+LikePhoenixFromAshes Hmm, watch a few more reviews and you may get a shock as to how noisy the images are, even at ISO 3200, which Kai stated hardly needs a mention these days (images shot at ISO 3200). I think very noticeable grain is very worth a mention.
+cooloox a funny thing I notice when processing Nikon raw files in general, is that if the file is open with Adobe products, it gets extra noise. Also, photoshop CC seems to be noisier then Lightroom. If open in Nikon capture, it looks totally different. Annoys me a lot.
Kinda sick of the continual classification of FF as 'pro' and APS-C as consumer. Here's a beast that's clearly the right tool for this job over FF. Fun review Kai :) Brutal on the Pentax!
+AntPDC It is absolute nonsense to classify ff as pro, aps-c as otherwise. However, full frame sensors definitely capture less noise. Look at Jared Polin's real world tests, especially the portrait session with this camera and you'll be shocked at the high level of noise at even ISO 3200. As beautiful as this camera is - the IQ from it is being ridiculously overrated. It's extremely sharp (sharper than all of the other Nikons) but the noise is average as hell. It's definitely no low light beast!
I wouldn't call it excitement. Pentax products never review well by anybody who has or is a fan of either of the big 2, and what good is said about about them is laced with caveats lol. There is always hope though. At Least people are paying attention to them now.
I don't know how you can say Nikon didn't matter when they have been releasing the highest image quality DSLRs for many years now, the D810 is still heralded as the ultimate IQ DSLR because it has medium format quality at ISO 64.
+Luke Dumbass ! That was when medium format cameras were using CCD sensors. NOW (or two years ago), medium format cameras use CMOS sensors and are far and away superior to 35mm in IQ and dynamic range etc etc. You're livin in the past dude ! read a book !
+Travis Alex aslong as there is sports and wildlife photography, there will be the need of a faster focus system than a mirrorless can provide.. even if mirrorless match up with the speed, a dslr will always be faster and therefore they won't die. But for consumers who need a good image quality and doesnt need the fastest af system, it really doesnt matter which you take.. personal preferences
+Francisco Santos - determining if it matters is up to the end user. I've been using "pro SLR and DSLR" cameras since Nikon's film F4s. I also own a Fuji X100s and Xt1system. I have come to love the little Fujis, but only after I accepted the fact that I will miss 20% of the shots I would have like to have captured due to EVF lag and focus ability. If missing 20% doesn't matter to the user, then you are correct...it doesn't matter. And, I don't simply mean the images in which the focus is off, but all those images in which the moment was missed and a shot was never made.
+crxracer805 lol actually I do more video than stills so I moved to the BlackMagic, still the dark side though :) but if I would have to buy a dslr now I'd definitely go Nikon. Also I never understood that fanboy rivalry, they are both great tools. The canon just happened to be first with the full frame and movie function which got me to the canon side. If Nikon was the first in that area and so well endorsed as Canon 5Dmkii was, I'd be a Nikon user. I'm not at all brand steady :)
+Raymond Doetjes Indeed Canon is better than Nikon for video hands down. Nikon is superior over Canon for stills. However, Canon makes the finest glass in the world. I would move over to Canon just for that 70-200 f2.8 IS II. That lens is built like a tank and no Nikon lens comes close to it. However, Canon sensors fall short on dynamic range and that's my biggest hangup. We'll see what the 6D mark II has to offer.
crxracer805 Yesh I am very happy with the Canon glass too. I own a 6D and a 5D but I doubt I upgrade to MkII or MkIV of either of them. I am more likely to go the Sony route than -- which is ironic because I started film with Sony and moved to cheaper Canon :D
how does it focus with regular lenses compared to the 2-3k ones? All the shots looked like they were taken at f8 or more. With the dof being like 10 feet it's hard to not get something in focus. it would be nice to see it compared to similar crop cameras and the last generation too using the same lens
Excellent video presentation Kai, one of your very best. It was great to see you shooting some really fast action: I can't think of anyone else who has done so with this camera. I'm not a Nikon fanboy but I ordered a D500 two days ago - it will be the first time I've owned a Nikon camera. I had a Canon 7D mark 11 up until three months ago and it was brilliant, so I'm pleased that the D500 is rated even better. The bit about Pentax owners made me laugh.
