      @@RayOrtega It's for my daughter's memorial service. She passed 02/2020 but we were unable to have her service. My son, a LEO in OK, is unable to take time off to travel. So I'll be recording it the best I can on Saturday, using a battery grip for extended battery life, on a tripod. I'm glad I found your video. Ray, flat out best video on explaining the 80D for video, and photos, because you give your settings but encourage others to find the one they most prefer. You've just taken the massive manual that I have downloaded and printed and made it pointless. Before I kill any more trees (I use recycled paper) I'll check your channel. Thanks.

    At the end you mentioned switching to TV, setting shutter to 1/50th sec. When I switch over to TV there is no longer an ability to change shutter. I want to make sure it’s at double my fps to avoid judder on panning. Why am I unable to set my shutter speed?

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  Рік тому

      Thanks. I mention that those are auto modes which means the camera is going to set things for you. In the case of Canon, TV is 'shutter priority' which means the shutter will set itself so that the exposure is proper. This can be helpful when vlogging and you are not necessarily able to make changes on the fly. However I did miss speak when I said set the shutter to 50 cause of course, the camera in the case of TV is setting the shutter. So if you wanted auto and you wanted shutter to remain consistent, you could use AV which is Aperture Priority. In each case you lose something (control of a variable) but you gain proper exposure in run and gun setups.

    Thank you for your information on your video. It’s very well done and very easy for me to understand. I’m not a beginner and I’m certainly not an expert. I’m at Cannon calls and enthusiasts. I just this past Christmas in 2018 bought the Canon 80D with the 18 to 135 kit lens. I’ve been focusing on learning the stills aspects of shooting the camera but your video got me introduced in the settings for the video portion. One good Takeaway I took from your video specifically was being able to go in and set the shutter button in the front and the back to start and stop videos. The default setting on the rare is OK but it’s a little awkward. This is especially true when your natural muscle memory is to just press the front button with your index finger. Thanks again.

    Hey man! Great video! Useful piece of info> The iso noise reduction makes pictures take twice as long to happen. The first time it takes the picture and the second time the camera takes another picture with the shutter closed to see how much noise the camera sensor is creating. Then it combines the two shots so you have a final with less noise.
    This isn't noticeable and is actually quite nice to have with faster shutter speeds, but if you try to take star trail pictures at night at lets say thirty second exposures, you will only get thirty seconds of exposure for every minute of the camera taking pictures with the shutter held down.
    Hope this is useful to someone 😊

    Thank you so much for this informative video. This has now become my official go to video for all my settings on my 80d. All the settings can be a bit overwhelming at first. When i have to use my camera in different situations, lighting and especially when i have to run and gun that is when it becomes a hard challenge. But it is a good way learn. Thanks for your great video.

  • @avarmadillo
    @avarmadillo 7 років тому +1

    One correction I'd like to make is what you said about the histogram. In the blue section no. 3 there is histogram disp. You can change it from brightness to RGB and back again and it will make no difference from the setting that is established on the screen.
    To actually set the histogram you have to go to the wrench (yellow) no. 3 to "button LV display options."
    There under "histogram" you can make changes that will actually appear on the screen.

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  7 років тому

      Thanks, William. There was some definite confusion about this when I was learning this camera. I mention at 13:30 in the video that the change in the yellow tab is actually the one you'll see on the LCD screen and the blue one will affect the histogram in the review mode but I didn't make this clear in the blue tab section nor does the b-roll help me out;) Appreciate the feedback!

    • @avarmadillo
      @avarmadillo 7 років тому

      I don't see why Canon has made this unnecessarily complicated. Very unCanon-like IMO. Usually Canon menus are pretty clear and straightforward.

    • @avarmadillo
      @avarmadillo 7 років тому

      Actually, I missed that remark. My mistake. But Canon's mistake, IMO, is creating confusion. When you open "histogram" as an exclusive category and are given the option to choose brightness or RGB, you do so and see no effect on the screen what are you to think? Go digging through their terrible manuals?
      Canon is no exception here---not one camera company seems to be able to write a coherent manual or formulate a usable index---some don't even have indexes or table of contents.
      I have a friend who shoots video and actually writes technical instructional manuals and he told me he was appalled at the terrible material these companies publish.

