Kait, I just wanted to tell you this: In one of your videos you mentioned how much you love the rom&nd melting lip balms. Well, I am now addicted to them! I've bought 3 so far and I can't wait to buy more colors! I have extremely dry lips that peel constantly, and this product is AMAZING! Omy gosh they last long, and the title is so right on, because they literally melt into my lips and I've never heard of this brand, I'm so happy I found them! I just recently found your channel and I'm so thrilled about this product, thank you so much! 😘

Totally in sync with you! I fell into the crazed UA-cam makeup-buying era. It was my first realization that there was makeup beyond what I saw at the drugstore lol. BAAAAAD time to discover UA-cam. Now, I have come to realize that I don't like to do complicated eyeshadow looks. I don't like bright colors even though I'm told how AMAZING they are. I'm a barely-there, all-neutrals gal. I don't wear anything but the Dr. Jart Cicapair color corrector and a few dots of concealer, and eyeliner. Not even mascara!. And I NEVER will wear all the gorgeous, $$$ full-pigment lipsticks (Tom Ford, Dior, Chanel) I bought that make me feel like Ronald McDonald . :) I only wear sheer, cool-toned glosses and balms now. I am super happy with my decluttered, minimal collection that I actually use. Maybe a cool-toned, mauve product appeals now and then, but otherwise I look at Sephora and don't want a single thing. YAY FOR MEEEE!

I have to say Kait your "negativity" that people post about sounds like common sense to me. I agree with so much of what you said in regard to disappearing cream blushes, foil shadows that look bad on my wrinkly hooded eyes, lip oils that make my lips drier, sheet masks and primer's I never reach for. I refuse to buy any more matte lipsticks that dry the crap out my lips and require a gloss over them in order to use them. Like you I live in a small house and I no longer have room for more stuff, so I don't buy backups of makeup. The only things I buy as backups on sale are skincare products ( 3 items) I use religiously year after year and then I only buy one. That will get me through 1 year till the next time they go on a big sale. This video will help me really limit what I will buy during the Sephora sale or Ulta's 21 days of beauty.

People post about her being negative? Perhaps they are being negative posting about people being negative. I don’t know what’s going on these days but some people are getting all twisted up in their thinking. There is nothing wrong with disliking something. I’m speaking in general not at you. It just isn’t healthy and not well adjusted. Imho I don’t buy blush that isn’t a nude or a bronzer . I never liked blush on me and I feel uncomfortable wearing it. I never buy primers or mascara that isn’t a tubing. I don’t but colorful bright indie eyeshadows or super shiny metallic ones. It’s just not flattering on me.

My list of what I’m not buying anymore is pretty much covered by what you said haha.
No more backups: I find my tastes and needs change sometimes before I can use them all up, so I’m better off not buying them. If I ever run out of a favourite before “the next sale”, I have enough stuff that my second favourite product will do just fine until then.
Something must go before I buy something new: I have a lot of skincare and makeup already, so my rule is that I have to use something up before I buy a new thing in the same category (e.g., foundation).
Sheet masks: I don’t find them very impactful. I would only buy them if it was for a fun skincare/spa party with friends, not as a serious investment in improving my skin.
Eyeshadow palettes- I’m generally a no-makeup makeup girlie so the Mac palette with like 12 shades of brown is all I need besides some singles.

Metallic liquid shadow sounds like a bad idea if one just thinks about it. Beauty consumers need to get smart.

I stopped using primers, setting sprays, concentrated serums, and I don’t need viral products that may not be worth it. They can put so much more effort into perfecting their products, and that is well worth it compared to brands that release new products almost every few weeks.

I truly appreciate your thoroughness and the specificity with which you give your stamp of approval. I have a lot of things I feel that align with what you like in a product and your texture, flavor and scent descriptions are so helpful. I understand many people are on you about your “negativity” but I think there should be more influencers like you - making discerning content on products and bringing their perspective to products. People use products and individual people make products personal, they form attachments and use them day to day. I always feel bad that you preface your explanation for why you get on UA-cam and talk about opinions because you have every right to do that. And those who criticize have every right to silently leave. It’s not that deep. Thank you again ❤

I never needed primers or setting sprays in my 20s, 30s or 40s - I felt exactly the way you describe. As I’ve aged, I’ve gotten deeper hollows under my eyes, so I use more concealer than I used to, and the texture of my skin there is changing so I do experience creasing. I started exploring primers and setting sprays, and they help a lot. I think these are examples of products that are marketed to everyone even though they aren’t really necessary for a lot of people.

