almost 4 years later...i started with a D3500. ordered a D500 last night. i prefer DX as a birdkeeper for a living and a bird focussed shooter overall. even 4 years later i dont think im gonna be disappointed.
D500 has one tiny issue, its a giant eyed hoot owl and is quick to blow specular highlights by about 3/4 stop, hardcore testing with a light meter and test target proves that also
Hey Ken, You said that theres is no anti-aliasing filter on the D500, could you please explain the reason why its not used/used in some cameras? thanks.
Ken, as a D750 shooter, how does the dynamic range on the D500 stand up to it? Raising shadows in Lightroom say up to iso6400....does the D500 shadows compare well?? Cheers
I wanted to thank you. I had already ordered a 750 from B&H when I ran across your D500 reviews. Even though I started out determined that my next camera would be FF I considered your results and watched several of your videos more than once. Then I saw a video from another reviewer that convinced me. I bought a 500 and returned the 750 unopened. Thank you for having strong opinions and for speaking the truth as you see it.
I've been preparing myself to upgrade from the D700, this might actually be the one! I've always seen the D600, 610 and 750 as "downgrades" for the D700 and the D800 and 810 hasn't impressed me or been different enough. I would however miss that commando flash :/ A D900 announcement would be nice right about now :P
I am trying to figure out what camera is most suitable for me as i am starting with wedding photography for a backup camera. I own one FX body a D750 and dedicated my investment in glass. But now i am needing a backup. Would you recommend me going for this new D500 or going for something that is not as expensive and perhaps used? Please help
Since the d500 it’s a DX camera... can I use FX lenses on it? Is it going to affect image quality? Or will images just be cropped? (Since is a cropped sensor) ... please help!
Hi Tony, I just [urchased a D500. I had a shoot the very next day so, I did take the D500 but just as a backup camera (THANK GOD FOR THAT). I had the strangest experience, I put an SB 700 on the D500 and put it on AUTO TTL, guess what, the flash wouldn't fire! Yesterday for my next shoot, I faced the same issue. So, I made a small change in the Flash. I put the flash on MASTER, and it started working fine. Is this how it's supposed to happen or is it a glitch only with my camera? Please advise. The second issue, I set the camera to use the SD card as a "Back up RAW" (as using that in my laptop is easier, but when I inserted the SD in my laptop, there were no pictures in there. It's not backing up. Glitch? Or should I take it for repairs?
question for ya.. I have the D3 is the D500 a good upgrade or should I keep my D3? Im looking to get better quality images. I see differences between my D3 and D800 in image quality.
I have a Nikon D500 and recently got the Einstein........using a light source with off camera flash in conjunction w/ ambient light is new to me. I understand sync speed w/ the speedlight. What about sync speed when using the Einstein? (primarily shooting in shade w/ ambient light behind the subject of which is usually toddlers).
I shoot walking real estate tours with a go pro on a gimbal stabilizer and I really enjoy the quality, however I dont like the button system on the go pro, etc. So I am looking for a camera that will give me an excellent image with excellent switches/buttons, with a wide angle similar to a go pro hero 3. Lastly I will be using this camera also for shooting high quality real estate photos. I have searched for weeks and I am torn between a Canon 80D, Nikon D500 (like the quality of images), a Nikon D750, or the Panasonic GH4 (dont like the color output). Just looking for more input?
Thanks for taking the time to review. Sounds like a beast.....who cares if it's a crop sensor if the output is there. I imagine the cost of the d7100 will drop even further.
I shot alot of abandoned building and do metal prints. my d7100 when I try to print say a 24*36 it comes out as below good. how well do you think the d500 will work?
I can suggest you to look at D750 in that case, unless of course, you also plan on using the same camera for fast action shots, like wildlife or sports. With slightly higher resolution and with a full frame sensor, I feel the D750 will be better suited for you.
+TEMc IMHO I do not see much use of a D500 there. You can purchase a D750 if you want to purchase a new camera, as it has a full frame sensor so you can use it in low light scenarios, or use the wide angle lenses. D500 is more geared for genres like wildlife and sports.
