- Marc and I watched Trading Places for the first time and thought it was a hilarious take on the question of "What if.." Eddie Murphy and Dan Akroyd are at their comedic best, and Jamie Lee Curtis was so great as Ophelia. This movie was the perfect way to kick off the countdown to Christmas, and we hope that you enjoy our reaction!

Don Ameche was an absolute gentleman in real life and refused to say the "n" word. The director and Eddie Murphy convinced him it was important as it showed without any doubt what the character was. He finally agreed to do it, but told the director to be sure he had everything ready to get it on the first take, because he was not going to do it twice. It bothered him that much.
There seems to be some confusion around this since many accounts say it was the "f--- him!" that bothered Ameche, and which he would only say once. I've never heard it said about the one you referenced.
Of all the great films I'm sure he has on his resume after a lifetime in show biz, funny enough it's his role in the movie Folks with Tom Selleck that I know him best from. That was one of those movies that I just though was so funny when I was a kid, and I watched it over and over.
Whether it was in reference to the n word for the f him, either way sounds like he was a gentleman :)

Yes, it was the F-word that he said they needed to get first take. Don Ameche was strongly averse to any bad language, so with both of those scenes he was said to be very apologetic to the other actors and whole crew for him having to say it. He was very old classic Hollywood, and also religious. Jamie Lee Curtis was the one who shared about how he was like that on set.
@@DavidvsFilm There's an oral history of this movie that's a really good read. One of the things they talk about is how when they were looking to cast the Dukes, John Landis wanted an old school Hollywood actor who hadn't really ever played a villain role, and he said, "Kind of like a Don Ameche-type" or something along those lines. But, he had thought Don Ameche was dead so he didn't think to actually reach out to him. And then someone on the crew (I think? Might have been his assistant or something, It's been awhile since I read the oral history) said, "Don Ameche? I see him walking on the Venice Boardwalk all the time." So Landis opened up the phonebook, found D. Ameche, called the number, and he picked up. Yada yada yada, after he got him in the movie, Landis asked him on set, "Don, I have to ask, why haven't you been acting?" And Ameche said, "Nobody called!"
You've already seen Coming To America but didn't see Trading Places first so you wouldn't have recognized Randolph and Mortimer Duke in a cameo as 2 homeless men that Eddie Murphy hands a wad of money to in a nod to their previous movie together! It's a great moment but only for those who saw Trading Places followed by Coming to America. Congratulations to David for recognizing Al Franken! Most reactors that I've seen don't catch that.
Yes!! That has way more context now lol.
I was a huge SNL fan growing up, and at that time I thought his Stuart Smalley character was so funny. So I was used to seeing the younger him. But he was REALLY young in this, so I wasn't positive at first. :)
Try watching Eddie Murphy movies in order. He has a tendency to throw a joke or two in referencing a previous movie.
Duke & Duke were in Coming to America. They were the homeless men Eddie gave the envelope of cash to.
"Randolf, Randolf!"
"Mortimer, we're back!"
Hahah yeah, that has WAY more meaning now!
Actually, Eddie Murphy's first movie 48 HOURS (1982) made him a superstar, in addition to him still being a cast member on SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE (from 1980 to mid 1984). Trading Places was Eddie's 2nd movie.
A big GenX hug to a couple of my favorite dudes! Excellent choice, and good to see YOU again, Mr. Marc.
Fun fact, since John Landis directed this AND the Blues Brothers, the fact that Louis' booking number in Trading Places is nearly identical to Jake's prison number in BB is no coincidence.
What's up!! Haha thank you! I screenshot this comment and sent it to Marc so he could see it at work lol.
Interesting about the prison number. Also the Belushi connection with Jim/John then, I presume?
The two old men famous for heckling the performers from the balcony seats in "The Muppet Show" were named Waldorf and Statler. They were named after two very posh hotels in New York City, the Waldorf Astoria and the Statler Hilton. Two of the best characters in the show, in my opinion!
