Great look from my time - some time back. Put some Armor All on those lenses and they will look like new. Keep the new ones as spares or whatever reason. The old one look good to me.
Just bought my first project car and I took it to a car meet in L.A. I was going on a cruise and the 51 Chevy in front of me had these blue dot tail lights and I fell in love. I just bought some and I cant wait to pop them in. I think theyre illegal in California but who cares. What isnt? lol
If you drill into those new lenses heat up a nail and center that on your center spot and it will melt a small round place where your drill will not glide off the center you want.
The authentic blue dots that I saw on cars in the 1950s were focused to emit an intense blue light which our eyes can't focus on. They had a distinctive hazy appearance that overwhelmed the red. The modern replicas I've seen don't work the same. Maybe that's just as well since they were annoying.
Yea these aren’t true blue dots. They’re cool and add a flare of times gone by, but don’t emit the same effect.
2:37 A Corvette would be “over-compensation”. Ha!
Definitely try Quick-Glo polish on lenses and 100 other things. It’s even old school looking. It’s on Amazon & went from $10 to $19 in a hurry. Got my blue dots ready for my 57 Olds!
Nice,,Best Regards
Good vid and story Brian
In California at least, they aren't legal. But like so many little things, you might never get caught or ticketed for having them, but if showing your car, a trained judge would take points off for having blue dot tail lights - but I love the way they look anyway!
I don’t care what a judge would say, this car wasn’t built for anyone else’s approval but mine. If others like it, well thats cool, if they don’t, they can keep walking. I don’t know of any specific reasons they would be against the law. They don’t obscure the illumination of the light.
I looked and looked for a set of blue dots I bought forever ago. I was going to do the impala lights.
I had seen the same thing about the hot riders using them to try to evade police then they were made illegal in the sixties but people would use them anyway as an act of defiance against the government I.e. outlaw dots but also was used in really foggy areas because the purple would shine through the fog kinda like yellow fog lights but not much more info about that love the video man keep it up
I’ve got more videos coming on this car soon. We already have a new Lokar shifter, I ordered a new hole saw kit and some air saw blades so I can do the installation. It’s something we should’ve done way before now.
An old hotroder from the 50's told me they put the blue dot on because of the 6 volts lights was not that bright. The real blue dot where made from glass and where shaped too.. Some where shape like diamonds and some like a lens from lighthouse .

You never mentioned your name, but if Brian, Thank you Brian! Commentor seemed to know your name! Anyhow, I've a 1954 Mainline Coupe. It is totally original and Betsy Lu was willed to me. 66,902 miles. First bulb outage to my knowledge. The screws came out nicely, BUT, the lens didn't want to come out. I didn't wanna force it! Should I use a small rubber hammer, and tunk it lightly? I was afraid. LOL. Left rear! Thanks again.
Thank you! It must be factory-stuck to the underlying cork. I'll hit my finger in-between the rubber hammer and Betsy Lu's tail for safety.
New lenses are available for these and aren’t expensive. I understand wanting to keep it all original. But I will say new lenses increase bulb brightness. I’m going off of memory, but I think you can put the screws back in and pop the bulb holder out of the housing from inside the trunk. It can be difficult to get things this old apart and requires a firm but gentle touch. Yes, my name is Brian, thanks for watching and commenting. I work nights and I’m currently at work, I will try to remember to look when I get home in the morning to see if my memory is correct on removing the bulb.
