Just bought one of these used because I was really running up against a wall with my entry level D3500 and wanted finer control over my wildlife photos and I just can't afford mirrorless right now. Hope to use this for a long time!
The D500 is fantastic, I will not sell mine as long as I live. Last year I got an OM-1 (because o size of telephoto lenses) and used it for a few months, then I went back to the D500. Now I have replaced the OM-1 with a Nikon Z8 though, but the D500 will stay.
I have the D500, which is my favorite camera. Many thousand of shots with a very high keeper rate. I also have an OM-1, which I enjoy and use if I have to walk very far. Much lighter and I am not as young as I used to be.
We have had absolutely stunning, amazing, high definition picture tech for decades. If a camera delivered 10 years ago it's not going to miraculously change overnight, it'll still be taking those same quality photos in another ten years (if looked after and working) We will always get better tech moving forward, but that doesnt mean old tech isn't valid (pending on what it is/does) it's like an old car, it doesn't lose uts ability to do the speed limit because a newer car comes out. I think we are so brainwashed by obsolescence that we just invalidate things after they're a couple years old. Everything depends on your application too, what you need it for. The d500 is adequate for 99% of modern photographers still with few exceptions. That being said, I know photographers that can take better pictures on a Sony DSC w350 than I can on a Nikon d500, so it definitely comes down to the photographer and their eye/skill level as well.
Great video Rob, I will be sticking my D500 for some time, I love it and until the cost of the Mirrorless cameras / lenses comes down I'm happy using it. One thing that I don't think gets too much coverage on this type of video is the processing and storage aspects of something like D500 vs a newer 40+ mb 100fps camera. I think I would seriously have to consider workflow if upgrading.
Good to hear that your D500 is still getting some use now that you have the Z8. I think that definitely says something about how good the D500 is. Thanks for watching. 😊
Like a few others I can't get anywhere near the cost of mirrorless so plough on with a secondhand D810 and D500. D500, best shutter sound of any Nikon. I love to pair it up with a second hand Nikon 10-20mm DX lens and this combination is awesome. Two obvious negatives, you wouldn't get one for video and of course cropping is limited but apart from that it deserves to be one of Nikons flagships. :)
Had my D500 for ever, I take photos 365 days a year (literally) bomb-proof machine. Love the heft & the stunning quality captures. I enjoy the Nikon 300 prime lens but the other day for a giggle I dusted off the original kit lens it came with, fantastic results. Its my only camera & no plans or need to upgrade. 👍
I went mirrorless…and while I love it, there was still this pull for wanting to own a DSLR again. So I picked up a D500. Right when I held it, things just felt right. So now I can enjoy both systems.
Yeah, I think that's a good point - doesn't have to be one or the other. And if you're going to be using a DSLR you can't go far wrong with a D500. Thanks for watching. 😊
@Robert-Bishop I have the D500 and 200-500 F5.6 for wildlife and the Canon R7 with the 100-500 F7.1 and I use both systems especially the D500 in low light scenarios. The D500 is an all time classic camera
Cheers Andrew. Yeah, still going strong. Hope you're good - think we're not on for next week now, but hopefully can rearrange for not too distant future.
@@Robert-Bishopbrilliant, thank you and whilst I haven’t used my d500 much since purchase, your vlog gives me food for thought and makes me want to take it out on my next shoot 👍🏻
I still have my D 500. It's my go-to camera for when I just go out for a walk. I am also lucky enough to own a Sony a1. I took the same photo with both my D500 with the 16-80mm kit lens and my Sony a1 with the 24-70 mm G master and then asked several of my neighbours if they could tell the difference when looking at the images on my I pad. They couldn't !! Long live the D 500😂
I bought the D500 when it first came out and still really enjoy it. Although I also have a Z6, when outdoors I almost always find myself using the D500 rather than the mirrorless body.
I love my D500, 3 weeks ago I photographed our National Secondary Schools Track and Field Champs, I used my 150-600 and 70-200 and got superb images. It stood up well shooting close to 8000 images over 3 days. I have had good results capturing Birds and fast aircraft
It's great that these older cameras are still getting some use. I think it's rare that you need more than 12mp these days, unless printing your images. Thanks for watching. 😊
Yes! I do not leave comments very often. I am currently packing my bags for a small trip to Austria. My good old pal D200 next to me. It still is my main camera, giving me everything I need. Love the colours. Cheers, folks!
mine get used every day for wildlife photography, in all weather conditions and have never failed! i have three of them and will never switch to something else my oldest one has over 900 thousand shutter clicks , a little loud now but works great, my macro lens lives on that one now, other two have a 500 prime and an 800 prime battery grips on all three friends with z9 and z8 wish they never got ride of there d500 and want to buy them back from me
Thanks, I just ordered the new Z50ii same beautiful and capable sensor as the d500 but with the same processor as the Z 8 & 9 but lighter and less expensive zooms.