Merry Christmas from St. John's, in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada! 🎄✨️🎅❤️⛄️🎶🥳
Since Frank Oz (the voice and co-creator of The Muppets) played the cop, I wouldn't be surprised if Waldorf and Statler were based partly on Randolph and Mortimer.
Thank you! They are hilarious. I didn't know their names though, and I love that they're based on those hotels. Merry Christmas back to you from Houston, TX!
i cant believe you guys recognized Esposito in the jail scene... i had to look 3 times after you said it... he is SO young there
Yeah, it was the expression on his face. But even then I thought, Nahhh. He DOES look young though, right?? These movies are so well remastered that sometimes I get into them and forget this was 40 years ago.
Wow. I am never this early!
Just sat down to take a break and start some festive day drinking. (Which is like my usual day drinking but in a special glass while wearing some tinsel.)
I love this movie. 🎉🍷
Hahahahahahhaha love it!!! That's hilarious.
FINALLY..............someone recognizes the dad from 90210.
I thought that was him! But I was reaching because it's been a while since I've seen that show.
Ralph Bellamy who plays Randolph Duke in this also played Dr. Sapirstein in Rosemary's Baby.
You’re right!! Sweet Lord we literally JUST WATCHED THAT. How could we have forgotten?? Off our game. Smh
"Looking good, ___"
"Feeling good, ____"
My high school & college besties and I still say this from this watching this back in the day.
I've heard that so many times over the years, but I had no idea that's what this was from!
1. The booking officer is Frank Oz. (various Muppets/Yoda)
2. Beeks/Paul Gleason also played Richard Vernon in "The Breakfast Club" and the idiot assistant police captain in "Die Hard". 😇
3. Landis didn't want Jamie Lee Curtis because she had always been a "scream queen" and he didn't know if she had the chops for comedy.
4. When everyone pauses in the restaurant it's a play on the old "EF Hutton" commercial. "When EF Hutton speaks everybody listens".
5. One of the most VHS pauses in history. Jamie Lee Curtis.😍🥰😋
6. GOOF: Where did Louis get the gun AND all those drugs for only $50?🤑Even in 1983.
7. Don Ameche's strong religious convictions made him uncomfortable with swearing. This proved to be a problem for the scene at the end of the movie, where he had to shout out "Fuck him!" to a group of Wall Street executives. When he did act out the scene, it had to be done in one take, because Ameche refused to do a second one. He also had an issue with the N word.
8. There's an Easter egg in "Coming to America" with the Duke brothers. Eddie Murphy at his best.
Oooooh you know my love of trivia!!!! This is awesome. Thank you so much for the details :)
4. I never forget the commercial where the girl is singing the ABCs and gets stuck on "EF", then everyone gets quiet and waits. That's the EF Hutton commercial I remember the most.
Kind of funny to have Michael Myers peeking through the plant over in the corner while another movie with Jamie Lee Curtis is playing. If Michael was actually in that room he'd be like,,,, DAMMIT!!! I ALMOST HAD HER!!! SHE WAS IN 2 OF MY MOVIES AND STILL GOT AWAY!!! DAMMIT!!! It would be even creepier if you had a life-sized cut out of Michael Myers back there peeking from behind the Christmas tree. That blueish-purple lighting in the room would look perfect with him in it back there.
You need to watch Coming to America next for the small easter egg. Merry Christmas, guys!
HELLO!!! :) Merry Christmas to you too. I've heard the Easter egg now, and I think it's brilliant. Makes way more sense after seeing this haha. I wonder how many unnoticed details like that are lurking in movies that I don't even realize (I know the Marvel movies alone have thousands lol)
In case you missed it, the Duke brothers made a cameo in Coming to America, remember Akeem giving those homeless guys Semi's pocket money? The homeless guys were Randolf and Mortimer Duke.
