I know my overall thoughts on this movie won’t be popular, but I’ll only ever be honest in my opinions on the content I watch on this channel. It would be unrealistic to love every movie or show I come across. All that aside, I hope you enjoy the reaction and thank you so much for checking it out 🤍
Me and my mom watch this almost every Christmas. ------ I just roll with the movie ridiculousness. Which makes it even better.
You don't have to enjoy or like all the movies suggested. It's part of being a reactor. Giving your personal reaction. Over time, your viewers will learn to anticipate what you prefer and don't and request movies they think you'll enjoy. Sometimes they'll be duds, but not all movies are going to hit everyone the same. Stay real and true.
Hey Steph, I don't think this was a dud for you. I think you liked parts of the movie, your facial reaction indicated as much. Other parts you could leave. ------- This is not the greatest movie ever but it's a fun ride. So i hope your enjoyed the ride. That was, " Trading Places"

"Here's Johnny", both here, and in the Shining, was a reference to the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. It was the most popular late night show for decades. The show would open with his sidekick, Ed McMahon, saying "Heeeeres Johnny!".
And it's a double entendre because a prostitute's customers are known as 'Johns'.
There is a connection with this movie and Coming To America... in case you didn't see Coming To America, I'll leave it at that. 😊 ❤
It's also a fun flick in which to see Samuel L. Jackson, in a tiny part.😃

I already pointed out that the phrase "Here's Johnny" was made famous from the nightly introduction of Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show.
However, in the context of this part of this movie, there is also probably a reason the guy says that. In the United States, a male client of a female prostitute is called a John. So his legal name in the movie is probably not Johnny: instead, he is referring to himself as a John (client of a prostitute) but doing so in a humorous way by saying, "Here's Johnny".

20:48 "Here's Johnny!" comes from the opening of the Tonight Show back when Johnny Carson was the host ... which he was for a long time (I think the next host was Jay Leno, and then Jay retired and someone else took over as host). The announcer was Ed McMahan, and every night Carson would be behind curtains and then Ed would introduce him as "Here's Johnny", and then Carson would walk out.

The last scene had the Duke's buying at any price because they had a fake crop report that showed the orange crop was really bad (It actually wasn't) so when the Duke's trader kept buying at the open the price went up and all the rest of the trader's jumped onboard because they knew the Duke's knew something. Once it got high enough Winthorpe and Valentine started shorting (which means they started selling borrowed shares that required them to buy it back at a later price hopefully lower which they would make money on since they sold borrowed shares high and bought them back lower) Once the real crop report came out and showed the orange crop was not affected the price sank like a rock leaving the dukes in a very bad position and Winthorpe and Valentine very rich when they sold short at 142 and bought them back at 29. Remember since they shorted the price going down is very good and they cleaned up

It makes me feel so old to explain this. (Here's Johnny) used to be the intro to The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. And considering about 35 million people used to watch The Tonight Show a week, it was pretty famous

Zip Ziploc bags, although available at that time, weren't exactly commonplace. They were still being advertised as a new product for consumers in the 80s.

John Landis also directed An American Werewolf in London, The Blues Brothers, Innocent Blood, National Lampoon's Animal House, and Spies Like Us.

@@cinemawithsteph John Landis did a movie version of the Twilight Zone. He took old story lines and vamped them up to the current ones. Sad note however, a known actor and 2 children were actually killed on the set by a helicopter. Horrific situation
And his best was the Zucker Abrahams Zucker first movie The Kentucky Fried Movie and that movie’s success and his relationship with them lead to Airplane.
It's one of those movies I grew up with, and though I don't think it's perfect, the thing I really love is the performances. There's a complicated story behind the movie, but basically the studio didn't want most of the cast. Eddie Murphy hadn't headlined a movie before, Dan Aykroyd hadn't been in anything successful without John Belushi, Jamie Lee Curtis was a horror movie scream queen who'd never done comedy... Don Ameche hadn't appeared in a movie for 40 years and most of Hollywood thought he was dead. Everyone had something to prove, and I think that energy comes through.
PCP is a horse tranquilizer. In the 1970s and 1980s it was called Angel Dust because it has hallucinogenic properties and people thought that they could fly after they took it. It had a very high mortality rate because people would jump off of Roofs out of Windows and Bridges.
Also was used in the 60s.
Some dude in the 80’s cut pieces of his face off and fed it to his dog. There’s also a horrible video of steve-o on pcp.
John Landis directed Michael Jackson's THRILLER video, and his BLACK OR WHITE video, and other than TRADING PLACES, he also directed COMING TO AMERICA and BEVERLY HILLS COP 3. So John Landis has worked with both Michael Jackson and Eddie Murphy several times.
Pork Bellies isn't stocks. It's the futures market. Basically trying to predict the cost of an item in the future. Stocks is about current value (based on speculation). Futures is about future value (based on speculation).

