This was a huge underground club hit in the early and mid 80s. This was also a huge part of my early teen years. Love this song even today
💕💕💕
Yea, never get sick of this song, back in Scotland in the 80's, not forgetting the MIdge Ure influence in this song and this band. Great stuff.
@@grahamsutherland2054 Billy Currie was the synth guy
@@WorksopGimp Thanks John, I didn't know that makes sense. It was such a magical time of music , maybe I biased (probably)
I broke a window with this and my new stacked hifi I worked all summer for 😳
One of the best songs from the 80s
This was massive, also I never get sick of listening to it ❤
Ever.
I requested it in an alternative club to the DJ, he played there only on vinyl. Thank god he had the track on vinyl, I was so happy 😁
I was lucky to get to know Steve, even DJed for his last birthday and was honoured enough to perform at his memorial in front of his family.
It's pronounced 'Vis-ahge' btw :) RIP, dear Steve x
Lucky you! I'd have loved to have gone to the Blitz but lived in North Wales, so no chance.
Visage means "face" in English ... founded 1978 in London among others by Midge Ure... later then singer of the group Ultravox and also very successful as a solo singer . Fade to grey was a huge hit in Europe and ran in almost all clubs
I was 15 in 1980, 4 days after this was released. This and Vienna are my favourite songs even now.
not to forget Billy Currie (Ultravox) and Rusty Egan
This was HUGE in the 80’s, and the music video stunning. New Romantic era.
One of my favourite songs of the 80s. Steve Strange (the singer)was discovered at Blitz nightclub in London, a big influence on the New Romantic era. RIP Steve Strange.
He ran the club right? And was on the door deciding if people were cool enough to be allowed in
@@annother3350 Yes, he ran the club and decided who could come in and not. He turned Mick Jagger away in 1982!
@@CandleLight1974 I thought it closed in 81? Either way Steve was already a pop star by then so not likely to be working on the door of a club.
Still a floor filler. Helena Hauff used it in a techno set
Not discovered he owned the Blitz night club.
the french part in this song ,
Un homme dans une gare isolée
Une valise a ses cotés
Deux yeux fixes et froids
Montre de la peur lorsqu'il
Se tourne pour se cacher
translates to ...A man in an isolated station
A suitcase by his side
Two staring and cold eyes
Show fear when he
Turns to hide
wow so basically she said the same thing he said in English I didn't knew it thank you.
@@ligthbringer99 near enough 😉
YAY! This is from the “new romantic” era in the early 80’s. Steve Strange, the singer -may he Rest In Peace - had a club in London during those days called Blitz which was a magnet for the New Romantic subculture.
This is one of the most significant songs and performers in the burgeoning New Romantic branch of the New Wave movement, a product of the Blitz Kids, a movement in the early 80s, which gave birth to countless more subgenres and bands such as OMD, Duran Duran, and Culture Club. It may seem like a simple track, but it was groundbreaking at the time. Yes, I remember it well.
Steve was a Welsh icon of new romantics. This song can never feel old.
This was huge when I was a young teen. Still adore it! Steve Strange and his iconic look adorned the covers of my school books 😁
This is such an iconic tune, this one always gets turned up when it comes on the club classics segments on the radio here in the UK! It sounds so good when it’s on quite loudly in the car.
The singer Steve Strange ran a nightclub called The Blitz where the new romantic movement kicked off. The house band was Spandau Ballet. At one point Boy George of Culture Club worked in the cloakroom! Midge Ure the singer of ultravox was a member of Visage at one point.
Steve Strange also features in the video of David Bowie's Ashes To Ashes.
Other acts associated with The Blitz include Sigue Sigue Sputnik
Siobhan Fahey of Bananarama and Shakespeare's Sister
Sade
Little Nell who appears in film The Rocky Horror Picture Show which would make a good film review for your second channel for Halloween! It also features Meat Loaf
RIP Steve Strange and my New Romantic heroes VISAGE! They also had Hits with "Visage" and "Yesterday's Shadow". A brilliant Band of Musical pioneers at the forefront of New Wave music. (PS:) Steve Strange and his "Blitz Club" crew were in David Bowie's Video "Ashes to Ashes" walking on the beach with him.
Fade to grey was in the UK Top 40 in late Dec 1980 and peaked in the first couple of months of 1981.
It's a fine example of New Romantic music. Steve Strange either ran or owned the Blitz Club in London that championed the alternative scene. Also working in this club was Boy George (Culture Club) and Pete Burns (Dead Or Alive). Most of the great innovative electronic groups of the early 80s frequented this club.
