Great tutorial! I've been looking for things like this for a long time. A few notes for anyone else watching this - doing as little EQ as possible should always be the goal, anything you can do to shape the sound before recording will help in the long run (obviously hard to do when emulating). Increasing the gain of a track after recording or using the limiter like you did will never increase your S/N ratio. Recording hotter is your best bet, normalizing tracks before limiting/compressing will also help, but this will reveal your noise floor also (background hiss and hum). If you're using a mid-range guitar, consider looking at better pickups. The differences between cheap-o Korean stock "duncan designed" types and actual Duncan pickups are huge (and will be multiplied in this kind of setting). Lastly, to Chernobyl Studios, I'd take a quick look at your guitars intonation considering there is warble across all 4 tracks when the notes ring out, tweaking that may help. Again, really happy you did this!
I have a ton of noise due to my cheap-o humbuckers. I'm looking to get them replaced hopefully within the next two months and will do a before/after video comparison!

I just stumbled across this video, and it’s really good. I had to laugh when I saw that a lot of the free stuff you use here (the pedais, the Emissary, following briefly using LE456) are the same free plugins that I will use. Amazing the quality of the tones you can generate these days with a computer and some basic gear. I have a Schecter JL-7, and those signature pickups thrusting through a signal chain like this is a beautifully, brutally, inspiring sound. Hey mate! Watching this all the way from Australia! Ive been trying to dial in a decent tone for long without success, Until i found this video! Just wanted to say thanks for your help!
This is nice ! I managed to recycle my old Ibanez RG-170DX with open-tuning A# (Breaking Benjamin / RED style) and it's nice ! I can hear the guitar cry anyway, I should really get a 7 string guitar x)
Hey Scott! Awesome Sound! How do I plug this into Garageband? I've been using Pod Farm 2.8 to play guitar into garageband, I'm just curious how I can get this amp sim into garageband? Thanks!
I use the DI box because the Focusrite 2i2 I used in that video didn't allow enough gain reduction for HI-Z input. The DI-Box turned the Hi-Z into a line, which allowed me to bring the signal down enough to where it wasn't clipping. I also used the Ground Lift feature too. If your interface works fine and you have good results, it's not necessary. :)
I am very new at recording and am using Sonar Platinum, so this video really helped me a lot with recording guitar tracks. The only thing I feel unsure of is what to do with the Telos RV SephIR WAV file. It may be common sense but as I said I'm new, thanks in advance for your response!
Hey there! Welcome to the world of recording! :) With the impulse response, you'll need to install Rosen Pulse Impulse Loader - it's free. Then you put it after the amp simulator, and then load that WAV file into Pulse, and then you're good to go!
@CHERNOBYL STUDIOS may I ask one question: I downloaded all the VST plug-ins succesfully, but for some reason the reaeq-standalone plugins (the ones you are using several) appeared in their full size when I first launched FL after downloading, but now they are just tiny boxes and I cannot enlarge them in any way. They are just tiny boxes now. Have you ever encountered this "bug" and what could be a fix for it?
hi and thanks for the video. my question is do you find using a di box nessesary? I've been plugging my guitar directly into my Zoom UAC-2 audiointerface and I've tried different approaches and still didn't manage to get same huge sound on guitars. I just wonder could it be the absense of a di box in my chain, because the noise level is pretty high, even when the Hi-Z mode on input is on. thank you
If you are clipping your DI signal when you're recording, even though you have gain staged into your interface correctly, then a DI box might be needed. Otherwise getting big guitars is all about recording them tight and processing them correctly. It just takes time and lots of practice!
Hey man, I was wondering if I should record my songs with a real amp/cab/mic or use a VST, because when I think about it, a real amp recording is still going to get EQ`s and tampered with, and the VST`s sound very good... so for the sake of simplicity should I use the vst? and most importantly will it sound just as good as the real thing? Thanks
Hey there, all the music you hear on this channel has been recorded with amp simulators. So you can definitely get a great sound that way! With some practice you'll get it sounding pretty real. Most of the big touring bands are using amp simulators and cabinet impulses for the sake of it being easier to get a reliable sound live. So you'd be in good company. I have a detailed Amp Simulator course for metal on Udemy. You can get it here for $15 - www.udemy.com/complete-guide-to-metal-guitars-with-amp-simulators/?couponCode=CS_AMPSIM70
Haha thanks for checking out the video - it's a learning process but as long as you enjoy the process, you'll enjoy your time learning to record and making music!
Hi ! I'm working on Studio One 4. I wanted to put the effets on a Bus that is directing a Midi Track but it doesn't work... Only the Rea Plugin works... How do I get them to work ? Thanks for your answer =)
@@ChernobylAudio666 I have a Midi Track with a pretty good kontakt vst, but I would like to apply those effects on it. But there's a problem, ONLY Rea is available in the inserts... None of the others is visible... I've installed everything in the plugin folder but there is nothing but Rea in my DAW...
Man, I'm absolutely not sure. :-/ The only thing that comes to mind is that you may be trying to process MIDI information with audio plugins which won't work. You'd have to have a stereo out from the Kontakt instrument (if you're multi-out) for the FX to work. However if it's just a single instance right on the track...... Would you be able to take a screenshot and post a link? Without really seeing what's going on I am not sure. Grab a screenshot of your Kontakt instrument and the channel strip please.
