Jack was born in Detroit in 1975. Son House died in Detroit in 1988. At some point their paths had to cross, they breathed the same air, and Son House's spirit lives on through performances like this.
The truth is that Meg’s drum work needs no introduction, her powerful drumming style speaks for herself, though she clearly brought her A-game to Glastonbury.
That song his son house thru and thru the god Father of the delta blues being played at the same volume as a few jumbo jets in field in England mr House would've been twitching with pride in that great one juke joint in the sky
A lot of chemistry. He never plays anything the same twice, and she knows where he's going and how to compliment it. I don't think Jack's as good when he isn't with Meg.
6:40-6:50 When I'm watching this section with my friends, I always describe this as 'Jack has just left his body. He's on some other plane of existence.' Best version of any White Stripes song ever, IMO. It's not their best song (they didn't even write it) but I've never heard a better example of what exemplifies Jack and Meg's electricity together than these seven and a half minutes.
@@darkjesy7736 I really liked at the Greek Theater 2003. Bad camera work (fan) but he's playing on his knees and he just about knocks Meg off her kit at the end. Also an alternate verse replaces 10,000 people with 'folded my arms and walked away and told her I'd see her on again on judgement day'. ua-cam.com/video/iaxo0T4doqg/v-deo.html
Genuinely don't think you could watch Glastonbury these days and see a performance with this much attitude and a crowd that is actually enjoying it as much, just doesn't happen anymore
4:54 you can see him start to go then by around 6:07 hes gone man gone he goes off he's rockin" it like a man possessed from there on out!! Love it!!!!!
@@jimmygray4072 Jack White draws a lot of inspiration from Son House, not just the music, but the way House plays -- alone, stripped down, just clapping sometimes, raw in voice, in guitar. House is totally passionate as well he keeps in contained in a small space. The spirit of Delta Blues expands, spreads and the world doesn't even know that it's happening.
The version with that is called Death Letter/ Little Bird is the best I have ever heard he really starts at the level he gets to on this one at the end
Spot the Zeppelin... it's everywhere. Heavily inspired by In My Time of Dying (as Zeppelin's "appropriation" was), but it's manic rush and tinpot timpani is all White Stripes. Love it!
...while this young man REALLY gets down with the song, I am betting that he is the first to admit that the original by Son House is STILL one of the untouchable benchmarks for blues/ blues guitar. I mean I totally dig this and what the White Stripes are at their best and they COMPLETELY wipe the floor with the entire career of Clapton et al when it comes to tapping into what the blues truly is but, this still is not Son House. It can't be, and that is okay folks! Thanks for posting! ....
Can't really compare one to the other in my opinion - it's like saying the GT is nice but the Model T is the untouchable benchmark for Ford. One paved the way for the other but they serve different purposes. Son House was one of the inventors if he didn't lay the groundwork Jack couldn't have turned it into a GT.
You are so correct sir ! Jack is a southern guy now and an excellent neighbor here in Nashville. He said it himself, if he’d not heard John the Revelator , only vocals & handclaps, one man against the world he never would be who he is today. Thank You Eddie “Son” House.
absolute classic version of this song, couldnt care less of megs technical ability because her style works so well with jacks guitar, wouldnt have it any other way, want these guys to get back together soon as possible
that boy can play the blues..I watched "It might get loud" and the interaction with The Edge and Jimmy Page was amazing...I too am obsessed with him now. I think he will be remembered as one of the greats....
The wonderful White Stripes featuring the incredible Jack White: my favourite musician of the last 20 years. Vibes also out to Meg, undoubtedly Jack’s best musical partner throughout his career. #TheWhiteStripesForever
More evidence proving why Jack White may be my favorite musician. Ever. One time I read an article that pondered the idea that Jack, like the story goes of legendary blues artist Robert Johnson, sold his soul to the devil to get this talented. There is no end to the musical genius of this man.
That's what I like about Jack White (although less in the raconteurs) he doesn't just sing the song on the album and then walk off, they actually embellish it to get the crowd moving
Her drumming in this is sublime. Love her minimalist style. Pure perfection.
She’s amazing like Ringo she plays to the song.
The greatest band of the 2000's without question.
Agree 💯
The Strokes
Meg is one hot tamale !!
No love for Black Keys?
For sure! Love me a whole lotta of Jack White 💜

She's probably the 7th daughter. LOL! Jokes aside, Love her and love the WS.
Can we just appreciate that they're playing a son house song to thousands of people who probably wouldn't even think that's a real name?
It's actually an adaptation of a Robert Johnson song "Walkin Blues". Covered later by many others.
@@clarkewi I dont think so, they have always said its a cover of Son House's Death Letter Blues. I mean the lyrics are basically exactly the same
masterful. Some of Jimmy page in Jack white I think.

