Oliver’s Army and Watching the Detectives are great songs as well.
I feel like you are setting him up with Oliver's Army
@@joshuawebb6694 yeah but... it was a genuine term used over in ni!
His song "Allison" is very beautiful, it's worth checking out
My favorite!! ❤️
Karen Cogs mine too! Plus the Linda Ronstadt cover.
"Watching the Detectives", "Radio', "Allison (my aim is true)", so many more!
yep...probably the best songwriter of his generation, along with Shane McGowan and Strummer/Jones
This song was written by Nick Lowe, but not to detract from Elvis Costello’s song-writing ability - he was and is brilliant.
Nick Lowe wrote this song. It’s timeless. Elvis himself has written so many great songs himself. He had a great way with turning a phrase.
Check out Everyday I write the Book. The video is great.
I never knew that Nick Lowe wrote this but, now that you mention it, it definitely DOES sound like a Nick Lowe composition! lol :) I love Nick Lowe!
@@Pixelologist Nick Lowe also produced this version as he did most of Elvis Costello's output at that time. Two great artists collaborating making great music, we were blessed.
I consider this the best version.
@@Pixelologist how could you possibly miss that Nick wrote it, pixel?
and Costello wrote Girl's Talk which Dave Edmunds' and Lowe's band RockPile recorded. Symbiotic rock relationship.❤
It’s so beautiful to see someone experiencing this for the first time!
You could spend quite a lot of time digging into the Elvis Costello catalog -- "Alison", "(The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes", "Watching the Detectives", "(I Don't Want To Go To) Chelsea", "Radio Radio", "Pump It Up", "Accidents Will Happen", "Oliver's Army", "I Can't Stand Up for Falling Down", "Brilliant Mistake", "I Hope You're Happy Now", "Uncomplicated", "Veronica" and so many more...
Shipbuilding.
Oh I forgot about Accidents Will Happen, another good one
The Other End of the Telescope. All This Useless Beauty.
That's a very good list. You got all of the biggest ones, but some other good ones are "Less Than Zero", "Lipstick Vogue", "New Amsterdam", and "Beyond Belief".
You mean Declan MacManus.
I recommend "Pump It Up"!
Elvis Costello is my favorite artist off ALL TIME! He’s been extremely prolific, many al ups, many styles. He’s a true genius and fantastic songwriter. His lyrics are intelligent and some are as cutting as others are funny. His early albums “This Year’s Model,” “My Aim is True:” His great country album, “Almost Blue,” his 2018 album, “Look Now,” and his more recent collab with The Roots, “Wise Up Ghost” are all wonderful. He has 30 studio albums, with very few dogs. So glad you featured him tonight! More, please!
Love Costello, this song is awesome, Oliver's army is another great one.
If You Like Elvis Costello's voice you will love his song "Oliver's Army" J
Oliver's Army, is a great song by Elvis Costello.
You mean Declan MacManus.
Never noticed til now how Costello's voice sounds like a punk version of Bruce Springsteen, along w the driving beat behind him. Other great tracks to checkout, Pump It Up, Radio, Alison!
Yes! "Pump it Up" is my favourite Elvis rocker, and "Veronica" is his song that most touches my heart.
@@OronOfMontrealhere's to excellent taste. Pump is my EC fave too... At 61 it still gets me pumped! Lol Cheers from Portland
@@OronOfMontreal You Declan MacManus.
When he first came onto the scene he was classed as punk /new wave . My musical hero
The bassist is putting in work.
"Allison" and "Pump It Up" really good too
Oliver’s Army is brilliant too! Another great reaction, you’ve hit a rich seam of musical talent!💖💕🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Elvis Cos-teh-low. 😉 Check out Veronica (official music video).
The cool kids loved Elvis in the 80s lol. Oliver’s Army was his biggest hit, and rightly so, great song.
You mean loved Declan MacManus.
Everyday I Write the Book!
