I Bought 11 BROKEN PS Portals - Can I Fix Them?! I've never worked on a PS Portal before so we'll be learning about them together. Already I know that new replacement parts aren't available which will make repairs harder - especially for damaged thumbsticks. But these are each worth about $160-180 used so hopefully I can get a good number repaired.

The fact that you are going through chemo and still make these videos and have the patience and calmness than you have shows just how good and steady handed you are.
chemo effing sucks man! been there! If you start to have severe bone pain taking Clartin can help. Sounds crazy I know ! bone pain is no joke during chemo omg. Keep kickin' ass dude!
@@roostermbakb6727 I agree, I’m super happy to see you making it happen. Good luck to you sir
He’s in remission! He’s gotten passed the worst of it! Steve is amazing and so strong!
This is totally true! I had pretty bad bone pain the first round (I took Claritin but not enough) but figured out a good Claritin dosage for all the other rounds and it wasn’t too bad.
Get well soon man .. keep ur hopes up high and always believe u can fight this monster of illness and I know for a fact that u can win .. anyway hope to see one day a video on this channel that announce ur recovery .. keep it up man :) have a nice day ^^
Is that hair I see coming back in? That makes me so happy! After my sister finished chemo, her hair came back really curly when it had been straight before. It's apparently pretty common for hair to come back with a different texture than before, along with it possibly even changing color.
Great video and I look forward to seeing you heal back to your healthy self! 💜
Yeah, my hair is coming back in already. It actually never completely stopped growing, just got patchy so I kept it shaved. This video was filmed weeks ago and it's coming in pretty good now.
@@Tronicsfix That's fantastic. Seriously so happy for you and your family. 😊
@@Tronicsfix I don't know if they told you Steve but When I went through chemo they told me that your hair can grow back differently and after I had chemo and a bone marrow transplant my hair was originally dark brown and straight and then it grew in light brown and curly Lol, It was temporary until all my head grew out and it went back to normal.
You know, I could see Steve with a Bob Ross hair doo. There's no mistakes just happy little fixable consoles...

It was you who got me into repairs, because of you I have a whole drawer FULL of like a hundred Nintendo Ds's, and like 20 gamecubes in my room. I buy everything broken, then just fix it and end up saving money on products and whenever my stuff breaks I know how to fix it because of you! Thank you so much for having fun and informative videos on repair!
Did you learn how to do it just from watching his vids or did you have to watch other tutorials?
@@AKATSUKIROBES Basically he inspired me for the most part, and I learned as I went. Omg, I haven’t checked in for a while and wondered why you have a shaved head until I read your community post. You’ve taught me a lot about repairs over the years, and I’m very grateful for that. My heartfelt condolences, and I wish you all the strength and hope you feel better soon. Thank you for still making videos ❤️🍀.
24:13 The "grooves" are designed so that the metal tab bends from the right place. If it was straight, without the narrow bit, the bending could happen in different spot and that's not good for tight fit.
The narrowing does mean it's the weakest point and metal fatigue will be an issue in repeated openings but it's "not perfect but the best we can do" sort of thing.
Yep, that makes sense.
That groove is standard when bending metal. Not only it makes sure the part bends where it needs to bend but also makes the corner of the bend not stick out and sit flush. That is how you bend metal with precision.
The issue is the metal they used is either sintered (cheaper but nowhere near as strong as the real deal) or the wrong type, purposely selected so that it breaks. If they used more pliable metals - like aluminium (which is plenty strong for such tiny parts) or copper (more expensive) or the right type of steel (softer, preferably Zinc coated), it would be the toughest part of that thumbstick and would never break. Hell, if they put bigger locking tabs on the side and just used plastic for the metal part, it would work as well.
As it is right now, it is blatantly obvious it is a case of planned obsolescence. It gets me furious, because we get restricted from using plastic bags in grocery stores to "save the planet" but something like this will cause an otherwise perfectly working electronic device to go straight to the landfill... What a waste of a working screen, electronic components with precious metals inside and a bunch of electricity to produce all of this... All because of a tiny clip, it is ridiculous.
@@tusux2949 or if they'd just drop a shipment of those cheap metal plates on the free market, so you can just beak the tabs and replace what is realistically a max 2 cent metal plate.
If companies decide to make parts cheap and single use, they should at least just (allow their partners to) sell them...
Steve, you inspire me and many others! Stay strong brother!

