    As a 68 year old who is a new subscriber AND a new photographer trying to learn some of the art and find some good equipment, I want to say I really value your reviews and your narrative on photography. I appreciate the fact that you back them up with the downloadable files you offer. I inherited a D70S from my late photographer/sister, picked it up one day, caught the bug, and now I'm trying to sort out my next steps on equipment and education; your videos really help.

    Super detailed and thorough review. I can't believe this level of quality (HD, Drone shots, Full Res jpgs, multiple cameras/go pro view) is *free* on UA-cam - very comprehensive. I'm sure an insane amount of effort went into this production. Great job Jared (and team)!

    I think you wanna buy this cam if you are shooting sports and nature. If I wanna get best results in portrait photography, I think I'd to take a full frame body. But, still interesting to see it above iso 4000.. But- as he said, the D(n). - Bodies are in their own iso-league..

    You definitely nailed this review. Haven't found a better one yet of the D500. Action shots, portrait, wide angle, motion, it's all there and it's perfectly shown and explained.
    I'm now definitely looking at this camera as a follow up for my current D7000.

    For wildlife, real deal fast shooting like hummingbirds, or the real fast sports action this is the very best camera on the market even today on April 2020. The autofocus of the D500 is perfect. There is nothing like this on the market. If you work with real fast action buy the camera and be happy! Don't bother yourself with the mirrorless mania, full frame things... Buy the right lenses and the D500 will deliver every time when you most need it. Portraits, shows, concerts, studio work are too easy for this camera.

    I don't remeber why I subscribed to you 4 and half years back, but videos like these remind why. Production quality is literally top notch, the editing and cinematography alone warrant this channel being top in its class, but the information, the examples, the charisma in the video make it that much better. Thanks fro, Todd, and Stephen. you guys nailed it with this one.

    Finally a serious Nikon body that doesn't cost as much as the D5 does. I am most probably getting one later this year and honestly would be doing the same even if the D750 was coming out now - maybe the AF is the biggest selling point for me. Edge to edge coverage? Cross type points at the farthest left and right of the frame? F**k yeah, even the top end of the previous generation bodies didn't have that. Maybe the lack of a built-in flash is a bit of a let-down (I'd love to have one for off-camera flash control), but it's understandable from Nikon's point of view - they want to push the sales of the SB-5000 and the wireless controller.

    Fro, I just got back from shooting a Golf Tourny on memorial day. One recommendation I have is get in front when driving, I mean really in-front. I typically shoot about 20 feet in front and 7 to the side. Yes i'm at risk, but you get some really nice shots. I shoot full frame with a 70-200 for tee shots. Also with my silent shoot mode, I get the back-swing as well.

    From 5:54 onwards, the autofocus points are evenly spaced and fills almost the entire frame. This is all I need and points should be spaced evenly in such configurations so that we can get to the areas in the frame to focus. No other placements and gimmicks. Finally the camera manufacturers understands.

    Getting better with each review Fro,m Keep it up! About your comment that the D500 won't match the quality of the D5, I just don't find that to be true. In fact, I recently just sold my D5 for a D500 because I was unhappy with some of the dynamic range and the AA filter was really reducing some of that sharpness I love. I would argue they are both pretty equal. With each having a few strengths over the other. The D5 for anything ISO 2500 and up, the D500 for that extra DX reach and better low ISO images.

    • @froknowsphoto
      @froknowsphoto  8 років тому

      The D5 smashes the D500 into the ground all day any day. The "dynamic range" bitching that DPreview started is nitpicking at best. The D500 is no a D5 replacement in any way shape or form.

  • @monirul0814
    @monirul0814 5 років тому +5

    Full frame vs D500: decision is simple. If you buy full frame camera you'll have to buy all the expensive fx lenses whereas with d500 you can use dx and fx lenses and get x1.5 times reach in all lenses.

The visor you wore during the your talking points did cause for a difficult situation on lighting but it may have been beneficial to use a fill light camera right or bring the light a little further in front to fill in your left eye. Great review - mirrors everything I've seen so far with mine as well. I really think there's more to be heard about the metering issues regarding the high end highlights in some scenarios, but since you shoot RAW I'm not even sure you've noticed. ;)
    I do a lot of mass sports and event photo stuff with a high reject or non-purchase rate, and just can't handle processing that amount of RAW files - so the highlight thing is a little frustrating at the moment.
    The camera is spectacular though. I got a D7200 to up the sensor IQ over my D300 which was getting killed lately, but this camera finally solved all the issues I had every time I picked up or touched the D7200 vs. D300 in spite of its nearly-decade-old age, it handles so well I quickly knew I wasn't going to be sticking w/ 7200.

For basketball I am frequently shooting at ISO 4000 and the images are great. I was hesitant to make the move in part because of the price of the camera but I am glad I did. Please, nobody tell Jared that I shoot sports in JPEG.

    I have been looking around for new camera, since now it is 2017, event the D810 was announced, and Nikon full frame bodies are even cheaper now days, I can't get myself over to get a crop sensor body when all the spec on the D500 is soooooo freaking good. I want to have camera body that will do good video, portrait, sport and d500 fits everything I need. But I have to sacrifice f2.8 for this body?? At this point i don't have any lenses for Nikon or canon, I just borrow lenses from all my friends, really hard choice.

    One of the biggest things I hate about photography is the marketing lingo. "Pro" and "Flagship" cameras are just that to people until the next one comes out. Then they're semi pro or amateur. All of it is marketing for the camera companies and something for owners of said cameras to tell others in order to boost their own egos.
    The pros, semi-pros and amateurs are the ones BEHIND the camera, doesn't matter what you shoot.
    I do have a d500 btw. It's a camera with some nice features.

    Awesome review. Very thorough. My only comment might only be that I think during the D5/D500 comparison of the concert shots, his face was probably slightly sharper on the D500 due to the lack of an AA filter as opposed to the inclusion of one on the D5. Of course, it could be other things, but that was my thought.

    Nikon have really let down it's DX users with less than average DX lenses. You may get a couple of good ones however the range is limited. I do like the D500 - however I am not prepared to sacrifice my wide angle by sticking my FX lenses on the DX body. I will continue to use my FX lenses along with my FX bodies. In shooting weddings I don't really want to back up ten miles away from the couple in using my FX lenses on a DX body. That's just me.

      So? It still remains a great camera. You can buy one second hand at that time for less money :)

    As you say, there really ISN'T the amount of difference between the D500 and D5 that the price differential might suggest. The D5 is no good for me personally, however much I might like to own one, because it's simply too big and heavy for my small hands. Thanks for the D500 Nikon!

    Hey Jared, with you saying it's the best "all-around," I'm curious if you feel this is a camera worthy of things like weddings or landscape. It seems like it's geared more toward sports/wildlife (improved shutter speed for crop sensor, etc). Your thoughts?

    Great Review. I have d5300 and mainly shoot landscape. But from past few months i am considering wildlife seriously. So Im torn between d500 and d750 due to its versatility. But then again Nikon has much better lens options in fx lineup. Please help me out for my next upgrade.
