Best camera Canon has ever made. I had an r5c and opted to go with three r8s instead. Sure, it overheats sometimes but that's the only issue with the whole camera.
The lack of buttons on the N/S/E/W dial is strange, and the false stabilization at 7:27 .... It's very disappointing to me. The fact that it's not GYRO makes it to where you can't use the Digital IS or Enhanced IS to crop in (like Sonys clear image zoom) when on sticks. Pascal, I noted in all your videos and comments that in the end you chose the R8 over the R6ii? If I want to do talking head UA-cam no more than 15mins with 60p b-roll, light vlogging, filming and pictures of family travel would you also select the R8? It seems to line up well with your uses being similar to mine. My only thoughts and reservations are the R8 battery being poor, the R6ii ibis wobble while vlogging, the R8 grip being much shorter though I don’t have a problem bringing extra batteries or buying the grip extension if need be since it is so portable. Or in the case of the Ibis wobble on R6ii simply using enhanced digital stabilization at 15 mm making it closer to 24 to avoid the wobble but I don’t want degradation of the video (I don’t think it does because it’s downsampled from 6k in camera for this?) I would also primarily be using the 15-35 2.8 like you I love that lens. Would appreciate your expert opinion in my case. Thank you
It seems like the compromises for this camera are thus: no IBIS, so if you want it super smooth get a gimbal or deal with OK but potentially wonky stabilization. battery life is super small, so get extra batteries or invest in a battery grip. can't use it for longform one take content, so you probably won't be able to do a vodcast for more than an hour without breaks unless you A.) shoot in 1080p and B.) maybe run it off a power bank to extend the battery life. but no problem for short clip shoot to edit indie filmmakers. no 6k even though the 4k is oversampled from 6k so you still get the benefits of added sharpness and detail from 6k. not a dealbreaker unless you intend to ship the final product in 4k and still crop in for VFX work or something. no raw video output via HDMI for atomos recorders. For a 1500$ camera i'd say thats more than a fair compromise considering you still get fantastic low light, an incredible sensor identical to a premium 2500$ camera, CLOG 3 and a bunch of great photography features that punch above its weight all in a lightweight easily gimbal-able package. I think i'm going to buy it.
@@pascalbasel I've already got a collection of EF lenses i'll be adapting but sadly none of them have IS. Its no problem though because i already have a gimbal that supports a much higher weight limit. And i'm not shooting interviews for hours on end anyway, but even if i was, i already have a 45w usb C power bank, and i don't think 4K 60fps will be necessary for that kind of content... if 4k 24fps is still overheating, 1080p will probably suffice for that style of content since exceptional quality is not really the goal in that scenario. Seems that almost all the flaws of this camera can be mitigated in some way.
The record button can actually be programed. Also, you can program a button to do a crop, but why do that? It's the exact same thing as cropping in post anyway.
No, the record button can't be programmed in movie mode (I'm not talking about photo). Cropping in the edit for video means cropping from a 4K resolution, while cropping in camera means cropping from 6K. So in camera you keep an actual 4K resolution.
Great review. I just purchased R8. Like it so far. Do you know what is the maximum weight of the lens that this camera can handle on a tripod without any support brackets? I am looking to use Sigma 12-24 plus adapter of the total weight about 1.3kg

Hey pascal, that is so frustrating why the 6ii won't let you only use the Lens IS but have to have both camera IS and lens IS on Would you recommend the r8 over the r6ii because of this?

What are the best lenses for a 3 person studio in a tight space . Are the F/4 lenses good for studio lighting or should i go for f2.8, they are too expensive for me at this point and i wonder if it is worth it to pay rwice as much if there is good lighting, besides some primes

Interesting indeed, but I also bought the R6 II after the R8 was released. It seemed like a case of "buy it nice or buy it twice". It's a great camera with almost all of the same capabilities, but with no IBIS for mid to long focal lengths, smaller batteries and a less durable body, it makes the R6 II look like a lot more of a longer lasting investment and a better user experience.
I just got it, I think it's gonna be amazing, one thing that is a downside that no stabilization but that's Okey, I'm always rolling on a gimbal. Can't wait for the 4k footage. My previous camera was the m6 mii so it's a big change for me
I traded in both my R10 and RP to get this camera. It'll be here today. I hope I'm happy. I've been shooting more short films lately and wanted LOG. I shoot Wildlife and wanted the fast fps and autofocus. I shoot Landscape and wanted Full Frame dynamic range and high ISO. This checks all those boxes.
Its a great camera. Ive used it for 6 months to do product photography as well as travel camera. Only negative is no iBIS but for 1,500 its the best you can get. I think having this and a Canon R5 covers most bases.
I think that the R6 mark ii is much more future proof investment, with ibis on the sensor, semi pro camera, it is much better suited for someone who wants to go full frame. For 1500$, the same price of the R8, I would go for the high end Canon apsc camera, the R7. So for my opinion, 1500$ should go for the very good apsc camera, instead of the entry level, somewhat crippled ff camera.
That's why reviews should be about that the flexibility that cameras give you for post production and not, or only a bit about how they look sooc. And of course, usability, system etc.