+Tadas It's quite a bit more expensive than you would think, the base car can be cheap, but performance parts are expensive and these cars have loads of them.
Really hope Nikon does away with the crappy pop up flash on all non-entry level models going forward. It just feels brittle and having to clean dirt out of that area is a massive PITA. Good job Nikon, this is the first camera you've released since the D700 that hasn't been crippled in some way.
Great review ! Also whilst I've been invested in Full Frame for quite a while now; but even so the D500 looks like quite the stunning performer to me. Nikon's bringing back APS-C with a bang.
Don't want to say which is more superior nowadays, mirrorless or DSLR, but we have to thank Mirrorless camera manufacturers, like Sony, Olympus and Fujifilm etc to push Canon & Nikon to evolve quickly and produce more affordable and great performance DSLRs, otherwise, Canikon is still relaxing and not afraid of losing their market share by providing the "old-tech' cameras to the customers.
Hi Kai, please let us have a look at your Pelican case (review it?) and what you carry! I happen to have ordered the 1514 k 1519 last week in the same dessert tan too! Thanks.
Guys, if budget is your problem then just save up. You buy new gears for their function. I believe that D500 is a big jump from D7200, the control, tilted-and-touch screen, speed,.... I am sold at the moment I saw the buttons lit up though!
I lost my Nikon d3300 last month during my shoot. I guess this shall be the choice for my next camera... I shall be pleased if you do a little more detail on shooting videos on such crop sensor cameras as compared to other full frame cameras such as d750 of sort. Does it actually makes a difference or its just a crop factor that can be fairly adjusted by adjusted ourselves up? I shall be very thankful!
hmmmm I'm really torn between this and the A7s mkii - buying primarily for the 4K video and photography is a bonus. Love the build and brand reliability of the Nikon but the A7s strikes me as having a slight edge over the D500 where cropping is concerned - any other thoughts for a potential user of this type?
Thank you for the review. There was a massive price drop in Germany so I am considering buying this and switching systems buuut what about the lenses? QUESTION: Is there a well priced ! weathere sealed ! zoom lens ( over 200mm ) for this camera?
can somebody please explain to me how is he getting all the auto-focus points displayed in the viewfinder during the car shot at arnd 6:40? When I set my camera to af-c auto, I see only 1 focus point displayed. in af-s auto I see multiple points. help me pretty please
are 50mm lenses still recommended for aps-c sensors like these or is factoring in the crop on them mean you have to go for a lower mm lense? (talking about the nifty fifty idea for basic photography)
hello l,i have seen many of your reviews and i wanted to ask you what camera would you recommend for a fashion photographer?canon 6d//nikon d750/ or sony a7 mark ii?i am open to more suggestions!and thank you
Hi, I'm deciding between a D500 and D810. The use will be for product shots on a studio. I'm a watch and jewelry photographer. Which one would you recommend for that purpose? Thanks
+ThatPyotr Kai talks for awhile about the Body Controls without a lens attached. Nevertheless, I recommend watching the entire video. I wonder where this race track is located?
Now the question is, is the D500 the end of the line for this series? They have no where else to go (literally since D600 is full frame). Regardless, this camera should be relevant for at least the next 7 years.
Why do reviewers try to BS us all the time? The D500 has VERY NOTICEABLE noise from as low as ISO 3200. Kai, unlike your tiny sample images which hide everything, Jared Polin did a live photoshoot and made the RAW images available for download. I was shocked how bad the noise was starting from ISO 3200. This is clearly a very fast, very sharp, beautifully featured and very well put together camera, but please tell the whole story and show us images at 100% so we can see how average the images are in reality. Nikon has not really made advances in noise reduction and Tony Northrup's video shows that even though it's sharper than a 7Dii, it has pretty well equal noise! The 7Dii is hardly latest cutting edge technology; it's an old camera now.
