    These reviews are really top-notch. I enjoy watching Chris on camera, very clear and easy to listen too. The video quality is great too. I have zero interest in video, but love listening to Jordan talk video features. Keep it up guys!

    Nov 2204 and the D500 is still superior in many ways over the mirrorless line-up. Auto focus speed, battery life, image quality and more. For sports, it is a BEAST! Nikon was smart to discontinue it as it posed too much of a threat to their mirrorless line-up.

    The shutter is not flappling, it normally caused by VR on tele lens snapping back after a picture is taken.

    Great video I always look forward to the reviews from TCS. If I may give feedback on one point. The price at $1999 is not expensive at all when compared to my older D300 purchased in 2007 for $1799. Also in order to get the D300 to shoot just 8 fps you had to buy a battery grip for $350 a battery from the D3 $150 and a special door $60. That's over $2300 9 years ago. Convert that to today's money and your closer to $3000. Every reviewer complains about the price? Honestly I think there are many D300 and D300s users that would consider the price a non issue. Availability now that's an issue. I was able to find a camera store where I live in Hawaii that had 1. So I purchased it. BTW that's actually 2 things that are now rare in Hawaii. A camera store and a D500

    Fantastic and thorough review. I absolutely LOVE my 300mm f/4 PF VR, I'm surprised it's not more popular. One of my favorite telephoto lenses; it's sharp and incredibly small and great for handling. This thing makes images just as sharp as the 300mm f/2.8 VRII, awesome little lens for outdoor sports and wildlife!

    I have had a Nikon D7100 for several years. I got it for one reason, the crop factor. I normally work in full frame, but it is nice to have the crop factor turn my 600mm f/4 ED IF AIS Nikkor into a 900mm f/4 ED IF AIS Nikkor. Although I have little gripes with the D7100, with the exception of its very small buffer capacity, I got a D500 about 4 months ago and I hate to say it, the D7100 is collecting dust in one of my 4 camera bags. The D500 gets almost as much use as my D850 now.

      Scott Murphy: Yes, I think the D500 is the best "semi-pro" camera available at the present time......its basically a mini-D5 without the price-tag of it's "Big Brother".

    Why do D750 and D500 cost the same? Here is why...I’m not choosing one camera over another but I would like to explain why you may want the D500 over the D750:
    1. The D500 is built little better. (More magnesium and weather sealing, [not positive about WS])-Very important to me. Built more like a pro camera.
    2. Some people say the ISO and dynamic rang are better on the D500. If not it is so close it’s not even worth comparing.
    3. D500 has much larger buffer
    4. D500 10 fps D750 6.5 fps
    5. D500 better auto focus system, same as D5 D500 = 25. 72, 153 D750 = 9, 21, 51
    6. D500 supports radio signal flash trigger system (another very big advantage)
    7.D500 has faster shutter speed *1/8000* v/s D750 *1/4000* (this is very big advantage also)
    8. D500 SD + XQD compatible
    9. D500 has pro button layout. Some people say “so what?” but I had the D300 and once you get used to it, it is really nice. Those people probably aren’t pros.
    10. D500 is only DSLR that shoots 4K
    11. D500 has higher resolution monitor - twice as good
    12. D500 More battery options EN-EL 18 or 15
    13. D500 has more movie playback options
    14. D500 viewfinder is 1.0x v/s D750 .7x
    15. D500 has touch screen
    16. 4mp difference is no difference
    17. Sigma makes 18-35 1.8, 50-100 1.8, to get full frame like bokeh on D500
    18. D500 has bluetooth *and* WiFi
    Feel free to add to this list, I can’t think of anything else. To me the D500 should probably cast more. Don’t tell Nikon though!

    • @iSOBigD
      @iSOBigD 8 років тому +2

      +Russell Stubbs Lots of good reasons to buy it if you were looking to upgrade now and they cost the same. However, in Canada the D500 is nearly 3k while I got a new D750 for $2000 months ago. Unfortunately they're not at all in the same price range, but another advantage for the D500 is most lenses cost a lot less than their FF equivalent.

      iSOBigD - Sorry to hear that. If the D500 where 3 grand I would buy the D750 too or if I had 3000 I would buy the D810.

    WOW. Finally, an ISO for ISO comparison between the D500 and D750. I shoot low light action mainly roller derby and I'm consistently hang around 4000-6400 ISO. The D500 is amazing and keeps increasing the distance between Nikon and Canon bodies. As a D750 owner I'm happy the FF edges out the D500 in low light image quality. Not to take anything away from the D500 because that means it's most likely better than D810, 5DM3 etc..... Talking low light here. As with one of your other comments previously... The new technology really opens the door for what we can expect for a D810 and D750 successor....
    Thank you TCS your reviews are awesome.