Thank you l am a photographer from before digital l want to purchase my first digital camera. I need professional recommend actions l have some lens too that used prior with my other camera
Enjoyed your review, thanks so much!! Could you also do a d810 vs. video. I have a d810 but am planning on adding this d500 for the 10fps burst (wildlife/birds-in-flight) and to shoot 4k. Should be a mean combo.
Hey Ken do listen to you from time to time have been watching camera reviews i really like your no bs approach to this. The 7200 is something i ve been considering, but with this review your streight up thanks Ken. Can you shoot me your website cause you just show you small portion when you do a viedo. James
can someone help me please is it better for me to get a d500 or a d850 in dx mode for extra reach of dx for motorsport, will the pictures be better from the D500 or D850 in dx mode, I already have a D800 for everything else many thanks :-)
Using a borrowed Nikon D500 from BorrowLenses at the moment and you're definitely correct. Currently I extended my rental for another week, and I am already planning on purchasing one before I return it.
The camera looks great. However, when you said that if you had one camera, you'd ditch the D750. What is your view on the effect that would have on your best lenses? You have the 24-70 on there which is a brilliant lens but isn't wide on a DX. You wouldn't stick the 14-24 on here either... so if you DID only have one camera, would be satisfied with DX lenses or just accept the crop factor on the FX lenses?
+Alan Bloom D810 for portrait and landscape, D500 for everything else. and thats NOT saying D500 is bad for portraiture i dont worry about lenses, ive got nearly 200 lenses :P hehehe
Hi Mate! Hi from Australia! Please help! I have a Nikon D4 with Nikon FX lenses 24-70mm 2.8 VR / 70-200mm 2.8 VR ll and the /70-200mm f/4 and 105mm Micro 2.8 VR oh yes and 85mm 1.4G. The thing is I bought recently a nikon D750 but have made a decision to buy the D500 after your review. I rang the store where I bought the 750 only a month ago and am sending it back in exchange for the D500. My question is: Will all my FX Lenses work WELL with the D500? I heard resolution can be affected….true? Love your work! Thanks mate!
+Carlos Santos all your FX lenses will work fine, yes, but they will of course be cropped in their image projection. no, not true, pixel pitch is relational to that, not sensor size, there is MORE translational data per MM on your DX sensors than FF anyway......4.2micrometer pitch on the D500.
Thank you so much Theoria for your quick response! This is fantastic as I really value your opinion. One last question please: As you may have noticed some of the lenses I have are suited for portrait photography that I do often.Would you suggest I buy a DX lens specific for portraits? Or some of the ones I mentioned above would be ok? What are your thoughts on the nikon 35mm 1.8 for portraits? Thank you again!
I was always a super fanboy of their "Advanced" line of cameras. I started off with a D100, then a D200 and finally a D300 that I still run that to this day. I was going to try and upgrade to a D3 or a D4, but then this came out... I think my upgrade plans have changed.
+Snu the D750 is the D750, nothing has changed, only the PLACEHOLDER for everything shifts when a "fat girl" enters a crowded room.......things SHIFT ,.......value etc etc. nothing more
Would you recommend a D500 or D750 for dog photography - both action and portraits - and portrait use - both in studio and outside? The D500 is definitely better for dog action shots, but the D750 have the edge for portrait use? Man, it's a hard choice! Thanks for some great videos! :-)
Really do appreciate your honesty in reviewing this Nikon. Like you mentioned, many used to think you a Nikon phan boyee, myself included. Again, thank you for your no BS approach to telling it how it is. The D500 will be my first Nikon DSLR coming from Canon/Pentax. Was looking for better pixel pitch and dynamic range in the Pentax K3. The auto focus at long range, 300mm+ ( I shoot birds) was atrocious. Ready to get my socks blown off after the mediocrity of the a fore mentioned manufacturers. Cheers to you Ken.
Hi Ken, Thinking about upgrading from my D7100 to the D500. I'm doing more action/sports photography and it seems like the right move. I;m assuming that my lenses will be fine on the D500. Thx...I also have a D4 which I got from Roberts Camera for the $2,499.00 deal...Man, what a great camera!!