Thanks! Yeah, I didn't connect it until I started reading the comments, but that's GENIUS. Gives it so much more context now lol
May I just say how beautiful your tree looks. The tiny one on the table behind Marc as well. Your decor is so tastefully done. Not overwhelming. Just the right amount. 🎄👏
What a nice comment, thank you so much!! That little tree behind Marc is actually my favorite :) It's one of those ceramic trees with a light bulb inside. We had one when I was a kid, so it's a sentimental one for me. I hope you have a great Christmas holiday!
@@DavidvsFilm Thank you! I hope you both have a Happy Holiday season as well.
One of the best films of the 80s saw it in the cinema in 1983 everyone was in stitches watching it. So many funny moments too many to mention. A great film to watch at Christmas time. Cannot believe this is 40 years old this year.
It’s SHOCKING to me that this is 40 years old. Did you know going into it that it was going to be this good at the time, or was it a pleasant surprise?
❤ I’m so glad you enjoyed this movie! This along with “Coming to America” is my all time favorite Eddie Murphy piece. It used to air on TV over here quite often when I was a kid and our family would always watch… And even though I didn’t understand the business/trading side of things when I was a child it didn’t matter because it’s such a well written script that even without the stock market knowledge the story is clear and easy to follow. Love it!
Hear hear completely agree!! :) Yeah, I remember I was not allowed to see Coming to America when I was really little because it was rated R. But when I got older, I loved it! So this movie was a natural one for me to like.
RIP Denholm Elliott. An absolutely incredible actor and a wonderful human being who we lost to the AIDS epidemic❤
Yes! I couldn't place him at first, so I looked him up afterwards and realized it was Indiana Jones :) So then I started reading about him on Wikipedia and saw that :( So sad.
Merry Christmas amigos. Hope you have a fantastic holiday!!!🤗🎄🎉🌟💚
My bestie out Westie! Merry Christmas to you!!! Hope you guys are doing well :)
I know this came out a couple days ago but I saved it to watch on christmas. You're one of my favorite reactors. Hope you and your family have a wonderful holiday.
What an amazingly nice comment! Thank you so much, and Merry Christmas!
One of the best episodes in the 1st season of Our Flag Means Death makes use of the fact the servants see EVERYthing 😂
What a joy to watch people watch movies i grew up on. ❤
Merry Christmas!
Thank you so much! Great, great movie. Merry Christmas!
I just want you guys to know that I love the both of you and completely love watching movies with you. When I get a notification about you, it makes my day. I hope you both have a terrific Christmas. Thanks for being there and for making these videos. *big hug*
This just made my night! I’ll be sure to show Marc too. Thank you so much, and we wish the same back to you. ♥️
Hey guys big love and seasons greetings ❤❤❤
Big love back!! Happy Holidays to you too. I hope all is well in your neck of the woods :)
Happy Movie Thursday, David and Marc! And an early Merry Christmas to you both! 🎄
Great reaction! 😊
This is such a great movie! Easily one of my favorite Dan Aykroyd and Eddie Murphy films. They're such a great on-screen team up.
Two other great Christmas movies that I very highly recommend: "A Christmas Story"(1983) and "Scrooged"(1988).
Looking forward to the next reaction. 😊
Hey Randee!!! I think this is the first "Happy Movie THURSDAY" lol. Yeah, I have seen A Christmas Story about a thousand times, and it's just iconic with me. I am SURE Marc has seen it, but I will ask him. Neither of us has seen Scrooged, but I'd like to. When I was little, I almost watched it but the dead partner scared the crap out of me and my Mom had to turn it off. I was a wimp. lol
@DavidvsFilm OMG!!! David you have got to watch Scrooged ASAP w the amazing Bill Murrey & it's an absolute yearly Christmas tradition. I love it, but I'm a weirdo & horror nut so that movie is perfect for this time of year. We watch it and National Lampoons Christmas Vacation. I can't do the normal ones like Christmas story anymore. So burnt out on those & those 2 have now become our tradition. Plz watch it even if u can't for the channel. I really think u both will like it. Sending yall bunches of love for a very Merry Christmas or Happy Holiday if Christmas ain't ur thing. I never wanna offend so il just cover it all & say happy winter!!!lol 😂❤️❤️💞❤️❤️ edit: cause I can't spell for s... 😂 too much dang eggnog lol
Oh my!! One of my favorite movies ever 🤩 Thank you! Have a Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas!! This was sooo good. Such a fun movie to watch :)
Y’all’s commentary is hilarious😂😂😂
Haha thank you!! It's not always the best, but we always have the best time watching movies like this :)
EGG NOG? 🎄
Love your characterization of "Rasputin Santa" 🤣
Haha thank you!!