    Awesome and comprehensive video. I have a few questions though that I hope you can help me out with:
    1. Is there acutally any difference between choosing PAL or NTSC? In other words, will choosing one over the other have any impact on the video quality?
    2. Do you ever (does it make sense to) temper with shutter speed, other than when you change FPS?
    3. Do I understand it correctly that 50/60FPS in MP4 is the best for slow-motion?
    4. Can you achieve a good quality slow-mo using 25FPS/30FPSMOV?
    5. I spent a full day recording outside and noticed after the fact that a lot of what I got was overexposed - with lots of black-marked places on the image; plus the image was of a rather whitish color, sort of colorless. How do I best counteract that?
    In other words: if I take a sample shoot, and see that the image is overexposed, what do I do?
    6. DO I aim for the image not to have any overexposition at all?
    I am sure a lot of us folks here could pick your brains when it comes the above so please, get back with answers :-)
    Cheers
    Paul

    • @mikemiller9657
      @mikemiller9657 5 років тому

      1. PAL is for Europe and there are differences. For example frame rates, scan lines and color space. Quality should be similar. 2. Ray suggests using twice the frame rate, which is usually ok. If I am in a very dark situation I use the same shutter speed as the frame rate, i.e., 1/30 sec for 30 fps. Outdoors you might want to use 1/125 or faster to control depth of field. Sometimes action sports look better with a faster shutter speed.

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  5 років тому

      For low light, you'll want to keep the ISO below 1000 if possible for best results probably even lower than that which most often requires a lens with a large aperture like 2.8 or wider.

      In video, shutter speed, aperture and ISO can only be manually adjusted/selected if you are in M manual mode. Any other modes are fully automatic for video. However, you could set cam to M mode, select shutter speed and aperture as you want but leave ISO in auto ISO if you prefer.

    Should most video be shot at 1/50 shutter speed, or is that just your preference? Couldn't you also select Av (aperture priority) and let the camera select the shutter speed to match?

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  6 років тому

      1/50 is the standard for film when shooting 24fps. It's really 1/48 but 1/50th is what you get on a DSLR. This is what we are most used to seeing in terms of motion blur because most movies have done it this way forever. You could let the cam decide but in that kind of setup, I like to set the shutter using shutter priority and let the cam pick aperture and ISO when you need a setup that does it for you such as a vlogging setup.

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  7 років тому

      Thanks, Andrian. 24mm 2.8, you're set. Go start filming;) That's a great focal length on a crop sensor for getting wide enough shots in tighter places like your average apartment sized room and the rest is all about 'zooming with your feet';) That's also a large enough aperture to help out in low-light situations or to get a good shallow depth of field shot.

    Hi, Ray 👍🏻👍🏻 Awesome tutorial on setting up the 80D very knowledgeable and informative content, also I would like to know if you have ever tried to use an external monitor like the Ninja 5 or Small HD monitors I know the 80D does not have clean HDMI out but it there way to use a monitor for the 80D if possible could you do a video showing how to set up the 80D using a monitor. Thanks for sharing, enjoy and have a Great week !!! Danny

      Thanks, Danny. The nice thing about the 80D vs my 60D was that I was getting the full resolution into my monitor whereas the 60D was SD and looked horrible. So if you attached a SmallHD at least the image should be a useable resolution for monitoring purposes, I tried it with an old monitor when I had the 80D in for review instagram.com/p/BER6CHck8tB/?igshid=12rmucy539rxc

    I’m new to this. I’m using my Canon EOS 80D for Live-streaming piano performances. I did some initial tests in manual mode and was quite happy. Then I did a livestream in the early evening and as the hour progressed the sunlight decreased. By the end of the video, you could barely see me 🤣. When you are in a situation like this where the ambient light changes markedly over time, what mode do you recommend?

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  4 роки тому

      Normally it would be shutter priority so that the aperture and ISO could be controlled automatically but the 80D has a weird quirk where this function was taken out of video mode but maybe they did a firmware update to include it? If so, use that otherwise you'll likely need to shoot in auto but see if there is an option to lock the ISO and maybe shutter speed

      @@RayOrtega Thank you so much. I will explore. Another practical solution, if push comes to shove, is to schedule events at a time when light will be more consistent :-). Like tonight's will be at 8:30pm, so I can set things up with my led panel light and ambient lighting and have it be quite consistent.

    Hi Ray, your channel is one of the best shot and most informative ones I've found. You present clearly, concisely and with a nice friendly touch. Big thanks for that, I find others can be a little annoying, especially when their own video is overexposed or poorly framed! I would really appreciate your advice. I have been wrenched left and right by a decision on what camera to purchase. My intention is to film for documentary style journalism, travel style videos for corporate and personal projects. I'm still torn between going full camcorder like a canon ax20 or DSLR such as Canon80d. What do you think would serve me best? I suppose I want the most range of shots I can get from one camera.

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  7 років тому

      Wow, thanks AJ! Choosing a camera is always tough cause you almost always have to compromise something you want. You definitely aren't going to beat the look of a DSLR just because of their large sensor and interchangeable lenses but if you need to record really long run times 30 minutes+ in a single clip, or want to plug in pro mics (XLR), or need ND filters or lots of manual control on the camera in the form of buttons instead of menu diving or a smooth aperture ring, then all of those things would push you towards a traditional ENG type camcorder. I hope that helps a little.