+Theoria Apophasis Those are great cameras but always felt lack of commander mode plain sucks for us folks who use that feature. I do understand why sometimes it is necessary when R&D dollars square into the equation. Also bear in mind Nikon wants to sell you their latest radio controlled flash unit which you might not buy if your camera has a commander mode. Bottom line...the money factor underlines demand and supply. People get excited when they see all the new bells and whistles on the new cameras; but there is no such thing as a free lunch.
Im hoping this doesnt kill FX. Im fairly new to photography and have a bunch of fx lenses including the 14-24. I would hate if all that was a waste :( Thoughts, ken?
I blew some of my Christmas bonus on my recently acquired 85mm 1.8 G and a new tablet. I was going to get the D7100 with my tax return but thinking about saving a little more for the D500. The specs look great on the D500 and I can see that Nikon got so many things right. I would love to see the photos possible with my Tokina 100mm 2.8 macro and my 60mm 2.8 D macro lenses for dragonfly's this summer.
The only deal breaker I have heard of so far for this camera is if you want it for video, the extra 1.5 crop could be a deal breaker. For me, I have never shot video on a still camera so as soon as the prices start falling I will be in the market for one of these bad boys. I have the D300s and always loved that, but this is just a whole new dimension. Well done Nikon, you might be a bit late, but you have arrived with a bang!
i tested a preproduction model. it was awesome, small and fast. i have no way to see the files but i did not notice a big advantage over my D7200. it is pretty good for a DX camera.
Thank you ken for your great info. on this camera, i was hoping this was going to be an epic camera. after the D5 video i had my doubts about the D500, and was considering the D7200 to go along with my D750 but now don't know maybe save up and get the D500. maybe both, i do like the fact that the D7200 has the same lay out as my 750, the 500 is like the D300 on top anyway. Hey on a different note i got my Tokina AT-X PRO 28-70mm F/2.8 AF lens. It is in mint condition. this is an amazing lens. You should try it if you haven't already.
+Mark Hartman D500 is first a sport and wildlife camera. None of those others can stand a chance against it with anything that moves. So what would be the point of comparison ?
Hi Sir , I'm from UK.. would you recommend D500 for wedding photography as I'm a wedding photographer, would this APC sensors stand up for it you think?? Thank you
Moved away from DX for now but the D500 looks great. I would rather put $2,000.00 into some great lens for my D700. Its good to see Nikon producing a camera of this quality for DX fans.
Some cameras just have a personality. Hasselblad have IT. Mamiya (RB67) have IT. And there are a few others... Nikon F2, Nikon F3, Nikon EM (odd little point and shoot that was in competition with the Olympus OM10 at the time). I've never owned a Leica but wish I did. D500 is everything you could wish for in a camera. Wish I'd kept the RB tho...
You said: "AF is bleezing bast". I say "It depends on the lens". I tested mine with the 58mm 1.4, and the AF is slow. Period. Have one problem with the camera so far - it doesn't like Lexar SD 128gb 1000x (150mb/s). It gives error after each single picture. I take out the card and plug it back in and it works again for few shots, then Err again. The same card works perfectly in D810.
Bro for a poor photographer with a budget of just 400 dollars, who wants weather sealing, uncompressed raw and full magnesium body, would you suggest either the D300 or D300s in 2016/17? are they relevant, even if we are willing to live with the 12 MP sensor limitation? I wanted to go for the D7000, but the sensor oil issue and the lack of magnesium alloy didnt impress me. Or shall I just take the bait and sell off my kidney for a used D3 which can be had for something over a little north of 1100 bucks, or shall I just go for a Nikon D700? please enlighten this confused soul. Thank you
For photographers who do not necessarily need to use video, a DSLR is a nicer camera to use, rather than a mirrorless. A few years ago I switched totally to Fujifilm and bought a whole string of their mirrorless cameras. But more recently had a hankering for the extra responsiveness of a DSLR. So I looked at a D500 again. But soon found Nikon have kept the price artificially high, making it unviable. Which has sent all the potential Nikon customers over to have a look at the Pentax K3 III, which is now a better camera. It's unlikely I shall go back to a mirrorless again. For photography I prefer using a DSLR. Maybe Fujifilm might see which way the wind is blowing and produce a DSLR? We live in hope.
realised I may of made a mistake of buying the D500 due to not taking in consideration the lenses I have are mostly Fx over dx. An expensive mistake to make on my part.
