This video is getting more views than I anticipated so I wanted to clarify a few comments! I’m not stating these as fact, these are just based on my experience and opinions. Everyone has different products they feel are unnecessary. 😊
I'm with you that vitamins and supplements can be very helpful and often necessary. My point was to highlight the lack of regulation that causes consumers to fall for marketing ploys, leading to overspending or even an excess of certain ingredients. I take vitamins and supplements so I am definitely not knocking them. I just think we should consume these trendy supplements thoughtfully and consciously.
On eye creams: I’m not saying you shouldn’t buy them or that they aren’t effective, but that a lot of the time they’re just the same formula as a face cream, marked up at a higher price per oz. There are obviously exceptions to this!
Few things in life are black and white / good or bad, my intention in this video was to highlight that a lot of products *can be* unnecessary and we should spend our money consciously.

In addition to not needing eye cream, you need to add neck cream. I started using eye, neck, and face creams and realized one cream for all three was way better. Now, I do use a separate eye cream with tretinoin because it is a much smaller percent than the face tret, but as time goes on and I adjust to the tret, I'll just use the face tret for my eyes.

But the contribution of them excessively using that, it's also the economy of most people struggling just to afford food gas rent. I can also add a drop in my moisturizer, but mostly I've just been patting it on. I also like that I can add it to body lotion or pat it along my collar bone. But that's just me! Yes, I do disagree about expensive perfume lol. Are there many instances when the quality doesn't justify the price? Of course. And if perfume isn't something someone wants to or is able to spend a lot of money on, I understand that as well. But perfume in general is a luxury good, and perfumery an artform that requires extensive knowledge, skill, and creativity. We don't tend to think of it as art and it's taken for granted because it's a widely used commodity, but it's not unlike fine art or haute couture. For people who wear perfume to appreciate the artform and not only to smell good, expensive perfume can be very worth it! Not to mention, many of these less expensive houses are trying to dupe higher end fragrances, in some ways stealing from the original artists. They're the "fast fashion" of perfume houses.

    • @Alex-pk7rn
      @Alex-pk7rn 4 місяці тому +44

I agree when we're talking about niche, artisan perfume houses, but most people think Dior or Chanel are "luxury" when you're literally just paying top dollar for the multi million dollar ad campaigns and the brand name. Jonny Depp doesn't come cheap. None of those big name perfumes are particularly elegant or interesting. They're made for the mass market and for people who can't afford to buy a Dior dress, but want some of the luxury cachet of the house. Then they end up smelling like 10 million other people who also think Channel Chance is their "signature scent". I think the niche houses that most people haven't even heard of are definitely worth spending on though. That's where you'll find something truly unique and well crafted.

i am OBSESSED with your channel! however just a little fact check - eye cream actually is different. it is often formulated with much more oil and is thicker than face cream, as the area around your eye has fewer oil glands so it can tolerate more of certain products. that being said, if youre just looking for moisture, a non irritating moisturizer would be fine around the eyes - but eye creams are different and are formulated with amounts that are specific for the fragile, thinner, delicate skin around the eye (whereas our face has thicker skin).

I will point out as exceptions to some of these rules:
    - eye creams are unnecessary, yes, but some people see benefit from the ones that have caffeine (not found in face creams) and/or a brightening tint to them. People with dark circles and/or bags under their eyes can see a noticeable difference. My mother is an elementary teacher, and if she has a day she forgets her brightening eye cream with caffeine (which has a firming effect), her students notice and ask if she is sick. But if the eye cream you’re looking at does not have these things, it’s not worth buying. And NEVER spend money on a luxury one. If you’re spending more than $40 on eye cream you’re getting scammed.
    - tinted brow gels are fine and actually the easiest product for some of us to use. You don’t get mascara unevenly glopped around as she describes, eyebrows shouldn’t be different. Gels are fast, easy, and CAN be used to shape the hairs. They also have a staying power no pencil or pomade does as they not only glue the hairs in place but the color is locked in too and resists swiping away with sweat. I think she just doesn’t really know how to use them.

I have light brows and they're sparse, so no, tinted gels do not work, and yes, I've applied them correctly. She's not against the gel holding power, she said she uses gel, but pencil fills in sparse areas that tinted gel cannot. So if you have full brows then cool, the tinted gel will work for you, but for sparse and especially light brows, the tinted gel is a mess and won't let you really fill in the color.