If you haven’t hear it before. I’ll be the 1st. to say it “You’re a good Sport” 👏🏽 That’s always the right attitude to have. Much respect ❤️
This song was originally written by bassist/singer/songwriter Nick Lowe and released in 1974 with his band Brinsley Schwarz, a British pub rock group. Elvis Costello released it in 1978 with his great first band, the Attractions. We could use some peace, love, & understanding right now!
And producer
Yep. The important note is that Lowe produced several of Elvis's early albums.
@@judeforartssake You mean Declan
Love many of his songs! I believe they called this type of music New Wave!
Costello, rhymes with cello. 😏😊
Hey, thanks to your patron Lauren for suggesting one of my all time favorite bands! Check out his "Watching the Detectives" and "Everyday I Write The Book".
Epic Tune! He has so many great songs. Very diverse musically.
Shot in Vancouver, B.C. while on tour I believe.
YES YES YES
HELL YES ! ! !
When 9/11 happened I remember driving through town blasting this song over and over with tears streaming down my face. I couldn’t think of any other song that said what I was feeling right then.
Has nothing to do with this song, but I worked overnights at a data center in Las Colinas, going out for breaks on the night of 9/11-9/12 was eery realizing how quiet it was with no planes circling DFW.
Oh....thank you SO MUCH for this!!!! Elvis Costello has always been a favorite of mine. I've seen him live a bunch of times, and his enthusiasm to entertain is ALWAYS amazing! He's still writing songs (don't think he can stop himself) and performing (well...pre covid, anyway)
Elvis has such a repertoire listen to as much as possible he is legendary...
Elvis is legendary as for Declan well that's another story.
LOVE Elvis!!! If you want to hear some badass drums and bass check out Lipstick Vogue
thank you jayvee . he has a million songs . his first 5 albums are spectacular almost any song Is worth checking out . a man out of time or watching the detectives , allison just a few of the many . thanks ! When your done with Costello you’ll need to listen to Graham Parker and the Rumor . But first Costello 😍
By the way the Attractions are quite a good group of musicians
Yep, Costello and Parker are 2 great ones.
@@otisdylan9532 You mean Declan MacManus.
You MUST MUST MUST MUST react to his cover of "She" in the OST of "Notting Hill". :) I love that song and it always makes me think about my mother :(
One of my favorite artists saw him and the Attractions/ Imposters at least 20 times. This is actually one of the few songs Elvis didn’t write his producer Nick Lowe gave it to him. Elvis’s music covers many genres from angry punk to crooner ballads and everything in between. You will love Pump It Up very upbeat and listen to a ballad Almost Blue.✌️❤️🎶
Watching the Detectives is an Elvis must... glad you found him
Would suggest his entire first album to you, “My Aim Is True”, as an introduction to an incredibly talented and versatile composer and musician. He puts on a great show live, too.
Elvis Costello is such a cool dude! I requested “I Want You” (studio version) before and I’m renewing that request now! You will love it. I am positive of that! It’s one of the best songs of the 80s, in my opinion! Also if you want to see his acting, and if you have Netflix, check out Season 10 episode 20 of the sitcom Frasier. He plays a musician in a cafe, and he is so funny! He also had a great show called Spectacle, where he interviewed musicians, and I just discovered that there some episodes here on UA-cam!
💜💜💜
I've seen Elvis Costello many times live, his family are from my home town, Birkenhead..... 👍
In the late seventies Elvis Costello single-handedly reinvigorated my love for rock-n-roll. His first three albums - My Aim Is True, This Years Model, and Armed Forces remain among my favorite albums of all time.
You mean Declan MacManus
Allison, Angels Want to Wear My Red Shoes, Everyday I Write the Book, Girl's Talk, Wayching the Detectives...So many Great songs....
Elvis Costello is very unique. I love his music. I recommend his song "Alison" next.
Shame his name isn't unique.
So many great songs. Such a great singer and complex songwriter.
Great song! You should check out Allison next!