I'm so torn. I'm an amateur at best trying to get into the 4k video world. Problem is I have a modest budget trying to have my cake and eat it too. I want great still pictures and great 4k video. This D500 would be great to capture my kids during sports but average when it comes to shadowing a pro photographer at a wedding. The photographer suggested I invest in a Panasonic Gh4 with kit lens which I hear is great for 4k video but I'm concerned about the small micro four thirds sensor for stills. The camera I'm replacing is a Nikon D7000 so I have a hand full of Nikon glass in both FX and DX format. I'm familiar with the metabones adapters for the GH4 which have auto focusing limitations. Any advice from more experienced photographers would be appreciated. My budget is around 2k Thanks
you have obviously used a lot of different cameras what would be a good choice for shooting things like racing, skateboarding and is also good for landscape photos and some video? Mainly will be taking landscape photos then I'd say skating and racing would be next then some video of the last two.
I need help. i sold my old full frame camera, and im choosing between the d500 and d750. I mostly like the d500 overall, but im just worried that the low light difference is greater with the d750, because i shoot low light too. And im afraid to commit with crop again because i already own a full frame already. Is it ok to go down again with crop if you're also considering these two?
I'm looking to get a new camera. preferably full frame. I currently use a Canon 1200D as its been a heck of a long time since i played around with photography, and not to mention it was cheap. I would love to get the new Nikon D500 but it would cost me a small fortune to replace all of my lenses so the only option i have left is to wait until Canon release a new 6D or 5D.
I just [urchased a D500. I had a shoot the very next day so, I did take the D500 but just as a backup camera (THANK GOD FOR THAT). I had the strangest experience, I put an SB 700 on the D500 and put it on AUTO TTL, guess what, the flash wouldn't fire! Yesterday for my next shoot, I faced the same issue. So, I made a small change in the Flash. I put the flash on MASTER, and it started working fine. Is this how it's supposed to happen or is it a glitch only with my camera? Please advise. The second issue, I set the camera to use the SD card as a "Back up RAW" (as using that in my laptop is easier, but when I inserted the SD in my laptop, there were no pictures in there. Its not backing up. Glitch? Or should I take it for repairs?
I owned a Nikon f65 film camera then onto a Nikon D300 as my first serious camera. then onto a d7100 which I wasn't happy with. sold that, and I'm on the lookout for something new. this is it. I took some unbelievable low light street photography images with the d300. with the added battery grip it just fit so well. this d500 is something we needed long ago. I honestly don't think Nikon do video too well. the d7100 was terrible in low light, not smooth and I never had the confidence in it. maybe this is better, but for still shots and it's ergonomic design...you couldn't go wrong.
I use Canon and recognize Nikon's bodies are superior in every aspect. But the Canon lenses are just that good! Plus the little things regarding the usage of Canon bodies... Can't ditch them as far as I'm concerned. But man, Nikon's bodies are fine engineering marvels.
Seems like a great cam. If I had money.. I've been watching a lot of the older vids of you guys and I'm wondering why Kai changes his hair so often? Also is Alamby single?
Hi! Love ur vids man. I am looking to purchase my second cam and wanted a great one this time around.I'm looking for a camera that has 30mp or more, HD video recording with slow motion capture along with a minimum of 20mins recording time per session. 10 or more FPS. Dual high capacity transfer rated memory card slots. A high buffer capacity to assist with FPS and a swivel / tilt LCD touchscreen. Any ideas?
some say it has a 20.9MP sensor, others say it shoots 4k Video, all we know is, it's the d500
I see what you did there...
+Oberone Kenobi I just read that in a very specific voice.
+Tristan Jones (Photographer) LOL captain slowly 😂
In this episode Kai proves he's still relevant.. and so does Nikon
A Nikon strap on a Nikon camera? How... how could you Kai?!
Because he's a self acknowledged Nikon fanboy
That's a 1st. DRTV have never done this before
+Timothy Tasmin Its cause this camera DESERVES IT.
+LikePhoenixFromAshes Hmm, watch a few more reviews and you may get a shock as to how noisy the images are, even at ISO 3200, which Kai stated hardly needs a mention these days (images shot at ISO 3200). I think very noticeable grain is very worth a mention.

Fun review Kai :)
Brutal on the Pentax!
