I'm here listening to meet me on the moon and I tell you you most CERTAINLY can feel her pain. Her loneliness. She KNEW she couldn't CONTROL the world n those in it. Yet she could DO something bout NOT feeling that PAIN anymore. This sister is very VERY DEEP. On a level MANY can not relate or can but don't want to confess their truth. Bout vulnerabilities bout NOT being understood and many claim they can relate and do Nothing except make u feel invisible. & yet once again ALONE.

I discovered Phyllis in 1987 when I was attending Robert Morris College. I remember watching BET as a young white Pittsburgh suburban gay male, and saw this video on Video Soul with Donnie Simpson. My love for 80's & 90's R & B/Soul started then. All those great songs kept my morning bus ride into the city for class a time I fondly remember. I fell in love with her voice. Little did I know years later that Phyllis grew up Pittsburgh. So sad that she had so much pain. A voice like that spoke to so many people. RIP beautiful Phyllis! Thank you for helping my young gay white soul to emerge and learn about such wonderful music.

Unfortunately there was no "fame" because "crossover" queens became the rage across the country, even with black people. And there was no $$$ either. Trust me, I know this and knew Phyllis personally. I remember asking after a show "Where's your sax player and back-up singers?". Her reply? "I can't afford them". What was left out of the snippet of her suicide note was "and the IRS can kiss my a**". I know this too.

It takes someone who truly loves deeply to not just sing a song, but to feel the words and express them in a way that you feel every emotion that they sing. My skin still tingles to this day listening to her songs. And if you love that deeply, it means that you risk being hurt that deeply. I hate that she fought demons that she couldn't win and sought comfort or peace in alcohol and drugs. She was oh so talented, and never really recognized in the music world the way she should have been. Maybe because of how she suffered. Mental health issues weren't dealt with the same in that era as they are now, and there is still so much negative stigma in the black community about mental health. I'm so glad her music has found it's way to streaming platforms. I remember when I first heard "Meet Me On The Moon". I said if I ever get married, it will be the song I walk down the aisle to.

I met Angela Bofill in 1996 briefly backstage then we and others headed over to a Detroit restaurant afterward. Angela mentioned about Phyllis' death as "truly sad" then mentioned "Clive went out diva shopping and came back with me and Phyllis". Hilarious. Say what you want about Clive Davis but "the man with the golden ears" certainly had them. Then along came Whitney for the golden parachute and, well, the rest is history.