Costello was one of the leaders of Punk rock's 2nd or New Wave of the late 70's. Pump it Up, Oliver's Army, Green Shirt, Watching Her Detectives, Alison, The Beat, I'm Not Angry
My favorite Elvis Costello song.
You mean Declan MacManus.
@@mariogmajner6549 OK Mario we get it , you know his birth name. Heres a wee medal.
I saw Elvis live a few years ago. I must have seen scores of live concerts and performances over the decades, but his was truly one of the best I’ve ever seen. His musicianship is incredible. The only bummer was he didn’t do ‘Veronica’. I love that song. 💖💖💖💖
You mean Declan MacManus.
His nerdy persona was the perfect anti statement against all the spandex/hair bands. He has so much style and depth. One of my all time favorites. He as so uncool that he was too cool.
I have to say, my favourite by him is his beautiful cover of "She" from the film Notting Hill.
Elvis is my all time favorite artist!
You really have to like this guy. He did a number of songs, that I would happily listen too. Damn it, he even made Jovaughn sing in tune! Lol. A priceless moment.
Oh man, I LOOOOVE Elvis Costello. Great choice 👍🎸
Elvis is just amazing. a true master.
♥️♥️♥️♥️Love Elvis and this Song!!!!!
His voice is unique and I love this song.
Good theme song for 2020! Big rabbit hole you're in now with Elvis Costello
Declan MacManus.
So glad you reacted to Elvis, I love him. Please try Red Shoes, Pump It Up, Good year for the roses, She, etc.
I was hooked at "this wicked world". I love his phrasing.
"Pump it up", "Watching the detectives", "Allison".
Watching the detectives is a killer
My favorite singer ... Elvis is King!
Declan MacManus.
There are two songs that always get me on the dance floor, Michael Jackson's "Wanna be starting Something" and " Pump it Up" by Elvis Costello and the Attractions. They never fail me.
You mean Declan MacManus.
@@mariogmajner6549 Yeah, him too, lol.
his first album alone would give you enough songs to react to for a month. watching the detectives is my favorite. saw him five times, all in smallish venues.
my favorite concert of all time had elvis and the attractions, nick lowe and rockpile and mink deville. fantastic times late 70's.
"Pump It Up" was a good one by Elvis Costello and a great dance routine!!!
INDOOR FIREWORKS! You'll dig it! So cool! Thank you! Lifelong EC fan, here!
His whole album “My Aim Is True” is one of my all time favourites. Best ones in that album are probably “Angels wanna wear my red shoes”, “Alison”, and maybe “Less Than Zero”. But there are so many more. Sneaky feelings, Blame it on Cain, Welcome to my working week, the whole album. Anyway, my favourite one outside of that album is Deep Dark Truthful Mirror, in Costello’s album “Spike”.
FYI- It’s pronounced Elvis Ca-Steh(as in Stella)- Low
Wish I could like this more than once! Agree with every word 😁😁😁
Obsidianred 😁😁😁
It's pronounced Declan MacManus.
I love his song “Veronica”!
One of my favourites too
MY DUDE ! Loving this reaction. Check out "Everyday I Write The Book ". Totally different, totally great. .........PEACE !
FYI Costello is pronounced with a "tell" like "tell me a story".
Same as in Abbott and Costello ;-)
Costeeeelo 😂
Cah-stell-oh. There's always room for Jello and Elvis Costello
@@sinenominecc You mean Declan MacManus.
@@mariogmajner6549 😄 Yes, his secret identity. 😉
Veronica, Allison, Every Day I Write the Book...all great songs. 🥰
This songs always makes me cry.
More Elvis Costello, please. :) Always loved him! Please also check out his songs, "Alison" & "Everyday I Write The Book"
Really? Peace love and understanding? You have some smart Patreon subscribers! That is one of the late 1970 absolute classics!!!
Yeah man! I'm glad you finally got to the 'other' Elvis. Great, great song. Great reaction. Thanks, Jay.
