    I don't think you realized something here. Some people said the test isn't equal due to the aperture but that's wrong. The reason why these two look to be at a completely different exposure is because of Log. The canon 80D doesn't encode the linear raw data in log. What it does is transforms the 14bit linear raw data from the sensor directly into the rec.709 gamma. The Sony doesn't do this. It encodes linear raw data in log. Slog does this secret thing where it lifts up the exposure by 2.5 or 3EV to see into the shadows.
    So when the A7 III is at ISO 800, it's actually at ISO 100 in the analog domain and lifted up 3EV to ISO 800 during the log transform. This is why you can't go lower than ISO 800. Same way you can't go lower than ISO 100 in the Canon.
    Also the Canon 80D boosts its ISO in the analog domain meaning for each stop you go up, the voltage coming off the sensor into the analog to digital converts goes outside of the range that the ADC can handle, leading to reduced dynamic range in the highlights with some improvements in the shadows. This improvement how ever is however is completely done above ISOs of 800 (1135 to be exact). So going above that ISO value is useless. This ISO 800 is equal to ISO 3200 on the Sony side which makes perfect sense as the cameras like A6700 do really badly above ISO 3200 since it's an asp-c camera like the 80d.
    The A7III also has dual native ISO at ISO 5000 ISO 640 to be exact which is why it cleans up when it gets to 6400.
    So this test is quite inaccurate

    Aside from all the comments, I'd say this video was helpful for someone willing to upgrade from an 80D to an A7III or even IV, I can see what to expect.
    I appreciate your time an effort for this video, keep up!

    Nice video. I own the 80d and often wonder how it compares to other cameras. Thanks!

      @@collinausbury Of course man! My vote would be more of the videos that feature you interacting with the audience - whether it's tutorials like you mentioned or whatnot. I think if you find you crave being able to use storytelling skills you could even find a way to blend that in.

    Owning/using an 80D myself, this video helps me a ton, and makes me feel a little better, thinking I need to upgrade when I'm in no rush to do such. I mean yeah, there's a TON of noise at 12.8k, but I mean come on, its 12.8kISO. But also, this is showing me a beautiful dynamic range that the 80D has. The darks are dark, the colors are vibrant. I notice a bit of faded coloring on the Sony, but I'm not entirely sure if it's the glass that's being used or the sensor itself. But this relieves me. Although, I'd love to get mirrorless, I'm too broke and satisfied enough with what I have and can use at my disposal. All I gotta do now is sap out my 24-70 F4 with an F2.8 and have fun. Cheers!

      Canon 80D is a wonderful camera. Light weight compare to my 5D. My main complain about the 80D is how much noise it produce especially with high ISO which is a bummer. Other than that, I take my 80D travel the world. I still love shooting with 80D and it's a great all purpose camera.

    Were you really trying to compare the two? Sony was clearly going to win the low light test. I believe the Canon colors look better though. Just saying...

    • @collinausbury
      @collinausbury  4 роки тому +2

      Ha, no. I knew the Sony would clean house on the Canon, but until you see the images side-by-side, it's hard to know exactly what you're talking about. This is for those who want to see the images put side-by-side, especially to help those on a budget understand what they're getting for the money.
      I agree with you on Canon's colors.

      Yes the canon colors look much more realistic and natural, yes the Sony was brighter but can’t really say better.. hmm

    this is quite cool comparison in my opinion. when your job or must shoot in daylight condition only, i think using 80D is great and enough. when your job only in nightime or maybe both, just take mirrorless. and by the way, i think we're rarely shoot at extreme dark condition like that. street or park lighting are proper tho even not to much bright but it'll do.

    Hey this is helpful! I'm considering if I should sell by canon 80D for sony a7siii (though not the same model but this is good enough for me). there're things about cameras that just cannot show in specs unless comparing side by side.

    That is a nice test... but perhaps it would have been better to work with a manual 50 1.2 lens or even the Canon 50 1.4 or Sigma 18-35 1.8 with the Canon 80D... and try not going higher than 800 ISO. I'm quite sure the images would have come out much more usable. Sony is far superior thanks to the FF sensor and optimizations, of course

    Perhaps one should compare apples to apples. Which the A7 iii is not a equal comparison with the 80D. But I get it. The a7iii Sony looks better in low light.

    As you said yourself (almost) this is quite useless video and i feel sorry u wasted all that time. apples to oranges. There is absolutely no reason to compare those cameras. It's like comparing lamborghini aventador with fiat multipla.

    • @collinausbury
      @collinausbury  4 роки тому +5

      Appreciate the feedback. I agree that the winner was clear before even testing, but I disagree that this was a waste of time. The point of the video was not to see which is better, but to see, in one place, the two put side-by-side in the same conditions. If you're on a budget, this is for those who can only afford an 80D to see if it's worth it, or if they should save their money for a higher tier Sony.
      Regardless, thanks for watching.