+Theoria Apophasis In a few videos you've mentioned the superiority of full frame cameras for portraiture due to their inter-tonal depth capture that dx sensors can't match. In the time that you've used the D500 how do you think it would do with portraits? I need a camera that has a fantastic autofocus system and great lowlight for the concert shooting that I do, but I also do a lot of portraiture and can only afford one camera. Thanks!
the signal processing is awesome, and OF COURSE D7100 is 24MP and 3.8micrometers and D500 is 20MP and 4.2 micrometers nikon made the perfect balance between the downsides of DX and upsides of FF but i knew that HAD to be the case even before i got the D500 in hand.
+Peter Barnes this is ISO 51,200 nikonfocus.com/NIKON500/DSC_0246.JPG i couldnt even SEE the damn cat at all when i took the pic, only knew he was there :P
Thanks for the video. Watched a bunch of D500 videos and finally caved in and preordered the D500 kit. So much for my tax refund..............................
im a button sniffer ahhhhhh.Your like the nikon thats better than nikon, they should just send you a check, just to thank you for using nikon. heres a few mil for the years of contribution, thanks for keeping people thinking nikon, just do what you do.
Hey Ken, love the videos & how you tell it straight. I currently own a Nikon D7200, Nikon 35mm, Tamron 10-24mm, 24-70mm & the 70-200mm lens. I do still enjoy using the 7200, however, I am looking to upgrade. At this point, I'm shooting landscapes, wildlife, sports & starting little with portraits. So I guess I'm looking for a recommendation if this camera will fit the bill going forward. Let me know your/anyones thoughts. Keep up the good work!
Nice camera I'm going to sell my old d810 who said FX is better than DX this is a d810 killer less noise on high iso .faster and no popup and TIFF Storage format and that alone is a blessing
I was going to buy the D750 but after watching your videos, you convinced me to go for the D500 :) Definitely great videos buddy :)
For 4K wildlife video, does the D500 equipped with a Nikon nikkor AF-S 70 - 200 lens auto focus? Or must I use manual focus? Don't have the D500 yet?
almost 4 years later...i started with a D3500. ordered a D500 last night. i prefer DX as a birdkeeper for a living and a bird focussed shooter overall. even 4 years later i dont think im gonna be disappointed.
i cant find any d500 here in india :( wonder if anyone will ship internationally without it getting stuck at customs
Ken is a controversial guy, but his camera and lens recommendations are top notch.
Great video. I can't wait for B&H to deliver my pre ordered D500!!!!!
Whats your very initial comparison of the D500 and the D4?
Re: the autofocus calibration. Will it auto calibrate at any focal length on zoom lenses, and does it work on 3rd party lenses? Thanks for the review.
How does the dynamic range look compared to the D7100?
i want d500, how is it with skin tones/green shift?
D500 has one tiny issue, its a giant eyed hoot owl and is quick to blow specular highlights by about 3/4 stop, hardcore testing with a light meter and test target proves that also
Is D500 better than new fugi
Hey Ken,
You said that theres is no anti-aliasing filter on the D500, could you please explain the reason why its not used/used in some cameras? thanks.
+Vijay Mahendran elimination of moire' however many mfg. are going away from the use of same.
man ken gets really happy when he finds an actual good camera
Don't be disrespectful Gunne...
Ken, as a D750 shooter, how does the dynamic range on the D500 stand up to it? Raising shadows in Lightroom say up to iso6400....does the D500 shadows compare well?? Cheers
its the highlights that clip about 3/4 stop too soon. i confirmed that in my software with test shots on my Sekonic meter and software with shots.
What"s the crop on the 4k video. I read it's 2+? Thx
+Todd Stoilov basically micro 4/3, which is no damn diff than a 4K Panasonic G4
only the results matter.