What even makes the Dukes more evil is the fact Penelope is their Grand Niece.

2. Beeks/Paul Gleason also played Richard Vernon in "The Breakfast Club" and the idiot police captain in "Die Hard". 😇
3. Landis didn't want Jamie Lee Curtis because she had always been a "scream queen" and he didn't know if she had the chops for comedy.
4. When everyone pauses in the restaurant it's a play on the old "EF Hutton" commercial. "When EF Hutton speaks everybody listens".
5. One of the most VHS pauses in history. Jamie Lee Curtis.😍🥰😋
6. GOOF: Where did Louis get the gun AND all those drugs for only $50?🤑Even in 1983.
7. Don Ameche's strong religious convictions made him uncomfortable with swearing. This proved to be a problem for the scene at the end of the movie, where he had to shout out "Fuck him!" to a group of Wall Street executives. When he did act out the scene, it had to be done in one take, because Ameche refused to do a second one. He also had an issue with the N word.
8. There's an Easter egg in "Coming to America" with the Duke brothers. Eddie Murphy at his best.
Hey Steph, the losses the Duke's suffer can really happen. ----- Which is why folks jumped out the 50 th story window at the start of the depression. ----- Or ended it all in 2008.
The officer that inventories Winthorp’s belongs is Frank Oz, the voice actor for many Muppet characters like Fozzy Bear, Miss Piggy, Sam the Eagle, and Animal.
He also played Yoda in Star Wars.😊

Learned something watching this. Kept in enough footage of the scene with the gorilla guy instructing the 2 baggage handlers for me to realize that the gorilla guy is the actor who played the flighty guy in the police station with all the great jokes in Airplane!
In the Airport/Control Tower you mean. Johnny. Aka Stephen Stucker from the Kentucky Fried Theater company run by the Airplane writer/directors. John Landis directed their first movie before Airplane, The Kentucky Fried Movie.
This movie is based on a Three Stooges short called "Half Wits Holiday".
The whole movie was filmed in and around Philadelphia. Back then it was rare for cars to have built in TV's in them.
The 'Here's Johnny' is a double entendre. It references the popular night time talk show Johnny Carson. Ed McMahon would open with Johnny's introductions with 'Heeeeeeeere's Johnny!!!!' but also a prostitute's customers are known in slang as 'Johns'.
The Duke Brothers were based on the Hunt Brothers (Nelson Bunker Hunt; William Herbert Hunt and Lamar Hunt) who tried to corner the silver market in 1980. They lost over a billion dollars after the incident but their family fortunes survived. However the value of their assets (mainly holdings in oil, sugar and real estate) declined steadily during the 1980's and their estimated net worth dropped from 5 billion dollars to less than a billion dollars in 1988. In 1988 they were found responsible for civil charges for trying to corner the market in silver. They were order to pay 134 million dollars to a Peruvian mineral company that lost money because of them and were forced to declare bankruptcy.
The baggage handlers were played by Al Franken and Tom Davis, who had many skits as Franken and Davis on the original Saturday Night Live.
Don Ameche and Ralph Bellamy (Duke and Duke) were well known actors from Hollywood's golden era. Ameche was known as one of the last real gentlemen of old Hollywood. He hated using the N word and repeatedly apologized to Eddie Murphy, who had to reassure him that it was ok. Bellamy died in 1991, and Ameche in 1993. You can see Ameche in Cocoon (1985), directed by Ron Howard.
You would've had to have watched the full movie more than once to really understand the story. Also the Duke Brothers make a cameo in Eddie Murphy's 1988 movie COMING TO AMERICA. They appear as two broke homeless men.
A breakdown of the trading scene at the end: The Dukes were given false information abou the orange harvest, claiming there would be a shortage of oranges, making the value very high. In reality, "the cold winter had not affected the harvest", thus a surplus of oranges was going to be offered. The Dukes wanted to claim as many orange shares as possible regardless of the cost, since they figured, they would make money anyway. In reality they ended up buying a ton of shares for high price of oranges that were actually really cheap. They lost a lot of money. Valentine and Winthorpe sold "futures" of oranges with high price and when the price was actually low (dirt cheap), they bought enough shares to satisfy their futures. This difference made them a huge profit. Dukes got bankrupted and the duo got rich.

Great reaction i love this classical comedy you should react to "Coming to America" Eddie Murphy is hilarious on that movie, a fun-fact about this movie the cop in booking that finds the PCP on Louis was Frank Oz, the famous puppeteer and voice for Yoda and many other Muppets and characters like Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Animal, Grover and Cookie Monster. He plays a similar role in Blues Brothers. Keep up the good work.
9:03 - "Jive turkey" is a mild insult popular in black English in the 1970s. It could be used to call someone a liar, an idiot, a blowhard, or just about anything else.