If you two haven’t seen Cocoon…it’s a good one with Ameche. Family drama/comedy.
I remember Cocoon, but I never saw it. But I've heard good things! Thanks for recommending it.
This has been a favourite since I saw it in the Theatre. I rewatch at least once a year.
Did you guys know that the skinny White dude who plays the jailer is Frank Oz, who provided the voices for Yoda and Oscar the Grouch?
Had NO idea!!! I mean I saw his name in the opening credits so I knew he was in it, but I've only seen him older. I was shocked later lol
If you've seen "Coming to America", you've seen the Duke Brothers make cameo appearances as a couple of homeless men.
And the old men in the theater box in The Muppet Show- Statler and Waldorf. :)
Ralph Bellamy had a lead role in "The Court Martial of Billy Mitchell".
No other reactors have ever been able to recognize Al Franken.😊
haha I barely did! Even without seeing the movie, I knew about some of the people in it, but I had no idea he was!
From the U.S. Department of Justice:
"What is PCP? PCP (phencyclidine) was developed in the 1950s as an intravenous anesthetic, but its use for humans was discontinued because it caused patients to become agitated, delusional, and irrational. Today individuals abuse PCP because of the mind-altering, hallucinogenic effects it produces."
That's putting it mildly. It's horrible stuff. I haven't partaken, myself. You only have to see a documentary about it to be horrified into avoiding it.
Thanks for the info! And I'll tell you, you roped me in at the end there with, "You only have to see a documentary about it.." I love documentaries. :)
Did you guys forget that Randolph & Mortimer were also in Coming to America with Eddie Murphy? Remember they were homeless and sleeping on the ground and Prince Akeem gave them the money to get them back on their feet.
We do now :) We didn't catch the context before, but that's a brilliant cameo.
The Dukes cameo in C2A as homeless men🎩
Merry Christmas to you both 🎄🎅
Thank you!! Back to you :) Merry Christmas!!
I've watched this movie dozens of times, but it somehow wasn't until last year that I realized that the actress who played Penelope wasn't Anette O'Toole. Blew my mind. Had always thought that was her all my life.
It really does look like her, right??
This movie came BEFORE Coming to America, in CtA Akeem gives the Dukes money when they live on the street (if you remember), and it's by design.
11:33 This is Yoda (Frank Oz)!
PCP, you have.
The intake officer booking Dan Aykroyd’s character is Frank Oz.
Ok so I saw his name in the credits, but I didn't recognize him while watching the movie. Afterwards I was like, "Hey, where was Yoda??" because I'm just so used to seeing him as he looks now. I wouldn't have recognized him in a thousand years!
@@DavidvsFilm And Miss Piggy, Fozzy Bear, Cookie Monster, Bert and Grover.
@@karingiles1546 I knew Miss Piggy but not the others! Wow. I bet he’s in high demand for phone calls to friends’ kids lol.
John Landis is one of my all time favorite movie directors, especially love ''The Blues Brothers'' (which I saw with my older sister in the cinema at the time it was released), ''An American Werewolf in London'' (in my top 10 of favorites movies of all time), ''Trading Places'', ''Into the Night'', ''Spies Like Us'', ''¡Three Amigos!'' (probably my all time favorite comedy!), ''Coming to America'' and ''Innocent Blood''. Btw, Dan Aykroyd dressed as Santa, is with no doubt the greatest Santa Clause in movie history! Hahahaha
Don't forget "Thriller".
He did Three Amigos?? AND Thriller?? Wow! Thriller is of course iconic, but I love Three Amigos. "Sew, sew like the wind.."
