    Nice tips. I find it easier for me to cut shingles from the back side using a regular blade; one score and easily snaps off. This causes the least damage to blades and I don't have to fight with the cut by going over it multiple times cutting from the rough front side of the shingle. I use the hook blade when I have to cut from the front side when cutting shingles to edge them at the rake.

      You really can't/shouldn't. Look at any roof near you with architectural shingles. They'll almost always have cut up 3 tab, or some kind of custom capping. This is extremely time consuming to end up with improper capping. He didn't finish the capping properly, or nail it properly. But its probably water tight..-Professional roofer

    Great video! Thanks. One thing you were doing wrong with this type of shingle was lining up the shingles to the nail line instead of the top of the cut out. I used the same type of shingle and wasn't sure how to do the ridge cap with this dual layer type of shingle, thanks again. Done plenty with the old style of shingles with the slots cut in them, these were new to me.

    You do not want to install architectural shingles over a ridge. The reveal will seperate from the base sheet of the shingle. This is a method that roofers automatically assume you do not know what your doing. Get a matching 3 tab or spend the money on actual hip and ridge.

      @@robertandrade4888 Some shingle companies don't make 3 tab shingles the same color as their Architectural shingles. That's what I'm running into. I have to do mine like this simply because Gaf doesn't make 3 tab shingles in Oyster. Also, you can see that his top shingles are folded over the peak. There's no way water is getting in there. Also, the shingle under the decorative tabs on the architectural shingles are SOLID. So no way water is getting to the peak.

    If it's wrong than where do we get the 3 tab roof capping at? There nowhere to be found in the section that the arch shingles are at in the store. And trying to find the same color is nearly impossible, especially 3 tabs! In the end all we got for choice is the architectural shingles! The ridge caps they make specifically for this that are bulky & big are the first thing of the roof that deteriorate & go decades before the shingles see the end of their life! Or is that the selling point them saleguys implement to homeowners thats it's time for a new roof scam?

  • @user-mx4zn8ip9e
    @user-mx4zn8ip9e 9 днів тому

    Four big issues: 1) the nails are not on the combo bond position, making the shingles much more weaker against wind. Shingles could be blown away easily. 2) the shingles are not aligned correctly (looking at the ending shingles at 8:28). 3) the connection between the ridge and normal rows of shingles are bad, and there is no way to be bond together in the way. There is big gap between those normal shingle rows and ridge cap will make wind to easily enter below the shingles. It is true when the weather is hot, the shingles are easy to bond together, but high wind and storm conditions mostly happen when weather is NOT hot. 4) One another big mistake is to cut ridge caps (at 2:36). When you cut it in your way, the nails of upper cap will NOT touch the cap below, making the ridge caps much more weaker (see ua-cam.com/video/jM1HEI36zJc/v-deo.html). Finally there are reasons why pros don't use those shingles as ridge cap.

  • @davidlysohirka798

    Why would you not buy capping? And i think you are cutting off to much off the back of shingle......each cap only needs 2 nails but 4 hold it down if you only remove a sliver while cutting your capping.

Using dimensionals for cap is gonna void your warranty and it's gonna leak as I'm SURE you're gonna break your double laminations zone bending it like that.