I am so incredibly grateful to have found your UA-cam page. I’m a sophomore in college currently, and I love beauty/skincare/wellness content. My issue is that no influencer or brand really makes me feel seen as someone with super oily/combination skin, and I’ve been forcing myself to fall into certain makeup trends for the past year in order to feel like I’m not on the outside.
This summer, I’ve made a huge change in my life with the amount of clutter I have, and deciding to take action in my life and only keep what is necessary. I’ve been binging your videos, and it’s helped me so much to feel more confident in myself and my decisions to not feed into consumer culture. It makes me so happy to finally find a content creator who cares about highlighting their natural beauty, and WHO DOESN’T ONLY HAVE DRY SKIN!! I swear, it is almost impossible for me to find creators who don’t show product reviews with the preface “keep in mind, my skin is very dry”. As silly as that is, I truly have never resonated more with videos than ones posted by you, and I’m so glad to finally feel like I am not going crazy for becoming increasingly critical in the recent year over the vast increase in brands promoting the general public to spend money on so many things we don’t need. Keep it up, and I’m sending so much love 🤍🤍🤍

I'm a lazy person and always on the lookout for products that would target multiple skin concerns at once. However, there are a couple of factors here that do in fact make single ingredient products necessary.
    1) Certain ingredients are difficult to formulate so as to make them both stable and able to penetrate the skin barrier. These ingredienst need to come in a very specific environment to do their job. I keep coming across complex formulations that include vit C (L-Ascorbic Acid) and retinoids that cannot possibly offer those ingredients the environment they need to do their job. These two need to come in single ingredient form to work.
    2) Skin care that offers a ton of different popular and effective ingredients in one product often has ineffective quantites of said ingredients. I don't no why. Maybe the product would end up too expensive otherwise? So many times I've looked at an ingredient list and gotten excited. Then I start figuring out the percentages of said ingredients and they turn out to be outside the therapeutic range. Ie won't do anything. Throwing 1% azelaic acid in a product is an example I've seen over and over. When all research showing skin care benefits for that ingredient are done with 15-20% that 1% isn't going to do anything. So I have my azelaic acid as a single ingredient product as well as my vit C and retinoids.

This is an important message to get out there. We don't have to be slaves to marketing and influencers. I do differ in my opinion on a couple items you mentioned.
Tinted eyebrow gel is a very useful product when your brows start going grey. I get my brows colored when I get my hair colored, but there are always a few hairs that are stubborn or grow in after the dye was applied. I honestly don't find a good tinted brow gel messy.
I agree that luxury perfume can be crazy expensive but As far as getting it for the best price per ounce, the larger the bottle, the lower the cost per ounce. I do buy a travel size to try scents out or to have something I know I only want to special occasions. If I love a scent, I try to get it in the 3.4 oz size. Of course, if you find a dupe that smells great, go for it! 😊
Single ingredient serums...I tend to cherry pick the ones I want because I can customize strengths. I am 63 so my needs are different from someone younger. I will say that most of us don't need a single hyaluronic acid serum because that ingredient is in most other serums. I want to use my Vitamin C in the morning, not at night with my retinal or exfoliatants. Well, that's just my humble POV. Thanks for the excellent content.❤

I’d rather own a few travel sizes instead at a lower cost, but everyone’s different!

Long story short, the parents/workers aren't paid enough so they need help from their kids in order to feed them. Jasmine can only be harvested in the middle of the night, and it causes the kids eye and skin issues because they don't have any protective gear. After hours of harvesting, they get paid the equivalent of 1-1,5 USD or something. Since then, I've sworn off perfumes and will finish up the ones I have. Also, mica (the "glitter" in makeup) is many times collected by impoverished families and their children.

You can use a lip gloss and a piece of cloth instead (that will work better than a face scrub), but some lip scrubs are just very convenient to use - I love the ones in lipstick form. Thats what tinted eyebrow gel does for me, I would use a eyebrow pencil in a slightly lighter color to fill in my brows, and go over it with a tinted gel in a slightly darker color - that creates that dimension and makes it look less drawn on imo.
for sparse areas a bit of a darker pencil or eyeshadow - et voilá.

Love your videos, but I do have to stress that the eye cream point is, well, not entirely true. While some people have different needs on their face overall and under their eyes, the biggest selling point for eye creams is not that. For something to be called an eye cream, extensive opthalmological testing is required. It ensures that if you accidentaly get it into the eye it's unlikely to cause you any significant issue. Regular face creams are not tested in that area at all and thus you cannot have that confidence. Especially if we're talking eye creams with actives that have different maximum percentages in eye creams and face creams. Just wanted to add that, because they are not a scam at all, despite what many people think. It's just the difference doesn't lie in the visible things :) writing this with love tho

It’s so true, there’s lots of beauty products we don’t need. I would include primers as well. The few I’ve tried didn’t do much for me. My conditioner is over $30 so I prefer to save it for my hair and use shaving cream instead and I do buy a full bottle of my Diptyque perfume because it’s the only perfume I wear and I truly love the scent. Great video as always!