@@Serai3 almost wanted to mention it, but then again, it's a 15 minute long music video. In the 1980s, my father even had the video tape (Dutch release), with the video, 45 minute making of and a bonus video of The Jacksons ''Can You Feel it''
@@DavidvsFilm ''It's a sweater!''
@@peterengelen2794 It's still one of, if not the most famous film he ever made.
At the 14:35 mark, the "beautiful building" you mention is Philadelphia City Hall -- Built using brick, white marble and limestone, it is the world's largest free-standing masonry building and was the world's tallest habitable building upon its completion in 1894.
This is Eddie Murphy's 2nd movie, & an even bigger hit than his first -- 48 Hours, co-starring Nick Nolte.
You also mentioned Coming To America. My advice to you -- watch Trading Places again, then watch Coming To America so you can get the joke you didn't know you missed the first time. 🤣🤣🤣
Thank you so much!! It's a beautiful building. I'll make sure Marc sees this. I fogot about 48 Hours! I want to watch that and also Beverly Hills Cop- I've heard those movies are especially good.
@@DavidvsFilm Beverly Hills Cop 1 & 2 might be Eddie Murphy's best rolls!! Don't miss 'em!!!
LOVE this movie!
What's up??? Hope you are doing well :) Yeah, this was so much fun. I literally didn't get bored during any of it, which is always the hallmark of an excellent film for me lol
Happy for this movie. I looove it but where's GOT lol. Jk. Merry Christmas ya filthy animals
Hahaha I have to say that I am definitely looking forward to watching Season 5 with Marc. If memory serves, we should be watching it next weekend and then posting it the following week :)
Oh and Merry Christmas to YOU, ya filthy animal.
Actually, minimum wage was in the $2 range. The guy who plays Clarence Beeks is not altogether bad in Van Wilder. A great movie with Ryan Reynolds and Kal Penn.
Thank you so much!! :)
I watch a lot of pre-code (1929-1934) movies, and Ralph Bellamy is in a whole bunch of them. And let me tell you something - bro used to be smoking hot!
I love this movie! Classic Eddie comedy! I just wish they hadn’t done black-face.
If you've seen "Coming To America" Randolph and Mortimer feature as homeless men
That carpet in the bathroom was so awful on so many levels.
I still get flashbacks of that smell when I drink tequilla.
Hahahaha for REAL. I didn't keep harping on it, but I noticed carpet just everywhere. At the end on the trading floor, anything that isn't moving is covered in carpet lol
@@DavidvsFilm 🤣🤣🤣
Muppet brothers! Love it!
😁😁😉
Did you get the connection between this film and Coming To America? The Dukes are in both movies.
We didn't, but we do now!
I agree...they are totally the two gumpry old cinics from the Muppets!!!😂
hahahaha
"Rich people love betting one dollar". Really? You've seen this happen besides this movie? I need sources lol. Happy holidays, great reaction!
Haha thanks! Happy Holidays to you :) Well, technically I guess I should have specified transactional rather than just betting, but what I was thinking of was a tour guide in Massachusetts once told us Rose Kennedy sold her house to Edward Kennedy for $1. And then in movies/shows I sometimes see lawyers taking $1 in the moment as a retainer to establish attorney/client privilege. That’s all I needed to make my broad generalization from there lol.
I know it's probably late in the month, but I hope you guys watch the 2019 movie "Klaus". It's an animated movie and it's sooooooooooooooooo good. You'll love it!! Great reaction...Merry Christmas!!
Thank you so much for reminding me about this movie! I heard good things about it last year also when we watched Rise of the Guardians. I can tell you we probably won't have time for it this year, but I'll definitely keep in mind for next year. Thanks again for recommending it :)
I take it back. “Fellow Travelers” absolutely tore my heart out and stomped on it. Just finished it and I am a shred of the human being I was at the beginning. :-/. Be warned.

Ahhhh a last look at the chaos of the trading floor, it's all gone now, more a dinosaur than Morty or Randy.