Agreed
I agree!
+Fleur Jackson It's all bollocks, intended to make men (and it's only men) feel perpetually insecure about their parts ;)
totally agree...there are actually many pro surfing photographers that shoot 7d mark II so why wouldn't these cameras be considered pro?
+AntPDC It is absolute nonsense to classify ff as pro, aps-c as otherwise. However, full frame sensors definitely capture less noise. Look at Jared Polin's real world tests, especially the portrait session with this camera and you'll be shocked at the high level of noise at even ISO 3200. It's definitely no low light beast!
Im a simple man, I see Kai, I like.
No, you are just GAY
+wxn007 they should bring back alamby too..
+Arturo Aguirre I hate people like you who just ruin comment sections
Tom C - Tech 👍
drifting + dslr + digital Rev = pure awesomeness × 10,000 unicorn boost
Mcm fan ;)!
+Trystan Lee So glad Wasaabi won
+Meteor Shower I can't even imagine that white turd getting the win. Saab was way too epic.
+cirvis240 Yeah, there was lots of effort out into both but the Saab sounded and looked the best, let alone win the drag
+cirvis240 2sexi was an absolute machine!!!!
Just kidding it looked like shit.
BUTTONS LIGHT UP.......... ok you got me.
+TehObLiVioUs
I wonder if they do on the D5
+gewglesux They do.
+gewglesux they did !
+Tony Luangrath
Thanks for the replies.... I should have guessed....
CaNikon not following along with the modern times. Don't they know buttons must feature rgb-lighting these days?...
This is the kind of content we love from you DRTV!!!
Was it just me who got all excited seeing the K-1 is almost ready for a review?
+Sukhy Mann
You like me are apparently sitting in a corner in the dark.
I wouldn't call it excitement. Pentax products never review well by anybody who has or is a fan of either of the big 2, and what good is said about about them is laced with caveats lol. There is always hope though. At Least people are paying attention to them now.
+Sukhy Mann No, I shoot Nikon and for me, the Pentax K-1 is the best deal in photography, bar none.
Markus Arike
I realized this same thought years ago with the K-5, excellent deal, excellent imaging machine.
Steven Johnson I agree completely. The K-5 is easily one of the very best APS-C DSLRs ever created. Small size, great build quality and awesome IQ.
Kai likes the D500 so much, he forgot to swear.
Happy now Greg?
remember when people said that drtv is top gear but for cameras?
I feel every reviewer out there is avoiding the most important question about the D500:
Will it blend?
I don't know how you can say Nikon didn't matter when they have been releasing the highest image quality DSLRs for many years now, the D810 is still heralded as the ultimate IQ DSLR because it has medium format quality at ISO 64.
Thanks for pointing that out!!! Good reminder!!!
+Luke
Dumbass !
That was when medium format cameras were using CCD sensors. NOW (or two years ago), medium format cameras use CMOS sensors and are far and away superior to 35mm in IQ and dynamic range etc etc.
You're livin in the past dude ! read a book !
Steven Johnson www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikon-d810/14 here is comparisons vs. the Pentax 645Z. Have fun, dumbass.
Hahahhahahaa so funny!!
***** Indeed
I shoot Canon, but love this video because clearly demonstrates why DSLRs are NOT DEAD Zack Arias.
anyone who says they are dead is ignorant.
and I shoot mirrorless too.
+Travis Alex aslong as there is sports and wildlife photography, there will be the need of a faster focus system than a mirrorless can provide.. even if mirrorless match up with the speed, a dslr will always be faster and therefore they won't die.

Best video review DRTV has done in a long time.
I'm a Canon shooter but I would love to own this camera. It really is INSANE!
Then come over to the Nikon side ;)
+crxracer805 lol actually I do more video than stills so I moved to the BlackMagic, still the dark side though :) but if I would have to buy a dslr now I'd definitely go Nikon.
Also I never understood that fanboy rivalry, they are both great tools. The canon just happened to be first with the full frame and movie function which got me to the canon side. If Nikon was the first in that area and so well endorsed as Canon 5Dmkii was, I'd be a Nikon user.