Hey thanks!
I've watched your videos for a few years now, always enjoyed them from the start. My mom was recently diagnosed with skin cancer. Seeing you power through it like the unstoppable machine you are gives me a lot of hope.
I enjoyed your content before, but now your videos help me cope. Hope to see more soon.
I fell in love with your channel a long time ago, you are the only tinkering/repair channel I watch. You’re a freaking rockstar
I had the curly hair syndrome too!, had stem cell transplant and a total of about 4 months in two hospitals as an inpatient with an initial maximum 5 year expectation of life if no treatment, and less than 40% chance of things succeeding at all! i was really waiting this video, i really love the architecture of the Portal and i LOVE using it everyday almost, especially now that i am far from home, this is a game changer and it works super fine.
I’m treating this like a treasure because of how fragile it may be so, remember guys to clean the Portal and if you want to travel around with it, put it in a Laptop-like soft case inside a bag so it won’t get hit by accident.
I wish I had half your skill, youre a legend Steve!
That thumbstick issue with it coming off the track is such a common issue on these. I had this issue and had to get a warranty replacement after only 2 months! This video really helps if this happens to me again!
I just read your blog and I am glad you doing better. All good vibes your way.
One of my favorite Can I fix it, so far! Nice job, Steve!
I was thinking of getting one of these. Glad to know the majority of the problems are with the moving parts only. I'll wait for repairability before getting one
Or maybe wait at least until you can get replacement analog sticks.
Great video as always!
Glad you enjoyed!

great vid tronics
I know in California they passed a Right to Repair bill that is fairly decent IMO. One of the huge issues is the ESA was able to get game consoles exempt from R2R which absolutely sucks.
I would like to see training be included as part of the Right to Repair campaign. Having a right is meaningless if someone is unable to exercise it.
I, for example, have literally no technical skills, tools, or even a proper workspace. Without these things, a Right to Repair my own devices is of no value to me.
@@williamharris8367 That will happen on its own faster than any legeslative change
Right to repair means they cannot prevent you from aquiring the skills and parts anymore :
Manuals and shcematics are now fair play and cannot be "sued away" for copyright infringement anymore
Neither can they prevent you from buying parts from sellers : See Apple siezing legit parts/defective units at customs cause they have the apple logo on them. They have to prove counterfeit and trademark misuse intent to get them
Why would they pass a law if consoles are not included in this law? That's outrageously crazy.😢
Oh my god ! That’s is so unfortunate and sad ! Hope you get well man ! I am watching for years now and seeing you like this makes me very sad. Your videos are interesting and fun. Good health to you man

I'm done with treatments and I'm in complete remission!
So good to hear this!
Sony needs a lawsuit or something. those sticks are clearly junk and not even tested proper. so most will proberly fail
That ate Normal sticks and the elements are Seminar to the sticks in the joycon.
The are Not Design to Opel and repair.
Its cheaper to replace them
It probably doesn't help that a lot of people are trying to play quick twitch type of games I see a lot of people in Reddit doing that with the systems.
Those type of games like call of Duty or fighting games are pretty brutal on a regular controller and people are trying to do this with a portable controller with smaller joysticks..
I've had mine for 6 months no issues I play single player games 95% of the time You might catch me in helldivers or maybe final fantasy 14 online but other than that those other games I save for my controller when I'm at home.
I am so proud of you still doing these videos even after getting treatment … get well and be strong