So interesting how everybody’s “need” items are so different. Primer - for me - is the absolute most necessary product I put on my face (besides serum & moisturizer). I use Smashbox Primer (the original “smooth & blur” formula) and it does exactly what it says on the tube: blurs pores & smooths my skin, also slightly mattifies which is crucial for my oily t-zone. I can leave the house confidently with only primer on my face; it’s absolutely a “need” for me. Under-eye concealer & brow gel are second tier, but I believe those are kinda necessary too - particularly for those of us over 35.

Tbh I'm perfectly ok with paying a certain amount of money for my perfume, but that's because i only use niche fragrances.
Therefore i know I'm not paying for the brand name or the marketing, I'm paying for a product that's genuinely high quality.
And also, as another commenter has said, parfumery is a form of art. I don't expect it to be cheap.

Oh, I'm one of the exceptions in the eye cream department. Yes, I can see how it would be unnecessary for those lucky enough to have normal skin but I get milia if I'm not careful. Any cream that works fine on the rest of my face would easily overwhelm the delicate skin of my eye area and poof...milia! And they are very hard to get rid of once you get them. But as I do need the extra hydration around my eyes since I wear makeup (and it would be a dry flaky mess if I didn't) my miracle product, going on 15 years now, is the Boots Cucumber Eye Gel!!! 😉 But I'm a special case and I get that most eye creams are in fact face moisturisers in mini format! 😅
Agreed, the lip scrub is a no for me too! I just use my toothbrush (having rinsed it off first of course) and do a quick once over before applying the Nuxe Rêve the Miel lip balm (the one in the pot is the most nourishing), and I can't tell you the last time I had dry flaky lips and I'm a matte liquid lipstick wearer.
Lol, the shaving cream is a must for me! I'm extremely nearsighted and I don't wear my contacts or glasses in the bath so a shaving cream that's bright white and where you can clearly see the parts you have already shaved and haven't is a must for me! If I use just a conditioner I can't actually see what I've already shaved 😂

I just recently found your content and definitely agree with a lot of what you talk about in this video. It's definitely dependent upon the person as well. I get why you personally find the individual ingredients don't work well for you where as I'm the opposite. I've done the all inclusive treatments and it never helped my skin. Now that I use separate ingredients, my skin has balanced out (and my moisture barrier is slowly repairing itself).
But seriously, huge de-influencing here for a lot of things that some people may not be aware of being the same like the eye creams.

A huge problem in the supplement industry is the labels often don't match what makes it into the bottle.
The NY Attorney General ran a study in 2015, and found supplements from GNC, Target, Walgreens and Walmart contained unlabeled ingredients, varied amounts of the ingredient you're buying, or none at all. Yay allergies!
It was 9 years ago and I've not seen anything to fix the problem, though that could be the case. Every food has to be honest with their lists -- you can't secretly switch out meat for oatmeal and peanuts, you'd kill people! Anyway, be careful when using supplements!

Agree with you on many of your points, but the lip scrub: to my sensitive skin, I sometimes actually need lip scrub because it helps me being more careful. I always gets split lip from rubbing. The lip scrub lasts for months and I use it sparingly before removing makeup or before getting in the shower. I have weird skin though, and the lip scrub only contains coconut oil/butter and sugar. And I totally agree that most people don’t actually need it.
But for some reason the washcloth or rubbing, makes me bleed, and I have no idea why💁🏻‍♀️

I’m going to add a caveat to expensive perfumes as someone who has a fragrance hobby. Someone can absolutely get dupe house perfumes and get a similar result for the scent bubble it creates. But that doesn’t take into account the longevity and performance of a perfume. Plus dupe houses will not be 100% the same no matter how hard it tries. If you just want something that will make you smell good, then get a dupe or just a tester. But if you want to experience a perfume, then I’d recommend just saving up and getting the perfume at its higher price tag.

You're right about The Ordinary. I bought some products when they first became popular but I became annoyed with all the steps in my routine, irritated my skin by using too many products, and spent more money. I still like their squalane cleanser though. It's great at gently removing eye makeup. I've been listening to the Chemist Confessions podcast (they have a UA-cam channel too). They said The Ordinary's single ingredient products are mostly just Propanediol which is a solvent and a tiny bit of the ingredient advertised on the bottle. I highly recommend checking out Chemist Confessions. Very informative.

I pretty much agree with with everything you said. The issue for me is lip stains, I have purchased many that you like and the other creator you mentioned. Now, I like all of them, but even when I buy the lighter colors, they all look dark and fake on me. So I end up putting an opaque gloss on top to tone it down. Today, I tried the Wonderlips, which I don't like the peeling part, but my lips are small, and finally I have colors that are just right! I thought they were full of crap...but it was a very good deal and I'm glad I went for it. Thanks for keeping us more practical!💚
