Yes she was beautiful inside and out, Phyllis was my neighbor and such a friendly soul, no airs or arrogance about her. It was a sad day when she passed away, she's gone but never forgotten.
I find her relatable however being beautiful doesn't mean you will be lucky in love or in life. I am related to many beautiful women on my maternal side and most of them are not lucky in love much more in life in general. Beauty can help but if you don't have the luck or finesse you are going to have a hard life.

Her beauty got her alot from her Acting career and lot's of money and opportunities in gerneral.If she was not beautifual we would have not been as instrested in her or her life.

My mom and aunt took me to a night club as a tween to see her perform in the early 80s. She was like a shining star 🌟 on that stage. I cried when she died.
Her eyes are so soulful. I believe just looking into them, she had a pain I can completely understand. Being a tall woman growing up is hard. Men laugh at you and don't take you seriously. They just hurt you and make you feel ugly because your just not that, "cute little girl next door". It really intimidates small men that you are physically stronger than them physically. OMGosh. I would love to have her lips. Mine are so tiny. Anyone out there that doesn't feel like they fit in, just know YOU ARE THE BEST AND TAKE ADVANTAGE OF YOUR POWER AND UNIQUENESS.

I don't think it's possible for a woman to be physically stronger than men. Height isn't strength. But I get your point. Although it's surprising because long legs are an attribute and tall women are naturally associated with models
@@dearbrave4183 Please let me explain further. I was almost a foot taller than most guys in my class and had to defend myself because I was called a freak and bullied. My height and lower center of gravity, long arms and legs gave me an advantage. If you have ever been in a physical fight, it usually ends up on the ground. Leverage and flexibility and just natural strength allowed me to pin them. This is when I was a child. As a grown woman, granted men are stronger.
I'm super short and controlling men who wanted to treat me like a doll and pet are rife, particularly when I was younger and definitely looked like a child, I had to really wrestle with one who tried to drag me somewhere in broad daylight in a busy shopping centre as people watched, this has been the experience of a few other tiny women, one being physically picked up, yet the few very tall woman I know have had terrifying aggression aimed at them and been called men (they look in no way masculine). Nobody wants or deserves attention like this (hopefully) and I don't understand how they have the nerve to behave in these ways.

Phyllis Hyman was a performer at a time when the recording industry wanted to sexualize every woman that was physically attractive and I think that made her uncomfortable because she had so much talent and they weren't interested and her goals for herself they had an agenda and since she didn't line up with the plans they had, they had absolutely no problems kicking her off the plantation.

I have Phyllis Hyman's entire published music collection. My grandfather, who owned a restaurant in the District of Columbia, knew her well. He spoke to Ms. Hyman a week before her unfortunate passing. She had a wondrous, naturally funny personality; and a unique range. Her ability to effuse lyrical whistles and instrumental sounds was mesmerizing. Phyllis Hyman was exceptional and left an indelible legacy that we are privileged to enjoy FOREVER. Many thanks💚🎗👍🏽!

I used to talk with her brother Rasheed in the 80's in Pittsburgh and he always expressed how worried he was for Phyliss. He said that majority of his family dealt with depression for a long time and was on medication for it. He loved his sister very much but didn't think she would live long. May the Almighty give her Peace in eternity!

My Mom saw her live several times and has met her in person at a boutique DT Philly. My Mom always tell me the story about how she saw Phyllis last performance in Philly. She came out extremely late and when she came out she started sing “I guess you wonder where I been” and started laughing (she was high and drunk). 🤣She died weeks after that show. She had the most beautiful voice and such a glams girl. I watched her Unsung and was so sad to hear what she was going through. As a little girl, “Living All Alone” song use to scare because I felt her pain in the song at such a young age.