@@ChernobylAudio666 It's not the problem here. I'm sorry English is not my language -_-' What I want to say is that the DLL's are installed, BUT ! In Studio One, they are visible in the list, but not working at all, mid track or audio track, whatever, they are not displayed ! I tried in Cubase, and only the Emissary, the Limiter and the ReaPlugs are working. NadIR and TS-999 are not in the list, while the DLLs are installed properly. UPDATE : I had to redownload from another website to get them to work on Cubase ! BUT none of them still don't want to work on Studio One, whether on a midi track AND an audio track.... :( But I suppose it's because I use a trial version ^^
I loved the video !!! But I didn't get the master chain disabled part !! Can you please tell me what that exactly is and what I need to do there ? Can tell by ear that it's louder...
Hey there! Thanks for checking out the video man! What I mean about the master chain being disabled is that all the extra processing and such that I did on the Master chain is disabled, so you can hear the tones without extra processing on it. It's just a way to be more transparent with the sounds I created and the sounds you are hearing :)
CHERNOBYL STUDIOS thanx a lot for that bro !! But can u please tell me what exactly did u do on the master FX ? It would help me a lot !! (P.s. I'm still learning !! )
Thank You this video and plug ins have helped me out a ton! Is the Master Chain your referring to when you did the final mix all in one signal for the guitars? I'm new at this thanks for the help.
Hey dude! Thanks for leaving a comment - and yes the master chain is just the final bounce out on the stereo bus that had a few extra bells and whistles :)
Hey man, nice tutorial., I ordered a ultra di100 on ebay, i was wondering why the light is not on when i try to use it with phantom power, should i just get the battery better? It came with a battery inside but i think is death since the light does not blink(the unit was used but it was a buyer with 100 feedback and it was described as a working unit) so what i might be doing wrong? Sorry for sounding so noobish.
Hi Lolo! I'd definitely try replacing the 9-volt battery and see if that changesthing. The phantom power would work only from one of those big epic console boards in the studios. Let me know how it went - I hope that just replacing the battery will solve the issue!
Hey thanks for the reply. It does, I just can't seem to figure out how to load the ones you show. But I am new to it somewhat. I got Shreddage 2 IBZ but it's just not giving me that sound I'm looking for. What DAW are you using?
I use PreSonus Studio One 3.5 as my main DAW now. Previously I used Cakewalk SONAR. It's not Cakewalk by Bandlab and completely free if you want to try it out.
Thank you for the heads up and this tutorial. Those plugins wont work with FL, I don't want to learn a new one now. Thought about it but nah lol. I wish I could get that sound you made with what I'm using
It takes time but I'm glad my videos are helpful. If you want, I do have a premium course on Udemy that you can pick up. I've got it for super cheap right now with a coupon for New Years, it is really indepth about how I go about creating tones. Maybe it could help you further. Anyway man good luck and feel free to ask any questions and I'll do what I can to help! Your welcome! It's also your video that made me buy a DI box which I'm waiting for in the post, I've never heard of these till your video, I mostly play a Fender strat & want to do recordings with it I already have an audio interface (Steinberg UR12), I hope using the Di box fixes an issue I've had for so many years, that dreaded noise/ buzz when your not playing, I've tried to use noise gates but I don't like them because they cut the tail end of notes as they ring out. I bought one by the brand "Donner" which also has a 4x cab simulator.
So I noticed that the Reaper family isn't available for mac. Is it me or is there a way I can load them on to Logic Pro X? and in case I can't, can someone tell me how to translate the info on the plugins to built-in Logic plugins? Or maybe an alternative to these but on free plugins for mac? I would very much appreciate it. Btw, awesome video!
Hey, great video! Question... how would you eq if you dual tracked instead of quad tracked? Would you cut the mids as you did here? I'm using all these plugins for my new project, so i'm curious about your opinion.
Hey Frank! That question entirely depends on what your initial guitar sounds like and what your overall mix is doing. If you have a lot of low-mids and such, you'll want to cut or compress them with a multi-band. Watch out for palm-mutes, there is a lot of build-up of low-mids when you're in low tunings and doing the 'chugs'. :)
"6 years ago" my brain is wired to think that 6 years ago was so long ago that technology like this is outdated for today's standards like its the early 2000s or something. But no, 6 years ago from when I post this comment is 2017.... Its not that old. Great video btw
hey man, cool tutorial, thanks! can you recommend me free vst bass amps, and IRs?? it's on your plans to do any tutorial like this one but for bass?? thanks again!
Hey there Kristian! There are two free VSTs for bass that are pretty popular and are good: SHB-1 by Ignite Amps and TSE BOD by TSE Audio. As far as free bass IRs, I never really looked into that before! I'll need to do some digging and testing to see what I can come up with =) I definitely should get some bass tone tutorials on this channel soon, thanks for the suggestion!
Hey man great video, now that i managed to make all this stuff work i'll record 100% more easily. I only have 1 problem, when i change reafir mode to substract it completely shuts down the sound of the guitar, do you know why?
