This song came out when I started senior high school, and has remained a favourite ever since. The '90s was probably the concluding decade of soulful music, classic music videos, and purposeful lyrics/writing.
Actually the bed of flowers was to hide Phyllis Hyman size. I have watched many interviews and they tried to hide her alot in this video.. In the purple and that high hairstyle all upper shots only one shot full body and that was a quick shot...So I believe they were trying to her her body under the Flowers.. I love her no matter what but back then they did not celebrate curves like they glorify it now.. Blessings to anyone reading this!! Also.. Happy Birthday Phyllis
...this tune, was Phyllis' ONLY #1 hit, on ANY chart Sept. 1991...she didn't even hit #1 with, "You Know How To Love Me"! ...let's celebrate her peak, by looking back on the R&B charts.... Thank you, I'm a great fan of her but I actually prefer other songs...maybe I have to listen this one another time... It's "commercial" compared to her other ones.
Also it's odd I never heard of it nor I saw this videoclip instead even to these days it happens to hear Lenny Kravitz even if he had a #10 on this chart 🤷🏽♀️
Forever a queen, her music makes me emotional all the time its hard to get through a sitting without welling up. She passed when I was only a little baba, wished she lived so I could see her live.
Phyllis - what can we say ... WOW! So versatile .... I think Phyllis missed out on a big part of the 80's/90's 'dance-scene' - which seems utterly ridiculous!!! What an ability!!! Utterly charming! Great communicator!! Language & expression!! Beautiful!!! Her untapped ability to write (more) song!!! A total sensation! Rest in peace, accomplished Ms Hyman xx
@@angeluvsvid I guess it's the same in every area of life .... The great illusion of 'free-speech' and 'Democracy' - they like you until you start getting too honest ... But, having said that writing songs is definitely an creative outlet for truths to-be-told! I think also, that a lot of artists give away their own-power - when signed to a label .... and they just expect the record company WILL do 'an excellent job for them - the artist' and sadly this is definitely NOT the case!! I mean they had Kelly Clarkeson singing 'grunge' - that is crazy!! Kelly (who can sing Aretha-F) was/is anything but grunge .... The same too with the-great Phyllis - I think her voice missed a huge opportunity in the soul-dance-music scene .... which had a better energy for Phyllis Hymen to be part of ... None-the-less - Phillis' ability was exceptional .... xx
The queen when I tell you the first time I seen her was in School Daze ,and I fell in love with her , ever since. I’m not going to go into why she doesn’t have movies or documentaries or Why she receives no homage. so I will do it Clyve Davis you have so much karma coming any way. her voice was a silk musk on a summer day smooth as cream. her beauty was sublime before Whitney there was Phyllis Hyman. listen to somewhere in my lifetime , living all alone , be one , old friends her delivery and pain in her songs is tangible. this woman is the vocal bible she was touched by god. I do not get chills from the new R&b girls. Phyllis have me chills and still somewhere in my lifetime that long run at the end 😪.I have no words I wish she could have received her flowers so here Phyllis we love you rest up queen. 👑 🌹🌸💐🌺🌷🥀 those who truly know good music will never and will not forget you with that voice how could we she was the voice. Her Florence Ballard snd Angela bofill will always live thru me this industry depleted so many of are artist it’s sad.
This was the year when Phyllis first attempted to take her life, but woke up in hospital happy to be alive. Her final attempt was planned even down to explicitly instructing her staff not to wake her until after a certain time thus insuring they'd find her gone.
@@bonepicker1 I feel her pain, i've been agoraphobic for 20 years, also have no friends due to social anxiety, i will have nobody to wake me, even if i die of natural causes, nobody will find me for weeks or months. This is my reality. Not to harness sympathy. Phyllis was in a very dark place, but her decision to end her life, must have been like freedom from the pain, even for a very short moment.
Phyllis Hyman music goes past 2099. I love this beautiful lady and I'm so sorry that she's gone 🤦🏻♀️💎🦄🎉🥰📺📽️ it doesn't matter the time frame to say you love someone.

OK I WILL LIKE TO SAY SOMETHING ABOUT THE VIDEO, FIRST OFF I WANT TO SAY I REMEMBER THIS VIDEO WHEN I WAS A KID AND I THOUGHT PHYLLIS WAS BEAUTIFUL ESPECIALLY WITH THE LONG HAIR SCENE SURROUNDED BY FLOWERS 💐. NOW I KNOW THAT IT WAS TO COVER UP HER WEIGHT FROM ANOTHER COMMENTATOR. THAT’S WHY YOU SEE THE SHORT CLIPS OF HER FACE OR LAYING IN THE BED OF FLOWERS. BACK THEN I KNOW SOCIETY WAS VERY TOUGH ON FEMALES WEIGHT ESPECIALLY IN THE INDUSTRY. NOW WE HAVE LIZZO AND SHE IS BREAKING THOSE CRITICIZING WALLS DOWN AND I AM HAPPY ABOUT THAT. AT FIRST I THOUGHT IT WAS STRANGE FOR HER TO HAVE THOSE FLOWERS 💐 AROUND HER LIKE SHE WAS IN A CASKET OR SOMETHING BUT NOW I UNDERSTAND. YES SHE DOES REMIND YOU OF A TALL BEYONCÉ DOESN’T SHE? ESPECIALLY IN THIS MUSIC VIDEO! 😢HOW I FEEL SO SAD FOR PHYLLIS, IT SEEM LIKE SHE WANTED TO BE LOVED, TO READ THAT SHE LOST THE PEOPLE SHE HAD A BOND WITH TRULY IS HARD TO GO ON IN LIFE WITHOUT THEM AND THE OTHER ISSUES SHE HAD. SHE WILL ALWAYS BE REMEMBERED WITH HER BEAUTIFUL LOOKS, HER TALL STATUE AND HER PHENOMENAL VOICE ❤
Phyllis cut 8 LPs within 18 years on 3 record labels, with the final 3 via PIR: her debut album on Buddah, Phyllis Hyman in 1977; 4 on Arista: 1979s Somewhere In My Lifetime and You Know How To Love Me, 1981s Can We Fall In Love Again?, '83s Goddess Of Love; the Philly International Records sets are: 1986s Living All Alone, '91s Prime Of My Life, and lastly (and sadly), she started to write I Refuse To Be Lonely in May '93 after the tragic passing of her friend, Linda Creed, her mother and grandmother; eventually, she entered into a downward spiral, seeking solace in food, booze and drugs, only to fix the pain momentarily; in April '95, she was in concert with Regina Belle; scaring the Hell out of her, by having 2 books on the table and mentioning death, until, eventually, a hot, steamy Friday afternoon in June: the 30th, to be precise! As I would eventually wind up in the Men's Shelter around Phyllis's 46th bday, 7/6/95 (she arrived in 1949 in Philadelphia and the family moved to Pittsburgh afterwards!), Aunt Fredella had told me, "Terrence Allen, your girlfriend had just committed suicide"-when I heard Phyllis Hyman, I cried and cried; but she's in Hell burning forever: The Lord says it best, "Whosoever shall conduct self murder, shall NOT be forgiven; not in this world, nor the next world to come"! I mentioned it to Aunt Fredella, and she laughed at me, repeating, "Y'all, Terrence is crazy; he don't know what he's talking about"-so be it, then!!
She was such a beautiful woman. Does anyone know why they hid her in the shadows and never really showed her full body in the video? Was it the weight gain?
