  • Amy Winehouse performing a Live acoustic version of Back To Black. for album promo on Back to Black. She was so nice, unassuming... just concerned with practising with her guitarist to get the tracks as good as they could be.

      It's a heartfelt song for her, she had unreturned love for her own true love. Some girls get hangups about guys which makes them depressed for years. so she is going back to black and her love obsession probably cost her life in the end.

    What I’ve always loved about Amy is that she can sing a song a thousand times, yet never do it the same way twice..
    Inflections change, timing gets altered for effect, strength and wistfulness in tone sometimes are exchanged according to mood. When she delivers, you get every piece of her heart in a song because she IS/was her music.

      It's not boredom... she didn't study music, she was a natural so she could or even had to improvise within the boundaries of her compositions. Just like Kurt Cobain, Jimmy Hendrix and countless others, she didn't write the music down, only the lyrics, that's all she really needed to remember, the rest came as she performed.

    I think this is my favourite recording of her singing this song. No screaming audience screaming stuff at her. It’s just her and the guitarist and she somehow seems just extra open, vunerable and raw. It’s so beautiful, honest and moving. What a talent, what a soul!
    It’s so rare in the 'music business’ where the truth is it’s all about an image and the ‘look at me’ money making machine and it is not about talent or soul. This performance brings me to tears. She was the real thing. So rare.

      That is a persona many famous people put on... but they keep doing things to make themselves famous. People who actually don't want to be famous aren't famous.

    • @Luke-cb8ub
      @Luke-cb8ub 4 роки тому +77

      Hot Dogs yes it *can* be an image thing, but that is so far from the case for Amy or Kurt. You’re projecting your own beliefs and desires onto these people.
      Kurt and Amy sang and made music. Because it’s what they loved. Of course they may (or may not) have dreamed of success, but it’s very clear that whether they dreamed of it or not, they wanted nothing to do with it once experiencing it. And if that’s not the case, that must be why they were both so happy...right?

Amy Winehouse is one of them. People talked so much shit about her. I think the magic is how she makes it look effortless while putting 100% of her heart into it. She was so real that it just bursted out of her. It’s so tragic when people like Amy are taken so young. It’s amazing that decades later the music has stood so strong against the test of time and probably another few decades from now someone will be watching back on this video and feeling the same way. I remember listening to her since she was alive and all these years later it’s an odd feeling to think that she was a real person that existed. I can’t put this feeling into words except to say it’s feels as if she was too real for this world. She had so much grace in living even with pain being able to take raw emotion and turn it into something so potent it still pulls my heart strings so deeply. I’m sure anyone who knows what love is can feel her music & probably understands exactly what she’s talking about though it’s a feeling that isn’t so easy to speak in plain language or to simply write on a keyboard. It’s something that bellowed from so deep within her that it speaks volumes upon volumes more than just the words themselves. She was a truly amazing beautiful artist and singer. I will always remember her fondly.

    I feel like she's improvising, but I know how much of a hard worker she was. She was constantly working on music - understanding it and studying it. She was a huge fan of the jazz blues divas, particularly Dinah Washington and Sarah Vaughan. So it seems she improvises like a true jazz singer, but she's a huge music theorist when it comes to so many genres. She was even a fan of Thelonius Monk, and I've read comments that he was a genius and that his compositions were in the highest levels. If you're a jazz singer, you must be a music genius.

      @Damon McGeachy As a die hard Amy fan, I strongly believe that Amy felt her music in words in every sense. However, after much consideration and viewing her live recorded performances; I strangely and perhaps wrongly believe that her somewhat intoxicated spirit due to alcohol created some of her most honest and beautiful performances. However, whenever she was visibly high from stronger substances it overtook her talent and overshadowed her performances as a whole. I am no stranger to alcohol or substance abuse and in no way romanticizing this behavior but believe this is a small part of her troubled brilliance. Long live Amy forever xoxo

      I think she's annoyed because she still feels for this fella and she can't understand her feelings, because he did terrible emotional things to her. The following line "I love you much, it's not enough." Could've hit her also, because she knows that she couldn't do anything to save their relationship, she just had feelings for him, which wasn't enough to save their relationship. Amy was phenomenal on so many levels, whether it was the rich quality of her voice, the way she improvised differently and flawlessly with nearly every performance, or her skills at writing those amazing songs she gave us. I loved how she took bluesy jazz, blended in some smooth soul from a long gone Era, and brought those old styles to our modern world. "Back to Black" was inspired by her relationship with Blake Fielder-Civil. He had left Winehouse for an ex-girlfriend, leaving her going to "black," which to the listener may appear to refer to drinking and depression. However, the "black" to which she refers is more likely heroin, to which she was openly addicted; "black" is the second most common street name for heroin in Los Angeles

    • @njpj527
      @njpj527 8 років тому +44

      +juicer404 It was just drinking and depression. The black's just a metaphor. She didn't start the heroin until after her and Blake got back together. Hence why she looks so much better here, and sounds better. This was before the hard drugs. I'm way to familiar and obsessed with her story.
      Wouldn't it've been cool if she'd written about when it got worse...cool meaning deep; would've been darker. This music described a time period that no where near matched the black that was to come.

      "u love blow, and i love puff, and life is like a pipe"
      i was more thinking her boyfriend preferring blow, "cocaine" and he prefering "puff", possibly smoking crack, giving reference to pipe all so, just cause she looks good here, doesnt mean she wasnt dabbling, was just better at hiding here maybe, or maybe before it got a grip on her properly

    • @njpj527
      @njpj527 8 років тому +24

      Puff is weed. She used to smoke a lot of marijuana and Blake didn't like it; he liked coke. After a while she asked to have some, which he said took him aback, and that was the first time she used anything hard, and we all know what happened from there. Like I said, I have scoured the Internet for Amy. These songs were written after their first affair.

      I do agree with that assessment. Only recently have I discovered that. The best originals that I've heard the past week were from artists in pain from a loss of some sort. Sad but true.

      Live versions of pretty much anyone are usually better. Not sure of your era, but I was in college in the early 70s & at that time you went to concerts specifically NOT to hear the studio version. Lipsyncing? Absolutely unheard-of, would have been considered a travesty. That seemed to change at some point. The last concert I went to was one Reader's Digest version of the record after another. I felt sick & left early.

    • @Beherenoww
      @Beherenoww 5 років тому +24

      The thing is... she never sang ANY song the same way twice. She's a true Jazz singer. She didn't plan out her riffs, she felt them out. So saying one version is "better" than another is kinda missing the point of what makes her so great. Singing riffs isn't that rare of a talent these days, but being able to improvise the same song countless ways is. Some would call it singing with soul, but even soul singers often plan out the notes they are going to sing. Being truly spontaneous is a vulnerable way to perform, but if its done successfully you'll connect to the listener's emotions in a much more profound way. I'm obsessed with her live performances, but I also wouldn't change a single note on her album. It's a work of art.