Self tanners. I how my pale Irish self loves the look on myself. O how I loathe the work involved! And the smell. I used to religiously self tan every summer. Now I'm a mom and I don't have the time or the energy! My husband mentioned that he misses the tan recently and I reminded him that he hated the smell and that it took me hours to do it. Also, why don't salons that offer spray tanning have high powered fans to blow you dry after? Idk, maybe they do now. It's been a minute!

Since discovering your channel I have finally figured out that it's ok to not like something because you know you have a weird ick that will prevent you from using a product. Also I am totally with you on the lip stuff. I much prefer a thicker formula, but my 13 yr old daughter prefers thinner ones (except the nyx fat oil, only one we both like) which got me thinking... millennials grew up with lip smackers and they were so thick and came with amazing scents! I am a long-term tretinoin and clindamycin/benzoyl peroxide user - I no longer buy scrubs or chemical exfoliants. I saved a lot of money buying 8 oz tubs of fine microdermabrasion crystals and I use it with a cleansing balm. It works better than anything else, and my cell turnover is so fast that my skin looks terrible and clogged if I don’t exfoliate with this daily. Also, French sunscreens are way better, and occasionally using a stabilised Vitamin C is nice (my favourite is a brand from Whole Foods). Slugging nightly with Egyptian Magic Cream is great too. Dr Hauschka’s Rose Day Cream and Quince Day Cream are both really wonderful. Jao’s Goe Oil is incredible and I always love Yves Rocher Monoi Oil and Nuxe Huile Prodogieuse.

I hate the weird minty scent!! I also noticed that I do like a "classic" peppermint or spearmint scent and therefore figure I don't like menthol or similar compounds being added for plumping versus peppermint flavouring being added for taste and scent. They definitely use different concentrations in either case, plus in the second case the scents and taste are well integrated to be pleasant instead of being a side effect of the plumping formula /purpose to smell like a "lip plumper" which is definitely not tasty

If I don’t like the fragrance, I don’t like the product and I don’t enjoy the regime. I am a fragrance junkie. If it smells too “cheap” to me, I won’t buy it because I won’t use it. I actually like a lot of strange scents. I will suggest this because I found it is the perfect primer/sunscreen, BoJ serum sunscreen. I think it is 50++++. It has a slight scent upon application because it has jasmine actives. The scent disappears almost immediately. I really appreciate your desire to pare down. I have a full basement and a special makeup museum storage area. I like having a visual reminder of special occasions and wonderful makeup eras. I have really pared down my daily makeup routine and my evening ritual is simplified. I don’t need the complexity in my life. Thank you Kait, this was a great check list. I appreciate you explaining why using primer on a physical sunscreen can lead to problems. I feel like every physical sunscreen I've loved doubles as a primer and a color corrector as well.
The only chemical sunscreen that doesn't leave me dewy is the Haruharu Wonder. I have to apply some color correcting primer where needed. They have a physical sunscreen too which I plan to try next.
    Well done, Kait!

Thanks! There are water-based mineral sunscreens that work great with primer and don't pill, but I always feel that watwer-based sunscreens make my makeup look horrible. Maybe my favorite foundations are also silicone based, that may be the issue. Either way, I just don't need a primer!

Kait, yesss. I am definitely the same with mascara preference. When you said it never flakes or smudges and basically a lazy girls dream mascara I'm with you on the thrive. I've had my subscription to their mascara for 5-6 years and it's the only mascara I use. So you do have a mascara preference twin! I think your channel needs more love because of how hard you work and how refreshingly honest you are. I don't understand how you're not getting 100,000 on most of your videos I really enjoy your content and you deserve all the likes from that video. Since discovering your channel you've helped me save so much money because we have a many of the same preferences! I kept finding myself saying "Yes, exactly!!" I don't think primer does anything, I haven't purchased any in years, or lip oils or chemical exfoliants (same thing every time really bad reaction to my sensitive skin) I also purchased both the Moira shadow and the liquid Bodyography blush in soul you recently recommended and I'm loving both so so much. Thank you! Much love ❤