If you come back to Visage, try Damned don't cry, Mind of a toy or Night train.
xx
Totally agree , damned don’t cry is amazing , Visage should have been as big as human league
Awwww yeahhhh!!! Blasting this in my headphones back in the day or dancing in the club smelling the fog machine....I still have my Visage LP 🖤🖤🖤
A total classic , thanks for reviewing
Always loved this song! Takes me back to my early pre-teen days and going to underground dance clubs with my buddies.
One of the best 80's songs. I love listen to the extended version. 😍
This was the new romantic movement which then turned into new wave. This stuff was innovative and just fun as hell.
Don't think that's right, New Wave started out of punk a bit earlier and in parallel to the New Romantic movement. At least that what I remember. The history of what bands were NW had been twisted over the years.
Historically inaccurate, New Wave emerged from Punk or rather was a sub-genre of Punk, I’d probably position Elvis Costello and the attractions in this genre along with the Police.
The song and video was years ahead of its time.
Such a cool new romantic song. Very club electronic dance.
I haven't heard this song for years and yes it was the early 80's Jayvee. Its easy to get lost in the video so I just close my eyes and listen. This I found easy to dance to back then though the beat can be quite hypnotic lol. It was wonderful to hear this again and it brings back some great memories thank you. Take care and stay safe please my friends, God bless you all love hugs and peace to everyone Mary-Ellen UK
One of my favourite 80's songs
Jay, it's pronounced Viz-arge. The English words are being repeated in French by the drummers girlfriend. The members of Visage were very influential in the whole early 80s look with the singer Steve Strange and Drummer Rusty Egan having their own club called Blitz which helped to launch Spandau Ballet, Culture Club and many other acts. At the time Fade to Grey was written Midge Ure and Billie Currie from Ultravox were also in the band.
The movie worried about the boy tells you all about the blitz club and all of what you've just said it is one of my favorite movies ever
There's no "r" in Visage.
@@KeithTheFA I know, I'm trying to spell it so Jay pronounces it correctly. If I wrote Viz-age I'm sure he might say the "age " part still incorrectly.
@@mthraves I don't know what's considered "correct"; there's how the band themselves would be heard pronouncing it, but British terms-made-titles can still deviate from it in other accents and still be considered correct. Just listen to how Nick Rhodes says Duran Duran, with his "d'chur-ahn d'chur-ahn"... ain’t nobody says it like that in the states, and he’d obviously never call it "wrong."
I personally always pronounced Visage "Viz-idge" in the same way I’d pronounce the same actual word in the American lexicon. But, I like to hear the actual Blitz Kids sayin’ it. So kewl! But, kind of a slippery slope to take on the role of pronunciation patrol.
My attitude is, as long as people are keeping the name alive, they can say it however they like! 😄
@@Cre80s I've never heard anyone pronounce it viz-idge!! How do you pronounce 'mirage'?!
The French lyrics are just a translation of the English lyrics.
For example, she says "devenir gris", which means "fade to gray".
This is definitely early 80's, I remember it so well, a little bit kind of dark period and then you also had David Bowie with Ashes To Ashes from the same period....
Steve Strange was in the video for Ashes To Ashes.
Yep yep the 8 minute version is where my memory sparkles! Steve also took over a club called The Camden Palace, which I went to several times. This played over club speakers was damned good.
Visage fronted by Steve Strange. He was one of the 4 people who are behind David Bowie in his Ashes to Ashes video.
Now, please do some Japan. Please!
Visage, say it like viz-arge. Belonging to the subculture that was called New Romantics, they took influences from punk, glam rock, electronica, and got banded into the New Wave wagon, very popular in the early 80s Visage was the Daddy of the New Romantics. The fashions spawned from this subculture defined the 80s. If you want to pin point where the 70s ended and the 80s began, you would point to bands like this. This too was a huge part of my teens. I lived, breathed this fantastic era lol.
One of my favorite under-the-radar 80's songs. Maybe it is just in the States, but I had never heard of this one until I started listening to a lot more early 80's synth. Midge Ure, the main force behind Ultra Vox, was also a founder of this band. Not early 80's, but late 70's, "Magic Fly" by Space, is a great synth song. Should give it a listen.
Steve! Oh my, the memories with this are multiple and so very enjoyable. I wish I had time to tell you!