Sounds interesting - I'm sure there must be compromises compared to the Z8/9 but sounds like decent specs in the image quality department. Thanks for watching. 😊
I hope it's still good in 2024. I bought one secondhand this week to pair with my Sigma 150-600 sport instead of buying a Z8 and Z180-600. Early days but I'm loving it. Now to book a safari with the money I've saved 🙂
21 mp is indeed not crazy high but remember it is an apsc sensor. The D500 has the same pixel density as the D850. Cramming more pixels per unit area only leeds to more problems with noise and dynamic range.
Own the Z9 and D500 and I still use it occasionally and I’m hard pressed to tell much difference if any. They are holding their price still as are F mount lenses. In fact the Nikon 200-500 used seems to be going up in price. I paid £600 for mine about 4 months ago in excellent condition now they are going for over £850.
That's very interesting David - I'd quite like to get my hands on a Z9 or Z8 to put that to the test for myself! I do like the 200-500, but I tend to use a Sigma 150-600 to cover that kind of focal range. Sounds like you got a great deal for £600. Thanks for watching. 😊
Im keeping mine. It has the best multi frames function for me, perfect in sports photography. Just invest or rent a good telephoto lens or prime lenses, and the results are still remarkable
I bought the Nikon Z8 and after 2 weeks I started having problems with the view finder. I had it set for auto switching mode and when the screen turned off I turned it back on and I couldn’t see the back screen to review my pictures. I had to change the screen settings back every time. Now I’m getting the Nikon D500 to shoot with. I’m not spending a lot of money again on a camera.
Very interesting to hear - I wonder if you got unlucky, or if there is a wider issue with the switching. I've never had an issue with my Z7. I must say, I am tempted to get a Z8! Thanks for watching. 😊
Mirrorless wins for video. DSLR stills wins for photos. D500 is a beast. I have 3 bodies for youth sports. They are awesome with any of the pro Nikon glass.
Still using my D500 & can't see any reason to upgrade to mirrorless gear as I still have a few F mount lenses....I also kept my D7100 for backup... thanks for sharing your story.. cheers from Australia 🦘🦘😊
It is worth bearing in mind that you can use your F lenses with the adaptor should you move over to mirrorless. As they say though, if it's not broken, no need to fix it! Thanks for watching. 😊
Still use mine and mine was one of the first sold here. The reason? Nothing better at the file sizes and IQ. Mine used for sports and wildlife paired with the Nikin 300 f2.8. Bought a Nikon ZF on a lark to test mirrorless and I use it for my one lens travel 24-120 and the D500 comes too with the 300 attached. With the reach of a 450mm and the IQ achieved at a decent file size, I could not ask for more. Both cameras pair really well as I have no need for huge files or more than 11fps shooting. The ZF gives me better video with IBS and works and compliments the D500 as I can swap all lenses as needed. With 12-24, 70-200 and assorted old manual nikon and D-series lenses, I can happily use all on both cameras. Nice too is the newer C-batteries charge on the old charger and work in the D500 too. When shooting birds or sports with the D500 and 300 2.8 I get such great bokeh I have a hard time looking at Nikons new long lenses to use on FF. Happy with my kit as it produces great images. The DX to me was the low budget way to just say no to larger lenses and more expensive bodies. The D500 is still a keeper.
I haven't tried the 300mm 2.8, but I use the 300mm F4 PF and love it. Such a small and light lens and produces great results on the D500. Good point about file size too. Thanks for watching. 😊
Hi Robert, Good report. I bought the D500 when it came out. Happy? Yes. It met my requirements. Does it still meet my requirements? ... Yes. Therefore "Happy Factor" should remain. At some stage soon, will I add a Z8? Probably. (Z8ii) Does that automatically mean that "Unhappy" ticket has to be attached to the D500? For me, .. No. I still use my D200 bought back in 2005. Only 10mp. However, I reall like what the CCD produces. For some of my requirements, It's still very competent. I mainly used a 4 x 5" Linholf Karden Master and Blad ELM 500 in studio. What we now call Full Frame 35m was not capable in the Pro industrial field. However, the Nikon Ftn Photomic could handle tasks that the othera cameras just couldn't. I think the words "Happy with camera" has been hijacked by retailers and promters alike. Is it still fit for purpose? ..... With a Z8 or Z9 added, will my D200 still be fit for purbose? Yes. Will I use it often, probably not.
I have been researching an upgrade from my d3100 and was thinking of this d500. Everything points to how awesome it is but Nikon is not making it anymore😢. In fact they are moving away from DSLRs. Bummed here!
Great video thanks. I would like to know for sure if the D500 is compatible with Nikon's Creative Lighting System. I have been using it with an old D80 and it's great.
Depends on your budget, but if you can afford it, it will be a massive improvement on the D3400. Whether you need it will depend on the type of photography you do. The D500 excels at action and moving subjects, but if you're doing landscapes then a D3400 may be all you need. I'd recommend renting or borrowing one if possible, and see if you like it.