    Saw your little easter egg gem at 8:00min on the D500 about AF lens calibration using the AF & Live View Record button (in live mode) for fine-tuning different lens on this body. Great! Where and how did you discover this? Not in the manual? Thanks for this video!

    Great video, as usual. However, you said that, 17-55mm is "old". what do you mean by that, because being "old" does not necessarily mean that it is inferior to newer ones (especially when it comes to lenses).

      @paganphil100 3 роки тому +1

  • @stephenmcorby

    Love your reviews! However, as a D5 owner I can tell you that the AF Auto Fine Tune is wildly inconsistent and should really just be used as a general guide when you do more in depth calibration later. On a tripod, same target, broad daylight, I was getting ranges from -3 to +20. It was better with primes, but with zooms (even at the same focal length) it's practically useless.

  • @MicahGoldstein
    @MicahGoldstein 8 років тому

    The "mirror slap" isn't throwing your composition off on a lens that short. What you're actually seeing is the VR system jumping. Turn VR off and you won't see anything like that.
    EDIT: also, left out whether you can use the touchscreen for AF point selection (not in live view)

    Great review Chris. Thanks for the image samples too. The low light performance is really impressive as is the sharpness. Already have a 750 which I really like and a 7100 but will be purchasing another Nikon soon. Not sure if there is a new 810 update which will have similar performance with a larger FF sensor. Regardless, for 2 grand US, it's a hell of a camera and using FF lenses works just fine. I saw some images shot with a Nikon 20 1.8 and they were amazing. Thanks again for the review.

    Argh, trying to decide between the D500 and the D750. I don't really do much action photography but rather landscapes and portraits and other 'close' shooting, and I like the idea of being able to take better low-light shots, so I'm leaning toward the D750 with the FX sensor. But then again I might take more action shots with a camera that can do it so well, so maybe I should go for the D500 with the overall better specs. I'm thinking I"d be better off with the full-frame sensor but I wonder if I'm getting stuck on the 'full-frame' thing when the DX might be nearly just as good.

    Excellent review ! I have a D7000, and I don't know if I should upgrade to a D750 or a D500. Is the D750 a good camera for video too ? Besides the 4K argument, what would I be missing video-wise compared to the D500 ? This is a tough one for me !!

      No,
      There is no point here either.
      The camera is fast enough to handle those 20mp files.
      And the focus points are already spread out till the edges.
      The D7100/7200 had a crop mode to boost the framerate increase buffer and get better AF point coverage. While still having enough pixels to work with.
      The D500 doesn't need that compromise.

    Wow guys, another amazing well done camera review!!
    Jordan, what was the setup of the walk n' talk shot around 5:53? Aside from the lack of stabilization, the image still seemed to suffer from some of the breaking up in high-detail, moving camera shots that caused me to sell my D750. However, this camera's video in that area does look better, especially in light of the fact that it was shot in 4K I guess, where I would only attempt 1080 at 200Mbps in that environment with the GH4. The locked off shots in this video look super though!
    Another question, how is the AF in video, nonexistent?

    • @niccollsvideo
      @niccollsvideo 8 років тому

      As usual Nikon is delivering very sharp results in good light. The low light performance was a little disappointing however and the AF in video is still garbage.

    Always wanted a nikon D500 eversince I got into photography with my dad's D80 and a W100 (but i sold this since I couldn't tinker the way I wanted). I hadn't thought about cameras in quite some time cause I would have to save my allowance money for too long, which I would have probably started working at that point, so I just forgot about it at some point.
    Recently I got the opportunity to recieve a reward from my college (which was quite the surprise for me) and I've been looking into cameras again.
    First I took a look at Sony RX100 3 4, 5 or 5A, because I thought the portability would be much better for me. But one of the things I liked about taking photos was the bokeh, so I took a look at the Sony a6000 then Fuji XT30, XT3, then I suddenly remembered the D500, it's a little cheaper than the XT3 (which makes sense since it is older).
    So this would be the pinnacle of APS-C DSLR, buut, then I remembered I wanted to do Video aswell, so maybe if I got more money then I'd probably get this sometime else.

    Would you recommend the D500 body over the D7500? I have the D7500 body bought it sight unseen, but it doesn't feel the same as the D7200? Probably need to save up doe a D500 or a D750!