Are you recommend this for first camera?
Great first camera, and maybe the RF50mm 1.8 to start...
@@dexio8601 I thought about it SIGMA Art 50mm F1.4 DG HSM
@@XJWPX I have the Sigma Art 50mm, it takes beautiful photos, you will need the RF adapter and it's much heavier than the RF50mm 1.8...I just got my RF50mm today and took a few photos...close to the Art, art a little better, sharper.
@@dexio8601would you recommend the R8 over the Sony Alpha mark 3? I am torn between these two. I see the advantage of buying a Sony Alpha mark 3 cause then I could get the much cheaper sigma lenses . But would it be better to buy the R8 and then an adapter and that way I'd still be able to buy the sigma lenses. I don't know what to choose 🥹
@@dexio8601what lens is best for videos in canon r8
I just directed a doc with Venice 2 cameras and I would have no issue using using this as a c cam.
Exactly the review I was looking for, thank you! I'm looking for a compact, lightweight full frame camera with good dynamic range, but worry about overheating when shooting 4K/60 since I live in Thailand. So it's this or the Panasonic S5 II then for me.
there's a bit overheating if you continuosly shoot i 4k/60fps..im shootibg 4k with r8 for my wedding video. if you at outdoor with a hot weather it will trigger the heating issue 😅
lovely video bro, nice and clear , u got a lot of fans hehe
This is really helpful. 👍
Would the R8 be good enough for cooking videos?
it's an overkill
Can we use canon R8 by powering using powerbank, I mean not for charging but for power it on to shoot?
Yes, as long as the power bank supports PD charging for 30w or higher. I use a 10,000 mAh 45w PD power bank and I can shoot 6+ hours with it.
Hi Pascal but what about 120fps for slow motion and use for wildlife thx
I only shoot 4K, so for 120P I‘d choose R5, E1/a7Siii or X-H2s.
Awesome video! Quick question: do you know how low the shutter speed can go when in video mode? Looking for a camera that can get that cool slow/delayed shutter effect for video. Thanks!
It’s not a Mirrorless camera or DSLR, but the Panasonic HC-X2 can do that.
i love this camera
Canon has a very nice range of inexpensive primes the16mm 35mm 50mm 85mmthe 24-105 stm
how come is getting cropped, isnt it full frame?
thxxxx for this!
that shell though will never be a power house. overheating issues is subjective to the user. unless you record longer which can be planned in advance actually.
Hi
Great review 👍🏼
Where is the link for your Tailor?
Just added it
Just buy a 3rd party EOS RP battery grip to help lessen those "battery concerns".
That defeats the purpose of having a small, lightweight camera. But as mentioned, the battery is not a problem for me.
I bought it and it helps a lot!
Can we use sigma 35 with this camera as canon has stopped 3rd party lenses . Thanks
Canon stop the 3rd party lenses for RF mount (R8 uses RF mount). So, you need to have that "RF adapter".
You can easily record weddings with the r8. You just need 4 batteries 😅 and 24-70 2.8 lens
2:04 nice suit
just wondering how it would handle 4k 60p on a beach shoot where the body is hit with direct sunlight.
Same as R5, R6 etc.
tough question for you @pascalbasel , R8 or the Fuji x-s20 for a light and fun camera for photos and some eventual content creation videos. I have a lot of RF glass already, but I'm looking for a light and fun carry plus the Fuji film presets look very enticing as I hate editing my photos. Great review btw - I just found your channel and I'm subscribed and digging it. Cheers
If you wouldn't have the rf lenses already, I'd say X-S20, but you already got them ;-) Hower, X-S20 + Sigma 18-50 is definitely a fun setup and not that expensive.
@@pascalbasel exactly my thoughts! I might pull the trigger on the X-S20 just for fun to see what it's like. having a light and compact zoom lens that can shoot relatively wide open like F2.8 is also enticing about the 18-50mm set up. Canon doesn't seem to have many light zoom RF lenses that still have a low aperture. Thanks!
LOL at the f u suit... I need that
Hey pascal,
that is so frustrating why the 6ii won't let you only use the Lens IS but have to have both camera IS and lens IS on
Would you recommend the r8 over the r6ii because of this?
I just sold my R6ii for the R8, but both have their advantages.
@@pascalbasel dang, gonna get the r8 now lol
@@pascalbasel Didn't you miss the longer battery life, AF joystick, higher res viewfinder of the R62 ?
@@vinvanid All answered in the video.
Where did you find an r8 for south of 500$???
Would this be a good camera for a podcast recorded indoors?
The only issue would be the battery life and overheating. If the studio is air conditioned plus you're using a battery dummy, it should be fine.
If you buy a portable charger and connect to the R8, the heat goes to the portable charger.
I was able to do 4K30 for over 3 hours without overheating.
What are the best lenses for a 3 person studio in a tight space . Are the F/4 lenses good for studio lighting or should i go for f2.8, they are too expensive for me at this point and i wonder if it is worth it to pay rwice as much if there is good lighting, besides some primes
f4 is good enough. Some shoot at 5.6 for better focus.
@@alexanderkapsiotis8050thank you, I got the R6 Mii with rf 24-105 f4 and rf 14-35 f4, rf 24 1.8 and rf 50 1.8, very excited to start using them, will add a second camera soon.
@@badawiq Woah! A hefty collection. The 24-105 has you covered for most video shoots. The primes are good for a better dof look. Enjoy your glass!
Thank you@@alexanderkapsiotis8050
Which lens did you use for the forest panning @ 8:16 ?
I think that was the 15-35 2.8 L