      Bummer. I haven't used the Lexar cards before. If reformatting does not work (reformat in the camera itself) than it just might be that the card won't work. Wow! Absolutely fantastic, Ray. Thanks for putting this up it's really appreciated. I plan to get the 80D as a B-roll camera for my C100. Do you ever use ND filters and if so, what would you recommend?

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  6 років тому

      Thanks! Nice combo you'll have there;) The ND filter I have podhelp.me/fadernd77 is discontinued but I love a "fader" ND because it has different levels of ND to choose from just by turning the ring. There should be others like it, I made a video about it here: ua-cam.com/video/fW6YstY1pOg/v-deo.html A tip I can give when looking for others is to choose a size that has the largest thread, so in my case it was a 77mm which I then could adapt to any lens small than that just by purchasing cheap thread adapters.

      I don't recall but probably yes. Most lenses outside of the newer STM are fairly noisy in AF. Another great reason for external audio. But if you're vlogging, an STM lens is the way to go but even then you have to find the right one. Some are completely silent while others make some noise.

      Exposure comp would work if you were in some form of auto mode such as shutter priority which I like to use for vlogging. In auto modes, the camera will decide the proper exposure. Exposure comp is your chance to dial that auto setting down or up based on what you see the camera doing. Some cams will overexpose skin too much for my liking and in that case I would dial the shutter comp down a couple clicks. I talk a little about it in my a6500 vlog settings video ua-cam.com/video/PcIQpkA20X4/v-deo.html around the 3:30 mark

    Hi Folks. I second shoot for a videographer with the 70D & 80D. Both great cameras. Here is one thing that has caught me out once or twice tho ad its not specific to these two cameras when shooting video. Whilst the lock button is great to have for locking the aperture ring, I have accidentally moved the shutter speed dial, say, when taking camera off a tripod etc, but failed to notice that I have inadvertently moved the dial by accident. It is probably impractical but if there was a locking mechanism for this dial, that would be great...OR...perhaps I should be more vigilant in the future! Just my thoughts....

    Hello Ray. Great video. Been following your channel a while and you put out very informative and well planned videos. Thank you for that. I noticed you have the Sony a6500 as well and I was wondering which you'd recommend? I need a camera to record myself and 4k isn't a priority even though I might downscale to a 1080 timeline if picture quality is that much better. The convenience of the flip out screen is nice as I see you have to attach an external monitor to the a6500 when shooting yourself. My questions is regarding what you consider to be a better package. If you have to keep one and sell the other, which would it be? Thank you so much!

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  6 років тому +1

      Thanks, Miguel. For most people I'd probably recommend a Canon. They are easier to work with and if you don't need 4K then you can save some money. I think the best deal in DSLRs right now is the SL2 amzn.to/2Jupmok it's kind of a hidden gem and is an 80D in a body with a few less features such as top LCD screen but better internally. Easy to vlog on too cause it's small but if you're 'in the studio' you can still use the flip out screen and the AF is best on the market. Of course you can get the 80D if you want a better body but the SL2 could also clear up some extra money for a nice lens

    60 frames 120 shutter speed etc..

    • @RayOrtega
      @RayOrtega  5 років тому +1

      I would maintain 2x the frame rate for the shutter but you may want to increase your frame rate, I think of times, sports is recorded at 60fps so that you see more of the action. So that'd be 60fps, 1/120 shutter

    Also which picture profile do you use, I'm currently using standard, just wondering what looks best, I'm new to using dslr cameras so I don't really know what to do, its kinda frustrating, i have my export setting set to 1080p 24 fps, which matches my camera settings and it still looks bad, could it be that im using the kit 18-55 lens with my t7i?

    Great video Ray. My question ist, why all the helpfull things like the histogram or the exposure peak are not visible while recording. Especially for the exposure it would be nice to see right away if there is something blown out and not only after having shot the take. Is that function disabled by software or aren't DSLRs generally not capable of giving that information while recording? Thanks.

    Forcing myself out of the nest and shooting a fashion show after a friend backed out. Never used my new 80D for anything other than stills and don't want to screw up. Basic one camera at the end of the runway look because that's what I have. Can't sync up audio so I will attempt to do it in post. So one long take, music added at the end unless the camera audio is of good quality along with stills that I will shoot before the show. I don't want to get fancy and screw up so I will just shoot it at your best option settings. 24fps etc. Any other advice? Thanks

      Good luck. Make sure to white balance for the scene, get a good exposure with proper video settings like 1/50 for shutter and don't change it. Try to use your ISO as low as you can to limit the noise but you'll have to use a decent amount because the hardest part will be maintaining focus. If you open the aperture for your exposure then you're going to have a shallow DOF. You'll have to decide what you are going to focus on and set it. If you use auto, you might want to set it for the middle and line up the models there so that it tracks them down the runway. Good luck!
