Bruce Springsteen, Sheryl Crow, Bob Geldof, Nick Lowe, Curtis Stigers, Elvis Costello... whoever sings this song, it is always a masterpiece. I listen to it whenever I feel blue. Sorry for my shaky english. Best wishes from Italy.
@clint clint I went to his concert in Torino in 1988. He was able to say some words in my language, because his grandmother was from Italy. Wonderful !
Yes, he absolutely did. And damn near no one would have ever heard of it had not Elvis Costello made it into one of the all-time kickin' rock and roll songs.
Nick Lowe was, and is, underrated. He wrote great songs, produced great artists, played with great bands (Rockpile), and still putting out music today.
Wow!! I remember this. Bruce, John Fogerty, Dixie Chicks, Jackson Browne, Eddie Vedder, Dave Matthews, Bonnie Raitt. We need this song now, in 2019, more than ever.
Indeed - Bruce himself was happy to do covers and many of his own songs were covered. No one appreciates a well crafted song more than someone who is him or herself a good songwriter, even if it's not theirs. Always loved Bruces cover of Jersey Girl (by Tom Waits)
Funny to read people being petty and mean in the comments on a song about peace love and understanding. Oh well. Hey let the little stuff go. Life's short.
Just the fact that most(if not all)of this people voted for Obama(and his evil ideas) makes all of their art or music just repulsive and unbearable to appreciate or watch(you got to be blind not to see that). Just like the paintings made by Hitler are just unbearable to look at. Just my opinion, of course. I'm not even sure how I ended up here watching this...
Obama's "evil ideas" and comparisons to Hitler? I'm not sure how you ended up here either, but I think it would be better for everyone if you went and slithered back under whatever rock you were under.
In Florida in 2021, where we couldn't breathe the air for several days because of toxic discharge from a fertilizer plant (which we were assured was NOT the cause!), allowed to pollute so a few could make a LOT of money, all I could think of was the line, "Where are the strong? Who are the trusted?" We are being sold out, people, without a thought for the future, only for present profits, and not OUR profits.
@@jaolin6042actually you're right on. I was working on the Kerry campaign, Max was campaigning for him and suggested to Bruce that they put on a fundraising concert. So it really was Max & friends.
It's quite simply a masterclass, lyrically and musically, in how to write the perfect rock'n'roll song that actually connects with people's hearts. Completely overlooked in 1974, every passing decade connects more hearts to it, and it now stands as one of the greatest songs ever written.
Doesn't matter if you don't like the performance. These all hands on deck renditions are often ragged but N Lowe's masterful use of a simple verse/ chorus chord structure is as powerful as they come. You can't help but feel it.......
Holy smokes I can’t freaking believe that I’m 65 I’ve seen a lot of concerts. I’ve seen Bruce Springsteen twice and seen all sorts of people that that that is just freaking amazing what a life blood lyrically musically, spiritually socially integrated with the amazing thank you thank you thank you.
Written by Nick Lowe in 1974 when in Brynsley Schwarz on the album New Favourites ... The Costello 45rpm cover came later in 1979 and its the template for this. Nick produced Elvis. DIG.
Cool bit of trivia here.... The exact same recording that appeared on Elvis Costello's record was also released as a Nick Lowe single, at just about the same time..
Oh, are you beautiful people who saw this I can’t imagine I’ve seen like answer 765 I think I think if I had seen this, I would’ve been a complete spiritual, emotional worldly awakening. I would love to be able to get my hands on a complete DVD, or whatever this entire performance that’s just amazing. This is just amazing life and hope and happiness.
Dibi THANK You! In the 80's if these guys got together to sing this I would have Listened, millions of people would have! Awesome to see so many people having Fun!
The people "cringing" ,kvetching, and being a-holes about this performance neither understand the song , the artists ,the event or probably even what EC or NL were about. It is what it is a really good performance by people who do get it. Those artist know they nailed it . You the whiners just feel dumb because you missed the point entirely .
One of the greatest songs written in the past 50 years! Read the words and you'll know why a big change is needed NOW. We need peace, love & understanding now more than anytime in our lifetimes! This version is great but can't match Nick Lowe's much less frantic solo version of recent years.
Opening ears and opening hearts to a song whose message needs to reach the corners of the Earth in this time of reckless division and destruction of our core values.
Nick Lowe tells the story that he was desperate to write his first song but every time he did so he'd play it and realise that he'd just re-written a Dylan one or a Lennon one or whatever. Then one day he came up with this and it slowly dawned on him that he couldn't remember who originally did it and realised that he'd acheived his aim. Yes this was his first.
@David Bradley I heard him say it in an interview years ago. Of course he'd be a good story teller wouldn't he. But isn't it possible that he did in fact write What's So Funny first and keep it on the shelf?
"There are always helpers. Look for the helpers." I thank Mr. Rogers and his Grandma for saying. Especially in light of the latest tragedy of 2021 in Boulder. Thank you too Nick.

Okay, just a few comments. Max Weinberg is "the glue guy" to use Coach Self's term. Probably the best drummer in Rock n Roll. One of the best songs ever.
Nick Lowe put it out as the B side of the single "American Squirm" with Elvis Costello on vocals and a band part-Rockpile, part-Attractions. Another winner from Basher.

This is truly great tribute to composer Nick Lowe and Elvis Costello.
It was written by Nick Lowe and the best known version is by Elvis Costello.

And, as always, Max Weinberg keeping that shit nice & tight.

Excellent performance by a bunch of legends...and Dave Matthews.
I love that Fogerty is the only one that doesn't need to read the lyrics off the floor.

Simply one of the greatest rock and roll songs ever written.
It's got my vote... But this version is not as good as Elvis Costello or Nick Lowe.. This ones got way too much stuff going on.
Bruce Springsteen is such an obvious and great leader. John Fogerty’s joy is infectious!
And Mad Max banging then drums. Top drawer, top drawer indeed