Hey there! When you do the ReaFir thing, you only want to be subtracting super extra crazy noise that can't be fixed by using a noise gate. Its kinda like the last defense. If you're having a lot of extra noise problems, I'd recommend a DI-Box that has a lift switch. After analyzing the extra noise, you want to untick "Automatically Build Noise Profile" because then it'll constantly run and update itself based on the output of the song and tone which would completely remove the guitar
CHERNOBYL STUDIOS wow man super fast answer you're a hero. That make completely sense, i think i don' t need reafir to kill the extra noise then. Now i only have to resolve that strange buzz i get only when i play with the pedal on which is not recorded. Can i maybe send you and image of the signal to let you know what i mean by strange buzz?
You will have noise when working with high gain amps , that's totally normal. (Hence the noise gate pedals and stuff like that.) However, if you have sharp metallic noises or even hear things like a radio song playing when you are resting your fingers on the strings and stuff, that is 100% a grounding issue and you'll need a DI-Box with a ground lift or have a look at the electronics of your guitar or, and the last resort, understand the electronic wiring of your house and see if anything can be done to clean it up.
If it's a grounding issue it'll creep up in your sound , but another thing you can try is when you are playing to move away from your PC. For example, turn your guitar away from the monitor/PC. Stand up and walk around the room. There may even be a specific spot in your room where there is no noise or a drastic decrease of noise. Electronics are a funny thing !
Hello, I recently purchased a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 but I have no knowledge of this DI box, can you tell me more? what is the benefit of plugging this before the 2i2?
Hi man! For this particular brand, for some reason, there isn't a pad or any way to control the input level of guitars or other instruments, so you end up recording very hot into the DAW and you're automatically clipping. The DI box helps you out because you can set a -20dB level as it passes into the audio interface, giving you a normal audio signal into the DAW. (IT also has a ground switch button that can help eliminate extra noise.)
CHERNOBYL STUDIOS thanks for the response, sounds like the box is a helpful tool for cleaning up the sound a little bit, keep up the good work with the channel, I enjoy your content, very helpful to me
Hi Oscar, I am sure that they would work, but I don't know for sure. Cubase 5 is very old. You may want to consider upgrading to a new version of Cubase or even try using Cakewalk by Bandlab, which is basically Cakewalk SONAR Platinum but now it's totally free.
I'm trying to figure this out... What do I do with the "Impulse"? What even is an impulse? It's just a 2 second audio clip. I just have the file downloaded. I'm using vsthost for the chain.
Hi Joseph! An impulse is a digital "picture" of the signal response and phase relationship of the amp that was used. By loading the .WAV file in a program such as NadIR, your signal will be passed through this snapshot, allowing you to get very similar tones/sounds. The .WAV file itself won't do anything, so it has to be loaded in and used with an Impulse Response Loader. (IR Loader.) THe most popular ones are NadIR and Le Cab 2 - but I'd recommend NadIR to you. I don't have any experience with VSTHost, though, but I reckon as long as you mimic the same order of the chain that I show in the video, then it should work out.
so much to take in, i'm old school but looking to cut down on my equipment, i have to hop and dive over amps and guitars just to get out of bed, never knew about this new age shit till i saw my son recording on his laptop with just a screen and guitar. why jebus why?! i seeketh guidance because im lost as shit right now.
Hi there Sinan! When you load the ReaFir plugin, you want to go to Subtract mode and then check the box for automatic analysis. You only want to analyze noise of a track that is not actually playing music. For example, in a voiceover, you'd want to record the ambient noises for about 20 seconds, then run ReaFir on it, and then when you've done that you'd uncheck the automatic analysis. Now it'll subtract those sub-lows and such from the voiceover you record. In terms of guitar, this is REALLY tricky, but you can put ReaFir just after the tubescreamer for example with your volume pot on, and your fingers on the strings. Don't play any notes - just record about 10 seconds of that noise or whatnot coming out, and then do the same as above. Sucking out frequencies like this will change/kill your tone a bit.
Hey there! No stems included, sorry about that. However, I have a full production playlist where I go from a song beginning to end and I did make those stems available. Check out that playlist here: ua-cam.com/play/PLjrmSFz21F0RTeM5zDndx7Bxt_z6XZ9ss.html
As a metal composer, how can I use a MIDI guitar sound and run it through these amps and get a better sound than the default MIDI guitars? I tried using this setup, but the clean MIDI guitar just doesn't get the same sound. I'm going to get the gear I need to run my guitar through it but, as a composer instead of a musician, I need to be able to write the music instead of playing it.
You will want to check out Odin II guitar sampler, the MIDI guitars won't work out. Here is my video about it and there is a 15% off coupon to buy it in the video description. Also I have a very indepth amp simulator guitar course on Udemy if you need some extra help. ua-cam.com/video/bjguMXMxt1M/v-deo.html
@@ChernobylAudio666 thanks for getting back to me so fast. I'll definitely check out the Odin II because, if you listen to any of the modern / guitar music I've posted on my channel, you can tell I need it!!! Also, I'm not a drummer and I really like what you do with the drums. Is there any way I can convince you to help me write some good drum tracks for my songs or at least point me to some good tutorials on how to write drum lines.

