Here in 2024! Can't stop watching her! Just found out about her. Her name should be as well known as Whitney's. Personally, I think she's better than Whitney - more soul.
The great thing about Phyllis is that she soars in her lows just as much as she does in her highs. Most singers these these days are conditioned to always go for the strong high note all the time. That's why everyone sings alike now.
I have this song on one of Phyllis Hyman C.D.'s. There are so many people struggling with depression in silence. Growing old and living all alone doesn't help. I am still listening to this song, February 29, 2024.
2 words - breath taking. Doble entrende. First she captivates you with her beauty then she holds you captive with her voice. I bet she broke many hearts.
You're so right! I never thought about it exactly that way before, but she really DID match her voice with the music around her on each song. Thanks for putting into words yet another part of her amazing talent that I had never thought to say before!
you better believe it! she was the tops. A true individual. The voice, the musicality, the emotion, it's HER. It's part of her, an extension, not just a surface thing, it's literally her pouring out herself for us.
Every time I listen to her sing this I get chills. Miss You......Alot of People still playing this. This was the best tv performance ever. You will never be forgotten
I love her voice and her vocal phrasing, she was so talented and beautiful. Phylllis was not a belter, this lady can sing in control of her voice! Very talented and extremely beautiful lady. Always appreciated and NEVER forgotten! Not ever!
Rob Thompson more of a jazz interpretive vocalist than an r&b belter. But still very versatile. Like Bette Midler. She could change her voice to fit the song or style
Chris Coyne she also had perfect pitch but what I find so appealing is how emotive her voice was.... when she closes her eyes during the chorus you can tell she's absorbing the feeling of the song and pulling from the heart
Phyllis Hyman was the headliner for the annual President's Concert at Grambling State University back in 1991. I was a sophomore and blown away by the fact that I had a front row seat at this concert. I thoroughly enjoyed the show and vowed to see her again when I graduated and earned my own money. Little did I know that this was truly a once in a lifetime experience.
Love & miss you Phyllis 🙏🏽 I will always listen to your music. I had to get your vinyl and found it in a thrift 🙏🏽 I'm so grateful. Sing on Phyllis in heaven to our glorious lord and Savior. You must be leading the angels in heaven to sing for our Jesus 🙏🏽📿🐑😘❤️
Wow this brought tears to my eyes.Pure raw talent and Gorgeous is an understatement. O how I wish Ms Hyman could've felt the love we all had for her then and now for her to still be here.Never will she be forgotten💕💕
She had it all plus the passion is off the charts. Gorgeous woman and so talented. Why do these ppl leave us early every time. It is so sad. God bless u Phyllis.
Yo, she killed this. Best version of this cover. And you can tell she was feelin' it with that little Michael Jackson-esque moment at the end around 03:07.
Landed here after hearing Bobby Caldwell has died and wondering if other artists covered his songs. It turns out not just any "other artists." Phyllis Hyman!
she struggled with bi-polar and depression, and also had a hard time with meeting the man to spend her life with; the was treated very bad by the men she encountered. she is a gifted sistah, beautiful and was very sensitive also when it came to caring for others.
Why? One of the most attractive women I've ever set eyes on and could she sing, you bet she could. In a class of her own but like so many of them sadly no longer with us. Unbelievably talented.
She looked very happy on this performance.... Her mannerisms said that she was living what she sang about on this particular video.. Love Phyllis Hyman.
"my friends wonder what is wrong with me".....love this cover, RIP Phyllis - saw here sing Old Friend in a small Chicago jazz club in early 90's- not a dry eye in the house...iconic.
So many years later I can still see this woman and my still heart races and my eyes well-up. There will never be another quite like Ms. Phyllis! She will always be in my heart!
I always felt she had a little Nancy Wilson in her voice, very jazz sultry like of vibe. She was so beautiful. We certainly didn't get enough time with her, but what she gave to us was Top Shelf all the way. Bless her Soul.
Phyllis adored Nancy and felt "If you can't sing like Nancy, why bother?". Nancy also adored Phyllis and said, "She had the best pipes". They were great friends and actually had brunch or lunch together on Father's Day before Phyllis left us. Watch the Essence Awards video here on UA-cam with Phyllis and Melba Moore singing Superwoman to honor Gladys Knight. If you blink you might miss is right at the beginning of the clip but Nancy Wilson is in the audience. The whole problem was.....they were trying to make Phyllis a Paula Abdul or Martha Wash and not let her follow in Nancy's footsteps as she was meant to.
Phyllis, Phyllis, Phyllis . . . a rare talent and a sensual, statuesque beauty, why didn't she realize how special she was to so many of us? Incomparable.
I feel so fortunate to have seen Phyllis perform live nine times. A friend introduced me to her music in the late 70s around the same time as Jean Carne and Angela Bofill. Phyllis brought me through so much in life with her sultry, vocals unlike anyone else. I saw her last at SOBs in NYC a few months before she took her life. My friend and I cried like babies as if a part of us was now missing. I loved her so much and still do, sometimes dreaming of her performing. I just pray like so many here that she's no longer in pain but is giving voice lessons to the angels. Thanks for posting this.
I saw this performance the night it aired and Phyllis totally blew me away. Thanks so much for this upload. I hope she's found the peace that eluded her on this earth.
As much as I love the original by Bobby Caldwell, I LIVE for this version by Ms Phyliss Hyman. This world is a shade darker without the light of her voice, soul & being.
On this day the world lost an angel when Phyllis Hyman ended her life, my heart bleeds at such a loss, the singer, songwriter, actress will always be cherished in my heart, big big loss
I know Bobby Caldwell was proud!! RIP Phyllis Hyman & Bobby Caldwell
these chicks today couldn't touch these ladies from the early 80's 90's and 70's
Marquies Simmons Too true. Now it's all dancers in the background and videos. Today's singers aren't true vocalists as in the past.
+ifluvinguiswrong I agree I don't have to mention any names
Some vocalist sing, but Phylis took you there, brought you back, made you a night cap and put you to bed.
Marquies Simmons Hell No classic singers would sing circles around them
Marquies Simmons Say what Phyllis 1:52 to 1:53 SANG!!!
Phyllis was different. She isn't singing, it's much more than that. She is pouring out her heart for us.
That's what you are supposed to do. So many don't...
Well said!
💯
You're an idiot, proof that fandom makes you stupid
She was special. She was unmatched. She was in her own class.
Her voice control was surreal. Genius.
say that !
icecraz3 Never before and never again will there be a voice like hers.
Rafael Storm Love Phyllis' voice, even she admitted how much she did sound like Nancy Wilson, who conceded her style was influenced by Jimmy Scott....
***** I don't disagree... Nancy Wilson's sound is too a variant of Jimmy Scott.
***** I'm a big admirer of Wilson as well, and I hear no similarity in their voices or styles.
still listening to Phyllis Hyman in 2023!!! there will never be another like her!!
2024 and beyond. R.I.P. to this beautiful soul...
Still listening in 2024!
Here in 2024! Can't stop watching her! Just found out about her. Her name should be as well known as Whitney's. Personally, I think she's better than Whitney - more soul.
yes yes yes
Phyllis truly had a style of her own she is Miss
I can watch over & over & have for years & never get tired .
The great thing about Phyllis is that she soars in her lows just as much as she does in her highs. Most singers these these days are conditioned to always go for the strong high note all the time. That's why everyone sings alike now.