+crxracer805 actaully nikon makes better glass & have never changed lens format. also NASA uses nikon
Welcome back Kai! This restores my faith in DRTV!! Keep it up!!!
how does it focus with regular lenses compared to the 2-3k ones? All the shots looked like they were taken at f8 or more. With the dof being like 10 feet it's hard to not get something in focus. it would be nice to see it compared to similar crop cameras and the last generation too using the same lens

Two of my favorite things, digitalrev videos and drifting!
damn kai, put on some GODDAMN moisturizer
Can't help the genes
when you realize that you can actually build a decent drift car for that kind of money..
+Tadas It's quite a bit more expensive than you would think, the base car can be cheap, but performance parts are expensive and these cars have loads of them.
+BigJoe_Buster always that one guy
+BigJoe_Buster more like big joke buster hahah
This camera is hot, I want it.
me too but $3k...
+Lucas Magno $1,599 without kit lens ! :)
+Tony Luangrath youre both wrong, its $2000 US
2350€ (~$2635) in Finland :/
+Tony Luangrath I thing that is an old model but if not wow that is an expensive kit lens
Should i get this or wait for the D7300/7500?
Really hope Nikon does away with the crappy pop up flash on all non-entry level models going forward. It just feels brittle and having to clean dirt out of that area is a massive PITA.
Good job Nikon, this is the first camera you've released since the D700 that hasn't been crippled in some way.
Great review ! Also whilst I've been invested in Full Frame for quite a while now; but even so the D500 looks like quite the stunning performer to me. Nikon's bringing back APS-C with a bang.
I just decided this channel is the top gear of cameras
Don't want to say which is more superior nowadays, mirrorless or DSLR, but we have to thank Mirrorless camera manufacturers, like Sony, Olympus and Fujifilm etc to push Canon & Nikon to evolve quickly and produce more affordable and great performance DSLRs, otherwise, Canikon is still relaxing and not afraid of losing their market share by providing the "old-tech' cameras to the customers.
HA! affordable
Here for the MkII Escort thumbnail
Hi Kai, please let us have a look at your Pelican case (review it?) and what you carry! I happen to have ordered the 1514 k 1519 last week in the same dessert tan too! Thanks.
Is it a worthy upgrade from the D7200? Does it have better overall image quality?
Not really, unless you really need that 14 fps shooting capability
Guys, if budget is your problem then just save up. You buy new gears for their function. I believe that D500 is a big jump from D7200, the control, tilted-and-touch screen, speed,.... I am sold at the moment I saw the buttons lit up though!
I lost my Nikon d3300 last month during my shoot. I guess this shall be the choice for my next camera... Finally an episode with more information and less jokes. :)
Kai is back, yeah and by the way with a nice video too.
Hi, look at title in time 8:33... is it really 4k video / 50p ??? :) i think it is 30p only.
What brand are Kai's glasses? I've never been able to figure it out.
Kai!! So badass with that new Nikon D500!! Make all canon shooters looked feel so jeopardized.
hmmmm I'm really torn between this and the A7s mkii - buying primarily for the 4K video and photography is a bonus.
Love the editing in this video
So, is D7200 is still a good camera?
Oh nice, I love Top Gear.
For real though, Kai really reminds me of Jeremy sometimes.
Aww.. that jab at Pentax is too soon for me. I just got back from Photocon LA and the Pentax booth was oh so lonely...
can somebody please explain to me how is he getting all the auto-focus points displayed in the viewfinder during the car shot at arnd 6:40? When I set my camera to af-c auto, I see only 1 focus point displayed. in af-s auto I see multiple points. help me pretty please
He is using AF-A and full auto focus points.
Sweet, kai is back!!
best review of a nikon d500 on youtube
Finally! A awesome review by Kai!!
hi, what about another video about the canon 700D pls ? maybe canon 700D vs nikon d3300 !
are 50mm lenses still recommended for aps-c sensors like these or is factoring in the crop on them mean you have to go for a lower mm lense? (talking about the nifty fifty idea for basic photography)
was that the NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6 during the drift shooting?
hello l,i have seen many of your reviews and i wanted to ask you
what camera would you recommend for a fashion photographer?canon 6d//nikon d750/ or sony a7 mark ii?i am open to more suggestions!and thank you
Hi, I'm deciding between a D500 and D810. The use will be for product shots on a studio. I'm a watch and jewelry photographer. Which one would you recommend for that purpose? Thanks
Whats better buying an old pro camera or a new beginners camera?