I had the privilege of seeing Phyllis Hyman perform a few times . She was AMAZINGGGG. A total package...beautiful voice, powerful stage presence, beauty beyond words , passion. She would even take audience requests and perform songs impromptu!!! One time, I saw her exiting one of those old time big yellow cabs( dating myself😁) in front of the the Beacon Theater . I screamed "Phyillis!!!" !!!! Damn near scared the mess out of her🤣🤣🤣. She jumped , smiled and said " Hey love, you coming to see my show"? Mannnn listen, I will remember that moment forever. RIP Queen .🙏🏽

Phyllis had a voice that was beyond beautiful. I have her ‘I Refuse to be Lonely’ album (cassette), but listening to it , I would get super sad and emotional, you could hear the pain in her voice. She was an amazing artist and did not receive her due credit. Rest easy, Phyllis💕

Rob, I also saw her about that time at Constitution Hall. I went by myself, maybe I felt I needed personal time with her because I saw/felt "it" coming. She was overweight, not dressed with that trademark style. Just an ill fitted black suit, a small I call it Queen Latifah hat, flat black shoes. I kept thinking this is not my Phyllis. She kept walking off the stage during the short instrumental breaks. From my seat I could see her sitting down, drinking water, fanning and wiping her face a lot. People started walking out and I wanted to yell "PLEASE DON'T LEAVE! LEAVING IS DISRESPECTFUL"! But the show was not very good. Disappointing. 😢 Only a true fan would stay to the end. Of course I stayed until the lights came on. 😢😢😢😢

As someone who lives with Bipolar Disorder, chronic loneliness, and body dysmorphia I can relate to her struggles and battle to beat the demons that eventually consumed and robbed her of her life. I took her transitioning hard. Such a monumental lost to the African community and music industry.
She left a indomitable mark on the world more than she knew.

Phyllis was my favorite singer. I saw her live in Detroit one of the best concerts I ever saw, she was class act. Detroit had much love for Phyllis, she sold out every time. When I found out how Clive wanted to make her a pop artist, I was glad Phyliss stayed true to herself. It's unfortunate that the industry didn't value real talent like herself, and she was very outspoken about it. I wished she could have gotten the help she needed. I was crushed when I found out she committed suicide. She didn't get the recognition she deserved.

The first time I heard of her was when unsung covered her for their first episode. I was about 12-13. I would remember watching the episode over and over and just hoping somehow it would end differently. I was so young, she died the year I was born. I understood death completely, but I couldn’t get over how it ended for her.
The first time I heard of her was the last 30 seconds of “No One Can Love You More” followed by the news of her passing delivered by the Hot 105.7 DJ. I had to hear that song again!

Philly girl here....Phyllis is and will always be a legend and home grown royalty. Met her at a theater once, we were seated in the same audience just rows apart. It was Maurice and Gregory Hines in Eubie, in honor of Eubie Blakes. I will never forget the look on my brother's face when I tapped him and said "there's your girl" he was ready to faint..lol. As far as memories go....One of the great ones 💖
She was so beautiful seeing this woman multiple times and it was just breathtaking she brought in the crown hats. Even when she did pick up weight because she was 6'1 it didn't look bad on her. She had her own hair naturally never had to wear weave God bless her soul she would have been 73 years old on July I was truly devastated when she took her life June 30th 1995. And I still pray for her that God may have mercy although. I know what happens to those that commit suicide it's real. Thank you for doing a beautiful story.

Phyllis Hyman is my moms favorite singer and her birthday is on the 6th so I always make sure to play her music for my mom to celebrate her.

I was very familiar with Phyllis Hyman and remember her death my senior year of high school she was unbelievably talented but what I remember the most was a radio interview she did and u could clearly hear the sadness and anger in her voice when she talked about her career and the comparison 2 other artists I remember feeling this woman is deeply troubled I was sad she took her life and never found inner peace

