    In this video I will go into detail about how you can program better MIDI drums. I'll show you how you can get more realistic cymbals and some ways to humanize your metal MIDI programmed drums.
    These tips can work with black metal drum programming, death metal drum programming, or just classic metal drum programming in general... or actually any kind of drum programming for that matter!

    I'm not a drummer and I've recently tried programming drums for a metal track for school. I already had the basics like velocity changes, velocity layering for my kits and "humanizing" the performance. That HH pedal tip hadn't even occurred to me. Good shit!

    Great tips! As a drummer, I couldn't help but laugh at the examples of bad drum programming that would be impossible to play on real drums. One of my friends is a guitarist who has very strange programmed drums on his project, and I suspect it's because he doesn't play. Despite that, I still enjoyed it because it was refreshing to listen to. I think it's totally fine to create "impossible" drum programming as long as the goal isn't to play identical in a live setting. We wouldn't be here without the ones who weren't afraid to experiment!

      It's kinda funny how we'll edit live drums to be tighter, but then we do everything possible to get programmed drums to not be as tight to sound more realistic. :D Hahaha

    Superb video Scott. Don't let the 'Metal' in the title put you off people (I love Metal like a tooth loves drills....) These tips are applicable to ANY type of drum programming. One really neat piece of drum software that will obey the 'four limbs only' rule, prevent 'crossing of arms' orchestrations and also diminish the virtual drummer's power during a busy fill is Jamstix by Rayzoon.

    Awesome vid Scott, every piece of info was useful. My main takeaways was using the different hi hat articulations and the slight shifting of the kit pieces being hit at the same time for more realism. Never actually tried that but hearing a real-time example shows exactly why it makes sense.
    I don’t tend to program fills from scratch as I tend to go with the fills in the drum library expansions of ez drummer2. A lot of the time the velocity/articulations are already done. However I always tried to look at it from the realistic point of view in the tempo of the fill.
    When I select a fill I always ensure it’s pre determined tempo in the library is as close to the songs tempo as possible. The logic for me seems to stem from “could a drummer do this in real time?”.
    Only issues I ever run into using ezdrummer2 is that some times the cymbals of some the predetermined beats/fills aren’t very loud and don’t cut through the mix as much even when the velocities are maxed. I definitely want to avoid stacking cymbals in the editor for the sake of their individual volume.
    Given the only control in ezdrummer2 for the cymbals is the overhead mics, I’m not overly sure if I want to push them too hard given some possible bleed from the overall kit creeping in. (Unless I’m looking at it wrong). Maybe perfect drums might be a better solution, if I’m not mistaken isn’t there independent volume control for the cymbals in its onboard mixer?
    Again, great video Scott, thanks heaps 👍

    Doing ride blast beats I always love to randomly add the ridebell in every now and then. I learned that technique from infant annihilators "blasphemian". It sounds so much better. The kick thing you mentioned is really cool too, never thought of that.

  • @LJ-qh5ni

    Some absolutely great advice on this! Learned a lot. Only other tip I'd give is specific to blast beats. When doing them, lower the velocity of the snare drum compared to the snare during the other, slower parts. I'm not a drummer by any means, but as far as I know, the technique used to hit a snare drum that fast during blast beats generally means the drummer will not be able to hit the snare as hard as during 'regular' drumming. It will also just sound way better. :)

    So when I’m programming the only thing that is max and no velocity changes are the kick drum
    If the band ( my band does ) use triggers *

    hi scott ., in metal genre i should put a velocity betwin120 to 127 on all drums ? instead of cymbals? couse in the mix when i add a gate and comp. low velocity sounds not good and low.

    • @ChernobylAudio666
      @ChernobylAudio666  4 роки тому

      If that is what sounds good with your drum samples, then go for it. Although I don't see a reason to add a gate to programmed drums. If you're using them on toms, export all the tracks into audio stems and then manually splice the toms and stuff. Works way better than gates!

    Hey Scott, great video. I just started learning midi drums and having a hard time having the guitars and drums timed together. I recorded the guitars along with a click track, but when I write the midi drums it's not always in time with each other especially during the faster parts. In other words I'm having a difficult time having the drums play the same bpm that the guitars are playing. How do I go about fixing this problem???

    • @ChernobylAudio666
      @ChernobylAudio666  4 роки тому

      Hey dude! What it sounds like to me is your guitar playing isn't as tight as it needs to be when being lined up with perfect MIDI drums. Ensure that you're recording at the BPM you actually want and really ensure you're tight with the click. When you bring the drums in you shouldn't have an issue. Alternatively, you can try recording your guitar parts to the MIDI drums and a click track at the same time. That may help!

    • @marcorodriguez7694
      @marcorodriguez7694 4 роки тому

      @@ChernobylAudio666 I see. The thing is the both guitars are in line with the click track. Pretty tight actually. But when I start using the midi I'm having a hard time aligning the midi drums with the guitars and the click track.

    • @ChernobylAudio666
      @ChernobylAudio666  4 роки тому

      If you're recording your guitars at 4/4 120BPM for example, the click will work at each beat in 4/4, etc. So it'd stand to reason that when you're programming your drums, you'd use also 4/4 120BPM. If the click is on point and your guitars are super tight but the drums don't line up - the only thing that isn't mechanical here is your guitar performance. When you start comparing human performance to mechanical clicks and drums, things can pop out some times. I'd try to write some drum parts first and then record guitars with the click and the drums playing and see if that helps out.

Just because I see Buddy Rich doing amazing things on the drum kit doesn't mean I should program stuff like that. @@ChernobylAudio666 I have a question. I use Reaper and it seems now your course is using cubase. So I won't learn how to do the shortcuts and stuff in Reaper. Is any of the course in Reaper. I know you can translate from one daw to another, and I am sure I would learn a lot, but I really want to know how to set up Reaper for better drums.
