    I watched this video some time ago and was so impressed that I purchased the sharpening guide and during the last couple days I replaced the bearings in my Jointer and decided to use the tool for the first time and sharpened both sets of my Shopsmith Jointer knives.
    One set is carbide and the other not.
    Both came out as good if not better than new. WOW is the word for the ease and results.
    Had to run a board through the jointer and it came out so smooth and flat. Should have replaced those bearings 1,000 board feet ago.

      @@MyGrowthRings I haven’t yet. I’m working on a cutting board for my wife’s birthday while she’s out of town so getting the blades sharpened was time sensitive. I’m also going to replace 3 the 1” set screws with 1 1/2” because there are only about 2 threads on the wing nuts and where they thread in to the sharpening body. I understand why they didn’t use steel Allen head bolts threading in to aluminum but geeeesh, 1 or 2 threads holding the knife fixture is asking for trouble.

    Another idea - I have a table insert I’ve made for the conical disk. Now the jig is much closer to the table end. By use of the adjustable stop collar I can get excellent results and not be too extended. One time I did angle the jig at the end. I’ve a t-nut adapted face for the fence - making the fence longer.

    Great video again. I use the adjustable stop collar to lower the table. As a technique I use a sharpie and cover the bevel. It makes it easy to see the area sharpened and expose any knicks. I’m not close to the manual, but it states how narrow the blades can be before they need replaced.

    Scott… that is a tool with which I am unfamiliar. Before I got my Tormek, I almost bought a used Shopsmith sharpening jig on eBay. Fortunately, I was outbid. You see, I don’t have a Shopsmith Jointer or Planer. It would have been useless to me…. Or, I’d have spent a week trying to re-engineer it to work!
    After watching it in use, I must admit, it is quicker to set up, more foolproof and easier to use than the Tormek! And all in all, it is a lot less expensive too. Perhaps it would be worth it for me to find a used one and see what I’d have to modify to make it work in other brands of knives. After all, I only have about a dozen other projects going!
    I posted a “Final Thoughts on the Conical Disc” video this morning. However, in my sleep deprived editing, I made a seriously incorrect claim. With a clear head this morning, I’m gonna fix it and repost.
    You did a nice job with this demo, Thanks.

    I wonder why they didn't make optional use of the mitre gauge slots on the table and possibly the slots on the 510 or 520 fences?
    Another possible adjustment option would be to shim the fence, paper is around .1 mm ( ~ 3.9 thousandths " ) thick while playing cards are around .17-.25 mm ( ~ 6.7-9.8 thousandths "). There are ways of using feeler gauges as well.
    According to the inch calculator ( search rise run to degrees ) a 5 degree slope is a rise to run of about 1 to 11.5 so by lowering the table 1/8" you move the abrasive surface closer by about 11/1000 ".

    • @MyGrowthRings
      @MyGrowthRings  2 роки тому

      The reason they didn’t use the miter slot is so you can use the jig and disc on thenPowerStation with an extension table, which is the only table you can add to the Power Station. You could also use the jig on the Mark V with just an extension table, but they aren’t quite as rigid as the main table. Yes, a shim could work but lowering the table works great and doesn’t add parts.

    I did not know ShopSmith had this. I made a jig I use to sharpen on my 2x72. But back in the high school years of 92 -94 /i was taking Machine tooling class. I use to bring dads planer & jointer blades to vo-tech. I machined a jig to hold them and I would use their surface grinder to bring them to a stupid razors edge, I had a classmate that watched me pull it out of the machine & cut a sheet of paper with one. He then grab it from my hand. He said .."Oh , it ain't that sharp" (as he runs his thumb down the edge My blade. You could see a white yellow meat before the blood came gushing out) He was not the smartest guy there....
    I would be very surprised if life has not taken him out by now. He is also the one that.. left a large chuck in a lathe that had been polishing at 3K.... And then turns it on.. The Chuck Key went across the shop and stuck into a piece of Bullet proof glass like nothing .
    The glass goes to a shop viewing point.
    But I did have these 12" razor sharp blades in my bag every few months!!!!!!! Guess what? No One died!!! How times are different!!!!!!!!!

    Someday, can you show how to adjust the table so that the miter slot and the table saw blade are parallel? My 510 (I think) seems to be slightly out of alignment, but the instructions I found mention bolts that I don't think I have. It seems like it would be essential that the table be properly aligned for an activity like in this video, if you are relying on the fence to be parallel to the sanding disk.