Huge congrats on your other vid hitting such good numbers! So well deserved!! There are two channels i consistently recommend to friends who want to watch beauty content from someone honest, relatable & intelligent. You & Amanda Z. I love you both for the exact same reasons. Not only are you honest, relatable, intelligent & grounded, but youre both an encyclopedia of makeup & skincare info. It's interesting because I live in both the creative/artistic/indiemakeup world & "everyday" "wearable" drugstore/mid priced/luxury sometimes/kbeauty world. What i say is that i love ALL makeup, from my usual everyday brown mascara, grey or brown baby wing, sparkly (usually cool toned neutral) one & done eyeshadow, lip balm (or gloss or liquid lip balm), & nude blush to the most avant-garde, high concept art you can imagine & everything in between. I will say, I think you should give yourself a tad more credit, your makeup skills are sublime & i always look to you for recommendations & 100% trust what you say. I've yet to pick up a single product based on your advice & hated or even disliked it! 🤌💜

Agree with just about everything here. The one exception I *have* to mention is the Smashbox Photo Finish primer. It really does make your makeup look absolutely flawless and filter like. The 2024 catch is that it’s silicone based and won’t work great with most every day, skincare/water-based foundations we’re seeing so much of now. But throw that baby under an Estee Lauder DW for a glam event and you’ll be astounded. 😂 Great video!

Very much with you on primer and setting spray. The only primers I have are for glow because those are the ones that make any kind of difference with my makeup, and since I rarely wear foundation, I like to have that natural glowy, lit from within skin. Like you, I work from home, so I'm not needing my makeup to last for the day. I don't need setting sprays and I certainly don't need them in a thousand different finishes, so I own just one that I bust out on the rare occasions where I have a full face of makeup that I need to last.
Also with you on lip oils. They almost always dry out my lips. The only one I like and use consistently is the NYX one because it is thicker, stiffer and hydrating.

It is refreshing to watch a video like yours.
I have one setting spray that I like, I don’t use it all the time because I forget or because I am wondering if it’s smart to wear it in the sun, I’m not sure. So it lasts forever and I will buy maybe another one when this one is completely used.
Regarding the primers, I have three that I like and I wait for finishing them completely before buying just one - maybe.
I’m not a big fan of big eyeshadow palettes either, I prefer the tiny things. I don’t tan myself ever, we have some sun most of the time in L.A. I actually have to protect myself from the sun. And I always use the same skincare products that I trust. I try other ones with samples but I know what I like.
Regarding the lip oils, I’m a big fan of the Clarins one because it is thick enough and stays on my lips, I actually love it, but I am not going to try every lip oil on earth, that would be ridiculous.
And I try to avoid buying backups now because I have enough to last during a long time. Unless I am afraid that my favorite product is going to be discontinued, it happened to me several times, now I am prudent, but it’s rare fortunately.
And I agree with you regarding the sheet masks, not sustainable, not efficient enough.

Thank you for this video!! I also have EDS and Im in my late 30s. I focus most on barrier repair and my go to brands for skincare are pyunkang yul, Mary & May, and etude soon Jung and dear Klairs and Haru Haru are also in rotation. I very rarely exfoliate and focus on sun care.
I have a journal where I write down everything I own, my thoughts on it, and realized that it’s worth it for me to just save up for my one or two foundations I LOVE that perfectly match me and don’t irritate me than have 4-5 foundations I feel ok about and can make work but don’t love.
I also super consider who is providing opinions on products- if I know someone is a similar skin tone I rely on their opinions for color swatches (Im red green color blind lol) and notice I prefer using palettes in a similar tone range I know go together than singles unless I really know if they go together or not.
I also have one concealer and one mascara I really love, so those are the only ones I will buy again! I don’t want to experiment with those anymore.
For hair as well, I have a few products I know work well for me and are affordable, so those are the only ones I’m planning on buying. (It’s down to my butt, curly, and doesn’t “need” much styling or maintenance products)
I also try to be mindful what companies are on BDS lists- thankfully a lot of K beauty brands are safe 🎉

