  • In this video I guide you through updating the BIOS and EC firmware to the latest version on a Stone branded laptop. Clevo and Stone laptops are basically the same - so these steps should apply to both brands. The laptop shown in this video is a Stone NT310-H with the model number W550SU1.
I am updating the BIOS of this laptop in order to better support the latest models of CPU / processors that were available in this chipset series (Intel Haswell, Core i3 / i5 / i7 4th Gen).
This gives a better chance that an upgraded CPU will 'just work without issue' in the motherboard but does NOT guarantee compatibility.
I will be making another video where I try to install a Core i5 4210M quad core processor as an upgrade from the current Intel Celeron 2950M that was factory fitted plus a MSATA SSD drive.
Processor upgrade video: • Upgrading The CPU On A...
M.2 MSATA SSD install video: • How To Install An M.2 ...
These steps will be very similar for most models of Stone or Clevo branded laptop but please check the manufacturers website BIOS update page and confirm the steps plus file names for yourself. If done incorrectly a failed BIOS update can brick motherboards and render them irreparable.
    WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
    - The laptop you are going to be updating the BIOS of
    - A USB Stick / Thumb Drive - Virtually any size will do (so long as your BIOS files and FreeDOS fit on it)
    SOFTWARE DOWNLOADS:
    - RUFUS Software (To make your bootable FreeDOS USB stick)
    rufus.ie/
Here is the BIOS update page I referenced on the Stone Computers website.
    kb.stonegroup.co.uk/index.php...
NOTE: THIS PAGE IS SPECIFIC TO THIS LAPTOP MODEL - DO NOT USE the files on this page if your laptop is not the exact same model and brand as mine. You should instead find the relevant update download for your model instead on the manufacturers website.
All laptops do vary and you may or may-not have a boot menu enabled, If you don't have/can't get into a boot menu you will have to change the boot order in the BIOS setup instead.
Usually for Stone branded laptops they will have a boot menu which can be accessed by pressing F7. You can usually access the BIOS using the F2 key as well. The manufacturer website for your specific laptop model should specify this.

Great tutorial, I'd just advise against force shutting down your computer by holding down power button during the boot phase. To avoid potential data corruption, better wait for it to boot up and do a regular soft restart or shutdown.

Hi Nathan. This video is wonderful. However my secure boot control is greyed out and platform mode states ‘setup’
    On the boot tab -
    OS select is greyed out.
Any ideas on how I can solve this please.

Hi Nathan, I am on my Stone Laptop NT 310 and after updating the bios, would it be possible to upgrade the cpu from Intel core i5 3230M dual core (2.60ghz) to Intel core i7 4790k (3.60ghz)? Will the motherboard support it? as it is an Haswell processor.

Hi there, Sorry for the late response. I have just seen your comment.
You can't install an i7-4790k as this is a desktop processor. Laptops use a different socket and form factor, they are much smaller and consume a LOT less power. Haswell refers to the generation and architecture (4th Gen) be it desktop or laptop form factor. It's basically like the 'series' or 'family'.
You could likely only install an i7 4712MQ at 2.3GHz but these are generally really expensive / overpriced - if you can find one at all.
See the datasheet on the Intel ARK website here: ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/78933/intel-core-i7-4712mq-processor-6m-cache-up-to-3-30-ghz.html
Hope this response is somewhat helpful but probably not the news you hoped for.
Glad to hear you got the BIOS updated OK though!

@@NathanPH Hi Nathan! I am so glad you responded, I now know much more about, cpus and chipsets but I would like to know one more thing: Can cpus compatible with the Stone NT 310 model be also compatible with the Stone NT 310-H model, for example, would I be able to put an Intel core I7 3612MQ into a Stone NT 310-H if I wanted to upgrade its CPU?
