Great tip and it makes a lot of sense. I have to repair-replace 5 of them. We just had a horrific wind storm that blew shingles off the roof. I'll have to repair the roof at night because during the day it's 115 to 119 degrees outside and the roof temperature is 178 degrees. Thanks for the great video.
We were impacted by Hurricane Ian. Fortunately we only lost a handful of hip and ridge shingles. Watched countless videos on this subject, and this one was the most helpful. Totally gave me the confidence to DIY this repair Thanks.

3 cuts instead of 6 and more nailing surface makes sense to me---thankyou---i just had my 70 ft. of ridge shingles blow off of my ridge vent in 40 mph winds and roof is only 3 years old----they cut the corners and over drove the nails--subscribed

Just ran across this video....had to replace some shingles this morning and realized a couple that need replacing ran under a ridge...so I did not replace the...bur after watching this, I think I can do it...thanks..now what's the best way to get back on the ladder when coming down

Bet you're a fine carpenter, too! I come from a long line of 'em, never heard of dog-earing ridge shingles in all my life, & certainly wasn't taught that by my elder craftsmen. Reminder: Precision cutting of the 3-tab into even 1/3s is also an option, with little to no edge trimming afterward.

🤯 Bro, this is BEAST! Exactly the advice that I was searching for. My roof lost like 5 sloped ridge shingles after Hurricane Delta, and I can't get anyone to do the repair right now. I may have to do the repair myself, I'm just concerned about the steep slope of the roof. Not sure how to crawl up there and avoid sliding off 😅. I appreciate your help brotha.

Awesome Videos!! I have a three dollar question for you.. I built two dormers on a 12 12 pitch, one going north and one going south.. I joined the ridge boards at the same elevation as the original ridge.. now I am having a hard time trying to figure out how to do the ridge shingles?? I am installing the rolled ridge vent.. No. While esthetics is important a dependable and wind tight roof is more important. It's a lot easier keeping a straight line with the corners cut. Not cutting the corners does take a little more time.

My cap was installed fine i think, except they used an extra shingle at the top like an extra wide deal then the ridge shingle sits on that but is about 2" shorter than that one below it. Which were all loose and i could stick a bar under the entire length. Somehow it only leaked on one side.. had to rip the whole thing up and put down paper and new cap.. i overdid it though.. used henry's under both sides the whole length.. next installers not gonna be a happy camper come tearout.. better than some ive seen though. Had one other month where whoever installed the architectural style used 3" 10p nails for the entire thing. Dude hade to have spent a few hundred on nails alone.. decking had to be replaced because you couldnt nail in it with all of those big ass nails.. the underside of the attic looked like some torture stuff..

1-1/2" nails are ideal.
@@AurumRoofingI went to buy the ridge shingles at Lowes and I found them to be brittle at least the ones I found open. Your tutorial 3 sheet shingles looks very flexible. Where do you get them? I need only 2/3 -3sheet ridge. If I get the entire bundle would they be brittle in the garage?
Which city/state do you do your work? Do you do roof installation work or just teach?
What's wrong with using slates or clay tiles? In England roofing felt is used for shed roofs, not houses.
is there any reason why trhese cannot be sealed down with mastic adhesive?
That can be an option, I don't see why not. Just make sure you still follow the nailing instructions.

Hey bro. I’m finishing up my roof now. I glued and liquid flashed each shingle nailed up to a ridge and glued and liquid flashed the crap out of the valleys. (Florida hurricane zone)
Maybe I wasted a bunch of time, but I didn’t make anything worse, did I? I was thinking maybe you want it to not all be monolithically sealed with tar. I used like 5 buckets.
I problem with doing this is that no matter what, no knowone can ever stop water or condensation from coming through the shingles or flashing (especially where the shingles meet with one another). The trick is to know how to let the water out. Doing something like this can cause trapped puddles between the shingles because the water has nowhere to go, if it's a steep roof, you may be able to get away with this because the force of gravity is in your favor but for flatter roofs under a 6/12 pitch you may have problems. This is why we never use those spray "sealers" from t.v commercials because it's only traps the water that will eventually get through. Good luck.

Linear footage and roof pitch have a lot to do with price here. Depending on how many feet you have will depend on what a roofing company may charge you. Unfortunately, this is a very difficult question to answer. I would recommend you get 3 estimates before making a decision. Thank you for your comment.

Our minimum charge is $325 (labor and materials). This sounds like something we might consider a minimum charge.
We have always cut our coners and never had any problem with it if you cut it straight it better be straight or it will look crappy THOMPSON ROOFING.

Actually you just cut too much off and nailed above the tar line
I cut my corners off but still nail 2 nails per side and have never had this issue. Cutting those corners helps deflect water away from the hip joint underneath the capping. I've done it this way for over 25 yrs and never had any caps blow off. Cutting off the exposed parts later after straight cutting your caps gives risk to cutting too hard and end up cutting into the shingles.