I wonder what this liquid is... him spraying 2 the analog stick 2 minutes before XD I got the same memory as you, literally a gold fish! Love your content :)
@@zaborg17 the electronic contact cleaner evaporates itself at room temperature in some seconds. Probably the líquid was grease for the contact
The liquid was grease that they put inside the analog stick to keep them lubricated.
@Tronicsfix yeah they use it on cordless tools on the trigger switch I think bosch started the trend.
@@Tronicsfix i saw it later on the second stick, sorry if i seemed rude on the comment, didn’t mean to :(
Hey Steve, I just looked on Amazon and AliExpress and it seems they do have replacement sticks for the PS Portal. 😊
Indeed, they are selling hall effect triggers for it, I'm guessing the originals are also hall effect ones. The price is marginally justifiable, considering how expensive the broken ones were
The original are resistance Stick. You can see that on the contacts that move on the Black surface. The same sticks like the Normal in the switch joycon
Hello, I have occasionally watched the videos on the channel and I had not seen you in this state of health, I hope everything goes well and you recover soon. A big hug from Chile. 💪💪💪💪
Hey Tronic, get well man. my best wishes to you and your family. Thxx for all the videos
$180 used for something that costs $199.99 new...
Supply and demand, I guess
That's how a lot of things are these days. I don't understand it.
Same thing with steam decks. People buying for more than new, and they are available.
The time just to diagnose the issue is worth more than the $20 saved, let alone the cost of parts, the wait time for the parts to be delivered, and the time spent actually fixing it.
Even used in reported working condition isn't worth a 10% or less discount to me. If I'm spending 90% already, that last bit is worth knowing there won't be an issue.
I would pay the extra 40 bucks and just have the manufacturer warranty or store return.
Eleven?! Good gravy
Yep, I've seen more for sale in lots like this too. Not sure how widespread these issues are but they seem to affect quite a few of them based on my Google searches.
Great fixes, Steve. Shame about the ones you can’t get parts for, but hopefully they will be available somehow soon.
Yeah, that's what I'm hoping.

I didn't even know these things existed
They are useless unless you have a PS5 that's always connected to your homes wifi it only streams games from your PS5 console. And you need good wifi if ur using it out and about.
I preordered it and probably played it for half an hour. The latency makes it almost unplayable I’ve had it sitting in the box since. Wonder if I could make some money selling it to niche ps fans in a couple years lol
I haven't seen any posts from you about your condition, if you've even made any.

All respect and support for you man i hope you get better soon
It's disgusting that manufacturers create products in such a way that they are nearly impossible to open and repair properly, and that there are no spare parts available.
I know, they suck
First thing to that comes to mind when I think of impossible to get into are PS3 controllers and new generation iPhones.
PS5 pro controller should be the standard when it comes to being able to fix our things. Just make the parts modular.
I know some people aren't as tech savvy when it comes to self repair but if it was just easier to remove and replace parts that wouldn't be a problem.
@@Kakeen I'd imagine simply whispering "modular" anywhere near the vicinity of Sony HQ (or any large corpo for that matter) would be enough to get you kicked out of the door. It's a surefire way to make things repairable and last longer. It would also mean more profits for them if they sold the replacement parts but that also means more work for them and they figure it would be just as good to try to sell you another unit when yours break.. But then the question is why buy something in the first place if you know it is built to fail asap? The more they push the failure state to happen sooner, the more it will backfire in sales. This Portal case seems like it's past the " do not buy" line for me already.
I was surprised by the design of the PS5 pro controller because of this. Maybe its a way for them to test the waters and see how profitable it is that way. But it also costs a lot more for us than the regular one.... I am really tired of all those mindgames already, to the point of only buying things I absolutely need and only if they are of decent quality (or the cheapest ones if the quality cannot be confirmed). The trust that products will last at least their warranty period and buying blindly is long gone.
Thats why i didnt buy it. It is made to break
It's not that hard if you have a bit of practice. Just get started fixing things, they all tend to have similar processes. And it is satisfying to diagnose and fix them
You should buy a 3D printer so you can make the parts you need
Yo, saw the comment and literally got tears seeing this, im not the biggest fan thats for sure, but u make amazing contect, seeing you like this really broke my heart, idk whats wrong with u rn but im sure ull get through it, best of luck Tron💞

i still cant see why this product exists
Rpg machine for the ps5 is the only use that a can thing off
Sony wants more money.
It's pretty simple. Some that has kids using the TV, watch sports while playing, watch steamers, etc. it's not that hard to comprehend why they exist and they are the best selling game accessory year to date so looks like a lot of people are buying Portals 😊
@@DiggetyDank kids ,wife life my guy a way to sneak in some play time
@@smeepUCAthey are so popular that I have never heard of them until now …lol

Device from 2023 and Sony still didn't learn that material scratching in analogs causes that it will damage over time. I know they had to cut price, but still, oh god.
IKR, an extra tenner and slap some decent HALLs in them.
@@GriotDNB ... Is "Hall" an acronym?
Planned obsolescence. Using scraping potentiometers and sheet metal which will always break. Hall effect sticks are on the market for YEARS now and they are still not using it.
@@12Cortana Most likely, and unfortunatelly, you are right.

I guess their company belief is Don't make it repairable or don't make the parts available so that way they could just sell more new units.