r8 has 10bit color support
What do you think about the Canon R8? Interesting camera or meh?
Interesting indeed, but I also bought the R6 II after the R8 was released. It seemed like a case of "buy it nice or buy it twice". It's a great camera with almost all of the same capabilities, but with no IBIS for mid to long focal lengths, smaller batteries and a less durable body, it makes the R6 II look like a lot more of a longer lasting investment and a better user experience.
So far I love it!
0901 -rolling shutter!
RS is average
@@pascalbasel I meant at that actual time 0901 (bus passing) - Ive an r6i and dont think its too good :(
Does the camera crop in the sensor when you shoot in 4k? thx!
Just with 4K 60
there is no crop here unless selected by the user, even the 4k 60 is uncropped @@mb-watches
@@BuiltInception that would be great news, thanks for the update, I watched a review when it came out where this was mentioned.

would you go for R8 or R6 if the price difference is 300eur?
R8
I have R8 and its AMMMMMAZING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!))))))))))))) and rf 24 1.8 and Lexar x1667 256 also i have :)
Sure is
Which one is better r7 or r8?
What are you planning to shoot? In a general perspective I would go R8. But the R7 can be very good for telephoto.
Idk man, this camera is cool. I just notice the DR aint as good as other cameras. Highlights clip too soon.
Thanks!
Thanks Pierre 👍🏻
so the R8 is good nad best r not?
OMG. The crop in using enhanced was terrible. It was hard to watch. The camera acted like it couldn’t focus all the way 😢
Nice 🤝😎
After watching The Bourne Identity no camera looks shaky 😵💫👍
Pascal, if you see this comment would you recommend the R8 for filmmaking, promotional videos or any other cinematography contents?
Wow bro looks really great thank you so so much 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Thanks 👍🏻
10:45 that enhanced stabilization is actually really good. 12:49 😂😂😂
❤❤❤❤❤
That camera is a mess! Bought one, returned it the next day!

Whats the point of the smallest and lightest full frame, when their lens are gigantic.. 😂
That's a good point ;-)
Meh...
Haha 😂 Only Fans... I get it 😮😊
It’s meh.
I think that the R6 mark ii is much more future proof investment, with ibis on the sensor, semi pro camera, it is much better suited for someone who wants to go full frame. For 1500$, the same price of the R8, I would go for the high end Canon apsc camera, the R7. So for my opinion, 1500$ should go for the very good apsc camera, instead of the entry level, somewhat crippled ff camera.
the fuck you suit texture...so funny
it really is lol

That's why reviews should be about that the flexibility that cameras give you for post production and not, or only a bit about how they look sooc. And of course, usability, system etc.