90% of the video is going to be sounds of motors so be warned
+ThatPyotr Kai talks for awhile about the Body Controls without a lens attached. Nevertheless, I recommend watching the entire video. I wonder where this race track is located?
+ThatPyotr so 90% of the video is fantastic? :D
Nikon is better than Canon!
that's a bold statement
Digital Rev and drifting. This makes me very very happy!
Now the question is, is the D500 the end of the line for this series? They have no where else to go (literally since D600 is full frame). Regardless, this camera should be relevant for at least the next 7 years.
Nah. Second to last. There's still the D500s.
Or the D550 even.
D510 will be launched in 6 months
D510 in 2020
Dear DigitalRev, please make a video Canon 7D mark II vs Nikon D500
Well said!
Another excellent review: Is DigitalRev Back ?
Why do reviewers try to BS us all the time? The D500 has VERY NOTICEABLE noise from as low as ISO 3200. Still worth it in 2021?
I am thinking of a replacement for my D300s, so, would prefer this D500 or D750 given that price is similar.
Great review! Interesting to see Nikon and Pentax getting a lot of kudos for their latest releases. Just goes to show that DSLR is far from dead.
Good that Nikon got inspired by Pentax high-end ergonomics about the ISO button, it is a really useful feature.
I'm so torn. I'm an amateur at best trying to get into the 4k video world. Problem is I have a modest budget trying to have my cake and eat it too. I want great still pictures and great 4k video. Would like to have known what the lens was.
Kai looked way too excited to demo the Nikon camera ;)
4:00 you shoot with full auto ? raw or jpeg ? why facebook don't like raw photos ??
Raw is not a photo format!
It carries the information of your photo but you have to convert it to JPEG to make it an image.
What lense did he use?
Nice technique with the 70-200, I am going to try that zoom with thumb!! I am so torn get the D500 or the Phantom 4. Thanks for the reviews
I am glad this guy is back to doing reviews... but don't waste your time reviewing nikons
is there a camera with all the attributes of the Nikon D500 but which is full frame too?
you have obviously used a lot of different cameras what would be a good choice for shooting things like racing, skateboarding and is also good for landscape photos and some video? Mainly will be taking landscape photos then I'd say skating and racing would be next then some video of the last two.

kai is back
get in there
What lense did you have when shooting the cars?
Finally Kai is making a video
Thanks for your D500 review and various shooting tips in your others videos
Looks like you were shooting at Kings Lynn speedway ? my old home town
seems like we might be seeing a 7dmk3 earlier than planned. definitely looks like an awesome machine!
I'd wait for 6D II
all my favorites in one video, turboed 240 and cameras😍😍
Finally Kai is back
Welcome back Kai :D
Can you compare the D500 vs the Sony A6300 for sports/wildlife? The Sony seems to have many of the same features for a lower price.
You have no way to stick the A6300 in the @ss of your fast @ss 400mm, 500mm lens. Only Nikon system allow you to does that.
So i take it its pretty good at low light/night moments right?
But man, Nikon's bodies are fine engineering marvels.
first decent review I've seen from DigitalRev in a long time!
keep up the good work and i'll might subscribe again
How does the D500 perform with landscapes?
Seems like a great cam. If I had money.. I've been watching a lot of the older vids of you guys and I'm wondering why Kai changes his hair so often?
Also is Alamby single?
Doesn't the F stop on a FX lens get worse when you put it on a DX body such as this camera?
Mark Batarina I think you're confused about about what an F stop is.
what lens is he using with the camera?
You should've used a better mix setup.
I could hear what you were saying when the cars were at their loudest, but only barely.
Any ideas?
What ISO for the shoot ? Sorry missed it in stills.
Nikon D500 = New Love!!
It is my go to camera for action and extended reach with my FX lenses