    • @MyGrowthRings
      @MyGrowthRings  2 роки тому +1

      One of these days I will. The 510 has four bolts that hold the table to the half round trunnions. The instructions tell you to loosen all four bolts but you only need to loosen three of the four. Leave one of the back bolts tight and pivot on that point, making slight adjustments at the front of the table. You can use a saw blade or the sanding disc as a reference point. There are several videos on UA-cam covering this alignment. I’ll see if I can link to one. Scott

I do the end table next, to match it to the main table. Then do the extensions. Also Do not forget to reset the miter and fence again after you get the main table set & tight! Shopsmith would probably say not to use it because the jig was designed to clamp their tapered blades, but the clamping bar floats and I'm sure it would clamp just fine. I would just grind it to the same angle as the SS blades. Once you sharpen them once, that'll be the correct angle. Don't forget that for sharpening you don't tilt the table the way you do when using the conical disc for sanding wood. Best of luck, Bob. Scott

I think the grinding on your jig was from someone trying to do the exact same thing. My jet blades were not close to sticking out past the SS jig. So I'll just take them somewhere this time.

    Hi Scott! Can you use this sharpening jig with a flat sanding disk? I have two flat sanding disks and just got a SS jointer that I am cleaning and prepping for use. I assume the blades will need to be sharpened and would like to try this rather than sending them out for sharpening. Thanks!

    • @MyGrowthRings
      @MyGrowthRings  2 роки тому

      No, unfortunately it only works with the conical disc.

    I'm thinking about getting this kit to sharpen my jointer blades, too. Is it really as easy as you made it look? Also, I have the 510 model. Do they work the same, or are there any problems I should expect? Thanks again for the great content.

    • @MyGrowthRings
      @MyGrowthRings  Рік тому +1

      It really is that easy. The most important thing to remember is to make very minor adjustments in either the quill or the table, because even a small adjustment can produce a lot of grinding. There’s no reason to take more of the steel off than necessary.

    Any advantage to using a conical disk to sharpen the SS lathe tools versus the flat disk?

    • @MyGrowthRings
      @MyGrowthRings  2 роки тому

      No, not at all. Because the conical disc only makes contact on a small area it would be very easy to create facets in the bevel of the tools.

  • @spikechampkart55

    Really cool, what angle is that set at? Can it be done on the straight wheel? What grit?
    Thanks. I need my planer blades sharpened for sure.

    • @MyGrowthRings
      @MyGrowthRings  2 роки тому +1

      The table is set flat for sharpening with the jig because the jig takes into account the taper of the blade. It all comes together to give the bevel a 45 degree angle. I use P220 grit for sharpening, while SS suggests P150 grit. I find that works for grinding a nick out or reshaping the bevel, but 220 is all that’s needed for sharpening. Yes, you can use a flat disc with the fence offset, but it’s tricky and the results are not as good.

    I have a speed reducer, should I use it to slow the disk below 700? If so, how much?

      You could but it isn't necessary to run it slower, so you are really on your own there, Dave. Scott

    Thanks for the tour. I'm going to try out the jig I bought for this next week. Are you using SS conical sanding abrasives? It seems difficult to find pre-cut conical disks in 12" that are finer grit than the ones SS sells.
    Also, a little critique: I would lobby for you not reaching over the top of the running disc to switch off the machine at 14:55. Sets a bad example for us accident prone users : )

    Thanks for the video Scott. I have this (bought it when it was on sale) but have not used it yet. I have a 510 with a finicky fence. Assume I have to make absolutely sure it is parallel to the disc before starting. Also, I have the Shopsmith adjustable stop collar. If I was going to use that to lower the table for another pass to take more off, how much should I lower it.

    • @MyGrowthRings
      @MyGrowthRings  2 роки тому +1

      Actually it’s surprising to know that even if the fence is slightly out of parallel with the miter slots you’ll still get accurate as straight edges with this set-up, just as long as nothing moves. As for the adjustable collar, i’ve reached out to Shopsmith‘s Jim Mccann for an answer on the effect of the lower of the table. A mathematical equation which my dyslexic brain has yet to be able to decipher! The manual makes a suggestion of lowering it 1/32”.

    • @MyGrowthRings

    How frequently would you estimate the jointer blades should need sharpening

    • @MyGrowthRings
      @MyGrowthRings  2 роки тому +1

      It really depends upon your usage. In normal use I find I sharpen them once a year or so. Not too much of a burden, but infrequent enough that I always have to re-read the manual on my sharpening jig!

      @@MyGrowthRings so my previous thread on the possibility of “upgrading the jointer to a helical cutter head probably not worth the expense even if there was a readily available option since the primary advantage is the economy of the cheap carbide tips - still would have less snipe and probably quieter but probably not worth it. So now, you n addition to the conical sander ill also be looking out for the jointer sharpening jig! You should still be on SS payrole!