Hey Scott! Awesome Sound! How do I plug this into Garageband? I've been using Pod Farm 2.8 to play guitar into garageband, I'm just curious how I can get this amp sim into garageband? Thanks!
Huge tone, thank you you for the tips.
Do you consider that the DI Box is doing a lot on the guitar tone ? Or not having one is ok ?
I use the DI box because the Focusrite 2i2 I used in that video didn't allow enough gain reduction for HI-Z input. The DI-Box turned the Hi-Z into a line, which allowed me to bring the signal down enough to where it wasn't clipping. I also used the Ground Lift feature too. If your interface works fine and you have good results, it's not necessary. :)
Great video! What drums are you using?
You are amazing ! Thanks for this great tutorial I'll test it out soon! Yea
Awesome man thanx, Great tone, Never Disappointing.

Hell! This is awesome, thank you so much!
Sounds pretty nice, but I can't work with this delay at all... Probably my own fault though since I have no idea wtf I am doing.
Nice word dude i love the tones
Thanks a lot for checking out the video!
Hey man, sorry I can't help here. I don't have any working experience at all with FL. :(
hi and thanks for the video. my question is do you find using a di box nessesary? I've been plugging my guitar directly into my Zoom UAC-2 audiointerface and I've tried different approaches and still didn't manage to get same huge sound on guitars. I just wonder could it be the absense of a di box in my chain, because the noise level is pretty high, even when the Hi-Z mode on input is on. thank you
If you are clipping your DI signal when you're recording, even though you have gain staged into your interface correctly, then a DI box might be needed. Otherwise getting big guitars is all about recording them tight and processing them correctly. It just takes time and lots of practice!
@@ChernobylAudio666 thank you)
Hey man, I was wondering if I should record my songs with a real amp/cab/mic or use a VST, because when I think about it, a real amp recording is still going to get EQ`s and tampered with, and the VST`s sound very good... so for the sake of simplicity should I use the vst? and most importantly will it sound just as good as the real thing?
Hi !
I'm working on Studio One 4.
I wanted to put the effets on a Bus that is directing a Midi Track but it doesn't work... Only the Rea Plugin works...
How do I get them to work ?
Thanks for your answer =)
Hey there! I don't quite understand what you're trying to do. Could you explain again? You have a MIDI track and you want to use an audio effect?
@@ChernobylAudio666 I have a Midi Track with a pretty good kontakt vst, but I would like to apply those effects on it.
But there's a problem, ONLY Rea is available in the inserts... None of the others is visible... I've installed everything in the plugin folder but there is nothing but Rea in my DAW...
The Plugins are now visible on my FX inserts, but when I'm choosing them, they don't work... :(
Man, I'm absolutely not sure. :-/
The only thing that comes to mind is that you may be trying to process MIDI information with audio plugins which won't work.