+Theoria Apophasis Thx. The widest I have now is 24mm so I will have to pick up something wider for video.
would you buy it over d810 if only have fx lenses
+BrianSlayTV D810 is still king of portraits and landscapes
D500 smokes it for everything else (and still does great portraits)
Low ISO? You slated the D5 how does is compare Boss?
I'm torn between the Panasonic gh5 and the Nikon d500.Which would you choose?I respect your opinion.
So basically, get a D4 for a little more caysh if you plan on doing portraiture, sports, product etc? Or did I miss something?
Would the D500 be good for astrophotographers? It sounds like the high iso is great, but I worry about the crop sensor. Thanks!
not a great choice there, no….. D810 yes.
Thanks!
how does the image quality compare to a fuji
🙋 quick question Ken, does this camera work with the aged AF Nikkor Lenses? Like how the D7100 does?
+Charlie Balasa (CHRLMGNE) It has a built-in motor. So it can use any of the older style Nikkor AF lenses.
I wanted to thank you. I had already ordered a 750 from B&H when I ran across your D500 reviews. How does it it compare with the D750 in low light?
+Jim Shorts superior, especially in acquisition
im dumping my D750 very soon
I am thinking of the same..but how about the IQ? is it as good?
would you buy the d500 or go after a used low shutter count d4?
for WHAT use?????
Flyball dog racing. And random photo gigs like senior pictures and some weddings

who is the manufacturer of the sensor?

+Theoria Apophasis thank you

I would like to get my own d500 and 16-300 zoom lens. After I retire I just do t perfer the mirror less cameras

Hi Ken,
Thinking about upgrading from my D7100 to the D500. I'm doing more action/sports photography and it seems like the right move. I;m assuming that my lenses will be fine on the D500. Thx...I also have a D4 which I got from Roberts Camera for the $2,499.00 deal...Man, what a great camera!!
+Dave Myles yes your lenses will work just fine on same. D4 is a BEAST!! the D500 will shock you in AF speed and low light even over the D4
So no built-in commander, eh? Why Neekon?
+Marckymarc71 why whyyyyy. D3 is the same way, D4 too
+Theoria Apophasis Those are great cameras but always felt lack of commander mode plain sucks for us folks who use that feature.
WHERE THE D500 MADE IN ,THAILAND OR JP?
+kay chik thailand
Im hoping this doesnt kill FX. Im fairly new to photography and have a bunch of fx lenses including the 14-24. I would hate if all that was a waste :( Thoughts, ken?
+Chris Hay oh of course it doesnt kill FX
+Chris Hay FX will always have its place. Just like DX will always have its place. its safe for a beginner to go with a FX cam
You can use fx lenses on DX cameras. I gives higher magnification and better pixel clarity !
1:19 ...uuups and I would say this is nice foNi 500...Renesas sold the facility in Yamagata in 2014, as Toshiba did last year to Sony.
Thanks for the great review.
image quality vs. D810?
I blew some of my Christmas bonus on my recently acquired 85mm 1.8 G and a new tablet. I was going to get the D7100 with my tax return but thinking about saving a little more for the D500. The specs look great on the D500 and I can see that Nikon got so many things right. I would love to see the photos possible with my Tokina 100mm 2.8 macro and my 60mm 2.8 D macro lenses for dragonfly's this summer.
that would be a better choice :) ohhhhh everyone is in love with the D500, bottomless buffer, see in the dark,…AF tracking speed :)
If you read the user's manual, the D500 is not compatible with 15 Nikon VR lens if you shoot high ISO or long exposure.
+Jim Titheridge thats nothing, same as Panasonic G4......micro 4/3 4K video
anyone that says that is full of SH**T,....the 4K video is excellent.
80% of users never hit the 20% of features of the gear they posess...
+calizess true,
please respond I need the lens from my Canon
+Ali Beklik im on vacation :P
i tested a preproduction model. it was awesome, small and fast. i have no way to see the files but i did not notice a big advantage over my D7200. it is pretty good for a DX camera.
+Richard Haw but expensive
DR?
just grabbed a used U.S. model with 10k shutter for $1500.. cant beat it at that price!
