    Worked great for me on an old Optiplex 990. Note that if your BIOS is *really* old then you may have to upgrade in steps. I had to go from A5 to A10 and then from A10 to A24. The release notes on the Dell site explain this. In both rounds I had to wait several minutes for "Waiting for Intel(R) ME firmware to complete" to finish. Thanks v much.

      @@MB-yw7up I had a quick look to see if needed extracted before or something. According to the documentation the BIOS Update is supposed to support DOS, it may be because you are attempting to downgrade although usually it downgrades without issue. I'm not sure what else you can try.

    What does it mean when I run the BIOS*.exe file and it presents the first question of "Do you wish to continue (y/n)?" I type "y".

    Optiplex 790, A10 bios revision, using unetbootin - exactly per these instructions. Drops me into an A: prompt, with no files from the USB shown. Minor differences in getting it to boot, legacy mode, only USB set to boot, no HD installed (the entire reason I need to update the bios)

    Wish I had known about this earlier, I nuked my Arch Linux install with Windows XP so that I could update my BIOS on an Inspiron 1501. It's all good now though, I'll never have a BIOS update again since that PC is so old, and now it's running Gentoo.

      @@FrancoFrames This is one of the first systems with a UEFI BIOS so I guess UEFI settings weren't as refined on it as later models. I see on the forums some similar issues for that model but no solutions. You may have to actually install Windows 7 and use Windows 7 to perform the BIOS update.

    Philip, I tried this 10 more times. You went through a part so fast while you.discussed somethimg.that Intel or someone is doing to their chip. I don't care about any of that. What was the file you put on the drive after you used Rufus? Why does your drive have 'Locale' only when mine has some 'autorun' files. Were any.of these extracted? When I.get to the screen after the boot, I typed in the name of.the bios and it returned that DOS couldn't run that type of file. Most other files return 'BAD COMMAND OR FILE NAME'. Why is it a bad name when I'm looking at it right there in the file directory?

    • @philipyip1988
      @philipyip1988  3 роки тому +1

      The file you download is model specific. For the Dell models tested you should be able to download the .EXE directly. There should be no need to extract the file. You can see more details in the written guide: dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/updating-your-bios-from-a-freedos-bootable-usb/

    It must be nice to have several working computers, everything working and no questions. I would like to see you slide through that so easy with the crap I have, programs that for some reason react or do anything like the ones you use, and try and make a living off repairing computers that do nothing like what yours do in the video. Meanwhile, I'm seeing my career slide down the tubes while you effortlessly glide through menus breezing past items that I've spent weeks trying to get to work. I beat my printer into little pieces today with my hands out of frustration. There is blood and little pieces of glass and plastic everywhere.

    I'm so tired of watching this video and it seems so easy, yet my results are so much not like that. For two weeks I've been trying everything, watching videos, reading, calling people,.and nothing. I've done this on an old Dell before. For some reason none of this works.