Hi Robert can you please advise me on the nikon D500 camera, I'm looking to purchase this camera to use with my sigma 150-600mm lens, I've found one on MPB where I've bought most of my gear, the only issue is the shutter count, its over 300k but the camera is cataloged as excellent condition, is it worth a punt, and if so would you recommend I have it serviced?, Waiting for your response 👍
It's difficult to say Steve. 300k+ is definitely high, but it does also depend on the condition of the camera and how well it has been looked after. I know people with shutter counts of over 200k and working fine, but I've never actually come across a D500 with a 300k+ shutter account. All I can say is that the build quality is excellent, so I guess that's in its favour. The price is also a big factor too - if it's the one that's about £600, I would say that's about okay, but personally I'd go for the "good" one that's slightly more expensive but has the shutter count around 144k. It just has a few aesthetic scuff marks by the looks of it. I think a service can only be a good thing, as long as it's by someone who knows what they're doing. I feel that may have confused more than helped, but I hope you get a good result with whatever you decide to go for. 😊
Morning Robert, firstly thank you for replying back so promptly, no you haven't confused the issue I think I would have been getting that camera for the wrong reasons, yes OK it's checked my MPB and there's a 6 month warranty but knowing my luck 6 months and a day and boom?. I think I'll keep looking, I just wanted a D500 to use with the sigma, my camera I use is the nikon Z50 which I've read is the modern version of the D500?, your thoughts on that?. Anyway, thanks again for your honest feedback,
Also try eBay - I've often had better results there for used equipment. I haven't used a Z50, but my understanding is that it's not equivalent to the D500. Some of its headline stats are better than the D500, and it will undoubtedly have a great sensor that produces excellent image quality. It isn't built for or aimed at the pro/prosumer market though, like the D500 is. What the compromises are, I'm unsure, but there will definitely be some. Maybe around the memory buffer and things like that.
I love my D500. It's one of the most reliable cameras that I have ever owned. For wildlife and sports photography, it still does a reasonable job, but it is showing its age. Most modern mirrorless cameras will have the advantage when it comes to auto focus, but if you are on a tight budget or just starting out in photography and are not sure if it's your thing, it's definitely worth a look at.
Yeah, it certainly is a tough reliable camera. I know people who have them with hundreds of thousands of actuations and still going strong. Thanks for watching. 😊
Still the best affordable action/sports camera. 10fps are plenty enough. Anything more than 15fps will just slow down your file sorting workflow. Except for the top of the range Z9/Z8, no other mirrorless built like a tank similar to D500
Yes, a few people have mentioned the file size and workflow point - and it's definitely something worth considering. I would love a Z8, but certainly happy with 10fps for now! 😊
Come on Robert it's a terrible camera and your z7 is getting long in the tooth now too, the best thing to do is to box them all up and send them to me, stick a few lenses in the box whilst your on 😄 Seriously though I'd be well happy to own a D500. Great video and a great camera.
Nonsense about "large prints"... I've printed 20x30" from a D500. Fantastic. Fact is, it's about the photographer. Not the camera. If you can't take great shots with a D500, try painting...
Yes, you absolutely can get decent large scale prints, even from a 12mp camera, but if you specifically want to make a lot of large prints, a camera with more mega pixels will be the better tool for you. It will produce more detail, particularly when looking closely at the prints, and also gives you more flexibility to be able to crop images and still make a good print.
It will still be a good camera in another 10 years. I'll never sell mine.
Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if I still have mine in 10 years too. I'll make a note to do a follow up video! 😁
Neither will I!!

Would you recommend it as an upgrade from a D3400 for a general hobbyists?
Depends on your budget, but if you can afford it, it will be a massive improvement on the D3400. Whether you need it will depend on the type of photography you do. The D500 excels at action and moving subjects, but if you're doing landscapes then a D3400 may be all you need. I'd recommend renting or borrowing one if possible, and see if you like it.
Hi Robert can you please advise me on the nikon D500 camera, I'm looking to purchase this camera to use with my sigma 150-600mm lens, I've found one on MPB where I've bought most of my gear, the only issue is the shutter count, its over 300k but the camera is cataloged as excellent condition, is it worth a punt, and if so would you recommend I have it serviced?,
Waiting for your response 👍
Bought mine new when it came out, still use it everyday while waiting for a true d500 replacement
That really highlights the build quality. I hope mine keeps going for so long too. Thanks for watching. 😊
short answer...yes. i still use one along with a z6ii
Well that's what I keep saying to Andrea - I really need to be upgrading to a Z8! Not sure she's falling for it though! 😂 Cheers for watching.
An Amazing Camera, I Love My D500, Exallent Paired With The Sigma 150-600mm. Many thanks for sharing.
Agreed. The Sigma is a heavy beast, but it is a great lens for the price. Thanks for watching. 😊
I would still be using mine if I didn't have a Z8.
I think that is the obvious replacement now. Quite a leap in price though! Thanks for watching. 😊
As good as it was in 2023.
Any body please gift me this beast 😢❤
Duh, why wouldn't it?