We get it. You're a "good 'un"
Meg's left eye @ 1:39. What an awesome capture!!!
61 is the greatest road ever
I know lots of people hate Meg White's drumming, but I love it! It's sloppy and powerful.
its one of the best parts about the white stripes
Her drum work may be simple but keeping up to him and sounding good are not simple feats! I give her props! You rock Meg!!
Thomas Zed Meg is adorable
Yeah. She's kinda really hot in my opinion.
A lot of chemistry. He never plays anything the same twice, and she knows where he's going and how to compliment it. I don't think Jack's as good when he isn't with Meg.
There was always such amazing chemistry between them. How I miss the white stripes!
God Bless the White Stripes. Stunning band.

black pool is better than this it was a good concert
You’re reading far too much into what is quite simply good music, but hey that’s only an opinion.........
The other live version I think is better - jack falls to the floor in a shamanic trance, no shit, not staged.
1. Livid Sydney 2003 Version
2. Bonnarro 2007 Version
3. Nova Scotia 2007 Version
4. This one
5. Blackpool Version
6. New-York 2002 Version

I think her drumming was a perfect compliment to his brillance!
Jack and Meg are in their own world
This was the best live show I ever saw... still loving Jack White over a decade later...
It's simple sound, but it's so intense and emotional that you don't listen this, you feel it. Brilliant
there are two versions of this song. the original by son house, and this one. no one else should ever touch it!!
Period.
Together they made f.awesome blues songs.LORD!
this, is the most amazing thing i've ever seen. I have only one word to describe it. DAMN
Rock n roll forever!! Meg White is such an original!! I wish her and Jack would reunite just for one night!!
This is great rendition of the Bluesman Son House. Great performaance. One of my favorite.
They made it their own
4:54 you can see him start to go then by around 6:07 hes gone man gone he goes off he's rockin" it like a man possessed from there on out!! Love it!!!!!
I play it on and on.This version.My favourite.Love Meg.Love Jack.
Thst guitar i so wish i had holy heck thst would be amazing
Incredible tone
Jesus Christ, that tore through my soul and spit me out shivering.
Megs drumming powerful and sexy what a great duo
Love how she bounces on the drumkit
Jack plays this song as it should be. With a snarl on his guitar licks and a savagery of spirit and the knowledge that he is doing his mentor proud.
You are right. This is one of the best performances of this song by them on youtube.
incomplete without grinning in your face. I just love it when jacks puts it in there. but still dope. good find.
best guitarist ever. not technically or anything, but his style and his passion beats all.
Right. And you can see the passion just awesome
you havent seen Son House......i think someone has been studying mr james

One of the best live performances ever recorded on video.
Great style , passion groove and kick ASS performance 🙌❤
They really feel the music and each other
Love this band, Love this song, Love this man
just fucking amazing
Genius, Genius, Genius
their interaction here is flawless.
not like they ever muck up but here its wonderful. they always play the best gigs in the UK.
Feels like a two-person Led Zeppelin. Amazing talent.
This is probably my favorite version of this song...fucking perfect!
black pool os better
Best version. Period.

The three best sounds in the world....rain drops, the ice cream truck, and Jacks Kay...
Damn! That was f-ing brilliant. They really are one of the best bands to see live- if not THE best. They give it 120% every time.
Jack white has unbelievable guitar control, and for two people to headline what is probably the biggest festival in the world, thats amazing
Death letter got to be my favorite song to hear and watch the white stripes play live.

Meg Whites facial expression and body movement at 7:17 shows more than music
what a badass finish
This band is so fucking cool. A fucking duo. Wow I am blown away. Way away. Fucking rock n roll it will never die.
Less is more many times

They are both at a level that is so great I think it just comes down to a matter of preference for which style. Both blow my mind.
Ms. Frost, you are certainly entitled to that opinion, as I said, the White Stripes version is VERY ferocious and quite admirable!
and that is why music is great, two different takes both make great songs and art.

the looks meg gives jack the entire time is just...very very sensual? That sounds about right

This is one of the greatest moments in history, feeding son house to the masses. Modern people haven't seen anything so real.
I am speechless! pure feeling and guts. They breathe the music; it is pure nature.

The most talented band ever! Thanks for posting such an awesome video!
Smashed it. Great timing awesome Sonhouse cover...
This very performance will be one of the last things I will want to see before I pass into the beyond. Thank you for the capture!
What chemistry! great song and beautiful performance!
Hard to listen to this after listening to Son House's masterpiece so many times.