35yr millennial here lol🙃. I grew up on her music by my mom playing it when she would clean the house. She had met Phyllis a month before she died and it broke her heart when she heard of the news back when it happened.
In the early 1990's my wife and I went to a birthday party and backyard barbeque for a birthday party for a young kid named Damon who is the son of Mary and Roger Fennar an interracial couple Mary being white and Roger black in Teaneck New Jersey...They had a nice house on Selvage Ave in Teaneck near a large park. THey were great frinds of ours. They recently moved to Florida...I am 73 now and I am a record producer and songwriter of original music with my own 24 track studio and worked with may prominent musicians over the years but have done nothing lately with my music...while eating a hotdog, I saw this attractive tall black woman with a Fedora hat that stood out among all the guests....THere was a lot of chatter going on as it would at a party outdoors on a nice summer day.....As I eavesdropped I heard ths woman talking to someone about her getting a recording contract with a major record company and I thought to myself that's what they all say.....I then said hello to her, and told her I record original music, and I then said good luck to her and she said back to me Good luck with your recording studio !! That was it.......Later in their living room as most of the guests had left and we were probably the last to leave, I made a comment and said who was that pretty tall lady I was chatting with, and Roger said to me that the woman was PHYLLIS HYMAN and at the time I was NOT familiar with any of her music..... Roger then said that she was GOING OUT with his COUSIN ! ! I KNEW she was a singer but was really NOT sure I had heard any of her songs...The next day I went to a record store which was only 2 blocks away and asked the owner if he had ANY CD'S by her........He took out 3 CD'S that were used and said I could have them for 2 dollars each and bought all 3 of them.......The first one I played was YOU KNOW HOW TO LOVE ME on ARISTA RECORDS and instantly realized WHAT A FABULOUS SINGER SHE WAS ! ! ! ! ! and then when I played LIVING ALL ALONE and others I realized she was better than fabulous.....SHE WAS INCREDIBLY FANTASTIC ! ! ! ! ! ! A YEAR OR TWO LATER WHEN SHE DIED I CRIED A RIVER OF TEARS BECAUSE SHE HIT ME DEEP IN MY SOUL...W O W ! ! ! !

I remember hearing about the news of her death. Sadness was steeped into her music. I am careful to what I listen to because some of her music has a depressive spirit in it - it is the same spirit that ended her life.
“Living All Alone” was a testament of her loneliness, while “You Know How To Love Me” was a celebration of love and being in love.

Thank you for doing this story. I was friends with her niece as a child. I love her she was extremely talented and beautiful. She was smart and pro black.I believe that she keep it real and that was a problem for the music industry she refused to be a puppet. Ms Phyllis was a true artist. That should in my opinion be a household . name. It’s so sad that she lived in a time when mental health was a taboo topic. Her battles resonate with lots of women including myself. Thank you for sharing stories of our icons. We are all women facing similar struggles and victories. We can continue to grow and learn from one another. God bless you.

We were at the very first ESSENCE FESTIVAL in N.O. In 1995 when Patti LaBelle announced from the stage that Ms. Hyman was dead, by her own choice and sang a tribute to her. We were shocked and saddened and it brought to mind how many of her songs reflected the sadness she had been living. She was truly a talented, beautiful woman with a troubled soul. RIP
I was her neighbor in New York we lived in the same building. She was drop dead gorgeous….of course she intimidated men she was 6 feet tall! The Arista plantation put all their marketing behind Whitney Houston

Very beautiful woman who was just as pretty older with the weight gain, she was no doubt right about her vocal quality being better than a load of newer people but the industry is shallow and people go out of fashion, even if she managed to look identical to how she looked decades prior the result would have been the same, I wish she had known this. I know there were other issues going on, the loss of family is a major one, but disregard from others is really hurtful, even though there was support, negative generally outweighs positive.

I had the honor of seeing Phyllis perform at the Brooklyn Academy of Music about one year before her passing. She was awesome and I fell in love with her! It pained me deeply to learn of her passing.

A very beautiful woman with talent and charisma to spare. I remember how warm, personable and funny she was with the staff of Radio City Music Hall back in the day. I also remember the shock we were in when we heard that she had died. She was scheduled to perform at the Apollo Theater that very evening. Did you know that she also sang an unreleased Bond theme song? Check out her version of "Never Say Never Again". It's here on UA-cam and is superior (IMO) to the theme actually used for the film.
Love Phyllis Hyman's music. She was stunningly beautiful, talented, an and amazing writer. She was one of my favorite artist. I never got to see her perform but when you listen to her music. You get a sense of the loneliness in her voice when she sang. I still listen to her music Thank you Karine for sharing! Love this story. Love and light to you Karine and everyone here.