What a brilliantly put together video. Subscribed ❤ love love the content and agree with pretty much everything. I only buy and use sheet masks when I have an event (for better makeup application) because I learnt that through a makeup masterclass. I love how hydrating they are for the limited time and then seal it off with moisturiser and primer. Makeup looks and feels way better.
I’ve stopped buying lipsticks of anyyy kind as well over the last 4-5 months because I don’t see how they are drastically different from one another. I’m sooo done with balmy glosses, glossy stains, glossy tints etc and every brand coming out with a lip oil. The one thing that works well is the Clarins lip oil, which I wear to my brisk walks to prevent dehydration. I plan to use all my remaining lip tints after the lip oil is done. I only find liquid matte lipsticks that are transferproof worth spending over, and I’m not buying those anytime soon either.
It’s a vicious cycle of products going viral, then out of stock, then affordable alternatives emerge, etc etc. Every brand is just making the same stuff. Rare beauty recently did a shimmery blush - how’s that different from good old Milani’s baked blushes for example which have been around for years? I’m tired of the beauty industry 😅

need these sort of reminders to remain conscious when shopping. as i can get swept up in the hype of a fun product way too easily. personally, i love lip oils but i don’t need to buy any more because i have 4 and there’s no need to have every shade of a more sheer type of product 😂
we definitely need to be honest with ourselves about whether we’ll actually get decent use out of something before purchasing.
i’m also like you in that i can’t stand rose or mint scented lip products, so even though the product can look perfect, if it has those scents, i’ll get very little use out of it.
and with eyeshadows, i’ll be critical to try not to repeat what i already have and won’t buy a palette if i can’t see myself using more than half the shades.

I feel like there are very few combo/oily influencers because I feel you on the dewy sunscreen and cream blush opinions. My face just eats up blush; I actually do use the Danessa Myricks cream blush (which is supposed to be better for oily skin) as a base and top with powder, put it on clown level, and by the time I’m at work it’s gone! With sunscreens it got to the point that every new release was super dewy and/or highlighty and it was tempting but I knew deep down I’d hate the greasiness.

Will try the Thrive mascara as I find most tubing mascaras flake and end up in my eyes. Same with lip oils, that's how they feel on me. As for eye shadow palettes, prefer creamy, easy to blend and a few are plenty. As. for tanning products, do we need to be tanned all the time? It is packaged in a squeeze tube. The beauty part is that it's not a chemical sunscreen. Maybe you could top it off with a foundation with a higher Spf to get to Spf 50.

These are really thoughtful selects! Liquid glitter shadows and dewy sunscreens are a hard pass for me too. I never buy backups due to lack of storage as well, aside from the Neutrogena Hydroboost Skin Tint because I'm constantly scared it'll be discontinued lol.
I'm not a chemist, but have worked on several sunscreen projects, and it may be hard to find an SPF 50 mineral sunscreen that's lightweight, matte (but not drying), and wears well under makeup! It's just hard to formulate something lightweight with high zinc content, even with added boosters. Anyway, the best SPF 50 I've found is the Cetaphil Sheer Mineral Liquid Sunscreen. However, it is a little heavy in my opinion so not the BEST for under makeup, but they do market it that way so I think it can work under some complexion products. - Britta

Thanks so much for this video! It's so nice to see a content creator stop using *all the things*. We have very similar skin and I recently stopped using chemical exfoliants and most serums because they either made my skin too sensitized or broke me out (everything breaks me out). I've been on a low concentration of tret for almost a year, but I'm still getting hormonal acne flares on my chin. Are you liking the Epiduo? Is it irritating? Does it bleach out fabric? I love BP, but no matter what I do it always bleaches something.

Yep! I've been on Epiduo Forte since 2016. Everyone is different, I never found it irritating and I built up such a great tolerance to it that I've had zero side effects from Tret. It does bleach some of my t-shirts so I only sleep in shirts I don't care about when using my Epiduo Forte.

I feel you on the mineral sunscreen that said my favorite happens to be a mineral… the Elta Md, it’s not matte but it’s not greasy at all, it feels a lot like a moisturizer as opposed to an SPF. And same with the lip oil and sheet masks except the NYX lip oil but lets be real… that ain’t a lip oil 😂.