2024 Still here🎉
2024 still here. The greatest singer ever!
I feel fortunate to have seen Phyllis perform about 8 times most at the Blue Note in Manhattan..what a voice
2 words - breath taking.
Doble entrende. First she captivates you with her beauty then she holds you captive with her voice. I bet she broke many hearts.
This is what I call REAL singing. Every note has pitch, tune and flow that goes well with the melody being played. She truly sings exceptionally well.
You're so right! I never thought about it exactly that way before, but she really DID match her voice with the music around her on each song. Thanks for putting into words yet another part of her amazing talent that I had never thought to say before!

Rob Thompson better than scritcha aretha
Her phrasing, styling, inflections, is everything
1:10 my fav inflection on that song. Phyllis somethin else
And this is why I say there are no pop divas to look up to because nobody has this level of talent in the game…
Love her. Amazing vocalist.

SANG PHYLLIS with your bad ass self. No one sounds as good as Phyllis - such a unique and beautifully haunting voice. sigh
There will NEVER BE ANOTHER like Phyllis Hyman. Her voice brings tears to my eyes. Rest in heaven Phyllis. You are truly missed.
Now that's a performance! Just so natural and raw!
Why did she leave us?
@@juanitaerrico975because dealing with and living in this world is so tiresome. After so long, your soul just gets tired.
Wow this brought tears to my eyes.Pure raw talent and Gorgeous is an understatement. O how I wish Ms Hyman could've felt the love we all had for her then and now for her to still be here.Never will she be forgotten💕💕
I often say the same thing about this beautiful, talented woman. If she could only feel the LOVE we have for her.
Billions of electric shocks goes thru me listening to her!! Omg
She was the best and nobody can touch her vocals
She had it all plus the passion is off the charts. Gorgeous woman and so talented. Why do these ppl leave us early every time. It is so sad. God bless u Phyllis.
True. But sadly we see such Human Jewels leave us early again and again. 🧡☀️🎵🎶👍
She turned this completely OUT!!!
I might like it more than the original 😂💛
Close 2nd. Bobby owned it.

REST IN PEACE BOBBY!❤ and Phyllis Hyman!❤
Yes, there's something about a sexy contralto voice. Brings another one that to mind that left the limelight too soon. That would be, Sade.
Phyllis Hyman was a beautifully stunning woman and very talented, and stylish.
Goodness gracious. Chills. I love her so much.
Beautiful and talented women Phyllis sure was she is still missed after 21 years
Fr Mom: if i could sing like anyone, phyllis would b my #1 choice
She ATE and OWNED this!!
Oh my God, it’s like watching a Jazz angel. Oh how I love some Phyllis. I know she is resting peacefully. Beautiful Phyllis. None other can compare.
Why? One of the most attractive women I've ever set eyes on and could she sing, you bet she could. In a class of her own but like so many of them sadly no longer with us. Unbelievably talented.
Her work with Norman Connors is Spectacular!

Pure Smokey Vocals...I still shed a Tear...S.I.P. Ms. Phyllis...Wish you were still here🎤🌷

such a signature vocalist. Especially certain notes she hits are so melodic e.g. 0:54....just mesmerizing....
Gorgeous and so talented! A very sad tragedy 😢
Decades after she left, I'm still in love with this beautiful lady.
Me too ♥️
arguably my favourite video on the internet
mine too !
Mine 3!
She sings with ease. I miss days when you had to have vocals to get a singing contract. We won’t see talent like this anymore.

WOW! I saw this lade twice in London England, she was incredible, but this is the best I've heard her. I think this Caldwell song is the best.
You can hear her passion and range isn't her job but her love, real talent, when it was appreciated. Today... very few could carry her torch.
May she rest in peace 😢
She was so incredible that whatever she sung became a Phyllis Hyman song. R. I.P. Queen