The baggage handlers were the comedy team from '70s Saturday Night Live: Al Franken (the shorter, drunker one) and the late Tom Davis. Franken later became Senator from Minnesota.
The loading instructor was played by Stephen Stucker, who played Johnny, the crazy Air Traffic Control worker in Airplane! and Airplane 2: The Sequel.

The actor who played the Duke who says the 'N' word was a truly decent man. When he performed that scene he apologised for the language and insisted that there would only be one take!
You should watch/react to Eddie Murphy's "Coming to America", there is a connection to this movie that you won't get until about 3/4 of the way through but it is funny when you see it.
Winthorpe eating on that bud out of his Santa outfit is the funniest thing thing ever. Every time I see that I crack up. Great reaction. 👏👏😊🥰

I know he was only pretending but you didn't know that and you saw a man pulling himself along the ground begging for food apparently with no legs but you thought the woman who's dress was tugged for two seconds was the one that was hard done by in the scene, THAT was the first thing you observed as significant in that scene: people, men and women, found that very funny when it first came out because people still had a fraction of a sense of perspective back then.
She unfortunately did a lot of virtue signaling
You might like an old comedy starring Jimmy Stewart (George Baily in "It's a Wonderful Life"). The movie is called "Harvey".

The rich person and poor person "trading places" has been a literary and cinematic trope (device ) since Mark Twain wrote the Prince and the Pauper in 1881...in that book the two boys were lookalikes possibly twins if I recall....the 40's black and white film might be good to research this point.
Your opinion of this film is valid as is everyone's opinion...after all it is 40 years old and one Hope's society has made strides.
Movie reactions is how I can gauge the younger generations mindset.

It just came to mind...the man in the iron mask with Leonardo DiCaprio used the same trope...twins one rich one poor more recent film might be more to your liking...an action swashbuckler...( lots of sword fighting )...old timey light saber dueling... lol
Never saw this channel...hostess is gorgeous.
This film is a classic, but its very much a product of its time, with many jokes that just don't land anymore and others that are better off left in the 80s.
It also doesnt do a good job of explaining its conclusion, generally requiring youtube commentors to explain knowlege that the film presumes.
Too bad you didn't like it, it's a great comedy and one of Eddie Murphy's best movies.

This movie is to me one of the greatest comedy films ever made. I am huge fan of both Dan Aykroyd and Eddie Murphy. For them to be in a movie together is Hollywood gold.
Right, I love when big stars are in movies together though it doesn’t always work out, unfortunately… I mean it works out but it’s not always a pleasant experience for them

@@nsasupporter7557 You're right on the money about that. I've heard people say life is strange. People in my opinion are way stranger. None of us are black or white. We are various shades of gray some lighter than others and some darker than others. There are also way more than fifty shades of gray when it comes to all the different personalities.

Yeah, I agree with you. I've never liked this movie, and I grew up in the 80s. I just don't think it's good at all, and I always cringe when commenters recommend it. I think there's much better movies out there.

So confused, this is a comedy movie, Dan Aykroyd and Eddie together, laughing for hours, you got it, giggled when supposed to, smiled happy for end, then fast after saying not for you...?? In any movie or series or books, you either care about the ones in it or don't. Interested in what is next, or don't care. 100% of your reaction said you enjoyed watching... doesn't mean have to watch again, but saying not for you means didn't like this or that, but even saying it after, your smile and eyes didn't match...
I thought it was funny but didn’t feel as emotionally invested as I have with other movies, comedy or not.
When he kissed her, your emotionally was up, when the two saw 29 and yelled hugging, you smiled...what does a story do to smile, laugh, and then say not for you?
There are movies that someone dies at end, but minutes later the end gets better...soke might stop liking it because death, but what reason on this?
I respect all thoughts, but everytime I watch, the $5 buck to worker, his response, then angry paying the lowest to workers, his face...like F Him at end...have to watch whole movie to realize how funny that is!@@cinemawithsteph

John Landis directed National Lampoon's Animal House and The Blues Brothers, both of which I highly recommend.
I haven’t seen either, but they are on my list!
100% guarantee she won’t like either. Animal House is downright awful to today’s generations. Landis was just a kid when he came up with that movie.
Your reaction was great, refreshingly genuine and I agree this isn't the best movie. It is dated and it reflects the time inwhich it was made. In the middle of the '80's and Reaganomics. And I feel the themes explored resonate even to today. How people are so easily manipulated and taken advantaged of by the rich and powerful. I think that's why it's still popular, it's refreshing to see the rich d-bags get their comeuppance. Incidentally there is a tiny connection to "Coming to America" and an even tinier connection in "Scream".
