see if it can survive then.
Do you think a meyer lemon tree would like your diluted coffee water?? Omg girl, you need to make a video on that too, you're so smart!!!😊🙏
I needed this! I have a bunch in a pot and one of them is like 4 feet tall and I don’t know what to do with it hahah
Omg do you have Instagram? I’d love to see
@@HarliG I’ll have to take a picture and send it to you!
It is so beautiful!

Loved how your parental radar honed in on your kiddoe a second before we heard it in our end! 😂
Mine are 15 & 14. It never goes away. 😂😂😂
PS:
Love That Begonia!
Beautiful begonia!
Mine is about to outgrow the shelf in my Milsbo. I dread pulling it out..afraid it’s going to die. 😵
They say cane begonias can't be propagated from their leaves only. You need to propagate the canes. I've done leaves, they stay green, but nothing can grow out of them and eventually they died. 😊
Damn, I’ve seen them rooting 😭
I received mine as a leaf cutting. From the plant I grew I have I propagated 7 other plants. You can DEFINITELY propagate them from leaves.
@@SheraSMS I don't know then, you may well be right. Mine rooted but never grew.
I have a sun room that faces North/East. Is this a good location for this plant?
Yes!
Thank you!
no issues with bits in mix having mold?
Bits are meant to mold in order to attract the larva to them
For what its worth, I have two cane begonias that have been growing actively in my house and the temp hasn't been over 64 in here for over a month. No brown tips whatsoever.
Wait!! You live in Utah!?? ME TOO!!! 😃
Hands down putting a cupful of water conditioner in my water i have noticed my plamts look amazing
What?!?! Water conditioner???
@@pudik2008 It probably keeps the pests down as well, huh?
I think you might’ve just saved my polka dot begonia’s life. Mine has terrible brown tips and the leaves stay red instead of turning green. Going to try treating my water with aqua safe!
I have a begonia that thrived When i got it but now the leaves are turning dull green and the growt has almost compleatly halted. I dont know What to do? 😓
Do you have an ig? If so, send me a photo of it & I can try to help!
Yes i do! Just sent you a DM there :)
AHAHAHAHA the arm at the door @8:06
💚💚
It was hard for me at first also, maybe we’re just better plant moms at this point