Written by Nick Lowe- the Jesus of Cool. Check out his songs (1) "Cruel to be Kind", and (2) "So it Goes".
One of my favorite songs ever
He has so many great songs
A lyrical genius. Chemistry Class is a perfect example of his insane writing ability.
Love Elvis....... Such an unique voice..... My favourite song.
By the way Jovaughn..... You look great in blue.! ❤️
Declan has a unique voice unlike his name.
His real name is Declan Patrick MacManus, OBE (born 25 August 1954). His father Ross MacManus (born in Birkenhead, Cheshire; 1927-2011), was a jazz trumpeter who sang with the Joe Loss Orchestra. So he has a musical background. He has won multiple awards in his career, including Grammy Awards in 1999 and 2020
Oh yes! Been a fan since the 70s, and he is still going strong. His voice is even better live, his concerts amazing. Lipstick Vogue is a favourite of mine, there are so many to choose from though, Oliver's Army too, quite a few genre too. I see some other options in comments 😁 So happy you reacted to this, glad you appreciate that voice so unique. Thanks 🎸🎸🥁
PUMP IT UP!!! Just one of many great songs by Costello & the Attractions.
I wish to call attention to Elvis's flawless spin-move at 0.53
“Watching the Detectives”, “Green Shirt”, “Radio Radio” from the Saturday Night Live performance that got him banned from the show, “Allison”, “Pump It Up”, as just a few.
I saw him on his “Armed Forces” tour, and he was phenomenal. His most requested/yelled out song was “Green Shirt”. 💜
Love Elvis! As you can see from the requests below, he has a lot of great songs. Oliver’s Army would be another great song.
UK's Prince, massively talented guy
I always loved the Mystery Dance from My aim is true. Romeo was restless, he was ready to kill....
🐕. Super talented! 🐕
my stepfather's favorite artist, can hear him playing and singing Costello songs to my mom when I go by sometimes. Went to see him and Steely Dan a few years ago, such a fun musician, he had a really cool show called Spectacle that you might like, he did in-depth interviews and songs with other musicians.
Lots of catchy tunes
Declan MacManus.
His whole catalog is incredible. "Alison" is classic. "Veronica" from later in his career was co-written with Paul McCartney and is about his grandmother who suffered from Alzheimer's. "Everyday I Write the Book" is great too. You can't go wrong with any of his songs.
His voice was never deeper than on this track. He actually has many songs where his voice isn't as deep but still sounds amazing. Allison, Watching the Detectives, Radio Radio, She, Veronica, God Give me Strength, I Want You, Everyday I Write the Book and The Angels Wanna Wear My Red Shoes are just some of his many great songs!
“She” is another great Elvia Costello song
Costello #1
I can't believe nobody mentioned Good Year For The Roses. You have to listen to it now.
All around great song and great reaction brother
Ohhhh, my Elvissss...🥰😍🤗
My jam!
Pete Thomas is one of my favorite drummers.
As others have noted, Nick Lowe wrote this song. He also produced this version of it. It was meant to be very tongue-in-cheek.
The keyboardist is miming with Elvis Costello's guitar just to give him an instrument he could use. They were at a national park -- in Canada, I think, but I forget. I do know, however, that in the shot of them at night, that was just before they were chased out of the park because nobody was supposed to be out there after sundown.
The final shot of them collapsing in the corridor was literally them having just been woken up to film the music video.
Pump it up! I'm sure you'll love the music! Super catchy as well!
So happy you reacted to this
As a teenager I found it hard to get used to Costello's voice, but his sophisticated version of Punk Rock made it worthwhile.
It's great that you discovering Elvis Costello at the same time as Joe Jackson. They both began in the late 70s Punk movement but they both proved to be very versatile. (Like Sting of The Police, Jackson and Costello had hearts of Jazz.)
You mean Declan MacManus.
Check out "Alison" or "Radio" but this is my favorite of his. Or check out anything by Nick Lowe who wrote this song. Awesome!