D500 is rated for 200,000 releases so you're set.
Thanks for the review!
Excellent review thankyou. I have D300 which I consider legendary. I think is my new camera!
nice review. thanks for the info. lol'ed at your emphasis on not being sponsored by Nikon
Nice work man
Lol I live near fort myers, and I have never had a lizard jump on me in the middle of the night.
+Jeremy Judkins i have. twice :)
Have one coming 👍🏻, new subscriber
Thank you ken for your great info. on this camera, i was hoping this was going to be an epic camera. after the D5 video i had my doubts about the D500, and was considering the D7200 to go along with my D750 but now don't know maybe save up and get the D500. maybe both, i do like the fact that the D7200 has the same lay out as my 750, the 500 is like the D300 on top anyway. Hey on a different note i got my Tokina AT-X PRO 28-70mm F/2.8 AF lens. It is in mint condition. this is an amazing lens. You should try it if you haven't already.
D500 vs either Xpro2 or Xt1 comparison!
aye
+Mark Hartman
D500 is first a sport and wildlife camera.
+James R true true.
i mean sir what a best nikon d810 and new nikon d500 both
+rahul sunariwal "what a best" doesnt make sense in english
use a translator on google.
"Your nuggets will fall off and roll in the gutter" hahahaha
You said: "AF is bleezing bast". I say "It depends on the lens". I tested mine with the 58mm 1.4, and the AF is slow. Period. Have one problem with the camera so far - it doesn't like Lexar SD 128gb 1000x (150mb/s). It gives error after each single picture. I take out the card and plug it back in and it works again for few shots, then Err again. The same card works perfectly in D810.
Thanks... I wanted one but would never buy it without your review first.... now I have to wait for the refurbished models :-S
Thank you
weather sealing is a myth :) make it $450 and get a refurb D7100 :)
An expensive mistake to make on my part.
only if youre doing mostly landscape and portraiture,.......... ALL your FX lenses will work on the D500
thanks Kindly and love your shows. I have a D810 and do weddings so going to be using it as backup/first dance
This camera sounds great, but I wish it had 2 xqd slots instead of 1 xqd and 1 sd.
+Peter Barnes ehhh, i kinda wish it had no XQD slots, the buffer is good enough on SD cards
Thanks!
the signal processing is awesome, and OF COURSE D7100 is 24MP and 3.8micrometers and D500 is 20MP and 4.2 micrometers
nikon made the perfect balance between the downsides of DX and upsides of FF
but i knew that HAD to be the case even before i got the D500 in hand.
+Peter Barnes this is ISO 51,200

i couldnt even SEE the damn cat at all when i took the pic, only knew he was there :P
+Theoria Apophasis That's really impressive. Have you tried this camera with the nikkor 17-55 2.8?
LOW ISO PERFORMANCE??
they had to knock it out of the park so this way they don't have to release a successor for another 6 years
Thanks for the video. Watched a bunch of D500 videos and finally caved in and preordered the D500 kit. So much for my tax refund..............................
+raykrv6a TAX REFUND!!!!!!!
+Theoria Apophasis :) Yep, my D7100 is going on the shelf for now or maybe I'll give it to my neighbors kid and see what happens.
im a button sniffer ahhhhhh.Your like the nikon thats better than nikon, they should just send you a check, just to thank you for using nikon. heres a few mil for the years of contribution, thanks for keeping people thinking nikon, just do what you do.
2024 still might get one if it's cheap enough
This camera looks rad.
That is nice, I will stick with canon thanks.
Nice camera I'm going to sell my old d810 who said FX is better than DX this is a d810 killer less noise on high iso .faster and no popup and TIFF Storage format and that alone is a blessing
can I'll trade you my D800 for your d500.
Still waiting until I get Ren Kockwell's review....
+Rob Olliges lol
+Rob Olliges His review has been out for months. Apparently he doesn't need to use a camera to thoroughly review it.
How's the viewfinder compared to FX cameras?
I said it was gonna be EPIC, and I guess I was right :D
The only flaw I see is the bigger size than D750 and no flash
Take the camera for a spin, you won't regret it. I promise you.
