Shrunk - 1st verse he’s filling out the forms, 2nd verse sitting in the waiting room, 3rd verse the convo with the shrink.
"A thousand shitty paintings wrapped around a wounded animal." 100% encapsulates how I feel waiting in a doctors office.
A. Watch the videos. A whole world of creativity surrounds this man.
B. Seppuku involves two steps. Cutting a square hole in your stomach, "spilling your guts". Then having your head cut off. Done to restore honor to your people, or to avoid betraying them under torture from enemies.
C. From some dictionary website: The name “sudoku” is abbreviated from the Japanese suuji wa dokushin ni kagiru, which means “the numbers (or digits) must remain single.”
So his "Social" isn't just a 9-digit SSN, it's also being alone, "waving with 10% of his digits", so to speak. He chooses uncommon words to get you to learn fuller context.
The "oven" line is about the burger meat, or coal on the conveyor belt. Going through the fire refines you into something better, like a diamond. Basic alchemy. The whole point of work- growth.
I thought the "she called my name out and pushed me into an oven" line was a Hansel and Gretel reference?
Hell yeah..
So this is actually there are 3 songs the first is get of the car. It's about him losing his friend to cancer.
The first verse is him filling out the paper work, the second is him waiting in to see the shrink, and the last talking to the shrink.
Kirby is his cat that is prescribed to him because of his depression.
Welcome to Aesop.. This is the easiest stuff by a LONG shot.
The genius of him is you have to listen to him over and over and then you'll understand him. He has the largest vocabulary in music but that's not what makes him great. If you listen to him more, you'll see... it's incredible.
yeah aesop first reactions are always interesting
Aesop uses an absurd amount of obscure references and metaphors and is essentially an active listening experience where you have to really pay attention to what he's saying and will likely need a dictionary because he's a genius and drops words you've never heard of like it's nothing and finds a way to incorporate it seamlessly in his music
The James Joyce of rap.
This is my fav artist of all time btw.
I remember hearing that he is considered the most verbose rapper there is. Something about him using more original words than any other rapper. I think they made spreadsheets to see who used the most words that did not repeat. I really respect his lyricism. I love intelligent music.
The important thing to remember with his lyrics is that nothing ever means nothing.
You’re absolutely right about the study that was done about rapper’s vocabularies. He’s at the top (by a pretty wide margin) and his vocab actually even rivals that of Shakespeare!
The break in the graph is monsterous, busdriver is close @ 3rd as it was recently revisited and myka9 is actually 1st by a preposterous margin. Aes is my fav, but it's not the suprise I thought it'd be to see him in 2nd, cuz if it would be anyone it'd be m9 - he's def the best tho, aes all day.
I'm pretty sure that study only used their first 20,000 words, and didn't use any of his stuff past Float. Aes is insane.
@@eidolononeMyka 9 is such a hidden gem a lot of people don't even know about.
Thanks dudes! Glad you’re playlisting these. His stuff is designed for multiple listens. Chuck’s 100% right though that they’re about his trips to therapy and his eventual additional prescription of raising a cat. He’s a master of taking mundane, or obscure, or super personal/deep subjects and painting these vivid wordscapes about them with tons of clever metaphors and quirky references. It’s what makes his stuff so enjoyable (especially for a word puzzle nerd like me); that there’s always something new to riddle out on each listen.
Trust me, you can't freestyle a song like Shrunk. Everything you were confused by was in some way a reference to psychiatric help itself. "Burger meeting purple pills" = taking his antidepressants after a meal. "Just before you pay up to filet yourself" = just about to pay whatever his insurance needs to painfully and difficultly open up (filet himself) to the psychiatrist (exactly the same with the seppuku line).
Easy guide, first verse he's filling out the intake forms, which is why he talks about his name, number, address, and why it ends with "thank you, we'll call your name." Second verse he's describing the waiting room and what he feels in it ("a thousand shitty paintings wrapped around a wounded animal" or "climbing up the stucco" for example). Third verse is the actual appointment.
think of a typical waiting room. A thousand shitty paintings wrapped around a wounded animal is the imagery of all the terrible dentist-office art surrounding a broken human in a waiting room. If you dissect any lyric in the song, it's describing the visceral and esoteric feelings of the process of going through therapy. Most of this is an extended metaphor. You aren't supposed to take everything literally, like "She called my name out and pushed me into an oven" is a metaphor for how it feels to be in that process of self-betterment and modern-day psychiatry.
If you approach his lyrics and look up the words you aren't familiar with, the whole verses start becoming more clear. Aesop is the furthest thing from freestyle. every bar is extremely carefully crafted.
Kirby is easily the most digestable song by AR
Maybe tied with Long Legged Larry 😄
some say he’s difficult, its funny he’s real easyy
"Awaiting panacea, channeling your inner Beowulf
In Purgatory, just before you pay up to filet yourself and others" its talking about entering the shrinks office and spilling your guts (fillet yourself) and talking about how others treat you
These two songs are from Aesop Rock's album The Impossible Kid. The entire album is about Aes's mental health.
Shrunk is absolutely about seeing a therapist. The first verse is filling out the intake form, the second verse is sitting in the waiting room, and the third verse is talking to the therapist!
The walls of the waiting room are covered in shitty paintings, he is the wounded animal.
Kirby is about his cat named Kirby!
Aes is the best rapper alive.
I dunno these bearded bald boys but I sure love the look of em
"Fifteen years, taking prescriptions, now a shrink like, "I don't know, maybe get a kitten!?" Meowwww
If yall down to hear another one that's not shrink related I would suggest "No City". Dope as fuck.
"pay up to fillet yourself and others" is the concept of paying a psychiatrist to dissect yourself and the people in your life. A huge part of therapy is talking about your life and breaking it down (fillet-ing)
Aesop needs to be listened to a minimum of 3x before even attempting to understand anything. Thats how its been for me anyway, 20+ years and its still the way I go about it.

1000 deaths 9-5ers anthem and big bang are my favorite tracks by Aes Rock
From Every Time I Die to Aesop Rock you got some of my favorite artists on here. Next time you're gonna surprise me with a Sadistik or UnityTX reaction eh?
Aesop is pretty difficult to understand on first listen, you gotta adapt and learn his writing style. Everything in here makes sense and is a chronological order of a story. First verse is him filling out the medical sheet and signing into the doctors office, second verse is him sitting in the waiting room and the thoughts going through his head, third verse is him actually talking to the shrink. It just takes a moment for it to click. Like you brought up, "channeling your inner Beowulf in purgatory before you pay up and filet yourself". He's saying he's in the waiting room trying to act strong or brave like the old hero Beowulf but once he gets called in to talk to the shrink he's going to be talking about all his issues/insecurities/grief and breaking himself down.
Especially with Aesop, taking a moment to review the lyrics on genius can help immensely. Aesop is a slowburn imo. The more you get used to him the more your able to recognize how much of a lyrical GOAT he is.
Should’ve done get out the car !
Aesop doesn't write dead lyrics.... pretty much everything he writes has some sort of meaning to it.
Guy in red has never owned a cat.
If only that were the actual case... -Chuck
@@KnightscastStudios I understand.
you guys are not even getting close to the lyrical stuff.