    I still wonder, which one will be better? Nikon d500 or nikon d7200+Sony a6300+zoom h5? As in our region, the combo costs same as one nikon d500. I wanna use it for landscape, concert, timelapse, documentary and occasionally birds and wildlife.

    This camera is mouth watering. I came to the Camera Store and played around just a bit with Nikon 200-500mm on it...the range, the sharpness, the autofocus, the overall design...I think Nikon truly nailed it this time. Nikon, please reward me for my kind words and send me one? Please? :)

    I loved touch screen on NX500 the most so far, soo useful. I miss it, it was like on beginning of 2014.
    I don't understand why most of dslrs still have such limited touch screens.. come oooon, we are in 2016!

    I was enjoying the video quality right from the start. I was surprised to learn it was recorded on a Nikon, but nice they finally made a camera, that you can do video on, even though you say you might not, coming from a video backgrund. Thanks for the review. I liked it - as usual. :-)

  • @DavidDatura
    @DavidDatura 8 років тому

    Great camera overall. The video quality as seen in this review is good enough rather than great though. But then if I went back to using this kind of camera (I'm on mirrorless now) video would not be a priority and only used occasionally. Anyway as usual with you guys the best camera reviews on UA-cam!

    which cameras would you use for fashion show runway shooting? let's find out with chris as zoolander in this snuggie fashion show...chris is using the blue steele look, as he wears an ocelot pattern snuggie.. which cameras would be best for this type of fast paced, low light shooting? d500 vs 7dii vs a6300 vs? addressing this industry would be very helpful for a lot of people, and especially if you make the video fun!

    So my Nikon D 7100 actually looks like it produces better images then my D750. Deeper color saturation and sharper images on the D7100. Under what conditions or situations will the D750 or an FX camera produce better images then a DX??

    • @iSOBigD
      @iSOBigD 8 років тому

      +Michael Czahur Under most conditions and under all high ISO conditions. The depth of field and field of view are different too, but that's more a matter of taste. It all depends what you're comparing. I have a D5100 which takes basically identical pictures to your D7100 and my D750 smokes it, especially if you edit photos. Bringing up any shadows will show much less noise at the same ISO settings on the D750 images.
      However, if you're comparing it for say, bird photography, the 50% zoom on the D7100 will get you closer and thus better quality pictures (more pixels in the head of a bird, for example, than if you were to use the D750 and crop). That being said, the focusing on the D750 is great, I've had no problems tracking and shooting cars going by, skateboarders and birds even with cheap lenses.

      +iSOBigD so I took out 750 and 7100 with the Nikon 24-84 set the lens at 35 MM for the 7100 and about 50 MM for the 750, and compared images. I was completely blown away when I compared side-by-side images how much better the D750 is. Color saturation, micro contrast, highlights and shadows all incredible on the D750. All images on the 750 were more balanced, more natural looking. The D750 is one amazing camera.

    • @iSOBigD
      @iSOBigD 8 років тому +1

      +Michael Czahur yup, I found it similar, but the biggest difference is at high ISO when I edit pics, I don't have to worry about noise removal as much and the quality difference is huge. Same goes for video, I couldn't shoot over iso 400 without the quality suffering a lot, but on the d750 I can record at over 1600 and have perfect quality. It's a few generations newer and full frame so it makes a big difference, especially when you push it during editing.

    Is it lack of CPU power, or sensors not made for it, that makes some manufacturers crop in for 4K video?

    • @theSUBVERSIVE
      @theSUBVERSIVE 8 років тому

      +Alexander Rex Evensen it's about choosing what to compromise. You either choose less crop or less rolling shutter. There are cameras out there doing full sensor readout of 28MP like the Samsung NX1, so CPU is not a problem but all photo cameras that record video, do so with rolling shutter, there is still no global shutter for still cameras, so a sensor readout of a cropped area will always be quicker than a full sensor readout, so less rolling shutter. Which is still better than moire and softness of line skipping.

    Got my D500 for a week and love it 100%. I've sold nearly all my Nikon FF glasses before and got two Sigma lenses 18-35 and 50-100 to pair with D500. I'm really impressed by these two lenses especially the 50-100. D500 users should consider to take a serious look at these two Sigma lenses.

Maybe others can reply and add comment on what they like to see in the follow-up? for me I would like to see 1) comparisons at ISO 12800 with D810 and D750,D7200,7DM2,A6300 2) 200-500, 300PF wildlife sport, 3) 50-100, Portrait 4) Lowlight Machine gun mode :-) 5) ISO100 vs D7200,D810,D5,D4S, 6)"SlapBitch" :-) 7) usage with 16-80 vs 18-140 8) others ?