True.....even the dancing, was Orgasmic(in those(New Romantic)-days) . 😍
The Blitz club was a venue which was run by Steve Strange and dj Rusty Egan. Steve Strange was the Door Man who was the one who decided whom came in. It was formed so kids who liked to dress up had somewhere to go in safety without the threat of getting beat up. Most of people who attended went on to have great careers in music, art and design and publishing. It started off the scene what became “the New Romantics “. It had a major influence on the formation of dance clubs in the UK. You should be able to find a documentary on UA-cam about the New Romantics movement well worth watching.
I love the visual art in this music video. Love the makeup and symbolism.
Steve lived not far from me in Porthcawl later in his life. He was quite a character, Great song.
I used to be a night club DJ in the late 70s and early 80s. I played this a lot, it was a great dance tune. It worked well with Simple Minds, Phsycadelic Furs, the Human leage, Ultravox, Gary numan, OMD, Depeche Mode. Blancmange and Softecell
I was at their concert in 2013🙏🏼😍.
Nice reaction like usually.
I remember when you react to worldwide Alphaville hit "Forever Young " You have been very surprised and amazed by the vocalist. Now after nearly 40years you can check how Marian Gold from Alphaville sounds because the is new symphonic version of "Forever Young "
Iconic as new wave had just begun. King's Road London, great gear market and Boy George's shop close by. The height of the times - cool song.
Still get goosebumps
Good reaction! This is still such a fantastic song!
I've got the 12" version and absolutely brilliant.
It’s or was New Wave, loved this song then love it now and I wasn’t even in high school yet when it came out, music for us is a universal language don’t care if it’s got bits in French, German or Swedish or any other language, New Wave was about breaking down barriers, being different to conventions.
Pronounced vis, like his and arge like barge...so vis-age ... Means face in french....this was brilliant played super loud at the New Romantic Clubs I'd go to in the 80s..dressed up to the nines and dancing all night....cool times ❤
Iconic. RIP Steve Strange.
Was 16 years when I heard this song the first time. I was totally hooked!
YES! SOOOOO GOOD!!
This is one I regularly play at our record party's, the Spinners Group, we call ourselves. It always gets turned up loud. What a classic.😁📀🎶❤️
Never get tired of hearing this xx
Huge in 80's clubs.. You zoned out to the hypnotic beat. The girl is Belgian I think.. She's repeating the English lyrics in French.
Chris Payne wrote the tune in 1976.
One of the best songs of the 80s RIP Steve.
Amazing track! 👏
You have learned so much since the early days of your channel! The reference to New Order's Blue Monday was perfect. Here are some suggestions for your to react because of their uniqueness: Placebo, The Pixies, The Jesus and Mary Chain and Peter Murphy. You could also revisit The Smiths 🤗!
It was a new Sound, i never forget this master class Sound wow
I so miss the late 70s early 80s. What a time to get my musical grounding ❤️
WOW! I totally forgot about this song. I used to play this constantly ❤❤❤
Visage was one of the pioneers of electronic music back in the 80s along with Gary Numan, Ultravox, etc... You got that perfectly :D Also keep in mind that this "electronic" music is actually played live, even the drums (except for the drum machine they used as a "click track") since there were no sequencers at that time to arrange the whole thing!!!!
Jayvee, there is a great documentary film on The Blitz club called,"Blitzed, the 80's kid's story". Steve Strange (lead singer) basically set up a Studio 54 type environment at the Blitz and Rusty Egan(the drummer you hear) was the DJ. They played Roxy music, Bowie, Kraftwerk. And a whole new genera of music came out of that. It was called at that time, "New Romantic". Ultravox, Spandau Ballet, Culture Club, Duran Duran , among others came out of this British movement. It was meant to be more elegant than the punk movement which came before.
I was young when Visage released this song. Each Time I Heard it I was afraid. I am older ( a senior 😁) and I like this song, one of the best song of the New wave period. And I am pride, the female singer sings in French.
