    Couldn't really tell the difference in brightness until you did the night portion. And the light reaction time difference is huge!
    Nice classic old VW too. Hope to own one myself someday!

    Hola, saw this video featured while lurking TheSamba. Really great video with thorough explanation & demonstration. Heading out today to replace the old incandescent bulbs with the LED drop-in replacements.
    While the lower power draw is a definitive plus as well as the difference in brightness being more evident at night, the response time to activation is what sold me on this upgrade.

    I've been wanting proper drop-in LED lights for my vehicles for many years, but most are junk. Saw these at the store today, but hesitated due to pricing. I hope they come down more in price soon, as it would be expensive on my vehicles, if I included the separate bulbs for running lights and the front turn signals as well.
    I've always known LEDs lit up faster, but i was amazed that even setting playback speed to 0.25 they still come on instantaneously!
    Thanks for the vid!

    Great, informative review. Finally they have the reflection problem figured out. So many LED bulbs just appear as a small dot because the LED positioning on the module is poor and they don't reflect. These look great!

    I have 2 brake/turn signal bulbs per side on my 71 Dodge. I wonder if I could use just 1 led per side. It'd be brighter than it is now and would still have quick response time for part of the lights. If I kept incandescents on the furthest lights out it may even have a sequential look with the turn signals. But would it work?

    Even without the Slo-Mo video, could tell differnce in the bulbs Tun-On time. Thanks
    Modern LED bulbs, from reputable Mnfrs (Philips, Sylvania) get to full brightness faster than incandescents. Aprox 0.001sec LED vs. 0.150sec incandecent. Add the turn-on time to average human reaction time(0.25 sec), the guy following you is reacting about half a second behind you! That extra eigth of a second might be valualble.
    Even ignoring the 50,000+hour lifetime, LED brakelights are cheap insurance!

    Hey Thomas!
    Nice video - glad to see it worked out!
    Are these bulbs specific for older cars with retrofit?
    Ive tried replacing my blinker and braking lights with several different LED bulbs on my VW LT 28 (1984) and they dont react at all. :( But the normal old bulbs works.
    Hope to hear from you.

    If you have a car that goes through tail/brake lights frequently, you'd be much better off switching to LED bulbs.
    But turn signal bulbs are a different story. You'll need slight electrical modification to make them work properly.
    Personally I'd stick with incandescent for the turn signal bulb.

    • @zacmich6472
      @zacmich6472 2 роки тому

      Halogen turn signals have a nice pulsing effect to them, and for an unknown reason are brighter. The red Premium LEDs for the brake lights are super, but unfortunately Osram (or Sylvania) stopped making them.

    • @1silvervespa
      @1silvervespa 5 років тому +1

      You'll have to get Your Signal light bulb # from your owners manual or take the old bulb out read the # on it's base.
      Each car is different .
      Unless you State Year Make and Model ..... we cannot answer what Your signal light bulb will be.
      The parts retailers will look it up for you .
      These are very common now at most parts outlets.

      Hey did you ever go through with the led's? Did it work? I have a 71 Dodge that has tail lights that work like yours. 4 tail lights that all work as brake and signals too. I was thinking of just using 2 led's, 1 on each side, the ones towards the middle. I heard that as long as you don't change the front turn signals to led's then there wouldn't be any hyper-flash, but I don't know for sure.

I can hear the relay clicking, it makes this click during the day as well when my headlights are not on. • @cookaacoo

  • @DanielinLaTuna

    • @jamesfunk7614
      @jamesfunk7614 6 років тому

      Likely the camera is adjusted for ambient light. The bright light from the brake lights causes that part of the picture to be overexposed. The camera could be adjusted for the brake lights, but then the car and background would be too dark. All you would see would be the brake lights.

  • @WH6FQE

    The only issue with changing over to LED bulbs is with turn signals. If you just put LED bulbs in a vehicle turn signal that was designed for incandescent bulbs the turn signal will not work properly because the turn signal flasher is designed to work on the higher current draw. If you do not compensate for the current difference the speed of the turn signals will be incorrect causing a flash rate that is way too fast, and some police will cite for this. I received 4 tickets for this before I put the regular bulbs back in.

    • @cookaacoo
      @cookaacoo  6 років тому

      You could install a "LED Flasher Relay" for $7 to fix this. Installs in place of your old flasher relay.

    I assume that the part number for the turn signals is 1156. I have amber turn signal lenses on my '72 Super, so since the "R" suffix means "red", would there be an amber version and would it have an "A" suffix?

      +Thomas Duncan Well I've seen a set of Sylvania Zevo 1156A LEDs, but they say "For Off-Road Use Only". Should I go on and purchase them anyway?

    • @cookaacoo
      @cookaacoo  8 років тому +1

      +Joseph Heston I would.
      My package did not have that printed anywhere on it. Maybe its a early version?
      Usually means they are not DOT approved (yet)
      For example everyone who buys EMPI products for their VW's says "offroad use only" just a way for them to get around the law.

    Does Sylvania zevo 1157 bulbs hyper flash while applying breaks ?

    • @toyotabrony
      @toyotabrony 5 місяців тому

      1157 led amber for front turn signals with very low wattage like 2 watts, yes it will hyperflash.
      If u our a load equalizer resistor, led fladher relay. Or just get an led bulbs with a built in resistor will stop the hyperflash

      Yes, most modern cards from 1995+ have a "cunbus" system, since the resistance of the LEDs are low, the computer thinks the bulb is out.

    are you suggesting incandescent bulbs will wear out your wiring??

    • @cookaacoo
      @cookaacoo  4 роки тому

      Not wear out, but with age some of the wiring will build resistance (50 year old wires) And having less amp draw on your generator - less wear on the generator brushes & generator. Also the lower amp draw on the headlight switch which will delay failure of these parts.

  • @ramiretz
    @ramiretz 6 років тому +5

    RED LED behind RED LENS is used because of the Wavelength of the LED a White LED doesn't emit in the RED wavelenght so if you put it behind a Red Lens the lens filters out alot of the white wavelenght and you get very poor performance...... a normal bulb have a very wide range wavelenght a LED doesnt have.

    I'm new to all this, but didn't you have to install a "resistor", I think it's called, to prevent the LED bulbs from blinking really quickly due to them consuming too little power and "confusing" the car? Or maybe that's just turn signal bulbs. I think it is actually. This was a wasted comment.
    Good video and I love that little car :)

    • @Anagramslol

      Depends on what flasher you have. Older cars will have thermal flashers that create an electronic resistance to pulse your lights. Upgrading to a fully electronic flasher will solve most hyper-flash issues, and for much cheaper.

    • @MartinScheuerJr
      @MartinScheuerJr 7 років тому +1

      for alot of vehicles you can also get a replacement flasher that will add a load to compensate. they are about 20 bucks. if you have issues, its alot easier than installing a resistor on each light