What I want to say is that the DLL's are installed, BUT !
(P.s. I'm still learning !! )

Do these plugins work with FL Studio? If not what are you using? I'm sure you said it but I missed it somehow (for daw)

Bro how do you eq the palm mutes to get that thick and tight sound especially the bass part ?? Please I need some help
I would like to know this as well please and thank you
Try a Multiband compressor. Palm mutes are usually at low mids so try compressing those and play with the settings
CHERNOBYL STUDIOS thanks for the quick respons! Keep up the good work :-)
Happy to help, Frank. I appreciate you checking out the videos and leaving comments. Cheers!

"6 years ago" my brain is wired to think that 6 years ago was so long ago that technology like this is outdated for today's standards like its the early 2000s or something. But no, 6 years ago from when I post this comment is 2017.... Its not that old.

Randomly trying to find plugins and here I see this legend lol
hey man, cool tutorial, thanks!
can you recommend me free vst bass amps, and IRs??
it's on your plans to do any tutorial like this one but for bass??

Hey there Kristian! There are two free VSTs for bass that are pretty popular and are good: SHB-1 by Ignite Amps and TSE BOD by TSE Audio. As far as free bass IRs, I never really looked into that before! I'll need to do some digging and testing to see what I can come up with =) I definitely should get some bass tone tutorials on this channel soon, thanks for the suggestion!
Interesting! Gotta try it later
Im using FL but I don't know how to get it in my plugins, what folder should i put in?
Hey brotha, logged on to your site to subscribe, but it says it's been cancelled? what's going on with it?
CHERNOBYL STUDIOS so if it's a grounding issue would it be heard in the recorded tracks or only while i'm playing?
If it's a grounding issue it'll creep up in your sound , but another thing you can try is when you are playing to move away from your PC. For example, turn your guitar away from the monitor/PC. Stand up and walk around the room. There may even be a specific spot in your room where there is no noise or a drastic decrease of noise. Electronics are a funny thing !
Do you reckon these could be used with a Piano Roll/MIDI?
With a guitar instrument sampler? Yep, you could use these plugins. I did with Odin II basically :)
any idea why Poulin Lecab sounds completely different to NadIR with the same impulse response?
No idea, but Poulin is super old technology at this point so it could just be better coding?
Is there no more plugins? I didn't found any.
Hi thanks for the video. My DAW (Ableton Live 10) seems to crash when I load the Nadir plugin. Ive made sure im using the 64 bit plugin, any ideas?
Only thing is maybe try re-installing the plugin, restarting, etc. I have never used Ableton before so I'm a bit at a loss :(
@@ChernobylAudio666 sorry for late response - I just ended up restarting and changing the VST folder and it worked. Thanks :)
Thanks for this vid man! i just downloaded it earlier. I have a question though, how do i install these? All i see is ddl files.
Just drop those into your vst folder and thats it. When your daw scans those files you'll have the plugins in it
Hello, I recently purchased a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 but I have no knowledge of this DI box, can you tell me more? what is the benefit of plugging this before the 2i2?
CHERNOBYL STUDIOS thanks for the response, sounds like the box is a helpful tool for cleaning up the sound a little bit, keep up the good work with the channel, I enjoy your content, very helpful to me
Thanks a lot man, I really appreciate that!
Hi there! i have a question, is it works on cubase 5 this free metal guitar vst? you rock!
Hi Oscar, I am sure that they would work, but I don't know for sure. Cubase 5 is very old. You may want to consider upgrading to a new version of Cubase or even try using Cakewalk by Bandlab, which is basically Cakewalk SONAR Platinum but now it's totally free.
YOU JUST MADE ME DOLLARS!
Haha, glad to hear it!
I don't have any experience with VSTHost, though, but I reckon as long as you mimic the same order of the chain that I show in the video, then it should work out.
so much to take in, i'm old school but looking to cut down on my equipment, i have to hop and dive over amps and guitars just to get out of bed, never knew about this new age shit till i saw my son recording on his laptop with just a screen and guitar. why jebus why?! i seeketh guidance because im lost as shit right now.
okay, i've seen the effect vst but what is the GUITAR synth? because there is only amps and no instrument
If you want a guitar instrument, you need Odin II or Shreddage to program DI tracks.
@@ChernobylAudio666 is there free synth?
whenever I turn on the REAFIR VST in the subtract mode it kills all noise and i get no sound at all. What am I doing wrong?
The download link in the desc isn't a download link, it's a mailing list signup.