Best regards from France
Visage - pronounced Viz-arje - means face in french. This is my favourite track ever. I had worked all summer to buy a stacked hifi system with large speakers. Mum had moved the speakers and one was on the windowsill (single glazing). I put loudness on, which is extra bass, and when you get that thump of bass in the last part, promptly cracked the window across the corner 😳 the singer here, Steve Strange, founded the Blitz club in London, was involved in lots of other music, and essentially created the New Romantic movement in the UK. Blitz kids from the club were asked to appear in David Bowie's Ashes to Ashes, and many became famous in their own right. Spandau Ballet, Midge Ure of Ultravox, Soft Cell, Bananarama, even Sade I believe was a Blitz kid. The 80s were amazing (I was 15 in 1980).
midge ure the singer out of ultravox created the lyrics. hes also the guy that suggested it needed French background vocals. one of his friends girlfriends could speak french, so he hired her to do it. the original instrumental version was created from somebody out of gary numans band and ultravoxes band when they used to practice together. midge only had nine songs on the visage album so asked if he could use the instrumental mess about to create a tenth song, he then named it fade to grey
Chris Payne and Billy Currie used to jam the early instrumental version of this with Ced Sharpley joining in on drums, in-between rehearsals during Gary Numans 1979 tour. It was originally called 'Toot City'. Billy took it to Midge Ure in the early days of Visage and he turned it into the masterpiece it is.
Yazoo - Only You
Such beautiful music from that era❤
This was from 1981.
The girl is saying "devenient gris" - French for "becoming grey". The rest are the lyrics that Steve sang translated into French.
I was 9 when this came out, but it was still played when I started to frequent the dancefloors - at least at the kind of places I went to in Germany.
...people who grew up in the 80s will understand....
I was born early 80's but the first time I remember hearing this song was on one of those 80's compilation CD adverts on Channel 4 in the daytime in the 90's. They would preview which songs are on the CD for a couple seconds each but so many of them stuck in my head. There were rocks adverts, pop, soul, 50's to 80's compilations etc. A lot of my favourite music outside of hip hop came from these adverts, decades later. You appreciate the creativity much more listening back as an adult, too.
Truly don't understand why so many (definitely British) people in the comments are insisting visage is pronounced with a random extra 'r'? It's French so pronounced veez-aahj, the last part rhymes with the end of mirage (or the US pronunciation of garage).
Listen to Ultravox for more of this sound.
What a tune 👍
I loved this song and the lady spoke in French .
Steve strange was in david bowie ashes to ashes video
Brings memories as I was a New Romantic fun times.
They sing the English lyrics in French. Steve strange also appeared in the David Bowie video for ashes to ashes. As a group walkings down the beach with a bulldozer and David Bowie’s mother.
It's pronounced as VEESAGE(Visage) . A song produced by Midge Ure from Ultravox . Lead vocalist is the late Steve Strange.
VISAGE is one of my favorite groups of the 80's, whomever recommend this, THANK YOU! Also check *Damned Don't Cry*
This song takes me backkkkk
Steve Strange - pioneer of the New Romantics and genius Welshman 😎
It's french but I'm not sure what they saying we had some really good music in the 80,s
Omg... This is one of my all time favorite songs. I constantly have this on my play lists 💖
Always takes me back to the 80s great song
This is Steve Strange and he had a club called the Blitz which was the place to be and Visage started out to make music for the club. Or so I’ve heard!!! Lol You should look him up sometime, he was a figurehead of the new wave/ new romantic movement in the early eighties!!!
This is pure New Romantics and New Wave.
One of my all time favourite songs! Was 19 when this came out!
A massive club song and very influential.
Steve Strange was also in David Bowie vids ["Ashes to Ashes"].
When you go to a place like 👍 disco it was amazing in concert place radio great song
Welcome to my world - when it was great to be different!!!
R.I.P. to an old friend Steve.
Steve Strange was an icon of the New Romantics in the 80s the best era ever!
This song is a masterpiece
classic tune from that era
This was was huge back then. UK 80's videos were often quite delightfully weird!
It's always been one of my favorite songs... So dreamy and catchy... I was fascinated by the video clip and the make-up when I was a kid
Excellent song.
The New Romantic era, where the guys wore more make up than the girls, and everyone was trying to outdo the next person with their wild, and wonderful fashions. The Kings Road was like a catwalk at times. This song is a mood for sure, I love it.
I have always LOVED ♥ this track :P Oh dear, another track I need to get from the 80's then :D (well on 12" Vinyl anyway. I have it on a few albums with various artists) I wish I bought all these 80''s tracks in the erm 80's to :(
This is my favourite song of all time. As French-speaker I can appreciate the lyrics. Visage were not really a band, they were a project. This song was about depression, being aware of your surroundings but being out of it at the same time, and wanting it all to end. The song was ahead of its time in terms of the beat, and the bassline was played on a synth using the Vox Humana setting. I really love the weird video as it has nothing to do with the theme of the song and yet it is sort of arty and theatrical, and very New Wave.
you can't get a more 80s music video than this! 😂
