    100% agree with the drip edge , except I apply a thin tar on it so the tar paper sticks and can’t pick up in high wind. The shingles should not be used for your starter strip, because the tar strip on the first Rowe can’t stick to a pile of sand properly. Spend a little extra and use starter strips.

    Three tab shingles are a totally different install than architect shingles - nailing pattern is crucial. The underlayment should be under the dripedge on the rake and over the dripedge on the eaves. Spend the extra on starter strip also I don’t use felt paper, deck armor or tiger paw come in 10 sq rolls and has numerous advantages over felt paper…

  • @Josh-ww5kz
    @Josh-ww5kz 3 роки тому

    Should actually have a overhang on the eaves and rakes, otherwise water will just wick underneath, probably wont actually leak because of that because of the type of drip edge used but still a possibility. especially with 3 tabs, you dont want to use the same 3 tab shingle for a starter because 3 tabs dont hav a tar strip on the tab part. so nothing will be holding the bottom half down from the wind at the eaves. easy fix is just to use your hook blade and cut just below the tar strip and use that as a starter. shingles arent meant to be bent like that at the transition, if its overhanged too much it will bend over and ruin the shignle at the bend allowing for rain to eventually get through it as it weathers.

    • @nitrojunkie22
      @nitrojunkie22 2 роки тому

      @@theamerican4609 The main reason is, the tar strips are designed to heat up and adhere to the shingle above it, creating a water-tight seal between the shingle and the ones above it, and bonding each shingle to the other. If you live in an area prone to high winds, then you would use 6 nails per shingle, with one nail on either side of the notches. Also, IF you wind up with roof damage, either by water, high winds, what have you, and you install the nails through the tar strip, you negate any warranty.

    • @theamerican4609
      @theamerican4609 2 роки тому

      @@nitrojunkie22 That little strip doesn't create a water tight seal! Its job is nothing more than to keep the shingle down. There is nothing in a roof that is considered "water-tight" unless perhaps if you decide to silicone between the plywood sheathing....its all about moving the water over multiple layers to cascade down.

    The nails need to go a bit over the tar. So when it seals, the nail isn't under the tar strip.
    It's the same with architectural shingles. There's a white line. That's the tar line. Some people say nail there cause it's a double. Don't nail there. You have about an inch above that line to nail. Anything on that line, or under can start a slow leak over time.
    But who am I to say anything. If you like what you've done. Good shit.

      It really depends, if your using a hammer and nails or a air gun and coil nails, tar paper is best too use staples for bigger jobs, using hammer and nails would take a long time, using a compressor and gun has alot of impact you usually drive the nail in way too far but if you turn the gun down you drive the nail in not enough, now days we use a product called synthetic paper, it is made out of plastic and cannot rip with your hands it is far more superior then tar paper and can be installed with a stapler or gun
